Hazard haul proves he cannot be ignored with Chelsea fixtures

Eden Hazard hung most premium Fantasy Premier League assets out to dry in Gameweek 17.

He was the star of the show as Chelsea beat Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

We’ve got all the talking points from the Amex Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Goals: Solly March (£5.0m) | Pedro (£6.3m), Eden Hazard (£10.9m)

Assists: Bernardo (£4.2m) | Hazard, Willian (£7.3m)

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) continued to show he cannot be ignored for Fantasy inclusion as he registered his fifth double-figure haul of the season against Brighton. With a goal and five assists in his last four matches, at an average of 7.5 points per game, he has proved his doubters wrong. Despite claims that his chance creation counted little when those around him couldn’t finish, no Premier League player has more assists from Gameweek 14 onwards than him. The Belgian now looks a serious captain candidate on several occasions over Christmas too. Chelsea have very favourable fixtures on the horizon, with Leicester (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (away) and Southampton (home) their next four opponents.

For a second match running, Hazard was used a false-nine with Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) on the bench and Álvaro Morata (£8.5m) left out of the matchday squad entirely. The latter picked up an injury in Chelsea’s Europa League outing on Thursday night but has not been in the form worthy of inclusion anyway. It sounds like manager Maurizio Sarri intends to continue using Hazard as the furthest forward player in his line-up, with Pedro (£6.3m) and Willian (£7.3m) flanking him. That only adds to Hazard’s appeal over the winter period, with Giroud and Morata rumoured to be replaced in the January transfer window.

“I think that, for us, (Hazard) could be very important in this position. He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, he is very able to create spaces. Now I think that, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box.” – Maurizio Sarri

However, Hazard’s owners and anyone looking to sign him for Gameweek 18 will have to track his fitness over the coming days. He was substituted in the second half at the Amex Stadium after taking a knock on the ankle. Sarri is not too concerned but it will be sensible just to see what is said about him in the next Chelsea press conference before making any decisions on him.

“It was only a knock. It shouldn’t be a big problem.” – Maurizio Sarri

While Hazard rewarded those who had shown faith in him, the same was not true for Marcos Alonso (£7.0m). In fact, he came away with his third successive blank away from home, averaging just 0.67 FPL points per game in those fixtures. It could have been a different story as he rattled the Brighton woodwork in the second half with a rasping shot, but minutes later the hosts had wiped out his clean sheet. There will be some Alonso owners considering themselves lucky to have got one point out of him as he could easily have been sent off. The Spaniard probably should have been booked for a foul in the first half, which meant that his yellow card for a push on Anthony Knockaert (£5.4m) in the second would have seen him leave the pitch. However, such was his position when committing that foul on the Seagulls’ forward that it the eyes of many, that incident alone warranted a red card.

“My first impression was that it was a red card. Having seen it again, I do understand that it’s a difficult decision with the pace on the ball and whether Solly would have been right through. I can understand that a bit. I still think there are referees who would have sent him off as the last man. But he should have been on a yellow card anyway. He pulled back Anthony, which is generally always a yellow card. There were two incidents. He should have been on a yellow. If someone pulls someone back on more than one occasion, it should be a yellow.” – Chris Hughton

Sarri might consider rotating one of either Pedro and Willian in the near future. Not least because of the congested nature of the upcoming schedule, but also because they struggled with concentration at times against Brighton. While they both registered attacking returns, there were multiple occasions for each one when they were needlessly caught offside. Hazard showed no such problems, timing his runs through the middle to perfection, especially when he went through to score Chelsea’s second goal.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.8m) came through his injury doubt to start for the second match in a row, and the fifth time in Chelsea’s last six league outings. Ross Barkley (£5.6m), for the fourth time in six Gameweeks, had to settle only for a substitute’s appearance.

It was also a disappointing afternoon for Glenn Murray (£6.6m) owners as he was substituted in the 59th minute, seemingly for tactical reasons. He was replaced by Florin Andone (£5.0m), meaning just a second blank in home matches for the veteran forward.

There was a fifth consecutive start for Pascal Groß (£6.7m) but he continues to offer little in the way of attacking or creative potential. Furthermore, in his latest run in the side, he has completed just one match.

His return has seen Solly March (£5.0m) pushed back to his more natural position of left-winger, and it was him who scored Brighton’s only goal of the game. The Seagulls were in the ascendancy in the second half as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and March was in the right place at the right time when Bernardo (£4.2m) headed back across goal. The midfielder controlled well and smashed the ball over the line from close-range. March has now been involved in five Brighton goals in his last seven outings and created more chances than any of his colleagues against Chelsea. The next two fixtures are tricky for Chris Hughton’s men with Bournemouth (away) and Arsenal (home) up next, but March could present a cheap midfield option for Gameweek 20 when Everton come to the Amex Stadium.

Owners of any Chelsea defensive asset may want to lay the blame at the door of the officials. They were unhappy with the state of Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s (£5.2m) socks as he was preparing to come on and asked him to tape them up before allowing him to take to the field. It was while he was doing this, that Brighton got the ball over the line. However, given that the hosts were enjoying a purple patch, it is unlikely Loftus-Cheek’s presence would have made much difference.

Hughton still seems a fan of rotating in the full-back areas. Martin Montoya (£4.3m) was preferred to Bruno (£4.4m) on Sunday, after missing out on Gameweek 16. However, Bernardo has now made five consecutive starts at left-back in place of Gaëtan Bong (£4.5m). It was Leon Balogun (£4.2m) who filled in for the suspended Shane Duffy (£4.6m) once again, who still has one match left on his current suspension.

Brighton XI (4-1-4-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Balogun, Montoya; March, Stephens, Pröpper, Knockaert (Locadia 83′); Groß (Bissouma 81′); Murray (Andone 59′).

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rudiger, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Kovacic 75′), Jorginho, Kante; Pedro (Loftus-Cheek 66′), Hazard (Giroud 83′), Willian.

Everyone clearly knows how lacking in quality the United squad is yet simultaneously slams Jose for only achieving 2nd place and winning the Europa League.

Surely the lack of a title challenge is because of the gap in quality of the players, as demonstrated by these one-sided joint squads?

        I agree in general.

But it is arguable that United have had the money to spend and there is a perception that José has either wasted that money on square pegs and/or he hasn't been able to get the best out of them and make them gel with the rest of the team.

Would it be fair to say that Liverpool's squad, as a whole, was no stronger than United's at the point at which Klopp took over.

There is something about Mourinho's management style which is strangling the team. It's one thing to stifle your own creativity for tactical reasons but if you're going to do that you can't allow 36 shots against you. Against anyone.

I actually want Manchester United to be the best club in the country, like they used to be. I think they are the biggest club and I want them to perform as if they are. If they are going to do that they need a change of direction.

Recruitment has been dire at United. But that is more the fault of the scouts and what they report back. Jose cannot be scouting players all over the world, he is dependant on competent scout reports and Ed Woodward. They are also giving these players huge wages and are overestimating their ability.

The only player Jose actually found and scouted himself was Dalot, whom he spotted after seeing one or two games in the Portuguese league. He actually looks good promising for a 19 year old.

Bad signings carry over many years due to large lengthy contracts, so it's unfortunately going to be a while until United recover from the bad decisions of the past.

Well then I hope he gets the time and space he needs to rebuild.

To be fair to the board, they *seem* to be very patient about everything. Perhaps it really is a long-term vision that they have.

Mourinho and long-term vision that's an oxymoron. He was brought it to be the ruthless mercenary he's known for. Win at all costs now to the detriment of the long-term and playing youth. However, he can't even achieve that anymore he's a broken man that is well past his sell by date. This United side that he's largely built is the worst in over 25 years and he's completely ostracised it's best player. He'll be lucky to last the season and beat that football genius Moyes' season.

The bad decisions of the past are that you haven't had a decent manager since Fergie. But please do keep making excuses for Jose everyone is hoping he never loses his current job.

No. The underating of the players is because they are not performing under Jose. None of mourinhos purchases have improved at United.

    Alonso, Robertson, Doherty (Digne, AWB)
    Sterling, Hazard, Richarlison, Snodgrass (Fraser)
    Kanae, Chicharito, Jiminez

    1FT, 0.1 ITB. Wildcard remaining.

Finding it tough to use my FT, let alone burn the wildcard. Potentially thinking of moving Ederson on, but not with City's next 3 fixtures. Sterling could go to Sané, but probably unneccesary.

Monitor Kane/Hazard this week and go from there?

A lot can change between now and February and van Dijk is out of the first leg.

That being said, I really can't see Bayern's defence dealing with Liverpool's pace.

      Moyes or LvG in?

How many managers will it take before people realise the players are not of the same quality as De Bruyne, Hazard, Salah, Silva, Aguero etc? No manager can turn Phil Jones into Van Dijk.

      1. King Kohli
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 4 months ago

Not saying that just changing the manager will make them world beaters but Jose is badly underperforming with that squad.

I'm sure any decent manager can get at least top 4 with that squad. The issue is that the whole club is a mess right now right from the CEO, scouts, manager, players etc.

There has to be change at all levels and I think it begins with hiring a DOF and forming a strategy on the style of football that needs to be played. Once that is done then you can go about hiring the managers and the required players to play that style.

You would have been better off keeping VvG compared to the state Mou has left you in.

Nice list and Mou managed 3 of them. Didn't recognise De Bruyne's or Salah's world class potential and sold them off for peanuts. Fell out with Hazard.

Has probably never fancied Silva or Aguero not robust enough for him.

Rough – Bellerin letting 2 in then going off injured, Wilson on bench. Lots of 2 pointers, with Wan Bissaka clean sheet sat on my bench.

Smooth – Late Kane (c) assist kept up my record of returning points from captains in every game week so far. Bought Fabianski 4 gameweeks ago and he has been brilliant with them fixture. Doherty and Sterling returning points. Transfer was Barkley out Anderson in.

Wildcarded, so got a better team in the long range.

Only downside was keeping Salah and selling Haz to fund Alonso and Sane. And captaining Auba who has been utterly useless since I got him in.

Son getting 1 pt cameo left Camarasa's points on bench and benching Fabianski for Lossl is a mistake never to be repeated (of course now, next weekend, Lossl saves a pen and gets BAPS and Fabs will get a 1 pointer).

Stupidest WC move was taking Ings out because of his yellow and thinking Deeney against Cardiff was a better option.

But Sane and Snodgrass were plusses for me as is having Alonso, Doherty and Digne now to go with Robbo.

Following the unsympathetic, borderline vicious, mocking that my Wildcard Suicide Squad received on last week's Scoutcast, I'm pleased to report my team bounced back strongly this week - no surprises there I suppose, given this was the week I ought to have Wildcarded all along! 🙄

In fact, my modest 69 pointer was best of all the GW17 scores in the Mods and Cons league 😎

Returns from Sterling, Sané, Kane(c), Eriksen, Doherty, the heroic Jimenez, and Fabianski on Saturday - followed by AWB (Autosub Wan-Bissaka) on Sunday, after an Kolasinac no-show rounded out a happier week.

Fraser, Aubameyang and new recruit Lovren the only blanks.
Camarasa assist locked into my bench the only other negative.

-4 of Salah + Schurrle -> Sterling + Hazard helped push me to 373 overall. Been up and down around the 1k mark for about 5 or 6 weeks so nice to finally push on

51 points, small drop from 60,201 to 60,939!

Smooth: Laca>Kane(c) kind of worked out, not sure who else I'd have captained really without that move. Was scared stiff of missing a Kane haul! I was toying with bringing in Son and keeping Laca so nothing lost there. I just didn't have the confidence to captain Laca so decided to move him on as I had two FT's. Hazard returning again, Doherty, Jimenez.

Rough: Season high 13 points on the bench...WB & Bennett.

        Smooth:
+Wilson & Fraser to Chicharito & Sane for a hit worked out nicely
        +Fabianski, Hazard
        +69pts, OR 12,7K -> 6,3K

        Rough:
        -AWB on bench

67 points - brought in Snodgrass and Alonso for Sigurdsson and Chilwell.

4th straight green arrow and now into top 5k overall.

Sigurdsson and Lacazette > Hazard and Jiminez - 4 paid off handsomely. If only I captained Hazard over Kane. Overall good performance with only Wilson and Schindler blanking

Probably my roughest transfers ever in history: Salah and Lacazette for Sterling and Aguero

Got a bad case of Mancititis at 11.20 and was just staring at the team sheet for ages after. Thankfully it could of been a lot worse with that Sterling goal and an AWB autosub.

Now have to hope for favourable league cup minutes or it's chucka Kun, chucka Kun....and yes I feel for me....

Good week for me, 81, my highest of the season.

Smooth, Jimmy autosub for Brooks, hazard (c)

Rough. Auba doing nothing, I expected plenty and at that point (Chelsea still had a cs) I was hoping for the 100 pointer

        Rough
4 benchings (Wilson, Brooks, Success and Sterling), Auba captain fail again. 40 points, 5th red arrow in a row.

        Smooth
Fabianski 9 pointer - top scorer in 2 of last 3 gameweeks and only decent transfer I've made all season

        54 points

Smooth: Snodgrass delivered for the 2nd week + Sane and Sterling.

        Rough:
Captained Kane and had Sané as vice.
Had Deulofeu (13) as 1st sub and Bennett (6) as 2nd sub with Wilson and Lacazette in my starting lineup starting on the bench and coming on to play 32 and 45 minutes respectively.
The Deulofeu one specifically is really gut wrenching coz i was looking forward to playing him in this fixture a while back and felt like it was his time to shine, put him in the starting XI but forgot to save so that was painful to watch.

Made the following changes with a WC in GW16:

        Alexander-Arnold for van Dijk
        Wan-Bissaka for Balbuena
        Højbjerg for Salah
        Gunnarsson for Richarlison
        Kane for Jiménez
        Boruc for Norris
        Aubameyang for Success
        Button for Boruc

I've worked out if I'd done nothing at all, and captained Salah in GW16, instead of being 107th, I'd now by in 11th!

        Rough: Sold Antonio (8pts)
        Smooth: Bought Sane (10pts)!

        Saturday was very smooth:
        + Sane's brace of assists
        + Sterling's goal from the bench (6pts)
        + Anderson (6pts) assisting Snodgrass (11pts)
+ Patricio (7pts) and Doherty (6pts) clean sheets
        - Only disappointment was Son's single point from the bench

        But Sunday was absolute dog:
        - Alonso (1pt) hitting the post and apparently being otherwise pants
        - Bellerin yellow card and injury (0pts)
        - Captained Aubameyang's 2 appearance points while Lacazette got me a measly assist from another 45 minute appearance (4pts)
        - Rubbing salt in the wound, last week I captained Lacazette's appearance point while Aubameyang got me the measly assist.

Overall, a somewhat underwhelming positive step from 112k to 94k thanks to 56 points.

        Very rough
Got in Son Benched. I was worried about weak bench and rotation.
        Fab 9. Points
        WanB 6 points played Robbo
        Digne 4 points Played
Ings 12 points Kept him through injury
        Total Bench 31 points

Rough: Martial’s 10 minute 1 pointer blocked Ings 13 points coming off my bench.

Smooth: Overall 59 points including a double West Ham clean sheet and Sane (10).

        Rough:

        TAA, Bellerin, Kola owner 🙁
        Auba
        Son

        Smooth:

        AWB off the bench
        Snoddy
        Sane
        Late Kane assist
        Small green arrow

        Rough:
I lost 12 points in the very last minute by benching AWB for Richa and captaining Kane over Haz. I was almost sure about Haz explosion (that's why I brought him in for -4 this week) and Richa 2 pointer but still was not brave enough to do what I want mainly because of the "high ownership" issues.

Smooth: Still scored 79 with my highest GR (10k) since 16-17 season

Smooth - I was in the top 1k for Saturday night. Rough - I was out of the top 1k by Sunday evening. However, I only dropped 2 places overall so within touching distance of doing a Munday (grey dot).
