Newcastle marrying fixtures with form after third successive win

Newcastle United continued their fine run of form with a win over Burnley on Monday evening, their third straight Premier League victory and a result that lifts them four points clear of the drop zone.

The match would have been of little interest to many Fantasy Premier League managers, with not one outfield player on show owned by more than 3.3% of FPL bosses – and even that was substitute Joselu.

The most popular Fantasy asset to line up at Turf Moor, Joe Hart, saw his clean sheet wiped out after three minutes, while Burnley’s two most-owned outfielders – James Tarkowski and Johann Berg Gudmundsson – were unavailable through injury and illness.

Not one of the three Newcastle players involved in their side’s two goals had an ownership greater than 0.5%, meanwhile.

We’ve got all the goals, assists, injury news, FPL talking points and manager quotes from the final match of Gameweek 13.

Burnley 1-2 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Sam Vokes (£5.3m) | Ben Mee own-goal, Ciaran Clark (£4.4m)
  • Assists: Ben Mee (£4.8m) | Federico Fernandez (£4.5m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m)

Newcastle United have featured regularly in our most-recent Frisking the Fixtures articles, having had the “easiest” run of Premier League matches – according to our Season Ticker – from Gameweeks 9-18.

The Magpies have certainly capitalised on their favourable fixture swing since the defeat to Brighton in late-October, having gone four matches unbeaten and having racked up two clean sheets along the way.

Not many Fantasy managers will have prospered from Rafael Benitez’s side’s latest success, however, with their backline unable to register a fifth shut-out of 2018/19 and not one of United’s six players who could boast an FPL ownership of 1% or higher leaving with anything more than appearance points.

Benitez was deprived of the services of Paul Dummett (£4.4m) on Monday night, with the absence of their first-choice left-back perhaps the catalyst for the Newcastle manager’s decision to ditch a flat back four.

The Magpies instead lined up with DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) and Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) as wing-backs, rolling out a fluid 3-4-2-1 with the ball and retreating to a 5-4-1 when out of possession.

Kenedy (£4.9m) and Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) provided Salomon Rondon‘s (£5.7m) support up front, though the attacking trio failed to really catch the eye from a Fantasy perspective despite putting in industrious displays both with and without the ball.

Kenedy chanced his arm on five occasions but failed to hit the target with any of his efforts, a recurring theme for the budget Brazilian this season – of the FPL midfielders to have scored at least one Premier League goal in 2018/19, Kenedy has the worst conversion rate of all (3.8%), with 21 of his 26 shots not even forcing the opposition goalkeeper into a save.

It was Yedlin and Ritchie who particularly caught the eye, with the Scotland winger delivering more crosses than any other FPL midfielder in Gameweek 13 – one of which led to Ciaran Clark‘s (£4.4m) headed winner.

Ritchie should have been on the scoresheet himself and consequently accorded Yedlin an assist, but the former Bournemouth player astonishingly blazed wide with the goal gaping after his American team-mate had seen a shot saved by Joe Hart (£4.5m).

Yedlin would be an attractive proposition as an attacking wing-back in a side capable of collecting the odd clean sheet and with an excellent run of forthcoming fixtures, though it remains to be seen whether Benitez persists with a three-man backline or reverts to his more trusted 4-4-1-1 in the matches ahead.

Federico Fernandez (£4.5m) was perhaps United’s standout defender at the back, racking up the most clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBIs) of any player on show as Burnley peppered Newcastle’s centre-halves with long ball after long ball.

The former Swansea stopper played a big part in Newcastle’s opening goal, meanwhile, with his shot looping in via a telling deflection off Ben Mee (£4.8m).

Fabian Schar (£4.6m) had another solid game alongside Clark and Fernandez, and it certainly doesn’t appear that the Magpies are missing their injured captain Jamaal Lascelles (£4.7m) too much.

Indeed, Benitez said pre-match that even when fit, Lascelles has plenty to do to reclaim his starting berth:

I think it is important to have competition in each position.

When you have a player like Jamaal Lascelles who done so well last season, and he is available again, then he comes back in and has to compete [for his place].

That can only be good news for the team.

Benitez paid tribute to Schar, Clark and Fernandez in his post-match press conference:

It was a difficult game. We knew it could be tough, they are a strong team, very physical with the two strikers, wingers with pace. The three centre-backs did a great job.

Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m) was an unused substitute on his return to fitness, meanwhile, with Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m) and Mohamed Diame (£4.9m) now in pole position in central midfield.

Burnley defenders’ fall from grace as value-for-money budget options to overpriced Fantasy assets has been a feature of this season, with the Clarets conceding two goals (or more) in a match for the seventh time in 2018/19.

Sean Dyche’s side have shipped 27 goals after 13 Gameweeks of this campaign; they had conceded on only ten occasions at the same stage of 2017/18.

The margin of defeat could have been even bigger, too, given that Ritchie missed from point-blank range and Joselu (£4.9m) cracked the upright late on.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what the issue is, though Benitez offered up some interesting comments on Burnley’s backline when discussing his own counter-attacking approach.

They had the full-backs always high, making crosses, so as soon as we regain [possession] we have more space and then they have just the two centre-backs. They were always really, really high, so in some games maybe, if they keep organisation, you cannot play counter-attacking in the same way.

Dyche had his own take on his side’s defensive lapses:

We’ve conceded a lucky goal and a poor one, and that’s something we have tried to eradicate over the past few weeks, after a tough start.

We’ve given too many of them away this year, and we’re still trying to iron out those details.

The second [goal] is just something where we were attacking everything last season, but that comes with a bit of nerves, a bit of edge.

I think we’ve given a performance tonight, but we can’t concede soft goals, because it’s very difficult in the Premier League when you’re two-down.

James Tarkowski (£4.8m) didn’t feature after a hernia operation, so Kevin Long (£4.2m) was again called upon to partner Mee at the heart of the Burnley backline.

Ben Gibson (£4.8m), who has undergone his own surgery on a hernia this season, was fit enough for a place on the substitutes’ bench.

The Clarets were without Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), who had seemingly recovered from a calf injury in the days leading up to Gameweek 13 but who apparently fell ill over the weekend.

Dyche said:

He’s had that bug that’s going around. He wasn’t even here, he wasn’t even on the bench. We kept him away for obvious reasons.

It’s been 48 hours [as of] today, obviously you can’t play if you’re under the weather.

The hosts were toothless in the first half until Sam Vokes (£5.3m) halved the deficit on 40 minutes, looping an excellent header over Martin Dubravka (£5.3m) after a long punt from Mee.

That set the scene for what followed, with Burnley pumping a succession of high crosses into the box as they chased an equaliser.

The Clarets’ attacks were one-dimensional and agricultural, but ultimately quite effective in carving out chances after the break – the battering rams of Vokes and Chris Wood (£6.2m) having 11 goal attempts and 18 penalty box touches between them without further success.

Wood had perhaps the better of the opportunities for much of the game, shooting straight at Dubravka, blazing over on the half-volley from 12 yards and having a goalbound shot blocked by Yedlin before Vokes headed an excellent chance over in the final seconds of the match.

Dyche was positive about his side’s attacking play, in particular, the dangerous-looking – if not clinical – partnership of Wood and Vokes:

Woody has played well, he had a couple of really good chances, and Vokesy as well, it’s frustrating beyond the result, because I think we’ve given a performance.

Woody’s had chances, Vokesey has, even in the dying seconds, so I think the character of the side is coming back, the energy of the side was very good, and some of the quality, some of the play was really good.

It was a high pass count for us, which often happens against a 5-4-1 playing on the counter, and at the end, still that final pass, that final moment of quality, but there was more of that tonight.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Hart; Lowton, Long, Mee, Taylor; Lennon, Cork, Defour (Hendrick 83′), Brady (Barnes 83′); Vokes, Wood.

Newcastle United XI (3-4-2-1): Dubravka; Schar, Fernandez, Clark; Yedlin, Diame, Ki, Ritchie; Kenedy (Hayden 90′), Perez; Rondon (Joselu 70′).

Which 2 City players do you think will score most in next 1 month:

    Kun, Sterling, Sane, DSilva

So far I have Kun and want Sterling from GW17 (If Haz aint injured). I hope around GW17 their hectic schedule will ease so Sterling wont be rotated again for 4-5 matches

If you double up on Sane and Sterling, you're assured of atleast one of them starting every week and in a few/most games, both of them. The double is cheaper yet more explosive than a Kun/Sterling double up.

With Kun being the main striker, you'd expect him to be preserved for the bigger games like Chelsea away where you don't fancy him to haul which means a likely rest in one of the easier fixtures.

Speaking of Bilva, he doesn't feature on the flanks anymore. He plays central alongside Dilva/Gundo and Ferna. Seems like someone is not up-to-date. 🙂

That's because Sane had off the field issues and Mahrez was still settling in. Don't see that happening again unless two of Sterling, Sane and Mahrez get injured. Also, when asked about competition of places on the flanks, he always talks about Sane-Sterling-Mahrez.

The Eye Test - Did any players, preferably those that might be going under the radar, catch your eye during any games or highlights that you’ve seen over the weekend?

Heung-Min Son has had a quiet start to the season up until now which was not surprising given his summer exploits for South Korea, firstly at the World Cup and then in inspiring his team to victory at the Asian Games. The Tottenham midfielder came to life this weekend though and could easily have added more to his first league goal of the season in a vibrant display against Chelsea. Given the Lilywhites favourable fixtures to come from GW15 onwards, Son is a much cheaper route than the likes of Harry Kane into the covering the Spurs attack and indeed, at just £8.3m and averaging 176 points over the last two seasons, he could prove to be an absolute steal.

There were high hopes for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon this season but in his first season of Premier League football and with the Cottagers ever changing formation, including stints at left back and on the right for the young englishman, it is understandable that the 18 year old is taking his time to settle into top flight football. Sessegnon showed his potential this week though - playing on the left of an attacking three behind Aleksandar Mitrovic and chipping in with two assists as part of a encouraging performance all round for the Fulham front four at home to Southampton. Obviously the standard of opposition needs to be taken into account here, but with four favourable home games in six from GW15, Sessegnon could be one to watch.

Which players caught your eye this gameweek and why?

      Tottenham.

Son, Dele, Eriksen, Kane, Aurier all stood out to me

Aurier could be one to watch, wouldn't be surprised to see Aurier displace Trippier (even when he has recovered from his knock)

          trippier has been found out

he is paceless and defensively often found wanting

aurier will genuinely challenge him in my opinion

Bias aside, Trippier has been defensively exposed on quite a few occasions this season. Aurier is a card magnet because of his discipline issues but saying that he's 'nowhere near' Trippier is laughable.

Trippier has been terrible since the world cup. He's still just ahead of Aurier, but there isn't enough in it to stop Poch rotating heavily. I'd steer clear of both for FPL.

I think Trippier is the offensive right back, Aurier the defensive option. Trippier gives them an awful lot in terms of crossing accuracy and dead ball situations, but the price they pay is his defensive mistakes. He made poor errors against Man City and Wolves recently which cost his team clean sheets. Aurier hasn't played that much this season, but I remember him being selected for an important game away at the San Siro just before he got injured. I think Poch trusts him slightly more defensively, and he is more athletic and pacy than Trippier. In short, I think they will rotate and possibly do so according to opponent, with Trippier playing against the weaker sides and Aurier against the stronger.

Antonio, started up front with Arnautovic and managed to get in behind the city defence and create chances for himself a lot. With easier fixtures coming up if he keeps his place could be an interesting mid-priced option in midfield. Also Sane, Son and Eriksen looked fantastic and I can certainly see them scoring a lot of points soon

The obvious candidates - Sane, Sigurdsson, Mitrovic and the Tottenham forward players - Alli, Eriksen, Son and Kane - great timing for those with a Wildcard up their sleeve.

Also, going slightly more under the radar...

Mkhitaryan - for those looking at Arsenal attacking options ahead of their good run, and without the space for a premium striker, one to monitor. 7 shots and 2 key passes at Bournemouth, plus Ozil seemingly out of favour.

Huddersfield - defensively very sound at Wolves and their best performance of the season. 3 good home fixtures coming up, and for those holding an Everton defender, they are a great rotation option. Schindler at 4.3?

Bavies must be one of the biggest under the radar options... Danny Rose is dead again, and Bavies is pushing up that left flank like a madman.

Disagree with this. Davies has been getting better recently, but was still no more than 6/10 on Saturday. Rose does appear to be dead though, so Davies is still the most reliable way into the Spurs defence.

Managers continuously worrying about rotation for City mids like last season. I think it's absolutely naive to think that way.

The likes of Sterling and Sane are explosive differentials. Even the odd benching here and there won't matter much as they are shoe ins for double digit hauls most weeks.

Ride the tide with them and you will rise up in ranks in no time. I got in Sterling and ditched Salah on my WC in GW 5 much to the ridicule of the community here but haven't looked back since having gone from 681k ➡ 29k.

City are gonna put past multiple goals most weeks against most of the teams and a canny manager wouldn't hesitate to get those mids just for the off chance of them getting rested at 'some point in time'. They return much more than you lose out with their benchings in case it comes to that.

Strike the iron while it's hot! 😉

Completely agree. I think the whole concept of players being 'nailed on' needs to be reconsidered when it comes to the top teams. City mids, Pool defenders, rotation will happen but the upsides of when players play too good to ignore or avoid.

Shoe ins for double digits most week? Sterling and Sane have 6 so far from a possible 26. I wouldn’t call that ‘shoe in for most weeks’.

      1. pundit of punts
        • 11 Years

Sterling has 4 double digit hauls from 11 starts with only 3 blanks.

Sane has 2 double digit hauls in 6 starts with NO BLANKS when he started the game.

That's as good as it gets in FPL terms in my book.

So they aren’t actually shoe ins for double digits most weeks then.

I’ve enjoyed Sterling big time in recent weeks but they aren’t shoe ins for double digits most weeks otherwise both would be in every active team around.

Shoe-ins doesn't mean they would actually deliver double digits every single GW. But smart money would be on them to get double digits before the games start and that's what you would want from an FPL perspective. They hardly blank which also makes their case stronger.

Shoo-in - "one that is a certain and easy winner" (Merriam Webster).

              4 out of 11 - not certain.
              2 out of 6 - not certain.

I agree with you that they don't need to deliver "every single GW", but at least 5 out of 6 seems a reasonable expectation for them to be a shoo-in.

Your claim is false and as a parenthes, your spelling is wrong (it's shoo-in, not shoe-in).

That said Sane and Sterling are clearly great options, but I think me and Team Cruel are both to big pedants not to comment on this.

    Patricio - Hamer

    Sterling - Sane - Martial - Richarlison - Schneiderlin
    Aguero - Arnautovic - Jimenez

To say it is not daft to take on any of these means the template is getting harder to find.

I can reduce that down to 30. Some of the players in there aren’t worth considering.

But yes the new template will probably setlle in 2-3 weeks now.

I can see more Spurs&Arsenal players after gw15.
Also i dont think Wolves def is template anymore, people are just stuck with it because they are chasing these big hitters like Sterling (right call tho)

Wolves had a bad result but I would not say they are dead yet. Their pricing tends to keep them there and using a tfr to get them out will tend to be on WC

The Template only exists in the realms of FFS and other such sites.

There are literally millions of teams who do just fine without it.

Well maybe not millions because if your OR is 1m or lower then there's something else wrong.

But you know what I mean.

There is no doubt using info from these sites helps rather than hinders. Not saying one must listen to everything though. Definitely creates bandwagons.

I'd say it's going to take more than one bad GW for the top 10K to ditch the template...

Not because Sterling or some of the Arsenal / Spurs players aren't the best choice but because sticking with the template provides a buffer against massive rank drops. Every player around me suffers the same fate..... Up OR down... And lots still have all their chips for those nailbiter double GWs....

This week was the best example - I had a GW rank of 5 million but only dropped 800 places......

I agree with all you say but the natural change is arriving and do we want to stay around 10k or make a serious move up with the chance of having the opposite. We must still keep some originality. Cheers anyway.

So this is my GW14 team - any ideas? I'm looking at Hazard > Sterling after Fulham.

    1 FT, 0.8 ITB

    Patricio
    AWB - Doherty - Laporte - Robertson - Alonso
    Hazard - Salah
    Wilson - Arnautovic - Aguero

    Hamer - Fraser - Brooks - Hojbjerg

Such a horrible gameweek! 34 points and red arrows everywhere! Help!
I've already made one transfer which leaves me with:

    Pat
    Alonso Dunk Robbo
    Hazard Sterling Mane Richarlison
    Wilson Kun Arnie

    (Hamer/Bennett/AWB/Hudson-Odoi)

    0.1ITB, 0FTs

Any obvious changes I need to make for hits? Thoughts? Thanks all

Removing Kun for a hit ahead of Bournemouth at home isn't greatly appealing. I do like the move in general, though.

Cant find any logic in this notion that sterling potentially being rotated and possibly not even getting minutes for certain games works out in the long run because you'll get his next haul??hes an 11+ m player thats not a certain starter

He's scored 8 more points than any other player this season, despite missing 2 games. He may occasionally be benched but nothing to worry about if you have a strong squad. If you don't get him you're going to miss out on his huge hauls, and believe me more and more are going to start captaining him too.

      1. boc610
        • 12 Years

Theres not much fodder out there capable of plugging an 11m gap if he gets rested...and the cacophony of whinging on here when he is benched after being captained will cause an earthquake (and it will be from the crowd that said they are happy with his added rotation risk)

I can see what you're saying, but personally, I could take a benching this weekend knowing he's just delivered 16 points, in a week where Salah got 8 and Hazard just 1. More than happy for Brooks (usually my first sub) to step in when needed.

I'd like to risk it with sterling, even with rotation issues. Who to lose?

Currently at 100k but I’ve been down to around 30k then back up to 220k.
