Captains

Captain Sensible – Spurs and Man City the focus in Gameweek 17

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City appear to be the two sides at the centre of this week’s captaincy debate.

Both clubs have favourable fixtures in Gameweek 17 as well as some interest options for the armband.

As usual, we are here to compare the players themselves, their clubs, their opposition in order to work out which player should be our captain this weekend.

Captain Poll

Harry Kane (£12.6m) is our runaway poll leader for Gameweek 17 as Tottenham prepare to host Sean Dyche’s struggling Burnley side. He tops the pile with the backing of 46% of the vote, despite his no-show at Leicester in Gameweek 16 and an intense outing at Barcelona midweek. We are sure that the bulk of his support is chiefly influenced by opponents Burnley, who we will assess later in the article. That and the fact that Kane has four goals and two assists in his last five Premier League starts.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) is proving the second-most popular captain choice this week with 17% in the poll. That makes him the most fashionable Manchester City option ahead of their meeting with Everton on Saturday lunch-time. Sterling has four goals and five assists in the last seven Gameweeks but hasn’t registered attacking returns for the last two.

Up next is last week’s poll winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) who comes in with 10% backing with Arsenal travelling to Southampton this week. The Saints are still in a transitional period with new manager Ralph Hasenhuttle fresh in his role and the Gunners, given their attacking form, are expected by many to record a comfortable win at St Mary’s Stadium. Aubameyang has registered returns in three of the last four Gameweeks. The fact he was rested for Thursday night’s Europa League match indicates he should get an eighth successive Premier League start on Sunday afternoon.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) looks to be the best of the rest heading into Gameweek 17 with a backing of 4.56%. Chelsea travel to Brighton this weekend, where they emerged 4-0 winners last season. The Belgian has four assists in his last three matches but is without a goal of his own since Gameweek 8.

Despite last week’s hat-trick, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains in the differential section of another captain poll. Ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Manchester United, just 3.93% of our voters are confident enough to hand the Egyptian the armband. That could prove a sensible decision considering that Salah has never scored or assisted against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Gameweek 17’s potentially powerful alternative Son Heung-min (£8.5m) sits just behind the Liverpool man on 3.44%. The fact that such a small number are backing him this week, those putting the armband on him may feel more confident in doing so, as the effect could be bigger.

The effect of Pep Guardiola’s rotation policy means that, despite Manchester City being at home, Sterling is the only of their options above 3% backing in this poll. Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) are the next most popular but have been chosen by 2.03% and 1.61% of voters respectively.

still important to cover Liverpools defense ?

TAA > Lovren looks the simplest way to cover them over xmas....

hes nailed on until the end of the year anyway because of injures...

Robertson will probably be the highest scoring defender this season and is currently the best value player in the game.

On a WC and this is what I got currently. 0.2 ITB

    Fab – (Hamer)
    Robbo – Luiz – Doherty – Schindler – (WB)
    Hazard – Sane – Son – Fanderson – (Gunnarson)
    Auba – Kane – (Kamara)

Not happy with the 4th def but it allows me to have all the rest so have to live with that.

I could get Leno in for Fab with the money left. Should I?

Usually very late in the season if last few years anything to go by

The fact that all 6 teams are qualified in Europe, and many going deep in the LEague Cup actually genreates possibility of a triple Gameweek towards end of year

i was thinking the same thing, i have been watching him closely, pretty much every match and i dont see a particular drop in form at all, just the team has struggled a little more and had tougher fixtures but never crossed my mind t odrop....so many people on here saying hazard trolling again becasue they do the usual 'hes only got 1 haul in 5 weeks' without looking at the factors behind that , small injuries and playing 20 mins against palace.

      Hazard forever 🙂

The Reds have now been delivered another major blow as their No. 66 has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Man United and next Friday’s trip to Wolves.

He could also miss the Boxing Day game against Newcastle, and the following match against Arsenal.

It’s hoped though that he will be back available for the visit to Manchester City on January 3.

yep, i'd say you were unlucky. If that's the only time you've been unlucky this season then you're playing the game well 😉

  29. Can Everton keep City at bay if they’re without Gueye?

News of Gueye potentially being out is important for the captaincy debate this week. He is the only reason everton's defence has been any use at all. Without him and facing a wounded City with potentially Aguero and KDB back....

    https://statsbomb.com/2018/11/idrissa-gueye-powers-evertons-surprising-defense/

to summarise the article, the key passage is this:

"In fact Gueye leads the Premier League (among players with 500 minutes played or more) with 3.63 possession adjusted tackles per 90 minutes this season and he’s seventh with 2.01 possession adjusted interceptions. Even if you don’t adjust for possession he’s still third in the Premier League in combined tackles and interceptions with 5.11 per 90 minutes. He’s not a machine at applying pressures, but he is one when it comes to winning the ball back.

This is the Everton gamble. They’re a high wire act. They get tons of bodies forward, and position themselves high up the field, but rather than work collectively to pressure the ball, they rely on an elite midfielder to win the ball back for them. Without Gueye the entire system would collapse. The fullbacks would get caught high up the field, Andre Gomes would constantly be stranded in space. The center backs would be left out on an island. That still happens sometimes, Everton’s shots conceded map shows that the opposition has some success taking the ball to the rim, but not nearly as often as it might, and that’s all thanks to Gueye."

nice patience in waiting for the top of the page.

Everton play quite open from the games I've watched. City should score at least 3.

Yeah, I don't think Silva is stupid enough to play open away at the Etihad, and they have been quite solid playing away at Anfield and Stamford Bridge recently, should have picked up two 0-0 draws really if it wan't for a freak goal. But City are better at attacking than those sides, and losing their best defensive midfielder really can't be a good thing. Their big chances conceded total was quite high anyway, even with Gueye present in the team, so they've perhaps been a little fortunate to concede as few as they have too.

Let’s just hope it’s not Aguero who scores them all...

If both Sane & Sterling start, pretty much guaranteed a green arrow.

I read this a while back but thanks for reposting. If I didn't own Kane, the armband would be on Sane for sure.

How does Tom Davies fare compared to Gueye? Wondering whether they could use Davies in a similar role as he is quick and high energy, but would need to curb his attacking instincts.

IMO Gueye is unique, even when my team Villa got relegated he was posting good numbers and the closest in the league to Kante. If he's out this weekend, I imagine Everton will need to change shape / tactic rather than simply replace with Davies - I could be wrong though.

Kante is a good comparison. a shape or tactic change to something unfamiliar before a trip to the etihad doesn't seem particularly ideal either!

Yeah for sure, if they go with Gomes and Davies in the double pivot - Sterling / Sane could be this weeks Salah.

Yep he was 2nd to Kante for tackles made I believe that season. Was very much under the radar though with Villa being so poor.
Hopefully McCarthy gets a chance. On his day he's easily as good.

This is what Mourinho wants and can have for under 40mn but he prefers to crib and shops overpriced outside so they waste 1 year wage adjusting

Without Gueye Marcos Silva may resort to 3 at back to suffocate city midfield runs

It won't make any difference to the result imo. He's not even been in great form recently anyway.
