FPL Team News and Injury Round-up: Gameweek 16

The headline team news ahead of Gameweek 16 arguably came from Jurgen Klopp’s press conference, with the Liverpool boss confirming that Andrew Robertson (dead leg) was fit to feature – while also stating that Sadio Mane (foot injury) was unlikely to be involved at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Klopp said:

Sadio is now out [on the training pitch] and tries to run for the first time, so it doesn’t sound like he will be ready for tomorrow.

Andy Robertson is fine. Robbo pretty much played most of the games in a very intense position so that’s why decided to give him eight hours off (versus Burnley).

Joe Gomez (leg fracture) looks set to be out for the rest of the year and, with Dejan Lovren (concussion) also unavailable this weekend, Trent-Alexander Arnold and Virgil van Dijk‘s owners can be confident of their defensive assets starting on the south coast.

Klopp discussed Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk’s workloads over the coming weeks, which could increase with Gomez out.

The Liverpool boss said about Alexander-Arnold:

I have a plan [for the right-back role]. We will see what we will do, but we have still other options, of course. A lot of players who can play that position.

On van Dijk, Klopp added:

It’s not the same intensity [playing at centre-back] but of course it’s not cool. But now especially with Joe out, Dejan not available, we don’t have to think too much about that.

Elsewhere, the typically taciturn Pep Guardiola at least confirmed that Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne would be unavailable for the trip to Chelsea, adding that both players will be “back soon”.

Maurizio Sarri has a fully fit squad for that encounter but did offer up some interesting quotes on Marcos Alonso, who has been struggling for form – if not FPL returns – lately.

When asked if Alonso was tired, the Chelsea boss said:

He played in all 14 [sic] matches in the Premier League but he didn’t play in the Europa League, he didn’t play in the cup. For me he is not tired. I want to see the last training and then I will decide.

Emerson is a good option. I have to consider some details. For example, without Alonso, we could have problems at set pieces.

Jose Mourinho will use Friday’s training session to assess Anthony Martial (hamstring), meanwhile, along with three defenders who are carrying knocks/muscle fatigue: Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly.

Kieran Trippier (groin) and Juan Foyth (hamstring) have been added to Spurs’ lengthy injury list, with their opponents this weekend, Leicester City, set to be without Jamie Vardy (muscle).

Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans at least return from injury to bolster the Foxes’ backline.

Rob Holding (knee) has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a ruptured ACL, which may force a rethink of Unai Emery’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

Mesut Ozil (back), Nacho Monreal (hamstring) and Aaron Ramsey (ankle) are also doubts for Gameweek 16.

Jonny remain the only injury-related absentee for Wolves, who welcome Ruben Neves back from suspension.

Marco Silva, Claudio Ranieri and Roy Hodgson reported no new injuries in their press conferences, too, while Javi Gracia “thinks” all of his players will be available.

Marko Arnautovic (hamstring) is unlikely to feature again in 2018, with West Ham also without Jack Wilshere (ankle) for the visit of Crystal Palace.

Paul Dummett (hamstring) could make a comeback for Newcastle after returning to training, while Matt Ritchie is back from suspension.

Neil Warnock all but confirmed that Callum Paterson would start up front again, adding that Victor Camarasa is now his first-choice penalty-taker.

Cardiff are this weekend up against Southampton, who will have Ralph Hasenhuttl in charge for the first time.

The new Saints boss didn’t provide any injury updates but said his formation of choice was a high-pressing 4-2-2-2.

Bournemouth have problems in central midfield with Lewis Cook (ACL) out for the rest of the season and Dan Gosling (knee) also ruled out.

Glenn Murray (shoulder) and Jose Izquierdo (knock) will be assessed ahead of Brighton’s trip to Burnley, who will also make a late call on Steven Defour (knock).

Huddersfield will be without the suspended Steve Mounie and Philip Billing but Chris Lowe (shoulder) has returned to training and could feature against Arsenal.

No pressing issues with my team this week, thankfully.

I can bank the transfer or get Fab in for Ryan.

I may want to offload Salah/Robertson next week and try and get an Arsenal lad in, but it will be at the expense of Wilson, which could be foolish! But the 2 ft coulde be useful if Arsenal go on a rampage

However, I've had it up to HERE with Ryan conceding every week since I got him.

And this is Ryans last supposed favourable fixture

Ultimately if you don't get rid this GW you should next anyhow

I'm in the same Ryan boat however I did get the last haul, with blanks ever since - over the same period fabs has return 9 points more

Emery has given us every sign that his team is adaptable to the oponent and even to the ever-changing situation in-match. His management is dynamic and pragmactic, and he is not afraid to make changes and "experiment".

There's no guarantee he will continue with three centre backs with Kolasinac and Bellerin as wingbacks. Attacking players will return from periods on the sidelines and produce even more unpredictability from Emery. If a settled side is to emerge, we are not on the verge of that side right now, given the current injuries and fixture congestion.

If he changes to a back four, either with the teamsheet or during a game-in-progress, we essential have Bellerin as the only nailed option, along with maybe one centre back, who is currently unkown (to me, at least). Monreal may not be in his prime, and may even be on his way out of the club in the Summer, but he is the real deal for Arsenal fans, and probably better as a left-back than Kolasinac. At best for Kolasinac owners, you could expect Kolasinac to be rested on occassion; at worst, Monreal will be oust Kolasinac entirely in this system.

If Emery sticks with three centre-backs, the competition for Kolasinac is not really reduced. This is because Monreal can play LWB, and isn't necessarily required to play centre-back long-term. Legitimate competition for three centre-back positions would come from Mustafi, Sokratis, Koscielny and Monreal (notice, that is more than three players). The unexpectedly in-form Holding may be sidelined, but we must also not forget promising Mavrapanos, who is expected back this month, to add to the competition. This could allow Monreal to compete with Kolasinac for the LWB position outright on occassion, if not frequently.

There are other players who can play centre-back too, if required, which would allow for the more agreeable posibility of resting players during the busy period. These include Lichtsteiner, Xhaka and Jenkinson (the latter played in this position satisfactorily in Europe recently).

As with any team, it's posible to shoehorn certain players into certain positions whether they were built for purpose or not. However, I genuinely believe that Iwobi could also be utilised as a LWB. I've seen heatmaps that suggest he's essentially played in this position before, tracking back and sticking to the left-hand side of the pitch, though he's just not had to hug the touchline so tightly before. And Some games won't require a top-heavy hard-tackler in that position. There's also Maitland-Niles, who has played perfectly impressively as a left-sided defender on multiple occassions.

In short, Kolasinac may well be too good to be true. He may well be only 4.9m, but this is simply 5.0m in disguise. Bellerin is only 5.4m, and essentially nailed on. If you wouldn't pay 5.4 for Bellerin, I would suggest that paying almost as much for Kolasinac is a mistake. As an Arsenal fan, I would love to see Kolasinac continue is journey towards cult status. He's an exciting player. But conversely, I care more about the team playing well, and I'm excited by the prospect of seeing the players Emery chooses to the job each week, which may or may not include Kolasinac.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but not necessarily with the last paragraph.

Also: "He may well be only 4.9m, but this is simply 5.0m in disguise." - what?

As an aside, for anyone worrying about Arsenal defensive assets, the way I think about it is:

If Kolasinac/Bellerin gets rested and or/does not perform in the next 2/3 weeks, Digne is a straight swap at 4.9m with fantastic fixtures. You can find the funds elsewhere to upgrade that spot inf you need and likewise, you can downgrade Bellerin/Kolasinac too.

Good point about the switch to Digne, but I'd suggest Digne is a better shout anyway. You can bench him for poor fixtures, as most want a decent bench in this period anyway. Whereas with Kolasinac, you don't know when he's going to have a good game (starting) or not (1pt cameo or 0 mins).

By "5.0 in disguise" I mean he's not a bargain just because he's in the 4 million category. He's actually not much cheaper than Bellerin, and other 5.0 players of the past, most notably TAA, had a lot more going for than at that price imo

I agree - think Digne is overall better, but willing to take the risk given Everton's short-term fixtures... I am on a wildcwr however.

(Could of course bite me in the ass if they get another few 0-0s!)

Apologies - I half got the gist on what you were saying, but it wasn't too clear. I don't think may will be overly blindsided by the 4.# in his pricetag, but agree TAA for example is just as good (albeit worse fixtures)... Problem is many have him already 🙂

With this unbeaten run do you ser Emrey changing it up? Im going for him on a punt anyways, if Monreal comes in i will just transfer him to someone else. 0.5 can be quite a bit on a WC btw.

Defensively Kola is awful. He's good as an attacking wing-back though. I think a major reason for Emery choosing to play 3-4-3 is that he can't trust Kola to play full-back in a back four. Having one full-back in a back four who can't defend (Bellerin) is manageable, but with two it just doesn't work, so he's been forced to use three at the back.
IMO the sooner Monreal is back the better. He's much better defensively and can do overlapping runs down the flank just as well as Kolasinac.

While it's still on topic about Kolasinac and back 3, I think this week vs HUD Emery would prefer back 3 even with injured Holding.

They were left exposed vs Wolves, a team play with back 3 and can handle wing areas well. In the following match Arsenal reverted to 3 at the back and started doing better.

I can see similar type in Huddersfield which normally play with back three. I'm nowhere near tactical expert but this is my thoughts and hopefully can help.

Thanks Axle. Interestingly though, the last team Huddersfield played who had 3 at the back was Wolves! And Huddersfield won 2-0!

Maybe Emery will need to think of a new formation that Huddersfield won't be expecting. 😀

What to do with Hazard and Alonso? Good fixtures after City, but loosing one or both could enable Sané, Auba or Laca (or two of those three).

    Current team:
    Fab (Foster)
    Robbo, Doherty, AWB (Alonso, Bednarek)
    Sterling, Hazard, Fraser, Richarlison, Gunnarsson
    Wilson, Kane (Arnie)

Agree, Syd. Will be hugely surprised if he doesn't start.

If you think about it, starting Emerson vs City when he's been used to playing against the likes of POAK & Vidi, is almost madness. Such a jump in quality and who knows if Emerson's ready for that?

Whilst I don't agree with Xabi above (I do not think Alonso gets 'phased' out), I think it's definitely understandable that Emerson takes a game or so away from him in this Christmas period.

Alonso is obviously carrying something (he's not 'tired'; Sarri has said as much) & Sarri does not like to rotate. Will he endanger his first choice LB (and thus his 'nailed' status) by forcing him to play every match? Likely not... But he's still Sarri and neither him nor Conté have chosen Emerson over Alonso - there's definitely a reason for that.

That frees up some funds to get a better midfield bench fodder too.

£9.4m for 2 defenders, need one from each.

    1. Digne or Kola
    2. Yedlin or Balbuena (already have Fabianski)

Go for him, may start only 3 of the next 5 but he is good enough to do the damage in limited gametime as well.

Plus if you watch him play, you will atleast feel good as an owner

Eriksen likely to be benched this GW anyhow - there after who knows what this chronic issue is and how well it can be managed

Yeah that's why he was out so long - any chronic issue can be managed but rarely does it get cured or goes completely

Might mean he doesn't play all the time

Something to do with his stomach

I've serious problems... Arnautovic & Gomez out + Duffy suspended. Peltier & Diangana not playing and Martial potentially out.

    A) Was planning on doing Salah/Hazard & Arnautovic > Kane 8.3/6.0 before Gomez injury for -4.

    B) Gomez > 5.1 defender.

    C) Do A) & B) for -8?

    !!!

    Fab
    Doherty Robbo Alonso
    Salah Sane Richarlison Fraser
    Kane (C) Wilson Jimenez

Bench: Laporte, Awb, Stephens + Pat

Would you change something? Wilson + Fraser against Robertson. Sane against Alonso.

Already on a -4 but what do you boys think of the following move for -8? I was heavily hit by injury and suspension midweek (Duffy, Arnie, Murray, Kenedy / Robbo Barkley)

Team: Ederson / AWB Robbo TAA Alonso / Fraser Sterling Felipe Anderson / Kane Auba Murray

    Subs: Hamer Kenedy Barkley Duffy

    A) Murray > Chicharito
    B) Murray > Rondon
    C) Murray > Mitrovic
    D) Barkley > Schurrle

    RMT! 1FT and 0.8 ITB.

    Fabianski - Stekelenburg
    Alonso - Laporte - Robertson - Doherty - AWB
    Salah - Sane - Richarlison - Fraser - Chalobah
    Kane - Arnie - Jimenez

    What to do?
    a) Alonso + Arnie --> Kolasinac + Laca
    b) Save FT and do Salah + Arnie --> Eriksen + Auba next GW
