How premium options compare with best-ever FPL scores: Harry Kane

In this short series over the international break, we will be comparing some of the top premium options against their best-ever FPL campaigns.

With big fixture swings approaching in Gameweeks 15 and 16, Fantasy managers will have to make sure they are in possession of the right expensive options.

As Tottenham Hotspur are one of the teams with an appealing schedule on the horizon, we have started this series with their star striker Harry Kane (£12.4m).

Kane’s best-ever FPL season was recorded in the 2016/17 campaign when he scored 29 goals and assisted seven others.

Those figures combined for a total score of 224 points, 33 of which were registered through bonus.

The England captain gave a valiant effort in trying to follow up that career high-score in 2017/18. His 217 points last year were just seven short of the previous campaign.

So far in 2018/19, Kane has amassed 61 points at an average of 5.08 per game. If he continues at his current rate he should record a total score of 193 points, which would be the fourth-best of his FPL career.

GW 15 midweek game can see Aguero getting rested ahead of the weekend gam at Stamford Bridge. May be worth considering the switch to Kane then.

If he wants to rest him it will be in a Home game eg. Bournemouth.

Watford away is not an easy game.

I think there's too much emphasis on getting Kane/Spurs in given how they're playing in comparison with City players. Between now and the end of January City have 12 fixtures and two of those are tough (LIV home, CHE away). City have kept clean sheets in three of four fixtures against the 'big 6' teams and on their day can beat any team pretty comfortably. Spurs look lacklustre and Eriksen can clearly not play two games in a week. Without him they don't look the same team and as a result with Kane having to play deeper I'm not convinced he's worth 12.5, even with the fixture run.

Somewhat agree with this. Lets wait and see whether Eriksen and Alli get back to full fitness. Spurs don't currently look on the verge of exploding, but I still feel he's the safest captaincy option over Xmas.

Is David Silva viable? KDB out means he’s playing in a further forward role and I’d say he was one of the more nailed on players.
I’m looking to do these transfers between now and gw16/17
    Holebas > Laporte
    Bennett > alderweireld
    Salah > David Silva
    Murray > Kane
    Ings > kamara
    With 0.1 ITB.
    My team would then be
    Fabianski
    Alderweireld robbo Alonso Laporte
    Mane hazard richarlison David Silva
    Kane arnautovic
Bench wan bissaka diagana and kamara.
Apologies for the long post but thoughts??

General thoughts are Kane can be downgraded to Aguero or auba if either of them start going mad but spurs’ run just looks too good to ignore. Also Ben Davies is cheaper than alderweireld but is he as nailed on?

Davies will get rotated more but imagine he'd potentially still score more points. Looks decent, I'd maybe be tempted to swap Silva for Alli and keep Aguero though, assuming he's fit by then.

Davies is nailed at the moment (and rested during international break) as Rose is still indefinitely injured. Neither is playing well though.

Couple of transfers to make, plenty of time to go yet but what would you go with:

    A)
    Ryan (Hamer)
    Alonso Mendy Robertson Doherty Digne
    Salah Hazard Richarlison Diangana Kennedy
    Wilson Arnie Aguero

    B)
    Ryan (Hamer)
    Alonso Robertson Doherty/Digne Bennett AWB
    Salah Hazard Richarlison Martial Diangana
    Wilson Arnie Aguero

If B would you go with Doherty or Digne?

    Thanks!

I'm in a similar position myself, and was thinking exactly the same transfers, so I'd go with B.

Digne personally, as you have Bennett for cover.

I'll be looking at double City attack, a Spurs defender - probably Trippier - and some West Ham coverage - look at those fixtures! I'm really tempted to bring Kane in too, haven't owned him all season but he's a massive differential in the in the top 10k. Arsenal also have some nice home games but it's going to be hard fitting everyone in

we will need spurs players with those great fixtures, but which one ?
trippier seems best value but is he worth having with some rotations in busy period ? he has started each game since gw 2, after a rest from WC.
kane is expensive but more nailed than kun when christmas fixtures come and will play 90 minutes
lloris seems fine but prefer fabianski

Spurs defence is going to be tough to predict. Monitor Rose's injury, as Davies may end up being the most nailed. Trippier has been shocking defensively, so Aurier may get a few starts.

I wouldn't touch any of our midfielders at the moment.

I'm likely to go for Kane, but somewhat reluctantly, as we haven't looked like blowing anyone away yet.

Rose will not be out for more than a month

I've got to say that whilst I love this site and the guys do great work, this article is quite poor in terms of the use of stats (sorry David). None of these stats quoted as changed are significantly different at all.

Touches per game 37.2 vs 38.2
    Final Third 21.2 vs 20
Mins per Pass Received 3.7 vs 3.8
Successful Passes Opp Half 73% vs 75%
    Final Third 76% vs 73%
    Big Chances 0.9 vs 0.8

Infact if you look at last season vs this season the stats summary comes out 51% vs 49% - barely any different. Whilst I agree Kane is dropping deeper and at the moment doesn't look quite as good a prospect, I think the main concern is that despite having a similar number of shots etc, his expected goals is much lower than last season. This suggests that Spurs haven't created the same overall quality of chances for him yet this season. Missing Eriksen and Alli is probably quite key to that, and I'd expect his points to revert back to normal when they return fully fit.

I don't want to be overly critical, but I look at this sort of stats every day - I'm an analyst, dont ask who for 🙂 and this is a bit misleading.

I think so! Don't think I can afford to ignore that run of fixtures and his potential to play most games. Only question is whether it would be for Aguero, or a big upgrade involving ditching Salah/Hazard.

I'm ditching Aguero for Kane in GW15. Over the Christmas period Aguero will be rotated, and that GW15 midweek fixture against Watford looks very likely that Jesus will replace him. I think it's the best decision.

The chances created is an interesting one, although not the main source of his points. Mins per goal though is a product of the quality of chances he has had - if his expected goals is lower, you would expect him to score less goals. I think its more down to Spurs creating chances as a team than Kane himself. When Spurs have their squad back fit and good fixtures, you will want him in your team!

          1. MTPockets
              5 years, 4 months ago

Probably right on the team rather than just Kane. On chances created - I haven't checked the stats but think Aguero's a good example of someone who seems to have progressed under Pep from an outright striker getting goals, to chance creator + goal getter. So a changed role for Kane doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing - comes back to team form and game. Perhaps injury recoveries and fixtures will catalyse that as you say - not sure yet whether that will be old Kane or changed Kane.

None of the people who write about stats have a clue about statistics. Statistical significance is an unknown concept it seems.

good shout with trippier, so far my plan was to get one of mendy/laporte/stones as a replacement in case of serious injury.

mane to sterling is certainly possible, but pool attack is also scary don't you think?

Not really convinced with pool attack. They score 1 or 2 in most games. City score 4+ in most.

          Captain choices:

GW13 between Salah and Augero maybe martial if you have him
GW14 hazard edges it ahead of augero/sterling with salah just behind
GW15 Kane/arnie followed by salah and then hazard then augero
          GW16 auba/laca/martial/arnie followed by Kane/salah
          GW17 Kane followed by hazard/augero/sterling/arnie then auba/laca
          GW18 aubu/laca/hazard/augero/sterling followed by Arnie/martial
          GW19 Kane/martial/salah followed by hazard/augero/arnie
          Gw20 Kane followed by hazard/arnie

Basically salah only features once in top considerations after GW15 and Kane features numerous times providing he picks up form more so than either arsenal options

I agree with all of this but got burned badly by Kane captaincy in easy games last year - not sure we can so readily disregard form for fixtures.

I'd fairly happily default to Aguero/Salah captain in any non top 4 game.
But think Kane's major appeal will be nailedness when fixtures get very congested. Not sure that's worth 12.4m yet though

Captaincy choices (C/VC) for me (Kane, Aguero, Salah, Hazard and Arnautovic rotation):
              GW13: Salah/Aguero
              GW14: Hazard/Salah
              GW15: Salah/Kane
              GW16: Salah/Arnautovic
              GW17: Kane/Salah
              GW18: Hazard/Aguero
              GW19: Salah/Kane
              GW20: Salah/Hazard
              GW21: Hazard/Salah

Just listened to some really poor analysis on the scoutcast re: Man City's skewed away form.
Looking at the fixtures they've played two more at home (Huddersfield, Newcastle, Fulham, Brighton, Burnley, Southampton, Man Utd) and the away matches were tougher (Arsenal, Wolves, Liverpool, Tottenham) except for Cardiff where they scored 5.
            I mean wtf?

Worth mentioning though that we do point out that Man City's fixtures have been tougher.

That's the beauty of stats - lots of ways of looking at it.

Has Aguero's failure to find the net so often against a variety of teams away from home (last season and this) an indicator that he's better at home, happenstance, or all fixtures away are tough.

All we are doing is present some stats, point people to the direction of the Members area to find there own and spark debate.

So its great that you have an opinion on this. More debate about stats is a good thing for us!

Really worth getting Membership to help develop your own analysis as well.

He scored 5 away to Cardiff.
There's a clue there that it might be fixture difficulty.

Whether Man City and in patic Aguero can as well away as they do at the Etihad is crucial for so many decisions.

I currently have the armband on Aguero v West Ham btw.

                    I plan
                    Fabianski
                    Alonso Mendy Robertson Doherty
                    Salah Richarlison D.Silva F.Anderson
                    Aguero Lacazette

Started watching the Scoutcast Extra this morning but couldn't get through it. Stats don't provide anything beneficial without context, in fact they can do more harm than good when spouted about like that. Stopped watching when Jonty said City are reliant on their home form because they're only 7th in terms of shots away from home. First of all they've only played 5 away games so far, less than a lot of the other teams in the league. Secondly, 3 of those 5 games were against Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham. Obviously their numbers aren't going to look great when you factor that in but context is key. He went on to praise Spurs for having lots of shots away from home. They've played 8 away games, 3 more than City, with only one of them being against a top 6 team. These days I'm spending more time trying to spot and ignore bad advise from the FFS team than actually getting using information from them.

TL;DR - do your own research.
