Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for Gameweek 17

Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur options are likely to be the first port of call for the captaincy in Gameweek 17.

Both sides have favourable home fixtures to look forward to, with the defending champions hosting an Everton side with just one clean sheet on the road this season.

Predicting the Pep Guardiola roulette will as ever complicate matters with Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) and Leroy Sané (£9.5m) perhaps the most likely to start.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), who has three goals and two assists in his last five starts, stands an outside chance of inclusion, while a return to full fitness of Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) would make him a strong candidate too.

No player has had more shots in the box in home matches this season than the Argentinian striker.

Spurs options are sure to be considered this week as they host a Burnley side that has been defensively troubled this season.

The Clarets remain bottom of the league for goal attempts and shots in the box allowed meaning that Harry Kane (£12.5m) will have plenty of opportunities to score at Wembley.

With his Gameweek 16 rest out of the way, the talismanic striker should be in line to start against Burnley, although Fantasy managers were fairly assured he would feature from the beginning at Leicester.

In his place at the King Power Stadium was Son Heung-min (£8.5m), whose 14-point haul took his average since Gameweek 13 to 8.75 points per game.

Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) may also get a look in if he looks as if he will return to the starting line-up. The injury problems for Kieran Trippier continue to play into the Danish international’s hands as he looks to have reclaimed set-piece responsibilities.

It will be interesting to see if Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.0m) hat-trick against Bournemouth will influence his backing this week. Liverpool host Manchester United, who typically try a defensive style of play when they visit Anfield with Jose Mourinho in charge, but the Red Devils have just two clean sheets this season.

That defensive vulnerability could lead to owners of Sadio Mané (£9.7m), Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.1m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) considering them for the captaincy too.

Those who have still held onto Eden Hazard (£10.9m) may also be looking at him for Chelsea’s trip to Brighton. The Belgian has consistently returned points in the last three Gameweeks, a total of 20 in his last three matches from four assists.

Arsenal’s trip to Southampton could also yield some options with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) the most likely to take advantage of the Saints.

So I was looking at Kane & Auba's fixtures trying to see when the captaincy rotation ends/need to look for another big hitter to complement them...

Their fixture run is just astounding, literally as far as the eye can see until end of season:

    GW15 Kane SOU (24)
    GW16 Auba HUD (10)
    GW17 Kane BUR
    GW18 Auba BUR
    GW19 Kane BOU
    GW20 Kane WOL
    GW21 Auba FUL
    GW22 Auba whm
    GW23 Kane ful
    GW24 Auba CAR
    GW25 Kane NEW
    GW26 Kane LEI
    GW27 Auba SOU
    GW28 Auba BOU
    GW29 Spurs v Arsenal
    GW30 Kane sou
    GW31 Kane CPL
    GW32 Auba NEW
    GW33 Kane BRI
    GW34 Kane HUD
    GW35 Auba CPL
    GW36 Kane WHM
    GW37 Auba BRI
    GW38 Kane EVE

Maybe a little blip in GW22/23 wen they're away to west ham & fulham, but even then, those are derbies & there will be lots of goals as neither team can defend.

GW29 is the north london derby which is also usually a goalfest, so even though it looks tough enough on paper it should be a great captaincy fixture.

Any need for Sterling, Haz, Salah, Kun with those two?

Obviously if Salah starts scoring hattricks for fun its a problem, but I'd quite fancy Auba & Kane to start posting some monster scores with this run...

Well when Kane stats posting great scores with some regularity then maybe not, but while Sterling is pretty much fixture proof and doing it for £1m less you have to ask if there's any need for Kane

I was thinking similar - but - is Sterling "fixture proof"?

He's certainly not rotation proof, which means that in many games you're going sweating to be sweating on him playing...

The Kane/Auba captaincy has 34 points so far in GW15/16 for example, whilst Sterling has a grand total of 2 points

I think Kane & Auba will prove more reliable - Sterling will post some big scores too, but they could be harder to predict with his rotation

It's an appealing list, and certainly a consideration. But that's all it is, a list. Right now, taken over a form period of say 6 games Sterling is bossing it. Kane is doing merely fine. And with good back up, and with Sterling prone to complete rests, I don't think there's any fear in captaining him.

I wouldn’t call whu and ful blips!

You should probably be able to afford one of the others too; you don’t need to captain them to benefit from their points.

Well i have them both, and Sterling, but honestly - I'm not going to be captaining Sterling between now & the end of the season with this run (GW22 to Wolves he could easily be rested & I don't want that threat with my captinacy)

Sterling > Sane frees up 2.0 & keeps a supply line of G & A from Man City for example

I have Kane and auba too, and it’s a lovely run of captaincy options, for sure.

I had to sacrifice Hazard on wildcard to afford it but might try and get him back just for the steady stream of points and odd big haul that you can’t be as sure of from the 7-9m mids. Even if I don’t captain him.

I think it instantly sorts out the most important aspect of the game - the captinacy.

The kicker is - if you combine them with NONE of Salah, Kun, Haz, Sterling - you can pretty much guarantee every week one of those four will haul, but equally you could pretty much guarantee two or three of them will blank, so it could be overall a better use o funding in your team to ignore the other 4, as counter intuitive as that sounds.

All ifs & buts of course - but it's a ridiculous fixture run, I can't remember seeing anything like that using just two players (usually need 3 or 4 to generate that type of run)

I've looked at 'Captain Obvious' based on fixtures up to the North London derby (GW29). Points me to Kane / Auba / Sterling for now with a switch from Sterling to Salah in GW23

      GW17: Kane (BUR)
GW18: Auba (BUR) / Sterling (CPL)
GW19: Kane (BOU) / Salah (NEW)
GW20: Lukaku (BOU) / Kane (WOL)
GW21: Auba (FUL) / Kane (car)
GW22: Sterling (WOL) / Hazard (NEW)
GW23: Salah (CRY) / Lukaku (BHA)
GW24: Auba (CAR) / Lukaku (BUR) / Salah (LEI)
      GW25: Kane (NEW)
GW26: Salah (BOU) / Kane (LEI)
GW27: Auba (SOU) / Hazard (BHA)
GW28: Sterling (WHM) / Auba (BOU) / Salah (WAT)

I can see Sterling being a captaincy nightmare potentially though - which this pairing nearly avoids - Man City have two away games directly before Palace for example - one in the league & one league cup qtr final - which does Sterling play? And does he start v Palace?

This gameweek was a testament those 2 can be destroyed by Salah/Sterling and even Hazard. Those who owned and captained Salah were at least 32 points better off than Auba/Kane cappers.

But yeah i agree those 2 would surely do well til end of season, but we need more consistency from them.

It certainly felt that that way on Saturday afternoon - but if you look deeper, Salah got 4 points in GW15 - so its 34 points Kun/Auba GW15/16 vs. 50 points Salah GW15/16 both weeks - that's 16 points, which is obviously still a big gap, BUT it's basically one goal from Kane/Auba to make it back, and I'd wager that Salah is not going to hattrick every week.

You are right, though Salah started on the bench in the midweek game vs Burnley ( so did Kane vs Lei anyway). I just feel like Kane and Auba are fantastic options but Salah/Sterling can make them look ordinary captains in certain gameweeks. Still feel Salah would struggle to get another hatrick this season but you just never know with confidence after his performance.

Yep i think that's the crux of it - regardless of which combo of [Kane, Auba, Sterling, Haz, Kane, Kun] you go with - there's always an element of guesswork of who to captain, and it could always go wrong.

I just think with these two and this fixture run, you're stripping away as much variance as possible by creating a near endless run of "easy" (lol) games for them to score in

You cant have all 6 at the end of the day, and if you can generate a captaincy run with two, allowing a couple of million elsewhere, it may be profitable in the long run

Auba won't start, Spurs will give their all but it will probably be the most difficult fixture they have ever faced.

Yeah there's no way Auba starts EL... but he could get a training injury, some freak household accident, crash in a taxi in Amsterdam etc 🙂 I've had these incidents ruin a perfect FPL lineup previously!

This is the big concern - that Cardiff game still reverberates with a lot of folks (I didn't own him then luckily)

I thin kover the course of that run, it should even out though, for every unexpected home blank, he should hopefully get a hattrick somehwere further down the line etc- the fixtures are just too good to not deliver points overall

Excellent run, but it's not that easy. If say Auba or Kane finds good form, I would be inclined to captain even with a slightly harder fixture. And Sterling/Salah has also proven to be great captaincy shouts.

Nice list, Maximus. I don't have Auba (required too many hits to bring him in), but migth try to move that way over time. Aguero/Salah captaincy rotation was nice to have for the first third of the season, so this could be the answer now to who gets the armband.

I did notice that Hazard also rotates pretty well with Kane (the only bad fixture is GW 28 when they play each other... and a Man City captain is perhaps a worthwhile risk that week as they play Wsest Ham at the Etihad). I don't have Haz either, though!

Hoping to sort out captaincy risks after this week. For now Kane (c) to Burnley looks good this weekend as long as it's not another Cardiff experience.

I would go with Fabs, he is only like 10 points behind Ederson and West Ham have only had 2 clean sheets. He has shown he doesn't need clean sheets to get the points.

I bought Snodgrass yesterday as i had exact funds but now wondering whether i shouldve reshuffled and brought in Fanderson! 🙁

Can anyone help me with my doubts .....or would they like to make them worse by sharing any interesting stats or differences?

    🙂

No stat knowledge here, but it seems like a good move - Snoddy's on fire and will get you some points - best midfielder in that price category

I have Felipe as my fourth mid and I’m looking to get in snoddy as my fifth.

He has created more chances over the last two game weeks then any other MF. I am about to bring him in for my 5th MF.

Hey guys, I've had a few nightmare weeks - I've completely blown a comfortable lead in my ML.
I really hope my big guns can deliver in the coming weeks to get me back on track, what do you think of my team?

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Alonso TAA Kolasinac (WanB Bennett)
    Hazard Sterling F.Anderson Brooks (Hojbjerg)
    (K)ane Aubameyang Jimenez

Don't play Brooks or hojbjerg. Take your chances in defence. It's a really good team but Alonso is the elephant in the room there I'm afraid. Unfortunately you can't really get rid because he has some nice games coming up. I still prefer van dijk

With a total of 44 points last GW, i know i scraped through in LMS, but is that score making me officially out of the cup yeah?

Someone mentioned about random draws or something on previious pages.
    Any clarity would be appreciated.

44 was the absolute minimum to qualify, if your GWR was in the Top 4,194,304 then you've qualified

I scraped through thanks to Digne's last minute Free-Kick

44 points is not enough. 45 are in the random draw.

    Current Team:Patricio (Button)
Kolasnic - TAA - Doherty (Digne, Bennett)
    Sterling- Salah - F.Anderson - Sigurðsson (Obiang)
    Aubameyang - Wilson - Lacazette

    Is it worth doing Laca+Sigurðsson > 1. Kane (C) + Camarasa
    2. Son + Mitrovic

I completely missed the Everton game. Who won the penalty? And how was Richarlison? It’s a strange feeling to sell a player but then have him score for you.

Rich's goal was offside, Walcott knew he was offside but he still went to touch the ball then Gomes passed for Rich

I have £0.9m ITB and 1FT. I have a couple of playing subs Paterson & AWB so I was wondering if any of my first 11 should be upgraded with the extra cash. I was thinking TAA, but the bloke behind me in my mini league has him and therefore reluctant to give him a potential route to catch up.

    Fab

    Alonso, Robertson, TAA, Laporte

    Richarlison, Sterling, Anderson

    Wilson, Kane, Auba

    Thanks guys

I think it's a good team, have the Robbo/TAA double myself and it has served me well. Not sure if ManCity defender is needed if you feel adventurous to go for someone who may get attacking returns and Bonus. Subs?

    Options for WC:

A: Sterling + BIlva + Rich with Kamara permabench
B: Sterling + Son + Jimenez with Billing as permabench
    C: Sane + Son + Bilva + 0.6m (to possibly upgrade schinder > digne)
