Watchlist Update – Wolves and Everton provide budget defensive options

We are continuing to go through each of the options currently on our Watchlist.

The players that can be found in the widget on our side-bar are options that we believe Fantasy Premier League managers should be monitoring for a place in their own squads.

After looking at goalkeepers earlier this week, we now move onto defenders.

Andrew Robertson (£6.4m) keeps his place at the top of the Watchlist after securing a second double-figure haul of the campaign in Gameweek 12. The Liverpool left-back has offered a spread of points so far in 2018/19 with high clean sheet potential, creativity and propensity for bonus points.

Marcos Alonso (£7.1m) is the only defender to have recorded more FPL points this season than Robertson but stays second on account of Chelsea’s fixtures. While Liverpool face Watford, Everton, Burnley and Bournemouth in the next four matches, Chelsea travel to Spurs and host Manchester City in that time, with Fulham and Wolves in between. Despite that tricky run, Alonso remains another reliable option this season, also with multiple points-scoring avenues on offer. In the first 12 matches of 2018/19, it’s one goal, seven assists and six clean sheets.

Wolves’ fixture swing has pulled Matt Doherty (£4.9m) into third place on the defenders’ Watchlist. Matches against Huddersfield (home), Cardiff (away), Chelsea (home) and Newcastle (away) are too good to ignore. We know that Doherty is another defender with plenty on offer, his advanced positioning as the wing-back in Wolves’ 3-4-3 system underpinning his assist and goal potential. However, his 16.5% ownership will have to pay close attention to the news between now and the Gameweek 13 deadline as he is considered a doubt as a result of the facial injury picked up against Arsenal.

The recent news about Benjamin Mendy’s knee surgery has pushed him off the Watchlist, to be replaced by team-mate Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m). The centre-back was the option we put on in place of Mendy when he was absent for a weeks earlier this season. As the only outfield player to have been involved in every single minute of Manchester City’s Premier League campaign thus far, he warrants some investment. The Frenchman has collected seven sheets in 2018/19, more than any other City defender mainly on account of how often he has played. There’s a lot to be said for having a City option that seems immune to Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy.

Shane Duffy (£4.6m) holds off competition from team-mate Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) to be the primary Brighton defender for the Watchlist. While the latter has two goals in his last two matches, there still seems to be more potential from Duffy. Indeed both players have had two shots on goal in the last four Gameweeks, with both on target for Dunk and no accurate ones for Duffy. However, the Irishman has touched the ball in opposition penalty boxes seven times to Dunk’s four in that time. That suggests his goal threat is more clear long-term. Obviously clean sheet potential plays a big part too, with Brighton top of the defensive Season Ticker for the next four Gameweeks still.

Lucas Digne (£4.8m) looks the best Everton defensive asset for their upcoming promising run of matches. They host Cardiff in Gameweek 13 and Newcastle and Watford in the two matches after their Gameweek 14 trip to Anfield. His price is a key factor as it means he is easier to bench for the Merseyside derby, but he also has fantastic assist potential with his role in set pieces and advanced positioning this season.

Ben Chilwell (£5.1m) has finally emerged as the Fantasy asset we were hoping for at Leicester. After registering strong underlying figures in the early part of the campaign he goes into Gameweek 13 on the back of two assists and two clean sheets in his four previous appearances. In that time he has averaged six points per game. Leicester’s fixtures have stiffened a little but still hold some promise with Brighton, Watford and Fulham their next three opponents.

Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) drops a few places as Tottenham’s run of games gets harder and he struggles with a thigh injury. Spurs now rank 17th on the Season Ticker for defensive potential and it is not known how long Trippier will be plagued by this knock. He has pulled out of the England squad for the next round of matches.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) remains the go-to Newcastle defensive option despite missing out on a third successive return in Gameweek 13. The American right-back has still averaged five points per game since Gameweek 10 and still benefits from an appealing run of games. Only Brighton and Wolves rank higher than Newcastle for defensive potential on the Season Ticker between now and Gameweek 16. Meanwhile, Kiko Femenia (£4.3m) stays at the foot of the list having averaged 5.5 points in his last four appearances.

What's the thoughts on City's clean sheet potential over the next 5 games anyways?

I love having Fraser in my team but could this work?

    Mendy + Fraser > Dunk + Sane -4?

I'm not sure on Sane. Mahrez has started 4 of the last 5 games but was out of favour when Mendy was previously injured.

With Mendy out I really think Sane will start more often than not.

It's all to do with the way they attack. When Mendy plays, he naturally stays wider meaning Sterling can play ahead of him and attack the inside, but when it's Delph he moves inside meaning the wide player ahead of him needs to maintain width. Sane is the best player to do this, but I admit it's a big risk for 9.2

No I agree with that theory. I am just a bit weary of getting him atm because of Mahrez starting more

    Pat | Hart
    Robo | Alonso | Mendy | Doherty | AWB
    Salah | Hazard | FAnderson | Fraser | Guendouzi
    Aguero | Wilson | Ings

    Thoughts? 2FT
    a) Mendy / Fraser / Hart > Dunk / Dsilva / 4.0 GK -4
    b) Mendy > Digne or Dunk (save FT)
    c) Mendy / Fraser > Digne / Martial (0.1 itb)
    d) Mendy / Fraser > Digne / Bsilva (0.1 itb)
    e) Mendy / Fraser > Dunk / Martial (0.5 itb)
    f) Mendy / Fraser > Dunk / Bsilva (0.5 itb)

Possibly, but it depends on who you're considering as a replacement. I understand Laporte is not in the France squad, so if you're getting him, why lose the 0.1? (or 0.2)

Yes, I think most of the yellows will disappear come kick off next weekend. Mendy and Stephens are definitely out though. I STILL have Peltier in my team. I want Lacazette (actually, I want Auba but can't afford him) within the next 2-3 GWs so why not now? I feel I should get rid of Mane too.

Hey guys, with mendy and Maddison out, need your suggestions on which pair to go for -
    1. TAA, Anderson
    2. Sane, 4.0 defender
    3. David Silva, dunk/yedlin

I really want to have a city winger, apart from Aguero. However, not sure of the rotation between sterling, mahrez and sane.

Can't believe have 5 of my squad flagged as injured: Lacazette, Richarlison, Mendy, AWB, Martial.

I'm guessing those that are genuinely injured or most likely to miss the next GW are Mendy and AWB, agree?

City defence is not essential. Other defenders can give better value through attacking returns even if they keep fewer clean sheets. Eg: Alonso, Doherty, Robertson and Trippier post gw 14.

GW1 rank is your rank amongst all those who started in GW1

So there will be less people that started in GW1 than overall players now, hence your rank will be different as some of the newer people will be above you

Hehe... It's because there are a couple of people who started Gameweek 2 who are currently placed above you in OR. Also, if you have a Gameweek 1 rank, it's a given that you've started from the beginning of the season 😉

Tinkering with my options, which I am unlikely to act on until after Int'l matches. What do you think?

    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, Mendy*
    Salah, Haz, Martial, Fraser
    Aguero, Wilson

    (Foster) (Duffy, Diangana*, Success*)

    A) Mendy, Success > Jimmy, Digne / Chilwell (-4)
    B) Mendy, Diangana > Kenedy, Laporte (-4)
    C) Mendy > Laporte (FT +0.5itb)
    D) Mendy > Digne (FT +1.6itb)
    E) Let Mendy be benched (+ lose TV) and play Duffy, get 2FT for GW14

I think I am going to hold onto both Fraser and Wilson for this GW as they could both get returns against ARS defence and then reassess for GW14

    Appreciate the opinions!

Good team. Can see the logic in keeping Fraser and Wilson this week.

I'd probably go D, which would give you the option of bringing in a City midfielder next week for the Bournemouth home game. Not against E either as Duffy could do well this week, Leicester really struggling in front of goal

How does the comparison work with FPL with regards to a good rank. Around here, 10k at FPL is deemed a good rank, how would you determine what a good rank is at the Sky game?

Top 500 I would say. I got inside top 2k last year but didn’t put too much effort into it.

Thought so, made a complete hash of my transfers so far and still placed 5k with 18 transfers left.

Hoping for a good overhaul in Feb

After a top 2k finish last year I completely forgot about my team after 3 weeks this year. It’s really not as fun as FPL and a single missed week can kill your rank given you make captaincy choices every day of matches. The only time I remember SkyFF now is when I see your username because you’re the only other person I have come across playing it.

Is Jonny a viable option short term? Three of four fixtures look appealing and I have doubts over Doherty's injury.

Other consideration is Digne despite the fact Everton have conceded 15 in 12 matches, I just don't have a lot of faith in them keeping cleanies.

For what it's worth I had the same miniscus surgery as Mendy just did, I was out a good six weeks granted I'm not a professional footballer but would be very surprised if he's back before Boxing Day.

There are 9 GW'S in the 5 weeks after the IB too so there's no real way to carry Mendy through that period unfortunately.

Hopefully he's back for GW22 at about 6.0m

Risky to make transfers this early i feel.... but...

Exact Money to do Mendy and D.Ward to Bennet and Martial for -4.. Worth it?

most people are arguing today whether sterling or sane is the better option. how about having both? it looks much more convincing than mane/salah double up.

Sterling is the better option, but owning both could be fun

    Potential wildcard team (3-5-2) :

    A)

    Ederson / 4.0

    Bennett / Kiko / Alonso / Dunk / Wan-B

    Hazard / Salah / Fraser / Martial / Richarlison

    Aguero / Arnautovic / Success

    or

    Fabianski / Patricio

    Bennett / Gomez / Alonso / Dunk / Wan-B

    Hazard / Salah / Fraser / Martial / Richarlison

    Aguero / Arnautovic / Success

    Any tips?

If you don't have Erderson you really have to get Laporte or another playing City defender. Otherwise you'll be regretting missing out on CS City points.

Also Laporte can't injured over the IB as he's not playing. No point losing money and waiting.

I know what you’re alluding to but not true if the money saved can be used to score more points elsewhere.

The 0.1 increase in Laporte about to happen and the drop on Mendy's price. You never know how important these small amounts may be, in getting a player in who's become "essential"

I do know actually. That small amount is never of any significance and very few, if any, defenders are ever "essential".

What about ignoring City's defence and going with 3 attacking players? Their attacking stats are so far ahead of everyone else I'm considering it

Too risky to make early moves even if it means taking a 0.1m drop on Mendy.

Hi....Any guidance at this stage on what to do here with mendy?

    Salah hazard richi deulofeu stephens
    Kun arnie Wilson

A...bog standard mendy to laporte / digne

B.....mendy and deulofeu to dunk and martial - 4 (exact money as things stand)

Brighton Wolves and Newcastle rank among the top teams in the defensive watchlist. Surely we should look to replace Mendy from one of their assets and use the extra funs to upgrade elsewhere.
