Doherty’s perfect week, Jimenez on bench duty and Rondon impresses

Our latest Scout Notes article rounds up all the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points and manager quotes from Sunday’s only Premier League fixture.

Wolverhampton Wanderers followed up their midweek win over Chelsea with a last-ditch victory over ten-man Newcastle United, with – who else – Matt Doherty popping up to hand his side another three points.

Newcastle United 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) | Diogo Jota (£5.9m), Matt Doherty (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Salomon Rondon (£5.8m) | Helder Costa (£4.8m), Diogo Jota

Wolves are one of only two Premier League clubs without a clean sheet in the last eight Gameweeks, but that would scarcely seem to matter with regards to the appeal of Matt Doherty (£5.0m).

While the days of a Wolves defensive double-up are – for now – a thing of the past and the ownerships of Ryan Bennett (£4.2m) and Rui Patricio (£4.6m) slowly ebb away, Doherty’s meteoric rise from unproven Premier League rookie to the second-best value-for-money FPL player of 2018/19 (averaging 14.80 points per million spent, narrowly behind Andrew Robertson’s 14.84) continues unabated.

The Irish wing-back has gained over 1.1 million new owners since Gameweek 1 yet it is somewhat surprising that Doherty still only features in fewer than one in five FPL squads – the abundance of thriving mid-price/premium defensive options this season plus Wolves’ recent woes at the back perhaps accounting for that.

Doherty left it late on Sunday to register his third attacking return in as many games, nodding in the visitors’ winner in stoppage time after what had been a frustrating afternoon for those Fantasy managers who owned the West Midlands’ clubs most popular FPL assets.

Wolves’ defenders lost their clean sheet with less than a quarter of the match played, while Raul Jimenez (£6.1m) – the third-most-bought player of Gameweek 16 – was named only as a substitute and emerged from the bench with half an hour remaining for a dreaded “one-pointer”.

Doherty began the match in fairly restrained manner but came into the match slowly but surely, going on to register more touches in the final third than any other player on show at St. James’ Park.

All three of his efforts on goal came in the final half an hour, meanwhile, with DeAndre Yedlin‘s (£4.5m) dismissal on 56 minutes perhaps a contributing factor in his increasing prominence in the Newcastle box.

Doherty had headed over from a corner and seen a curling shot palmed away by Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) before his last-gasp winner, which came after Diogo Jota‘s (£5.9m) shot had been parried into his path following a lightning-quick breakaway.

The last half an hour was a curious affair, as ten-man Newcastle took the game to their visitors and Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops seemed content to hit the Magpies on the counter-attack.

The Wolves boss acknowledged that his side had been perhaps fortunate to claim all three points:

I think we didn’t do the best of performances.

In the second half, everything changes with the red card of Newcastle, we control the game. And we had more possession.

Trying to find a way is not so easy to unblock a team with one man less. We were lucky in the end, we had chances before, but in the last minute to get a second ball from the goalkeeper. We were lucky, but happy of course.

Jimenez posed more of a threat in half an hour than the lively but wasteful Adama Traore (£5.3m) did in his hour-long showing and the Mexican striker came within inches of scoring his fifth goal of the season with a rasping effort that bounced down off the underside of Dubravka’s bar and out again.

While his owners will rue this one-point return, Jimenez remains an excellent option in the budget strikers’ bracket: in the last four Gameweeks, no FPL forward has recorded more attempts on goal or shots in the box than the Mexico international.

Sunday was a reminder to Santo that, as profligate as Jimenez can be regarding goal conversion, he remains by far Wolves’ biggest attacking threat in attack – and Traore is certainly no suitable deputy as a “number nine”.

Jota is slowly adapting to life in the Premier League, too, after his early-season struggles saw him drop £0.6m in price in FPL – no player has suffered more a price fall in 2018/19 to date.

It could well be that playing with a genuine left-footer behind him in Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) is proving beneficial, with the previous incumbent in the left wing-back slot, Jonny (£4.3m), perhaps having a detrimental effect on Jota given the Spanish defender’s tendency to drift inside onto his stronger foot and into the same dangerous areas that the midfielder ought to have been occupying.

Vinagre is offering more width and entering the opposition penalty box much less often than Jonny was, and as a result, Jota’s average number of touches in the area has increased.

Last season’s top scorer volleyed Wolves in front after being picked out by Helder Costa (£4.8m) and it was from Jota’s parried shot that Doherty headed into an empty net in the final minutes of the match.

Another budget asset to catch the eye in attack was Newcastle’s Salomon Rondon (£5.8m).

The Venezuelan striker was a real presence up front for the Magpies in the first half especially and was inches away from a goal of his own when his 22nd-minute free-kick crashed against Rui Patricio‘s (£4.6m) crossbar – Rondon’s owners at least getting a consolation assist when the on-loan West Brom forward picked up the loose ball and crossed for the much-improved Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) to nod in.

No other player had as many attempts on goal in this match and, in the last six Gameweeks, no FPL asset has registered as many attempts on goal or shots in the box than the Newcastle target-man.

Rafael Benitez had matched Wolves in a 3-4-3/3-4-2-1 for this match, with Yedlin and Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) deployed as wing-backs as they had been at Turf Moor two weeks ago.

Yedlin was moved to centre-back after half-time as Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) was withdrawn and it was from this alien position that the American committed the professional foul on Jota that led to his dismissal.

Benitez was incandescent at full-time regarding that sending off and an alleged elbow by Willy Boly (£4.6m) on Perez later in the match:

The ball was far away and he was close enough to see it was not a clear chance. He [Jota] was pulling him and he [Yedlin] was pulling him – but I don’t want to talk about that as it’s so obvious. I think the team was doing well enough to win the game – it’s very difficult in these situations.

So if you see the incidents today. It’s so obvious – the red card and the elbow in the face of Ayoze Perez. We need the VAR right now.

Newcastle United XI (3-4-2-1): Dubravka; Lascelles, Fernandez (Manquillo 45′), Clark; Yedlin, Diame, Ki, Ritchie; Atsu (Kenedy 88′), Perez; Rondon (Joselu 85′).

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-4-2-1): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Saiss (Jiminez 59′), Neves, Vinagre; Costa (Moutinho 75′), Jota; Traore (Gibbs-White 59′).

Good looking team! Save it. However, I feel the bench is a little weak for Christmas period. I'd look into that from next week.

Each week we look at the key player, team and talking point.

Which player should we discuss and why?
Which team should we discuss and why?
What should our talking point be and why?

Also keen to hear from anyone who removed Salah ahead of GWK 16.

Alonso and Chelsea defence in general ahead of their good schedule. Could Rüdiger/Azpi be better choices considering difference in price as it looks like Alonso is not bombing forward as much as in the start of the season. Some stats seem to back this up also.

      - Which player should we discuss and why?

Kane let many fpl managers down this gameweek (not me) but keep the faith, home fixture to burnley next and it doesn't get much better. For me, he is the prime captaincy choice this week

      - Which team should we discuss and why?

West Ham's good run of fixture continues (key players - fanderson, snodgrass, chicarito), Bournemouth the new whipping boys, Huddersfield's defensive resolve - time to invest in their cut-price defensive assets?

What should our talking point be and why?

      - KEEP SALAH, BIN SALAH, HOLD SALAH (I, myself, have already moved him on and thank him for his captaincy haul this gameweek)

Can you think of Doherty and Alonso in the same breath?
Alonso is 7mil mid getting defensive points.
Doherty is a 7mil mid getting the same for 5mil.

There is too much Doherty hype here. His underlying stats were poor before last three and lack of clean sheets will be a problem for him. He will not be able keep his conversion rate with some difficult fixtures coming soon. The train has left and now is not time to get him. Gw23 may be a different story. Alonso will have better fixtures and will be attacking again against weaker opponents. Robertson and TAA cannot be forgotten either.

Key player(s). I think an opportunity to discuss what to do about Salah after so many sold (I have neither) makes sense.
Team. Chelsea. Alonso and Hazard have been discussed as saleable in the last few weeks - but should we hold or re-buy for the good fixtures?
The other option is Bournemouth - should we read much into their heavy defeat/injuries?
Talking point. Building up our benches/squads. Which are the best all-weather squad-strengthening moves? Camarasa (4.6 with pens), Snodgrass (5.3 with recent returns) are examples.

Is it really worth buying the ‘second best’ options or is it just a false economy and the cream will always rise to the top?

      Luiz instead of Alonso
      Mane instead of Salah
      Richa instead of Siggy
      Son instead of Erik/Alli
      William instead of Hazard
      Boly instead of Doherty

Robertson/TAA When there is a situation as good as this, I would say have both but never sacrifice fantasy gold.
Salah/Mane a different kettle of fish due to tying up 23% of your budget on 2 players.
Richa/Siggy is a difficult one due price being close. One cannot double up on Everton like Pool and Citeh.

That reads like Joe pronounced it. The "h" is like a harsh " uch" . This is difficult for non locals. That's why I suggest they just say "dock" , it's close enough if said fast.

Very true. Parts of the South have problems pronoucing the harsh "uch" too. So he probably also says it like da minion. It's not the original way though

To be honest I'd say it's the Catholic pronunciation. I don't know any Doherty and I know lots that would put a dock in it.dock s would be Ulster Scots who would be predominantly protestants.

Im not sure. I'm Catholic and use the "uch" (closest to dock derivitive) it's probably a locational thing. Up in Co. Antrim coast most say it like that and that's predominantly Catholic

You could easily argue the "uch" is as close to "h" as it is to "k", or closer. Depends which parameters you prioritise, whether through objective measurements or subjective assessment based on your own personal language/dialect experience.

Or is the etymology of Doherty somehow related to docks? I'm not quite sure what you mean by "dock derivative". I'm no expert as I'm a softy Englishman, but I'm a Linguistics student, so it interests me too. 🙂

I agree that "it's probably a locational thing". Location is a factor in 100% of dialectal differences around the world, and usually the most significant one. You can trace a gradual chain of phonetic changes across Europe, for example, East to West, with (little or) no demarkation between country boundaries. Similar to changes you could see in attitudes and culture etc.

This is false. Doherty is pronounced as it is written, ie. without an imaginary C all over Ireland. You English come along and bastardise all "foreign" names because you can't be bothered to realise that the world doesn't revolve around Blighty. Listening to those snooker commentators say Ken Dockerty, morons. Then you get clowns like this guy peddling nonsense. It's fuc@ing Doherty. Not that complex, country of ignoramuses.

Is Diogo Jota viable, at 5.9m? Are Southampton budget options (3.8m Bednarek, 4.0m Valery), who started this GW, viable bench fodder?
Are City assets even considered essential over the festive period? Their squad depth is unreal, could field different XIs every week with no problem. In that context, premium options like Sterling are difficult to justify, isn't it?
Bench strength should be a key discussion. Now, more than ever, the need for a playing bench could be key at this point in the season.

To discuss - Hazard. Hasn't scored for ages but still over 100 points with great fixtures coming up. Is he a better option than Sterling. Or we could ask Chelsea fans if they prefer Hazard over Sterling.

Talking point is luck with Lacazette's goal ruled out which was an awful decision, while Salah's goal stood.

Bit different but now seems an appropriate time to discuss mental stength. This season more than any I can remember has huge rank swings coz if you own Salah then you don't own at least one of Kane/Sterling/Hazard/Aguero. All capable of rank defining hauls. So how do you handle sensational/woeful gameweeks?

I took Salah out on WC, first time I've been without him in FPL since he signed for Pool. Saturday was a tough watch since neither Salah or Pool had looked like exploding for a while now, but I'd earmarked GW16 as the week for changes for a while & the benching vs Burnley following an insipid home derby showing made my decision for me. Confident Sterling, Kane & Auba will be more consistently explosive to justify the change in the medium term.

I'd like to see the scouts take a look at Chicharito. Stong set of fpl returns over the last 3 games, AND backed up by the stats. With continued good fixtures, Jiminez benched, Arnie and Wilson injured, and Rondon's fixtures about to turn for the worse, is he now the 3rd striker of choice? Or are there downsides we should be aware of?

Player - Rondon is making waves. With an excellent next few fixtures is he now the perfect budget option?

Team - Have Bournemouth shown that they are unlikely to score and conceed lots against the big teams?

Talking point- The scouts opinion on which two out of the three of Kane, Aubameyang and Salah we should own.

Player's got to be Salah. Think Mark nailed it in the breakfast club. Do we still got rid if he goes mad? He may not be captaincy material over the next 5.

I know this is just guesswork, but it seems very logical that Klopp will rotate heavily in the Newcastle game on Dec 26th. Klopp likes to rotate many players at once, not just the odd player here and there. On the other hand, it 's the first time we've seen Salah's confidence at spring 2018 beast-mode level.

      1) alli vs. son vs. erik- rashford
      2) huds - defensive assets & man utd - great fixtures after this week- rashford, dalot, some other good players to look for?
      3) how agresive should we be with taking hits, considering plenty rotation and injuries and 1-2 subs coming off the bench each week

Lacazette the player. Subbed at HT. admit the mistake and damage limitation ie downgrade and use cash to upgrade midfield or strap down the knee for next two? Caveat being there is a NL derby next midweek in the Cup, therefore we may not get a benefit against the lesser sides due to the planning and intensity of this game?

Auba - is he worth the money or do we go with Hazard?
Bournemouth - time to get rid of Wilson and Fraser?
Bargain buys - Huddersfield, Cardiff, Fulham and Watford all have decent fixtures coming up. Are there any players to pick up from these teams?

How many big hitters (£9.5+) can we own? and bearing that in mind, who do we prioritise? (Salah, Kane, Auba, Sterling, Hazard, Sane, Laca etc.)

FYI - I currently hold Salah, Kane, Laca and Sane and can't see an easy way in which one could have more than 4..

I’d like to hear you talk about West Ham. I think it’s possible that most teams will have 2-3 players from them, and the decision as to which ones looks more and more interesting. Fabianski was probably most well-owned and is now the most difficult to move on, but in addition Anderson, Chicharito, Snodgrass, and Balbuena/Diop all look viable for different reasons.

Talking point is probably rotation and how best to set up to protect against the unpredictable. Do you suggest reacting to benching of players like Kane or Salah last week, or do you advocate sticking to your guns as long as players remain fit? And do you fight every fire immediately, or do you try to bank transfers?

Player: Kamara is he the best cheap forward to cover rotation over xmas?
Team: West Ham form and fixtures, which options are best?
Talking point: Is double Liverpool defense a good idea? Best defense in europe only 6 goals against in 16 matches. Is big Virgil being over looked? Nailed on 90 mins every game which will be useful of the busy xmas period with rotation of other players.

What are the best strategies to arrest a slide in fpl ?

Ive dropped from just outside the top 10k to close to 100k which isnt that bad as its a long season and not owning salah this week was obviously a major reason, but in general if ur making the correct moves and being generally sensible and avoiding tilt, but the slide continues what is the best way to get out of the rut ?

Normally being patient and waiting for news and not taking hits is the best way but when that isnt working and the slide just goes on how do you snap ur team out of it ?

Hey Jonty, I removed Salah for GW16.........unfortunately, to my despair, I took a -8 to take out Salah (42), Robertson (11) & Arnie (0), and bring in Sterling (2), Mina (0) & Auba (10) - therefore 49 points deficit 🙁 ...gone from 193k to 317K OR, only managed to scrape 40pts overall due to Digne FK last minute, otherwise it would have been more disastrous. My Team ID - 64455 (Keita For The Masses). Surely this up there with the week's biggest ROUGHS?

What is your worst ever GW Rank?

I didn't know 5.8m GW rank was even possible until today when Yedlin (-3) came off my bench to complete a horror week of 24 points.
Kane, TAA and Eriksen don't start, Laca off at half-time, Zaha booked and suspended, double WH defence, Yedlin off the bench! The only smooth were Doherty & Hazard.
      Dropped from 20k to 96k.

Pre-game I was even optimistic about the week after taking a -4 for Arnie & Alono to Laca & Balbuena!

Crap team of the week is below - read it and weep/laugh!
      Fabs
      Balbuena, Doherty, TAA (Yedlin)
      Sterling, Eriksen, Hazard, Brooks
      La(c)a, Kane, Zaha

      Hi Joe,

Just submitted a community article and emailed the backing spreadsheet about some Man City midfield analysis I did in case helpful for the Scoutcast.

Player: Salah (if you got his hat trick, is it time to sell and spread the money around and then get him back after Man City in January... or is he back to his old ways and we'd be silly to part with him?)

Team: Man City (Chelsea seems like just a blip and they can score against nearly anyone... how many should we get from their midfield)

Talking Point: Price Rises (Price hikes are coming fast a furious for popular players... trying to be patient, plan a few moves ahead and not take hits... but when is enough enough? Or when / how much are price rises "worth" when thinking about taking hits or transfering before midweek CL fixtures?)

      Thanks!

No, Spurs agreed a deal when Son played in the Asian games (do avoid the military service) with South Korea, which got him out of the tournament in January, and a couple of friendly games also I believe.

With so many big names starting on the bench in the past 2 GWs, are you re-assessing how you will go into the rest of December?

Are you looking to spread your budget across your front 8, or will you stick with a cheaper 5th option? Are any of the cheap 5th mids good enough, or are you expecting less rotation going forward? I've seen people speculate that the money in the premier league means stronger benches, and therefore more rotation - do you agree?

How do you think we should be adjusting our strategies to deal with future December rotation?

      Deeper bench resources.....So effectively I'm playing 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 -

Def - TAA, Robertson then generally play 1 or 2 from Doherty / Diop / AWB
Mid - Sterling, Sane, Anderson then generally play 1 from Fraser/Brooks
      Att - Kane, Auba, Jimenez

Should get 11 out any week with that squad

Strong bench innit. Only way. Literally anyone can be rotated as we have seen with Kane.

This part of the season is a lottery and it's a case of muddling through with rank as intact as possible, with the aim of consolidating and building. If you take too many hits to second guess the starters you will just end up with a points defecit or a team which is not very well-suited to the comparatively stable January period.

Just have to pick your key players (Kane, Aubameyang and Sterling for me) and hope that across the next 5-6 games they do as well or better than other big players like Salah.

Admittedly i'm having a shocking start with these 3 benched or not owned over last 2 GWs and dropped from ~150k -> 475k undoing one of my better starts to the season. But this bad luck has partly been from trying to chase points with so much rotation. A playing bench is important, but patience over the next several games is also going to be key.

A key defining point for this week was whether you owned Salah, midweek it was Kane. Next week it might be neither of them. Hard to resist changes with games coming thick and fast, but trying to guess whose not playing is a way to madness - i'd have thought Salah rested / quiet game pre champions league for example!

So here's hoping for a better next few weeks to push back towards the top 100k!

Just played my WC. Even if I still had it, predicting rotation is a minefield. As long as you have a playing bench, you should be able to field 11 every week.

As it stands, I have 5 strong mids and Kamara as a cheap back-up up top. Defence is on the weak side, but that was a risk I decided would be worth taking.

Playing bench is a must - ideally have a decent player as 1st sub.
Can't fight rotation. You have to be wary of a team like Man City - just too big a squad. It's not like bringing in Mahrez for Sane or Sterling weakens City much. You've got 10 international midfielders at City chasing 5 spots. I think Sterling has the most minutes of the City big hitters and that's about 75% of the total minutes played. They've been rotating a lot even before Xmas period begins

Don't try and 2nd guess managers. e.g. Lacazette. His recent minutes are poor yet people still bring him in as theorizing Auba must get a break soon. He could start next GW and score but no guarantee he'll be starting the following GW.

Try and pick players that have normally got starts and good minutes already over the whole season.
Maybe note that it is the top 6 sides that are doing most of the rotation. I see Ronka's got only 5 players from the big 6.

Its not really a reassessment but I'll be continuing with spreading of budget across the front 8. I think you only really need a couple of captaincy options over 11m, more than this and it gets tough for them to justify their value. Moreover, theres plenty of mid price options performing well with good fixtures: Son, Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Anderson, Martial, Fraser etc in Midfield, and Jiminez, Chicharito, Wilson, Rondon, Mitrovic etc in attack.

I'm actually looking at a shift to 3-5-2 over the next week or 2 with a decent third striker as an option to play, something like:

      Sterling, Sane, Son, Anderson, Richarlison
      Aubemayang, Chicharito, Rondon/Ings

I have a bench of AWB 4m, Camarasa 4.5m, Doherty 4.4m (who plays the majority of games anyway). That is the perfect set-up for the bench and only 0.4m over the cheapest possible options (from the beginning of the season).

      1. MMN

This is sensible. Also what people are failing to see is that Kane and Salah being benched are not examples of why we need strong subs - as they both came on for a cameo. Even in GW15 where 5/6 of my players didn't start I still didn't get my 3rd sub (Kamara 8 pointer) coming in due to cameos. And can't see many weeks with more than 5 of our players not starting.

I think we have to look at it as a 12 man squad, first sub is key and then second sub should be someone you're willing to play/have come on from time to time. 3rd sub rarely, rarely ever comes into play even when there is absolute carnage (assuming you pick your first 11 sensibly).

In a way, it's the perfect time to own rotation risk players like Lacazette and Aubameyang. If the majority of desirable players will see reduced minutes and/or rotation anyway, Lacazette and Aubameyang are no longer liabilities by comparison 😀

      I own Lacazette and Aubameyang.

    1FT, 1.2 IDb

I have few issues here. Wilson and Martial are injured but expect to be fit for next game.
So if no other problems, what would be my next move:

    a) Haz to Sterling
    b) Siggy to Anderson
    c) Martial to Anderson
    d) Patricio to Fabianski
    e) something else?

Yep, he could definitely get some attacking returns during that period. Ditched Alonso for Kolasinac this GW to get Arsenal attacker in and slightly regretting that decision ahead of Chelsea schedule :/ although for the last few weeks it has looked like Sarri wants him to be more cautious getting forward but who knows if that will change against teams they play next. Probably still getting Rüdiger in over Alonso at some point.

for those that are asking, Son Heung-min WILL BE playing in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, taking place from 5 January to 1 February 2019.

Both are good options in line with their price. Anderson is more nailed, shoots more and will obviously be a higher points scorer overall. Snoddy is a good squad option, set pieces, in form.

I have a 433 set up at the moment - so Snoddy not quite up to that. Anderson the best fit.

He's been the beneficiary of playing at wingback. Sokratis is suspended, Mustafi is injured and I think Koscielny hasn't featured yet. Not sure they can field 3 CB's this week - so Kolasinac may be playing deeper than he has been.
