Rashford turns heads as FPL managers search for cheap strikers

The budget options of both Manchester United and Cardiff City may have crept onto the radars of many Fantasy Premier League managers after Gameweek 16.

In this latest Scout Notes article we’ve run the rule over the key players from Saturday’s matches at Old Trafford and the Cardiff City Stadium.

Manchester United 4-1 Fulham

Goals: Ashley Young (£5.7m), Juan Mata (£6.2m), Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m), Marcus Rashford (£6.8m) | Aboubakar Kamara (£4.3m)

Assists: Rashford, Young, Mata

Red card: Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.4m)

There was a wealth of budget options making a name for themselves at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Young (12), Juan Mata (13) and Marcus Rashford (14) were the big points scorers for Manchester United in this game, which was over as a contest by half-time. Meanwhile Aboubakar Kamara scored from the spot having been fouled by Ander Herrera (£5.0m) to make it two goals in his last two appearances. However, while United impressed going forward, it’s just two clean sheets in sixteen games now for David De Gea (£5.7m) and co.

As per usual, there were personnel problems for Jose Mourinho, who had to do without the services of Eric Bailly (£6.0m), Victor Lindelof (£4.8m), Anthony Martial (£7.5m) and Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m) because of injury. Things got worse for the United boss when Luke Shaw (£5.0m) suffered a setback in the warm-up and Chris Smalling (£5.7m) hobbled off before the sixty-minute mark to be replaced by Marcos Rojo (£4.9m). Paul Pogba (£7.8m) was an unused substitute.

Young opened the scoring with a fine solo effort, his first goal in over a year. It’s unlikely to result in managers rushing to bring him in given his price and United’s inability to shut teams out, though. Young’s fellow full back, Diogo Dalot (£5.3m) was very impressive, touching the ball on thirty-four occasions in the final third and creating two big chances in his second consecutive start. One to watch.

Mourinho on Dalot in his post-match press conference:

“I’m not a scout, I have no chance to do that. I can do it with Dalot because he is Portuguese. I can control that market pretty well. He’s a player with fantastic potential.” – Jose Mourinho

In the absence of Martial and Sanchez, Rashford and Mata were the stellar performers. Mourinho singled the Spaniard out for praise after the game:

“Juan is Juan. The quality, the brain, they are always there. An honest man, a club man. When he plays, he plays for the team. When he doesn’t play, he still fights for the team. He’s one of these guys that we all respect and we all know that Juan is Juan. That is the best way to describe him.” – Jose Mourinho

Mangers who are still searching for a Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) replacement should consider Rashford after this performance. He could have had an even bigger points haul, registering six goal attempts, four of them on target. Aside from Liverpool (away) in Gameweek 17 and Spurs (away) in Gameweek 22, United have as good a fixture run as any side right up to February. If he can show some consistency, he could prove to be great value this season.

Lukaku’s tap-in was his first competitive goal at Old Trafford since March which tells you all you need to know about him as an FPL option. He’s not worth the £10.7m outlay at present but could we see a revival from the Belgian over the Christmas period?

After the game, Mourinho was asked if he would rest players against Valencia on Wednesday:

“Yeah, we need too. We go to Valencia, there are people that need to rest, there are people that need to play. It’s a question of trust, a question of justice too, so if I say Romelu Lukaku plays, obviously he deserves to play. If I say a kid that is working every day like a tiger and is not playing much like Andreas Pereira is going to have a start, I’m going to make changes in the team, because we managed to qualify.”

After four consecutive starts, Calum Chambers (£4.2m) missed out for Fulham due to injury. FPL managers have been eyeing him up as a potential out-of-position budget defender having seen him play in midfield for Fulham in recent weeks. When asked about the reason for his absence, Ranieri had the following to say:

“Chambers suffered a little problem and was in London. He didn’t travel with us. I hope he will be ready to be back next week.” – Claudio Ranieri

With the game as good as over at half time, Ranieri reacted by making a double substitution replacing Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.7m) and Tom Cairney (£4.8m) with Kamara and Luciano Vietto (£5.5m).

The early substitution may have been a blessing in disguise for Mitrovic owners given the fact that he’s on four yellow cards. The Serbian will be a popular transfer in this week with West Ham (home), Newcastle (away), Wolves (home) and Huddersfield (home) his next four opponents. The four yellows will put off some of the potential buyers but those managers who put their faith in him to behave himself on the pitch could be rewarded over the coming weeks.

The red card for Zambo Anguissa seemed a bit harsh. He received a second yellow in a tangle with Rashford. Watching the replay, it looks as though he did very little wrong with Rashford possibly the player who should have been booked for wrestling the Fulham man to the ground.

Ranieri when asked about the decision:

“I want to speak about all the game, not just about the decision of the referee. Referees can mistakes, managers can mistakes and players can make mistakes. That’s football. I like to see the first half was only Manchester United. They played so well with their powerful qualities. Everything. We didn’t realise what happened. It was a warm up for us. Second half was much better with desire and to try and do our best. We scored a goal and that moment there was a fall, but I didn’t see it on pitch. I watched after on video. My player touched the ball only and the referee gave the second yellow card. At that time it changed the match because the first minute of the second half was much better for us. We showed what we need to do if we want to stay in the Premier League. I told my players the first half is to be relegated, the second half we can survive. It’s very clear our match today. We have to react, think about it and we have to have desire to be in the Premier League next season as nobody gives a gift.”

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Dalot, Jones, Smalling (Rojo 59’), Young; Matic, Herrera; Rashford (McTominay 84’), Mata, Lingard (Fred 73’); Lukaku.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Rico; Odoi, Ream, Mawson, Bryan; Seri, Zambo Anguissa; Schürrle (Cisse 73’), Cairney (Vietto 46’), Sessegnon; Mitrovic (Kamara 46’).

Cardiff City 1–0 Southampton

Goal: Callum Paterson (£5.3m)

Assist: None

Cardiff picked up their third home win on the bounce thanks to Callum Paterson’s fourth goal of the season, but it was defeat for Ralph Hasenhuttl in his first game in charge of Southampton. The Bluebirds’ make-shift striker capitalised on a dreadful attempted back pass by centre back Jannik Vestergaard (£4.6m) to score what proved to be the winner.

It was Cardiff’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 3 which saw defender Sol Bamba (£4.5m) and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge (£4.5m) pick up bonus points. Bamba’s centre-back partner Sean Morrison (£4.7m) continues to show great potential. He should have added a goal to his clean sheet, missing a free header from close range. He registered ten touches in Southampton’s box which highlights his threat from set pieces.

Josh Murphy (£4.8m) came back into the Cardiff starting XI, with Warnock less concerned about his defensive shortcomings against the Saints, while Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£4.8m) made his first start since Gameweek 1. They flanked Paterson in a 4-3-3 formation. Murphy put in an impressive display despite failing to return fantasy points. His pace and trickery caused the Southampton defence problems throughout but his decision-making in the final third let him down.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock explained the reasons for his team selection post-match:

“I went for Mendez-Laing and Murphy today because I thought we could get in behind in areas, where we could utilise Paterson and we did. They replaced their right-back [Yan Valery] at half-time because of Murphy’s threat, so I thought I made a good decision in playing them.” – Neil Warnock

Paterson has been ignored by many this season due to the fear that he’ll lose his place when the strikers are fit but Warnock seems to have complete faith in him to lead the line. He registered four shots in the box against the Saints. He’s owned by just 1.4% of managers.

“I don’t honestly know what we’d do without Callum Paterson, to be honest. You’ve only got to look at the stats to see the amount of ground Callum covers and he’s just a tremendous lad because he’ll play anywhere and do anything for me. In the old-fashioned days, I used to say that he’d run through a brick wall for me. But, if I asked Callum he probably would.” – Neil Warnock

Victor Camarasa (£4.6m) was excellent again, creating four chances for his team mates. He’s a great option for the fifth midfield spot in our teams with set piece responsibility as well as Warnock saying last week that the Spaniard will take the next penalty Cardiff are awarded.

Hasenhuttl was without three key players due to injury for his first game in charge, full backs Ryan Bertrand (£4.8m) and Cedric Soares (£4.4m) and striker Danny Ings (£5.4m).

Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) played ninety minutes. If he can nail down a place in the starting XI under the new manager, he will be a budget-friendly enabler who can be used to fund transfers elsewhere in our teams. It’s hard to see too many clean sheets for him in the short term though with Arsenal (home), Manchester City (home) and Chelsea (away) in the next five games.

Southampton did play some good football (they had 63% possession) particularly in the final third with Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) both having strong penalty shouts turned down.

After the game, Hasenhuttl rued the defensive mistakes which cost his side the game:

“It is very hard to accept that we didn’t take a point but with these mistakes you don’t deserve it. We had two good days of training, two hard days, but maybe it’s not enough at the moment. I always said either we win or we learn and today we learned.” – Ralph Hasenhuttle

Cardiff City XI (4-1-4-1): Etheridge; Ecuele Manga, Morrison, Bamba, Bennett; Mendez-Laing (Hoilett 67’), Gunnarsson, Arter (Ralls 90’), Murphy (Harris 85’); Camarasa; Paterson.

Southampton XI (4-3-3): McCarthy; Valery (Stephens 46’), Bednarek, Vestergaard, Targett; Højbjerg, Oriol Romeu (Ward Prowse 81’); Redmond, Lemina, Armstrong; Austin (Gabbiadini 75’).

I'm aware of how stupid this sounds but it's the one part of the game that confuses me - I am 0.1 off the transfers I want to make this week, is there any way further price increases can make this possible for me?

Arnie dropping, Salah probably not double rising, so you'll need Richarlison to rise before Kane... seems unlikely unless he goes bonkers tonight

Is it racism regarding Sterling and the media or is it that he's one of the best players? I thought it was racism at first, enough big players who are black have had bad headlines about them, Sterling, Pogba, Adebayor. But then i thought, is it just that they are all big players. Players like Ozil and Arshavin were constantly labelled lazy, even Englands Golden boy Rooney was dragged in the papers.

I think there is definitely a case where not enough of the journalists understand black culture, but i don't think it's intended racism (at least i hope it's not!) I think it is just because he is one of the biggest players in the world.

        It's racism.

Agree that best will always try to be dragged down by some but with Sterling it is off the scale and beyond coincidental.

Carragher and Neville nailed it there, hopefully it wakes even more people up.

        The media exacerbates it.

This. The media know their audience. It's not racism in and of itself, so much, as it is racism because they want to appease racists by demonising their enemies.

While the racist abuse he has gotten from fans is disgraceful, his race has nothing to do with the way the media treats him. The media single out players that they can get a rise out of, and players that tend not to play at their best in big games.

Considering Sterling's *ahem* sexual history, difficult upbringing including some bad behaviour plus the fact that he went from Liverpool to City in a move a lot of Pool fans still resent (and therefore take a certain level of pleasure from him being singled out), it's really no wonder he's been singled out. Not saying it's right, but that's how it is.

I very much agree, except that I don't think the media are as naive as you're making them out to be. They know they could be called out for racism and cause a stir, and this is exactly why they revel in controversy like this. Sell, sell sell.

As an old white bloke I am ashamed to say that racism still exists in some areas and sections of our society. It's better than it used to be but there is still plenty of room for improvement.

This comment could receive some backlash, but I think it's endemic in the "British" identity of a large portion of lower/working-class England. The section of the public who are most hard done by in out society but also happen to be white, and feel an affinity with the British Empire, when they would have felt better about their position in society (feeling superior to other countires, cultures and ethnicities).

I just cringe at the sheer amount of them-vs-us style memes with essentially no logical or meaningful point to make on my facebook timeline from people who meet that profile, like they feel so underpowered in society they have to vent, essentially silently, by posting this garbage which is legitimised because someone else has written it down.

People you have a voice! Use it to blame the b*stard polititians and policies rather than spreading division in within your own ranks! 😀

The most racist people around are the chelsea posh boys. You can see them chatting to sterling on the sideline a couple days ago. That is just genuine hate for another race. The working classes have been left behind by globalisation and have been pedalled the narrative by the racist elite that they’re jobs are being taken. What is really taking their jobs is the capitalist drive for profit and a lack of care for their welfare. This is their reason for racism, the elites have no excuse but they are guilty in inciting it.

I rather think that this is not an entirely balanced view . " The Chelsea posh boys" is a rather misguided generalisation . I have experienced racism far worse than this at other grounds . How many grounds have you been across how wide a geographical location ?

My point is that the working class have a hatred to take out on ethnic minorities because of this establishment narrative. Due to this reason they are the ones made out to be hateful but the only way they feel that way is because of the system that has been set up to let them down by the rich elites who have the real racist imperialist complex

Agreed. To simplify it's the racist 1% playing with the poor, who are susceptable to feelings of animosity towards perceived threats. Racism is very effective in distracting from the real issues, dividing the people and maintaining thestatus quote. I'm not FB friends with any Chelsea posh boys, though

Although tbf, I don't think the ultra rich are necessarily racist. Most of them probably couldn't give a damn, and would have no issue mixing with rich folk of any ethnicity, and even any culture.

Well they are somewhat exceptional too. They are leaders, and as such necessarily have to deal with the simplification of complex issues in order to appease the masses. Their lives are dominated by the media. And in the current government's case, they have a following which includes (but of course is not entirely comprised of) people who are more susceptible to racist attitudes than the average citizen. The current government (and many other governments) are complicit in the media's divisive strategies because they are the conquerers.

Tbf it looks like we basically agree almost entirely in every way 😀 When I said the elite aren't "necessarily racist", I meant individually speaking, not 100% of them are racist. Inciting racism doesn't necessitate that you are racist. You can simply use it as a strategy, or be complicit in a system that is racist. But yeah, of course many elites are racist too. It's not really the most important part of the discussion. I was just saying it as an aside tbh

And the current government were not voted in by these who must not be named, the current government have adopted policies these people have been told to want by our media. Nothing inherently racist about working class attitudes as you are suggesting

Most rich people, and especially ultra elites, tend stay out of the public gaze. Politicians are scrutinised more closely than Emma Watson's knickers. So they are an exceptional subset of the rich. That's what I mean by exceptional.

Howis the media successful in inciting racism if the public aren't remotely susceptible to it? As John Barnes says in the interview below, we are influenced by the media, which I think is your point too. All I'm saying is that some people are clearly more susceptible than others. History shows that disenfranchised masses are prone to these tactics. And who is more disenfranchised than the disenfranchised? 😀

Politicians, like the media, are a reflection of us, as we are a reflection of them. However, the ultra elites typically do not participate in society (who knows if most those myseterious people are racist or not?) That's all I'm saying 🙂

Sure, I agree with most of that 🙂 Perhaps for clarity's sake, I should retract my statement by excluding the "upper class". I had that debate somewhat above.

But I think most agree that it's a power play between the very rich and the poor. Those who have had access to a better/higher education, and a higher quality of life, than the poor/working-class tend to escape tribalistic attitudes and behaviours (ie they are less susceptible to divisive, hate-spewing media).

Who reads the Daily Mail and The Sun? Mostly working-class, right? Who owns it? The super rich.

Which groups are prone to participating in the burning of mosques? Who voted for Brexit for immigration reasons (not *necessarily* racist, but at the same time certainly not clean of racism)?

We're all victims of our environment, and that environment is fostered by the those in power (higher even than the upper class, though they are usually complicit). But the idea that the lower classes harbour more racist views and behaviours than classes immediately above them (because they are targetted by the super rich to be divided in this way) is hardly contentious to my mind, and needn't be an issue that causes a rift in the discussion. The idea is either right or wrong. In fact, according to your reply, it seems you agree with it tbh.

I'm saying the same as you: "the upper class [..] just manipulate their views onto the vulnerable and downtrodden". Therefore the vulnerable and downtroden are more racist than those who are not vulnerable and downtrodden. I think the difference is that you claim that all rich people are racist perpetrators, whereas I would say it's mostly the super uber elite who are in power, and that they don't necesserily have to be racist nowadays to get the job done. They simply use the media to disseminate harmful attitudes to the people. Whether they tend to be racist personally or not doesn't really matter, though it would be interesting to know. I would certainly concede that most are basically morally corrupt, and that their corruption is not predudiced. Haha

Sorry for any offence cause to either you or Xabialonso

Firstly, as a liverpool fan - I was appalled by it. Second for those who say 'famous/top' players get it - is to miss what was said contrasting the exact same scenario between two rich young footballers buying their mum a house - when one was black and the other was white.
As to the idea 'poor people are racist' 'middle class are not' - that's hilarious - really. You tell that to the many people of all races who mix along in multicultural areas, grow up with each other, play with each other, fight and love with each other - compare that to middle class 'white flight' and 'jobs for the boys' and tell me who really are the racists. Generic class prejudice is almost as offensive as racism.

Maybe I'm wrong, and that's okay 🙂 However, racism as a phenomenon can be explained. My suggestion that economic factors might have some explanatory power should not offend you. I hate this "call out" culture, shaming people for having an opinion. Can we not just talk?

Certainly, intercultural playing and loving is going reduce the prevalence of racism. I agree with that too, and perhaps that is more common in cities. Outside of the cities, however, there exists a large portion of the country who don't mix in this way. I remember meeting a 20 year old Welsh girl at university years ago who said she's never met a black person.

It's not black and white. There are multiple factors. If my offensive idea is not true of the cities, then maybe it's true of smaller cities, towns and rural areas? It's certainly the feeling I get from my hometown, from my facebook which includes people from my hometown, and from time spent abroad.

E.g. In the Netherlands, there is controversy every year around Chritmas concerning "Black Pete". I recently saw a video of protesters being bullied by a group of balding men, shouting racist abuse and performing a n*zi salute.

This kind of thing is more likely to occur where there is less mix of ethnicities, and of course where there is segregation ("cities" in the Netherlands seemed very segregated to me, despite how proud they are of their liberalism). Would you not agree? Or is that prejudiced too?

Let's not pull any punches or be in any doubt. The Daily Mail is a deliberate and overt vehicle for far-right propaganda.

Its aim is to divide society and then drive the pieces as far apart from each other as possible. The clear racism it churns out, as well as sexism and other messages of hate and fear, is undeniable and horrific.

Anyone who reads it, for any reason, is complicit. We have a responsibility to avoid it at the very least, and undermine it wherever possible.

I don’t agree that it is racism. How many black players have there been in this country and how many of them could you say have been given a rough time in the press any more than other footballers? As a profession footballers get in the press a lot because it is our national sport and a lot of them behave like overpaid undereducated idiots.

I do agree that the press may be targeting him more than most by why does it automatically have to be racism?

Take the examples of the gun tattoo just before a world cup at a time when gun crime has been rife and the circumstances in which he moved to man city. Maybe the press target him more just because he is a bit of a nob?

Just want to clarify as most of the replies to this HT have raised good points and obviously there is a discussion to be had around the treatment of Sterling and racism in general, (not sure if this is the right forum for it but not everything has to be about FPL) but it's framed in an unsavoury way here. "Is it as plain as black and white?" - yes it obviously is, admittedly it varies but unsurprisingly a lot of the stuff in the right-leaning tabloids is pretty overtly racist, "is it really racism" isn't the question to be asking here

There's a difference between reporting of the irresponsible behaviour of some players and the way Sterling is repeatedly and often falsely targeted and the way it is framed. As mentioned elsewhere, the questionable choices made by other players (e.g. Özil's support of Erdogan, Arshavin's backwards traditionalist views of women drivers, even Sterling's gun tattoo which may have been in bad taste but was a piece of art with an anti-gun sentiment behind it) go relatively unreported in favour of "laziness" stereotypes.

Maybe the best way to play a WC is to look at the best team available rather than trying to improve the current one ie I shouldn't worry about losing Salah or hazard as long as my new squad is the best it can be....Not sure that makes sense 🙂

Everyone should be loading up on United assets with the cup now in play, I always lose to a dead team full of their players who have done nothing all season then bag a hattrick against me

      DEULOFAIL

Responded to you on the previous page, Lacazette has scored against more of the top clubs than Auba this season. So what point were you trying to make?

The point that you were calling out David for "making up stories", in a case where I don't think anything was really made up, despite you completely making up a story in the past yourself (perhaps by accident?). Don't worry about it, I now know you're not going to admit to being wrong, so I'll move on. 😉

West Ham do have by far the best fixtures but Chico will be rotated with Pérez and Carroll? Chico also fairly injury prone like Arnie isn’t he?

Lossi or Leno as Patricio replacement? Arsenal have many defensive injuries, but thought of a top 6 GK at 4.8 still appeals.

      What are Brooks owners doing?

I brought him in for Fraser on WC as a bench player but he's becoming an issue.

Looking at Schurrle or Snodgrass as an upgrade to rotate with Jimenez.
