We take a look back at the two UEFA Champions League matches involving English sides on Tuesday evening, with the focus on the Fantasy assets of both Manchester clubs.

Manchester City produced a slick away performance in Ukraine as they saw off Shakhtar Donetsk, but their cross-city rivals once again flattered to deceive as they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Juventus.

We’ve all the relevant goals, assists, injury news, Fantasy talking points and managers quotes from last night’s European fixtures.

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 Manchester City

  • Goals: David Silva (£8.5m), Aymeric Laporte (£5.8m), Bernardo Silva (£7.6m)
  • Assists: Gabriel Jesus (£10.2m), Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m)

Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) remained an unused substitute as Manchester City cantered to victory in Ukraine last night.

The 51.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Aguero would also perhaps have been heartened by the performance of Gabriel Jesus (£10.2m) in attack, who linked up admirably well with the team-mates around him but who once again failed to convince when presented with a goal-scoring opportunity – only one of the Brazilian’s six shots forced home goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov into a save.

One of Jesus’ blocked efforts inadvertently turned into an assist for David Silva (£8.5m) to open the scoring on 30 minutes and the little Spaniard was once again instrumental in City’s attacks, delivering another midfield masterclass after his equally impressive display against Burnley in Gameweek 9.

Pep Guardiola was full of praise for his player after the match:

At Hoffenheim, he was the best player on the pitch, and his performances in the last month have been incredible.

He scored the last goal then, and the first one now. He does everything perfect. Another incredible performance from David.

Silva’s volleyed strike came just minutes after he had struck the Shakhtar post from a Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) cross and only Jesus had more shots than the long-serving midfielder last night – another of which clipped the bar early on. No player could match Silva’s tally of five key passes, meanwhile, and on this form the former Spanish international represents tremendous value at £8.5m in FPL.

One of the negatives to Silva’s appeal as an FPL asset is the competition he faces in central midfield, with the fit-again Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) adding to Guardiola’s options after getting 69 minutes under his belt alongside Silva and Fernandinho (£5.4m) in the City manager’s fluid 4-3-3 formation.

De Bruyne was understandably not quite at his best but his performance was full of the usual lung-busting runs and defence-splitting passes, the Belgian also back on set-piece duties and collecting an assist for Aymeric Laporte‘s (£5.8m) headed goal to put City 2-0 up.

Guardiola commented on De Bruyne’s performance after full-time:

He played good. In the second half he tired, we controlled the game. They played better in the second half, we had problems and he had to run more.

He was two months out injured but the way he played and his quality was good. Now he’ll be better for the next game. His physical condition will improve.

With six days to recover before City play Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 10, De Bruyne could feasibly start again at Wembley on Monday evening but it may be that Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) – the fall guy in the engine room last night – comes back into the starting XI for that encounter with Mauricio Pochettino’s troops.

Bernardo scored within a minute of taking to the field as a replacement for De Bruyne, latching onto to Mahrez’s pass to rifle past Pyatov for City’s third goal.

Mahrez was once again selected on the right flank and produced some excellent touches and passes as City mounted wave after wave of attack, though his occasional wasteful finishing was once again in evidence as he spurned two excellent opportunities before Silva broke the deadlock.

Having been rested for the victory over Sean Dyche’s side, Raheem Sterling (£11.2m) was back in the starting XI at the expense of Leroy Sane (£9.2m) on the left wing.

The England winger was perhaps the pick of City’s front three, causing panic amongst the home defence with his dribbles and striking the bar in stoppage time. Sterling also provided the “big chance” that Mahrez dragged wide on 22 minutes.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) also carved out an excellent opportunity for Mahrez and forced Pyatov into a save from distance, though his energetic display down the left flank was somewhat tempered by his occasionally wayward crossing.

John Stones (£5.3m) filled in admirably at right-back again, with him and the excellent Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m) helping City to yet another clean sheet. Ederson (£5.7m), indeed, had precious little to do all evening.

Kyle Walker (£6.6m) was given a ten-minute run-out on his return from a groin injury, meanwhile.

Guardiola was full of praise for his side after the match:

Incredible. Our first half was the best we have played in the last three seasons since I’ve been here. We were outstanding, we created a lot of chances.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Stones (Walker 80′), Otamendi, Laporte, Mendy; Fernandinho, De Bruyne (Bernardo Silva 69′), David Silva; Mahrez, Jesus (Foden 87′), Sterling.

Manchester United 0-1 Juventus

Romelu Lukaku (£10.9m), without a goal in FPL since Gameweek 5 and on an eight-match drought in all competitions, was backed by his manager to return to form after Manchester United’s meek surrender to Juventus but Jose Mourinho acknowledged that the Belgian striker is struggling at the moment.

Speaking to the media, Mourinho said:

No criticism at all. But I have to agree his moment is not sweet.

A complete understanding that the player is a fantastic professional that wants to give everything.

Not just with the goals he is not scoring but also in his confidence, in his movement, his touch. He is not linking the game well with the team.

But he is our striker and he a is a good striker we believe in. Could I play Rashford there? But then I don’t have a winger as in this moment we have a difficult situation.

Romelu is a hard-working guy and a good professional. One day the goals will arrive and the confidence will be back.

Lukaku had only one shot last night, with even that effort being blocked before it could trouble Wojciech Szczesny in the Juventus goal.

Lukaku’s control and passing accuracy were awry yesterday evening and he had fewer touches than any starting outfield player at Old Trafford, but he wasn’t helped by the three midfielders supporting him in attack: only Anthony Martial (£7.3m) dirtied Szczesny’s gloves as Juan Mata (£6.2m) and Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) toiled in Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1.

Paul Pogba (£8.0m) represented what little goal threat United could muster, striking the post with the hosts’ only real opportunity of the game.

That David de Gea (£5.8m) and Victor Lindelof (£4.8m) were the Red Devils’ best players said much about how much an admittedly imperious Juventus side dominated, with de Gea making a handful of stops to keep his side in the game and Lindelof producing perhaps his best display of 2018/19.

Mourinho praised the Swedish defender and Chris Smalling (£5.8m) after the match, also bemoaning the lack of quality in his squad:

It’s not also easy because many of the players they belong to these top teams.

So we work with what we have, try to improve what we have. Today, I have to say Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof had a very positive game. I think it’s the first time Lindelof played a game of this dimension.

We work, we work hard, try to improve our players but quality is quality. Quality in football is everywhere. When I say quality I don’t just say creative players, Chiellini and Bonucci, it is absolutely beautiful to see.

That United have kept only one clean sheet in the league all season (none at home) deters investment in their defence, of course, and should be of encouragement for owners of Everton’s attacking assets ahead of the Toffees’ trip to Old Trafford in Gameweek 10.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Ashley Young (£5.7m) were once again preferred at full-back with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) – who has had mouth surgery – and Diogo Dalot (£5.3m) unavailable to their manager.

Marcos Rojo (£4.9m), Phil Jones (£5.2m), Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m), Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) and Scott McTominay (£4.3m) also missed out, with rumours circulating that an aggravated groin injury was the reason for Alexis Sanchez’s (£10.0m) absence.

Mourinho bemoaned Fellaini’s unavailability after full-time, highlighting the important role that the towering Belgian international plays in not only protecting the back four but in his aerial prowess up top:

I really missed Fellaini because when we are dominant, we are playing in the opponents’ half and the opponent closes the way they did, and they brought [Andrea] Barzagli as a third centre-back, Fellaini is a player that gives us different things.

The United boss also explained why he didn’t make a single substitute last night:

Bear in mind Sanchez was in the stand. Lingard was in the stand. Fellaini may have been in the stand or at home as I didn’t see him.

The only real attacking option was a young 18-year-old lad [Chong] who has never played in the first team before. Given the dynamic of the game, I didn’t feel it was appropriate to bring him on.

You can’t expect a kid making his debut in a game like this to give you something like scoring a goal. So that’s why I didn’t make any changes on the pitch.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): de Gea; Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw; Pogba, Matic; Rashford, Mata, Martial; Lukaku.

Sterling out? I just bought him last week, but after a no-show and playing full minutes at CL not sure at all he’ll play on the weekend.

Keep - he'll play most of the time and he's their best FPL attacking option along with Aguero. Last season at around this point a lot of people were going Sane over Sterling for supposedly more nailed-onness and Sterling went on to start every single Premier League match for a good few weeks.

Having said all that - I'm selling him for Mane 😛

It's going to look completely knee-jerky having only got Sterling last week, but even before the match vs. Burnley I thought of him as a one-week punt before I bring Mane back in to captain vs. Cardiff.

Roughly 1/4 of the way into the season, how happy are you with your start? Have your goals changed since the beginning? What is your aim now, either in terms of OR, mini-leagues or anything else?

More than happy so far. My goal is to do better than last year to show it wasn't a fluke and I am doing much better than I was at this stage last year.

Very happy - rough goal was top 100k by around Christmas in order to push towards top 1k at the end of the season.

16k currently so have to be happy with that, despite some unlucky moves recently I've been treading water so can't complain.

Very well. Much better than I had imagined, currently at 6K.

The goal was to get inside the top 10K as in two years of playing I have finished 10.5K and 37K. On my way there, by well aware I dropped from 90K to 500K at Christmas last season!

Very happy. Currently sitting at around 42k so a much better start than last year. I'm being more patient with transfers.

Goal as always is top 10k.

Roughly 30 points ahead of last year but my OR is down by about 50k, so I guess everyone else is also scoring higher. Finished in the top 20k for the first time last year and would like to kick on a bit, but my mini-league is my biggest priority. In that regard, its much tighter this year with about half a dozen of us in close contention. Last year I hit first place in week 5 and never lost it.
Happy with the first few weeks, but 4 of my last 5 have been game week ranks of 2 million up. Wildcard worked generally well and fixed some issues but would have ideally saved it a few weeks longer. Still, 3/4 of the season to go.

A combination of daft decision-making and not paying attention has resulted in a wildcard this week ranked outside the top million.

        Going v well (#620)

My goals at the start were to plan and think through the full effects of each move very carefully, and to think of them as ripples that spread out through my current and prospective team. I knew this would require more patience than I have ever previously shown and it is being fully tested this week with every fearful, impatient, short-termist bone in my body saying take a - 4 and get Salah in. But the effects are so knocked on and widespread that I must stick to my guns and do what I think will result in more points come the end of the season.

        It's hard, man

I don't put the permanent link in because i think contributions should be assessed on their own merit and not the rank. My previous seasons for example have all be fairly average as I've always just caned loads of free hits for a laugh and sometimes just given up before the end of the season. But my conributions even then were valid, I just couldn't take my own advice.

            https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/2704729/event/9

Current team. I am really conflicted. Salah is extremely damaging to the team, but I know it could be a bit of a temporary rank killer this week

I think consistently being on contributing to good discussion carries more weight than current and previous ranks. A rank doesn’t always tell the full story.

Currently sitting at around15k which is good for me at this stage of the season. Not finished outside the top 50k before but that really feels very average compared to the calibre of managers around me so I'm hoping for a top 10k finish this year. Changed my approach slightly, being more patient with my team, no hits yet, avoiding knee jerk moves on a Saturday night and not monitoring price changes much for first time ever, a more relaxed approach I guess. As for my ML, leader is in top 1k so some healthy competition.

        berry appy with the start.

Goal was to make 10k this season.
Know its a game of ups and downs, but I'm currently at 6k so will prob aim a bit higher. Found myself at a similar rank about 20gwks in last season, but basically spent the last 18wks jumping up and down a couple of thousand places each week. Hopefully I've learn from it.

Dont want to set the bar to high, but getting a 3-digit rank for the first time would be sweet.

Absolutely thrilled with my Start! My highest ever rank as I'm just inside the top 10k! Aim is to stay there and win as many minileague as possible! Wildcard still intact so as long as I don't mess this up this should be my best ever season.

Highest I've ever been at this point. Gw1 started with 16k and been fluttering in and around top 10k since. Usually nearer a million at this stage underwhelming score on wildcard last week but optimistic going forward.

        Currently 18k and very happy.

Since taking this seriously I have been very hit and miss; with one top 3k finish but generally thereafter finishing 100k -150k after terrible starts.

Goal this season was to get top 50k just to enhance my average score. A score in that region will take care of the mini leagues.

Original goal: learn what drives returns in FPL (I'm new). Focus on OR but most important was to develop strategy for future seasons and continually improve.

Goal after GW1: too many drinks on deadline day led to a horrible overhaul of my carefully constructed team. Forget about rank entirely, take happy pills (not really) and focus on strategy.

Current goal: top 50k is probably fine this season. Currently sitting at about 150k.

I am happy with my season start. Generally I finish with an OR of around 28k. My goal this year is to break the 10k – only 6 points behind currently. I’m currently sitting around 15k after three red arrows (88k same time last season). Hence I’m on track but a long way to go. No hits and patience is the key for me.

WC is the only chip I have used (GW9).

In 2015/2016 i had a extremely bad season, ended up at around 300k.
I was planning on taking a break in 2016/2017 but decided to go all inn instead. Ended up 269th overall, were invited to podcasts and suddently became an "expert" in the eyes of some even though i only played a couple of years. Personally i believe you have to have atleast 2-3 years of good results to be called an expert. I'm nowhere close.

With that said, this year is all about not fluking out and ending up on a solid finish. I'd be happy with Top 10k but i'm aiming for Top 1k. Many friends believe my last season was a "one season wonder" and i'l end up with a mediocre ranking again. I'm gonna prove them wrong and at the same time prove to myself that i can play this game.

Started this year very bad around 350k for the first 5 gameweeks. GW9 was a big boost for me with 51 points and a swing from 100k to 60k. It's looking brighter but my minileagues are very competitive. It's gonna be an interesting season and i'm looking forward to it.

happy with my start..currently in 25k region, my aim since the start of the season is still the same..to achieve my first top 10k finish...miss out last season after a great start last season and by GW 19 i was in the 1k region...

~45k which is fine for this stage of the season. Still haunted by two 50/50 decisions i made though; one to get rid of Fraser on my WC because Howe said he was injured just before his 18 pointer, the other to play Shaw over Doherty a couple of weeks ago for his 15 pointer. I'd be comfortably inside the top 10k if i'd called those correctly.

Pretty happy, I'm at a 50 point deficit in the ole cash league so nothing to serious yet, sitting at around the 250k overall which I still think is very good in the grand scheme of things.

Badly. After a good season last year was always going to be hard to keep up. Goal as always is OR 1K and if that seems unachievable at some point the goal would change to OR 10K. I'm doing alrite on that front with a current OR of 20K but I dont remember a season when I was SOOOO confused and constantly questioning my decisions.

How many of the big defenders should I have?
Is Kane worth it? Is Kun worth it? What about Salah? Were wolves and Mitrovic just blips and would regress back to what you would expect of traditional low/mid priced assets?

With no answers, my season is going pretty badly.

In his current form he is just not doing the business for that price. Do you already have Kun?

Good question, that's why most will keep.

The other two fixtures of that five are Brighton and Cardiff at home. Why sell when he is playing up front?

Less hassle just to keep (has lovely home fixtures in between those) and could still score in others (at least against Utd anyway).

Probs yeah. Thinking about a GW15 WC so would get Rich in and sell in 17.

Planned transfers after a WC seems a bit too much.

I dunno, I think 1 planned transfer after 2 weeks is fine. Ideally save in 16 and then have max flexibility for 17.

I'm probably dropping him this week, dont know which way to go though, can get someone like Maddison or add Robertson in defense

wont get him back until there is improvement instats, will try Sigurdsson till then...

I'm considering it - he hasn't offered as much threat when playing up front and looked a bit lost in his most recent game

Wonder if Moreno gets a start tonight. Robbo played a lot for Scotland over the break and would be wise to let him have the night off.

What are your opinions on Lucas Digne after the Man Utd game? Everton look better defensively and have Brighton and Cardiff the next two home games.

Everton have some really tough away games coming though.
So make sure you can rotate him if you are tempted.

What option is better (2 ft)?

      1) Kane, Stephens-> mane, Arnie
      2) Kane, richa->Salah, Wilson

Key ML competitors have mane, but if Salah explodes, it'll give a huge boost.
      The team is:

      Foster (Patricio)
      Robbo mendy Alonso (Peltier awb)
      Hazard richa maddison fraser (stephens)
      Kane Aguero mitro

Button likely to actually play in January (Ryan should be away if you are planning that far ahead) and if Ryan out comes into a team with ok defence and fixtures. If Hamer were to get a start, it would be for a team in bottom three with one of worst defensive records.

Ryan leaving in Jan could bring Button into play (don't know who the definite no.2 is)

2 FT available. With Liverpool having the fixture to explode in GW10. Is Kane to Salah sensible? (already have Mane if fit).

      A) Kane, Richarlison/Maddison > Salah, Ings
      B) Kane, Fraser > Arnie, Hazard
      C) Kane, Richarlison/Maddison > Arnie, Hazard
      D) Other options

Considering this team for a -4.

      Patricio
      Luiz - Robbo - Mendy
      Mane - Hazard - Salah - Maddison
      Aguero - Wilson - Ings

      Martinez - Kayal - Bennett - AWB

Looks good or too weak bench?
Transfers: Alonso, Knockaert, Richa > Luiz, Salah, Kayal.

      *Foster becomes Fab after GW10
Still not sure Kenedy or Murphy?
Richa alternatives around his price anyone?

      Foster*
      Mendy Robbo Duffy Alonso
      Salah Maddy Richa Hazard
      Arnie Aguero

      Subs: Button, WanB, Kenedy, Success
