The Complete Guide to our FPL Gameweek 17 tips and advice

Just when we thought it was safe to sell him, last season’s top points scorer in FPL issued a brutal reminder to show us just why he is this season’s most expensive player – Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) bagged a hat trick.

G-Whizz immediately asked the obvious question – Mo Salah or No Salah?

Not every Salah seller will be as sanguine as Fitzy in their reply, who commented (no doubt through gritted-teeth):

Glad I sold him this week so I don’t have to consider what to do with him…

Joe appears to have ditched his plans to sell Salah for another midfield heavyweight, as his confidence in Salah’s ability to justify his price tag is reinvigorated. Joe discussed his plans in this week’s FPL Question Time:

I’m likely to stick with him over the next three fixtures then re-assess ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City clashes in Gameweek 20 and 21 respectively.

FPL General wasn’t as definite in his opinion piece this week, confiding that he will be mulling over a possible Salah to Sterling (£11.6m) transfer. Although he admitted that:

Most likely, I’ll just do Arnie to Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) or Javier Hernandez (£6.4m) and roll the other transfer.

West Ham’s run of fixtures and attacking form has not gone unnoticed by the community and article writers alike. Geoff asked if we should consider a double up, and on Wednesday David ran the rule over their enticing prospects in a members article. Two of their players – Felipe Anderson (£7.3m) and Hernandez – make the Scout Picks squad.

Adding more weight to the move, the new leader in the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league, Gregor, singled out Hernandez in his ‘Eye Test’. However a word of warning – it has emerged that the Mexican had a knock and didn’t train earlier in the week. Although he reportedly did train on Friday and should be fine…

Neale (aka Skonto Rigga) has rounded-up the rest of the team news ahead of Gameweek 17. Injuries to the Liverpool defence, including 27.2% owned Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.3m) poses a dilemma for FPL managers. Liverpool have four clean sheets in their last five Premier League matches but with fixtures stiffening perhaps this is the time to sell?

Jealous Viper began a discussion about TAA replacements on Friday morning.

One team to consider for candidates is Watford. In his article, FPL General pointed out that over “the next seven Gameweeks, Javi Gracia’s side face just one of the top six” and that “Kiko Femenia (£4.2m) could be a nice differential”. For those interested this appears to be the player transferred in by World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen (currently 1,084 OR), if we are to trust new predictive website FPL Transfer Spy.

As ever, we have the important decision on captaincy to make. How lucky we are to have ‘Mr 100% captaincy record’ David to help us. He “continues to exhibit voodoo like powers in his armband choice” observed Greyhead in his Gameweek 16 analysis of The Great and The Good. David has moved into the top 10,000 for the first time this season.

David has prepared the invaluable Captain Sensible article and shared his thoughts with Joe in the Captaincy Options video. Despite noting some improvements in the Burnley rearguard, he appears set to trust Kane with preserving his 100% record.

In the interests of impartiality, other armband options are available – for those still holding City’s Aguero (£11.2m) he could be a canny choice against an Everton side who will be lacking the protection of Idrissa Gueye (£4.8m). The Rumour Mill helpfully summarised an article from StatsBomb, which highlighted just how valuable he is to Everton’s system.

City have been discussed throughout the week in several Hot Topics starting with a look at their midfield options.

However Maximus Bonimus Pointimus questioned their captaincy potential due to Pep’s unpredictable squad rotation. Irbox largely agreed but, as a result of Mendy’s injury, he feels Sané (£9.6m) could be the exception to Pep’s rotation roulette. avfc82 followed this up with a detailed look at Pep’s player selection on the left when Mendy has been injured.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also on our radars.

Maximus Bonimus Pointimus marvelled at the Aubameyang (£11.5m) and Kane captaincy rotation stretching as far as the end of the season. Having seen his ownership rise to 36.1% following six prices rises since the start of the month, and after being rested in the Europa League, the Gabonese striker could play a big part in determining if we end the week with a red or green arrow.

While most will be favouring Kane in the captaincy stakes, keep in mind that Aubameyang faces a Southampton side who have conceded 9 goals over the last four gameweeks.

Having suffered with injury recently, Hazard (£10.9m) recovered some form in Gameweek 16, as Neale observed in his analysis of the key statistics. Neale confessed to being nervous about not owning the Belgium star in FPL Question Time, he feels that:

Chelsea’s own enticing run over the next six Gameweeks (bri, LEI, wat, cry, SOU, NEW) has almost been overlooked.

One thing for certain is that we won’t be able to cram all the premium players into our sides. Although no doubt some of us will try. A perfectly timed community article from Reckoner brought us up-to-date on which players are providing value for money. He points out that “the best value players are never the most expensive players.”

However buyer beware – value can also be a hindrance:

It can put you in a position of weakness when you have a lot of value tied up in a player.

The point was well made by top 50 Hall of Fame manager Adam Hopcroft, a guest on the Scoutcast last Tuesday (see 01:14:21 in the Scoutcast). Being reluctant to sell a player because they have shot up in value can hamper decision making, Adam cited the example of Mané (£9.7m) earlier in the season.

The cloud that hung over the week was the racial abuse suffered by Raheem Sterling, who later challenged the media to reconsider their coverage of black players. An insightful discussion was to be found on the excellent Double Pivot Podcast. They explained why it’s important to confront race as a discourse, and examined how it can influence people working in football, such as coaches and scouts, to reinforce stereotypes.

COMMUNITY TOURNAMENTS

The draw for the third round of the FFS Members Cups has taken place, 128 managers remain in the competition.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score in Gameweek 16 was 40, this saw 147 managers depart leaving 1,476 still standing.

Matthieu Raoux held onto his lead in our main FFS League despite slipping one place to fourth overall. This is Matthieu’s third FPL season and by far his best. He has yet to play his wildcard or any other chips, and is only 26 points behind the overall leader.

Tore Bjorheim scored an impressive 81 points to maintain a slender four point lead at the top of our FFS Members League. He is now sixth overall and first in Norway!

Moving up to third in our Members League is Fábio Borges, this is only Fábio’s fifth season playing FPL yet he’s been remarkably consistent and successful so far. In his first season he finished 17,996 and has improved incrementally each year – a rank of 4,682 in 2015/16 was followed with one of 1,145 in 2016/17, and last year he came 671st overall.

He is currently 39th, and at the last refresh had moved up to 11th in the Live Hall of Fame despite being up against managers who have played the game for considerably longer. He seems certain to move into the top 10 at the next refresh.

As mentioned, Graeme Sumner (aka Gregor) is the new leader of the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league. Featured in my Top Five articles last season, Graeme is currently 39th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame (probably higher after the next update). He has finished in the top 10,000 six times in nine seasons, three of them in the top 1,000 with his best finish being 29th in 2016/17.

Luke Aiello holds an 18 point lead at the top of RedLightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league. He wisely captained Salah on his way to a score of 81 points, and is now 24th overall.

After the third round of FFS Manager Melee Community Tournament, three teams remain undefeated and three teams are yet to scrape a victory. With three matchdays to go before the start of the knockout phase, can one of the teams on zero points win all their remaining games and make the quarter finals? I certainly hope so.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

What The Opta Match Facts Are Saying - Gameweek 17

I have submitted a community article (like i submitted one for Gameweek 8 - What The Match Facts are Saying, in which I discussed how certain teams can be bogey teams for others, and how certain players have a team whom they somehow always manage to score) but it seems like Geoff didn't get time to see it, so I will share the information here.

I have analyzed the Opta Match Facts for all the Gameweek 17 fixtures and came up with the following conclusions, which is based solely on the Opta Match Facts.

(Note - This if you want clarification regarding any conclusion, feel free to ask. I will give you the relevant Opta Match Facts which led me for that particular conclusion.)

    1. Manchester City vs Everton

    - Opta Match Facts suggest Manchester City to win or draw.

    - Opta Match Facts indicate this fixture to be a low scoring game as evidenced by the fact that Everton have drawn each of their last three away games against Manchester City in the Premier League, with just four goals being scored in these meetings (two each).

PS - Marco Silva has lost all three Premier League matches as a manager against Manchester City, including both fixtures at Etihad Stadium by a 3-1 scoreline.
Is another 3-1 win for Manchester City on the cards?

    2. Crystal Palace vs Leicester City

    - Overall Head-to-Head record suggests a Crystal Palace win as evidenced by the fact that Leicester City have won just three of their last 14 games at Selhurst Park in all competitions (D5 L6), with the most recent of these coming in the 2015-16 season when the Foxes won the Premier League (1-0).

    - However, Palace have lost each of their last 13 Premier League matches without Wilfied Zaha, and failed to score in 11 of those. This fact indicates a Leicester win.

    3. Huddersfield Town vs Newcastle United

    - Opta Match Facts indicate Newcastle United to win as evidenced by the fact that Huddersfield have won just two of their last 13 games against Newcastle in all competitions (D4 L7).

    - Opta Match Facts suggest this fixture to be a low scoring game as The most recent five top-flight meetings have produced just four goals.

    4. Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley

    - Opta Match Facts suggest Tottenham to win or draw.

    - Kane to score is a possibility as indicated by the fact that Spurs striker Harry Kane has scored four goals in five Premier League appearances against Burnley, including a hat-trick in the most recent of those (3-0 in December 2017).

PS - Harry Kane has scored eight goals in his last four Premier League starts in December. After not start in the last Gameweek, will normal Kane service resume this Gameweek?

    5. Watford vs Cardiff City

    - Opta Match Facts suggest Cardiff to win or draw.

PS - Troy Deeney is yet to score a goal against Cardiff City for Watford in six appearances, but should he score in this match then Cardiff will be the 45th different team that Deeney has scored against for the Hornets in all competitions. Can he break his hoodoo and score in this Gameweek ?

    6. Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Bournemouth

    - Opta Match Facts indicate a Bournemouth win, perhaps with a 2-1 scoreline as suggested by the fact that Bournemouth have won each of their last three games against Wolves in all competitions, with each victory coming by the same 2-1 scoreline. (However, this was before the Jorge Mendes revolution at Wolves, so they should treated with caution)

    - Opta Match Facts suggest both sides to score as suggested by the fact that Nine of the 11 games between Wolves and Bournemouth in all competitions have seen both sides score, including in each of the last seven fixtures.

    7. Fulham vs West Ham United

    - Overall Head-to-Head record indicates a West Ham win as suggested by the fact that West Ham have won 55% of their Premier League meetings with Fulham (11/20); their best win percentage against any London opponent in the competition.

    - However their recent Head-to-Head record at the Craven Cottage suggests Fulham to win as indicated by the fact that Fulham have won three of their last four Premier League games against West Ham at Craven Cottage (L1), with each of those wins coming under a different manager (Roy Hodgson, Martin Jol and Rene Meulensteen).

    8. Brighton & Hove Albion vs Chelsea

    - Opta Match Facts indicate Chelsea to win.

PS - Chelsea have won their first two Premier League games against Brighton without conceding (2-0 and 4-0) - the only other team they have won their first three games against in the competition without conceding is Portsmouth (won the first six without conceding). Is another Chelsea clean sheet on the cards?

    9. Southampton vs Arsenal

    - Overall Head-to-Head record suggests Arsenal to win as indicated by the fact that Arsenal have lost just two of their last 17 games against Southampton in the Premier League (W9 D6), with both of those defeats coming in 2015 with Ronald Koeman in charge of the Saints.

    - However, recent record between the two sides at St. Mary's Stadium suggests Southampton can cause an upset as indicated by the fact that Arsenal have won only one of their last seven away games against Southampton in the Premier League (D4 L2), with that lone victory coming in May 2017 (2-0).

PS - The New Manager effect can often defy every logic and stats (Opta Match Facts included). The question is will it have a positive or negative impact on Southampton?

    10. Liverpool vs Manchester United

    - Opta Match Facts suggest a Draw or a Manchester United win as indicated by the fact that Liverpool are winless in their last eight Premier League games against Manchester United (D3 L5) - they haven't gone longer without a win against the Red Devils in league competition since April 1988 (12 games).

    - Opta Match Facts indicate Mata to get attacking returns as suggested by the fact that Mata has been involved in seven Premier League goals against Liverpool (3 goals, 4 assists), including three in his three at Anfield. Only against Newcastle (8) has the Spaniard been involved in more goals in the competition.

PS - Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have yet to score or assist for the club in 855 Premier League minutes against Manchester United. Can they finally break this unwanted streak?

What do you agree with, and what do you not agree with? How much do you think this kind of information can help us make useful predictions for our teams? What are your biggest takeaways?

Taking Sterling in and out just seems silly

Also, I know this isn't exactly scientific, but you do know that taking Alonso out during a bad run is probably going to end in tears, right. He's streaky, and he's had his 'poor' run. Chelsea look good, and he could haul 15+ at any minute

Probably, but cost is an issue.

I see it a bit like Alonso v Luiz. Both will get you regular points but one is most likely going to outscore the other over the remainder of the season.

I’ve gone for Snodgrass, but if I had unlimited funds I’d have picked Anderson.

That and the fact that it’s West Ham too.

Unpredictable team, can easily go on a bad run over the holidays and lose games we expect them to win.

I decided Alonso over Luiz was better than Anderson over Snodgrass, but that’s just me.

Both players are decent FPL option, though.

well, Luiz have outscored Alonso since GW4 just so you know, not the best comparison. This also have to with your team structure, Snoddy will for most teams be a rotating mid, whenever your squad needs him. Anderson should be your third or fourth mid which i would be very reluctant not to play except when City away maybe, a bit like Richarlison perhaps. i´d be very surprised if Anderson stays in many teams when he loses form, which he will if one look at his history, he is very streaky. Pleasant for the eye though, excellent on the ball and moves like a ballerina. Not so classy as Coutinho but he is faster.

Alonso Doherty Schindler Kolasinac -- Digne
Hazard Anderson Sane Son -- Rich
    Kane Mitro -- Kamara

A: Worth getting Bilva on a WC and then moving to Rich in 2 weeks time? worried about only 1 city attacker. the only downside is i will have to sell Rich at 6.8 and buy back at 7.1

B: Perhaps Kola > Bellerin? but i think kola is nailed for now...

C: Sane + Son >> Sterling + Bilva...really tempting esp as son might not start

So difficult to know, A sounds like a good plan if it’s easy to get Richarlison back

Jimenez is very consistent, but good chica has better chance of explosive returns. Toss a coin??

Feels more than ever before that there is excessive rotation risks with some premium mods.

    Son, Sterling, Sané

Does this make Salah and Hazard better options (downgrading Aubameyang or Kane to find the moves?)

Yep. It's why I reluctantly ended up keeping Hazard.

Always the attacker. Don't have any justification for this just what I do.

What moves would you make here? Would lose a FT if I don't use both

    Fabianski
    Robbo Alonso Laporte Doherty
    Salah Haz Sterling Richarlison
    Mitro Wilson

    Button Kenedy Kamara Balbuena

    2FT. 0.4 ITB

It doesnt make sense if you play both laporte and richarlison

Haha yeah, I don't like playing attackers against defenders.

City's defence has regressed so I am tempted by Laporte to VVD but their fixtures are so good. Could do Richarlison to F. Anderson.

Really only dropable players are Wilson and Richarlison for this game week?!

I’m not sure Anderson and Mitrovic/Jimenez??

Me personally, I’d use both xfrs to downgrade Haz and get Auba or Kane for Mitrovic.

That or work on your bench cos it’s not going to help you at all in the coming weeks.
