Captains

Captain Sensible – Spurs and Man City the focus in Gameweek 17

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City appear to be the two sides at the centre of this week’s captaincy debate.

Both clubs have favourable fixtures in Gameweek 17 as well as some interest options for the armband.

As usual, we are here to compare the players themselves, their clubs, their opposition in order to work out which player should be our captain this weekend.

Captain Poll

Harry Kane (£12.6m) is our runaway poll leader for Gameweek 17 as Tottenham prepare to host Sean Dyche’s struggling Burnley side. He tops the pile with the backing of 46% of the vote, despite his no-show at Leicester in Gameweek 16 and an intense outing at Barcelona midweek. We are sure that the bulk of his support is chiefly influenced by opponents Burnley, who we will assess later in the article. That and the fact that Kane has four goals and two assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) is proving the second-most popular captain choice this week with 17% in the poll. That makes him the most fashionable Manchester City option ahead of their meeting with Everton on Saturday lunch-time. Sterling has four goals and five assists in the last seven Gameweeks but hasn’t registered attacking returns for the last two.

Up next is last week’s poll winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) who comes in with 10% backing with Arsenal travelling to Southampton this week. The Saints are still in a transitional period with new manager Ralph Hasenhuttle fresh in his role and the Gunners, given their attacking form, are expected by many to record a comfortable win at St Mary’s Stadium. Aubameyang has registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The fact he was rested for Thursday night’s Europa League match indicates he should get an eighth successive Premier League start on Sunday afternoon.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) looks to be the best of the rest heading into Gameweek 17 with a backing of 4.56%. Chelsea travel to Brighton this weekend, where they emerged 4-0 winners last season. The Belgian has four assists in his last three matches but is without a goal of his own since Gameweek 8.

Despite last week’s hat-trick, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains in the differential section of another captain poll. Ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Manchester United, just 3.93% of our voters are confident enough to hand the Egyptian the armband. That could prove a sensible decision considering that Salah has never scored or assisted against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Gameweek 17’s potentially powerful alternative Son Heung-min (£8.5m) sits just behind the Liverpool man on 3.44%. The fact that such a small number are backing him this week, those putting the armband on him may feel more confident in doing so, as the effect could be bigger.

The effect of Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy means that, despite Manchester City being at home, Sterling is the only of their options above 3% backing in this poll. Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) are the next most popular but have been chosen by 2.03% and 1.61% of voters respectively.

Nice and easy for me this week; Harry Kane, rested at Leicester last weekend takes on Burnley at Wembley looking to overtake Salah and Aubameyang as the Premier League’s top goalscorer. With Spurs showing good form and the likes of Eriksen and Alli back to fitness and feeding him ammunition, this looks a good opportunity for the England man to run up a big score.

Could there be richer rewards elsewhere though? Manchester City will be looking to bounce back after defeat at Chelsea last weekend and take on Everton at the Etihad where they’ve won all eight league games so far this season, scoring 30 goals in the process.

Maybe Mo Salah could prove a deadly differential on the back of his hat trick last week? Could there be carnage at the Cottage when Fulham’s obliging backline meets the increasingly free scoring West Ham attack?

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

Auba because I have no City or Spurs players and he has an easier fixture than Salah (that logic didn't work for me when I made the same decision last week).

Could be gold, will be interesting to see how the Southampton defence respond to a week of training with the new manager, not looked great so far.

Agreed - from the article (my caps):

[Kane] tops the pile with the backing of 46% of the vote, DESPITE his no-show at Leicester in Gameweek 16.

      That should read "because of".

As far as I'm concerned he's the only 100% nailed captaincy option this week. He's also against Burnley and Poch has come out saying that he wants people to consider Spurs to be title contenders. He has to back that up with a positive result.

Confident Sterling will start? I personally think it'll be Mahrez and Sane but could be wrong.

80% sure, yeah. He only had a rest against Watford not that long ago, and if he's going to miss any game I'd imagine it will be the lower priority cup match next midweek. I think there's quite a reasonable chance Pep plays all 3 of them actually, maybe like he did against Lyon away:

          Bernardo, Mahrez in attacking midfield

Sterling, Aguero/Jesus, Sane the 3 up top.

Owner here, fingers crossed he starts.

I think it'll be Bernardo, Fernandinho and Gundogan in midfield, then Sterling or Mahrez, Jesus or Aguero and Sane, but yeah there is a chance they all play like against Lyon, although I'm sure it was Sterling who operated in midfield rather than Mahrez - could be wrong though as it was a few weeks back.

Yeah it does a bit actually, especially seeing the member stats above too. Not sure why Kane is ranked so much higher on the rmt tool though when the fixture is he same as Kane, his stats are better than kane as shown in the first table, and he gets clean sheet points and an extra point for a goal over Kane....

Possibly, the Spurs match was Tuesday though and Son only played 70 in that so I imagine he's ok to play this weekend. I may do Sterling cap, Sane vice though to ensure a starter, I think a city cap and Son vice captaincy is too risky, I agree.

The good thing is that if Moura plays instead of Son, then at least he kills all the Kane captainers with Kane lurking in his own half instead all match 😉

It is hard to ignore Sterling's success at home, 10.6 ppm. He has scored every time when he plays except for the MUN match. (c) Sterling and (vc) Sane may be the safe bet as a non-Kane owner.

Adding Auba and Hazard to the mix isn't helping either...

Hopefully all four finish the game week with hauls 🙂

Aubameyang as he's a better goalscorer than Harry Kane (there, I said it), and for the first time this season, I own him for a match that he's actually nailed for. Lacazette vice captain seem the sensible choice, since he would slot nicely into the lone CF role if Auba plays 0 mins. I'll take the risk that there's no snow forecasted without even checking 😎

Considering Salah at the moment. Although I've no Spurs or City attackers. Other options for my armband this week are Haz and Auba.

Salah looks to be back to form. He is the top points scorer this year in FPL, is at home where he has only blanked twice this season (vs City and Everton). United look poor defensively, aren't in great form and have injuries. Salah still somewhat of a differential.

      Not straightforward this week.

I would like to captain Son or Sterling but too much of a risk, they might not start.

      So, going for Kane.

If I still had him, would be tempted to captain Salah. His eyes are screaming for goals. He means business and back to his best.

If Sterling is benched and Kane doesnt do much, dont think I will resist the temptation of bringing back Salah.

Kane has to be the go to this week imo. Sterling a rotation risk and Everton are proving no push overs this year.

      Which do you prefer?

      A) Mane > Son (I'm worried about Son being benched here)
      B) Wilson, Mane > Kane, Camarasa (To be second sub)

Kane gives me a clear captain option this week otherwise I would be choosing between Auba, Hazard, Sterling.

      Any ideas on this team?

      Ryan Button
      Alonso Robertson Doherty Fernandez Bennett
      Sterling Sane Son Richarlison Anderson
      Kane Wilson Kamara

      1 Ft 0.1 itb

Save FT or do Wilson > Chicha?

Going on what Emery said about Lacca needing rhythm to play well and he only played 63mins, plus Arsenal play Sunday I reckon he starts alongside Aubba

      (Have Sterling & Kane)

Is it stupid to consider transferring Rich out? I can get in Robbo for TAA then

I did Richarlison > Anderson this week and pretty happy with it although I will reconsider him in two weeks time as evertons fixtures turn again

Rich is a player that can score against all teams. I'll stick this week. If he scores it will be double great. Clean sheet for City gone and points for you. 😀 ( i don't have City defense in my team )

I think he's a better option than Bellerin when they both play, but can be a bigger rotation risk down the line when the defence is healthier.

I'm thinking of going Bellerin mainly because of security of starts in this period and I think he is still getting forward a lot and is due to get something...

      Best move:

      A) Bench TAA and play Wan Bissaka

      B) TAA >>> Kolasinac

      Thanks guys.

All comes down to length of TAA injury. If only a week then AWB a good back up to keep TAA in your team which I think is worth it. Reassess once more is known next week

      Hi Gents! Kindly RMT!

I have already used my FT and I would need to take out D.Silva for a -4.

      Hennessey

      Alonso - Robertson - Doherty - Kolasinac

      Sterling - Son - F.Anderson - Richarlison

      Kane (C) - Jimenez

Subs: Hart, DAVID SILVA, Success, Digne

      --

The plan was to bench Richarlison (vs City) for this week and play Silva.

If I sell Silva, I will have 9.6 ITB which means I could get either:
Sane, Alli, Mahrez BUT FOR A -4... Worth it? (Will bench Richarlison)

I do want to work on trying to get Hazard back, but it'll be next week.. won't do it for a -8 this week.

Let me know your thoughts and comments!

      -4 for which mid?
Or hold and replace Silva next week?

      Cheers!

Trying to climb up.. OP: 120k

        Afternoon all! Advice needed!

        Current squad
        Foster Bego
        TAA Doherty Digne WB Peltier
        Salah Dsilva Fraser Fanderson Hojberg
        Kane Jiminez Auba

I think TAA to kola is the obvious decision but very confused who to replace Dsilva with as dont have funds for Sane:
        A. Mahrez - worried wont play/start
        B. Son - as above
        C. Moura
        D. Pereyra - Guaranteed to start and differential and good fixture?
        E. Bsilva

Only one transfer so all with a 4 point hit!!! Any advice and suggestions would be great 🙂 thanks

Expect minutes for Mahrez and Son over Xmas. Everyone will rotate and both got haul potential. Same as Bilva.

          Personally - Son.

Keep Wilson. He'll probably be involved this GW.

For TAA, I also have him and I am tempted to sell. I'm surprisingly looking at Lovren. Even though Liverpool have some tough fixtures coming up both Arsenal and United are at Anfield and between them it's 2 easy fixtures. Liverpool have conceded only 6 times this season, with Matip & Gomez out Lovren looks pretty nailed on and has good BPS potential.
Otherwise I'd look at Doherty if you don't own him or Bellerin (Kola if you don't have enough cash)

        Lacazette owners

        A) Laca> Chicharito
        B) Laca + Alonso > Auba + Kolasinac

Would deffo not lose Alonso before this run of fixtures.

I have Laca, and I am keeping, atleast a couple more weeks.

If you really want to move him, take the in form Chicha.

Keeping as I sense points off the bench or starting from both him and Auba.
