New template forming after extensive Wildcard usage

With the Christmas period looming large for Fantasy managers, there have been increases in Wildcard uses from week to week.

Gameweek 16 saw the continuation of the heavy Wildcard usage among the top 10 thousand FPL managers, especially.

4.54% of them activated the chip compared to 3.64% in Gameweek 15. This leaves around 12% first Wildcards left for managers to use in December.

There are clues to the new template when we look at how Gameweek 16 Wildcards compare with those from Gameweek 15. As you can see, the options selected are mostly similar across the two line-ups.

The two squads share 13 from a possible 15 players, which means Gameweek 15 Wildcarders benefited from many price changes which Gameweek 16 Wildcarders probably missed.

One of the two selection differences is Callum Wilson replacing the injured Marko Arnautovic in the front line, although ironically he also picked up an injury himself.

The second is the inclusion of Sead Kolasinac instead of Lucas Digne, with Arsenal’s fixtures looking better long-term compared to Everton’s.

The rest of the most selected Wildcard picks are the same except for slight changes in the ownership percentages of certain players.

For example, Wildcarders became more convinced of including Harry Kane (74.45% to 85.9%) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (61.26% to 70.70%) in their new squads this week. Meanwhile the likes of Marcos Alonso (54.12% to 30.4%) and Leroy Sane (60.71% to 53.96%) suffered marginal drops in their Wildcard representation.

One major thing many Wildcarders missed was the inclusion of hat-trick hero Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is now the highest-scoring player so far in Gameweek 16 with 21 points, and he’s only included in just 32.2% of Wildcards this week.

He is also not that highly owned in general among the top 10k teams, with only 39.5% ownership, raised to 52.1% effective ownership by factoring the captaincy in.

This meant his owners earned big rank jumps, especially with the latest captain poll winner Aubameyang (40.31%) scoring only five points.

Meanwhile, the popular Wilson and Trent Alexander-Arnold missed out on Saturday lunch-time which again raises the importance of having a good bench in December.

Running simulations of the exact autosubs that will take place for just the two of them in the top 10k indicates the following results. It is Aaron Wan-Bissaka who will gain the most increase of effective ownership, followed by Alonso and Ryan Fraser, as indicated in the following table.

PlayerIncrease in Effective Ownership after TAA and Wilson autosubs
Wan-Bissaka23.40%
Alonso11.88%
Fraser9.09%

Strong argument for bench boost chip?

    Patricio (BOU)
    Fabianski (ful)
    Alonso (bha)
    Balbuena (ful)
    Doherty (BOU)
    Holebas (CAR)
    Kolasinac (sou)
    Hazard (bha)
    Son (BUR)
    Sterling (EVE)
    Felipe Anderson (ful)
    Fraser (wol)
    Auba (sou)
    Jiminez (ful)
    Wilson (wol)

Otherwise I'm going to have a helluva time selecting my XI.

Or should I could on year-end rotation and be happy I have a strong bench?

    Thanks!

Not a good time to play a bench boost during Christmas, you don't know who will or won't play

What everyone normally does is use ur second wildcard the week before a double game week. Then use bench boost and have a 15 players playing two games in a week. We’ll try there best too

Sane was ok but Sterling was useless CF/False 9. Sterling shifted to left ot accommodate Jesus who didn't get a look in either.

Aguero out was the problem tbh

Frustrating, but it's probably ok to keep Sane

I don't expect many people to be interested, but here's how my wildcard fared so far:

Out: Alonso, Robertson, Hazard, David Silva, Martial (28 points)
In: Kolasinac, TAA, Sterling, Son, Felipe Anderson (36 points)

Can't complain overall. The only one I regret selling is Robertson, mostly because he reminded everyone of his attacking potential, but I'm hoping TAA got his rest now and will match him. Son and Anderson were great buys, and Kolasinac outscored Alonso so far.

Hazard of course beat Sterling - in an ideal world I was banking on a Chelsea blank, and to monitor Hazard's performances with a view to buy him back in 3-4 GWs time, might have to do it earlier now but I left the money in the bank for such an eventuality.

Of course, my front 3 were Kane, Lacazette (C) and Wilson, so lol at me I guess 😆 But that was not a product of my wildcard as I had them before and would've captained Lacazette regardless.

I can't be disappointed at the lack of Salah since I never had him and didn't consider getting him on my WC.

What about other wildcarders? Can't be all doom and gloom?

    1. Ynwalfc
      • 8 Years

I like Alonso and have him, he gets forward creating things every game, and yes Robertson. The other moves are good tho

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 4 months ago

I got Alonso in GW3 and he'd served me well. The clean sheet I can take if he doesn't produce attacking returns, since other players can match that for less. Not saying that he'll necessarily stay away from my team for too long though.

Brought in Auba, Fanderson, Siggy, Schindler, Gunnarson Sterling and Sane but sold Aguero, Salah, Mane, Stephens, Rich, Peltier (!!!) and Fraser. 48 points so far with Siggy to go.

I have Arnie and Wilson and both are injured but I also have 2 FTs. I have never had nor considered Hazard. I was concerned about losing Salah when I sold him. I may still bring him back in yet.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 4 months ago

48 points, not bad at all! Thankfully I never had Arnie myself - will save my transfer unless Wilson is confirmed out, or something happens in the midweek matches.

Funnily enough, another move I'm regretting is Bednarek to Chambers - I wanted to have three playing bench players for this busy time, only for the new manager to start Bednarek for the first time in ages, and for Chambers to go AWOL 😀

        1. The Big Fella
          • 7 Years

Cheers! I am still losing on my H2H though, annoyingly, by 1 point. I have Siggy to go and he has Rich and a Watford defender.

I was going to do Sterling and Arnie to Kane and Fraser but now I am thinking of Arnie and Schindler to Hernandez and Kolasinac.

Bad luck but this is to be expected over Xmas because of rotation. I also like having a playing bench, even if it is only an extra 1-3 points per player

      I haven't done this yet.

Out: Alonso, Hazard, Salah, Arnautovic, Patricio (36+Pat)
In: Kolasinac, Sterling, Sane, Aubameyang, Fabianski (17)

      I wish I hadn't done that.

Wilson should be back with minor hamstring tightness. Richarlison is a season keeper for mine and I’m partial to the Toffees. Son will be headed to the Asian Cup also and remains a bit of a rotation risk, blinding form though!

I seem to remember some kind of agreement that would let Son stay with Spurs? I may be making things up.

I think that was international duties based on Asian games, Asian Cup is a different beast

Found this, there was a compromise deal that allows him to miss the first two S. Korea matches in January:

I would personally save, but I'm pretty stubborn with keepers. Fabianski probably the pick of the bunch though

If you have Siggy already though then I wouldn’t make that transfer! Gylfi is a good pick

Assuming no injuries midweek, with this team, would you be looking to:

    A) Save
    B) Antonio > Sané/KDB/Eriksen/Alli

    Patrício
    Alonso, Doherty, Bellerín, Yedlin (hud)
    Anderson, Sterling, Son, Snodgrass
    Aubameyang, Lacazette

Hamer | Kamara (WHU), Antonio (ful), Digne (mci)

      B for Sane or Eriksen

      Then bench Yedlin

Probably Antonio to Sané - those City wings don't stay quiet for long.

Lacazette > Kane is also possible (exact change), but then Antonio continues to drain funds

Any idea what's going on with Lacazette? You seem to know more about Arsenal than most people here. He was my captain too.

Don't think there's anything going on. Emery just trying to be clever and claim credit for a masterstroke when we inevitably score during the second half 😀

I don't know of any specific issue, so I don't think it's worth acting on atm. We might see Mkhi and Iwobi help out the B team midweek, which would be good news for Laca

Yeah, I guess it makes sense. I thought the last two matches were enough to convince Emery that it's better with Aubameyang and Lacazette together, but I guess he always has to be seen to be doing something!

If on wildcard, would you prefer...
    -Kane or Aguero?
    -Jimenez or Chicharito?
    Thanks.

    WC draft:
    Fab, HAMER
    Robbo, Kola, Doherty, Wan-B, Bednarek
    Sterling, SALAH, Hazard, Fraser, Gunnarsson
    Kane, Wilson, KAMARA

    Or use Salah funds elsewhere?
Bednarek, Salah, Fraser, Kamara > TAA, Anderson, Spurs/Sane, Jimenez
