Hazard haul proves he cannot be ignored with Chelsea fixtures

Eden Hazard hung most premium Fantasy Premier League assets out to dry in Gameweek 17.

He was the star of the show as Chelsea beat Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

We’ve got all the talking points from the Amex Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Goals: Solly March (£5.0m) | Pedro (£6.3m), Eden Hazard (£10.9m)

Assists: Bernardo (£4.2m) | Hazard, Willian (£7.3m)

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) continued to show he cannot be ignored for Fantasy inclusion as he registered his fifth double-figure haul of the season against Brighton. With a goal and five assists in his last four matches, at an average of 7.5 points per game, he has proved his doubters wrong. Despite claims that his chance creation counted little when those around him couldn’t finish, no Premier League player has more assists from Gameweek 14 onwards than him. The Belgian now looks a serious captain candidate on several occasions over Christmas too. Chelsea have very favourable fixtures on the horizon, with Leicester (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (away) and Southampton (home) their next four opponents.

For a second match running, Hazard was used a false-nine with Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) on the bench and Álvaro Morata (£8.5m) left out of the matchday squad entirely. The latter picked up an injury in Chelsea’s Europa League outing on Thursday night but has not been in the form worthy of inclusion anyway. It sounds like manager Maurizio Sarri intends to continue using Hazard as the furthest forward player in his line-up, with Pedro (£6.3m) and Willian (£7.3m) flanking him. That only adds to Hazard’s appeal over the winter period, with Giroud and Morata rumoured to be replaced in the January transfer window.

“I think that, for us, (Hazard) could be very important in this position. He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, he is very able to create spaces. Now I think that, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box.” – Maurizio Sarri

However, Hazard’s owners and anyone looking to sign him for Gameweek 18 will have to track his fitness over the coming days. He was substituted in the second half at the Amex Stadium after taking a knock on the ankle. Sarri is not too concerned but it will be sensible just to see what is said about him in the next Chelsea press conference before making any decisions on him.

“It was only a knock. It shouldn’t be a big problem.” – Maurizio Sarri

While Hazard rewarded those who had shown faith in him, the same was not true for Marcos Alonso (£7.0m). In fact, he came away with his third successive blank away from home, averaging just 0.67 FPL points per game in those fixtures. It could have been a different story as he rattled the Brighton woodwork in the second half with a rasping shot, but minutes later the hosts had wiped out his clean sheet. There will be some Alonso owners considering themselves lucky to have got one point out of him as he could easily have been sent off. The Spaniard probably should have been booked for a foul in the first half, which meant that his yellow card for a push on Anthony Knockaert (£5.4m) in the second would have seen him leave the pitch. However, such was his position when committing that foul on the Seagulls’ forward that it the eyes of many, that incident alone warranted a red card.

“My first impression was that it was a red card. Having seen it again, I do understand that it’s a difficult decision with the pace on the ball and whether Solly would have been right through. I can understand that a bit. I still think there are referees who would have sent him off as the last man. But he should have been on a yellow card anyway. He pulled back Anthony, which is generally always a yellow card. There were two incidents. He should have been on a yellow. If someone pulls someone back on more than one occasion, it should be a yellow.” – Chris Hughton

Sarri might consider rotating one of either Pedro and Willian in the near future. Not least because of the congested nature of the upcoming schedule, but also because they struggled with concentration at times against Brighton. While they both registered attacking returns, there were multiple occasions for each one when they were needlessly caught offside. Hazard showed no such problems, timing his runs through the middle to perfection, especially when he went through to score Chelsea’s second goal.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.8m) came through his injury doubt to start for the second match in a row, and the fifth time in Chelsea’s last six league outings. Ross Barkley (£5.6m), for the fourth time in six Gameweeks, had to settle only for a substitute’s appearance.

It was also a disappointing afternoon for Glenn Murray (£6.6m) owners as he was substituted in the 59th minute, seemingly for tactical reasons. He was replaced by Florin Andone (£5.0m), meaning just a second blank in home matches for the veteran forward.

There was a fifth consecutive start for Pascal Groß (£6.7m) but he continues to offer little in the way of attacking or creative potential. Furthermore, in his latest run in the side, he has completed just one match.

His return has seen Solly March (£5.0m) pushed back to his more natural position of left-winger, and it was him who scored Brighton’s only goal of the game. The Seagulls were in the ascendancy in the second half as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and March was in the right place at the right time when Bernardo (£4.2m) headed back across goal. The midfielder controlled well and smashed the ball over the line from close-range. March has now been involved in five Brighton goals in his last seven outings and created more chances than any of his colleagues against Chelsea. The next two fixtures are tricky for Chris Hughton’s men with Bournemouth (away) and Arsenal (home) up next, but March could present a cheap midfield option for Gameweek 20 when Everton come to the Amex Stadium.

Owners of any Chelsea defensive asset may want to lay the blame at the door of the officials. They were unhappy with the state of Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s (£5.2m) socks as he was preparing to come on and asked him to tape them up before allowing him to take to the field. It was while he was doing this, that Brighton got the ball over the line. However, given that the hosts were enjoying a purple patch, it is unlikely Loftus-Cheek’s presence would have made much difference.

Hughton still seems a fan of rotating in the full-back areas. Martin Montoya (£4.3m) was preferred to Bruno (£4.4m) on Sunday, after missing out on Gameweek 16. However, Bernardo has now made five consecutive starts at left-back in place of Gaëtan Bong (£4.5m). It was Leon Balogun (£4.2m) who filled in for the suspended Shane Duffy (£4.6m) once again, who still has one match left on his current suspension.

Brighton XI (4-1-4-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Balogun, Montoya; March, Stephens, Pröpper, Knockaert (Locadia 83′); Groß (Bissouma 81′); Murray (Andone 59′).

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rudiger, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Kovacic 75′), Jorginho, Kante; Pedro (Loftus-Cheek 66′), Hazard (Giroud 83′), Willian.

I really fear not having Alonso for next GW, especially if Pereira starts at RB for Leicester, very suspect defensively.

Why are people saying hazard is not consistent when he’s one the highest scorers on the game, played considerable less minutes than most, and delivered 16 attacking returns already this season. What more does have to do?

People counting games he didn’t feature in as blanks, and 20 minute Cameos. Funny ol game.

Don’t forget how he destroyed the best defence in the league in a cup game amoungst that.

Probably because they don't or can't afford to own him.

I can't work him into my team right now but don't get me wrong, if I could, he'd be there and he'd be there for a long long time.

Even the 6, to an extent. I was one of those who kept faith through the 1,3,1 period for the promise of a captainable home game against Fulham, only to return a measly assist. That was what convinced me he wasn't worth the money anymore. May reconsider in next few weeks, probably depends on whether Morara worms his way back into the team.

Ah, i see. Well, then it`s a different matter. I do however like #2 just out of a consistency perspective. Jimenez usually delivers something (offensive returns in 10 unique gw`s out of 16), he`s their main man, had his rest. Sanè is heeps better than Martial, playing for the best offensive side in the league - his main worry will be minutes played, but he seems nailed on atleast until Mendy recovers? I also quite like Eriksen, he`s another one of the steady tickers.

The problem is he`s probably never going to replace Salah/Mane/Firmino, so he`s challenging for one of the two spots in cm. Liverpool have many options here, which means he`s usually going to be in and out of the team. He`s a fine player and a decent option, just obviously not going to get 14 points coming off the bench every cameo. He`s also in that awkward price range. I mean, personally i`d much rather have Felipe or Richarlison or Pereyra than big Shaq.

He`s started some games there with Salah up top and Firmino as the #10, mostly against lesser teams to have more players with the ability to open up their defences. Some games he`s started in the midfield 3. Yes, he has been one of the most impactful players this season. My point still stand, i would rather have one of the afforementioned 3 than gamble on Shaquiri, especially when you take fixtures into consideration.

    Chasing Ghosts!

GW 17 - Hazard 13 points. Auba, Kane and Salah total 9 points.
GW16 - Salah 21 points. Auba, Kane and Hazard total 15 points.
GW15 - Kane 12 points. Auba, Hazard and Salah total 11 points.
GW14 - Auba 16 points. Hazard, Salah and Kane total 15 points.

For everyone chasing Eden, who likely chased Salah last week and Kane/Auba previously. The above scores show that they are all great options and in one GW can outscore all the other options put together.

Now assuming everyone has at least one Man City option, I think you need to pick your choice of the other big hitters and stick with them. Chasing round between them clearly isn’t working. Many people taking hits to get Auba in for Hazard and now hits to reverse the move etc. It clearly isn’t going to work. I think picking your choice of the options above and keeping patience with them is the only way you will benefit and get the hauls they will inevitably have. Use those transfers elsewhere in your squad.

Yep agreed. I don’t think anyone can really say who the best options are as they are all great. So it’s about picking your preferred options, like you have and sticking with them.

I personally think Hazard is a great option but I have Salah, Kane, Auba and Sane and I’m happy with them so I won’t consider moving everything about to swap one for Hazard. We can’t have them all unfortunately.

      3. No, I don't buy any single player being essential, but pick the premium player(s) you can afford that also don't affect the balance of the rest of your squad and try not to jump around between them too much.

      1. Sell Fraser
      2. Robbo + Luiz. If you already have Alonso, please keep
      3. Kane the CM is far from essential. Hazard is the only trustworthy route to Chelsea attack, but other premium hauls made people jump off him, so I wouldn't call him essential. I've had him since GW3 though. Sterling still expectedly rotates. Sane is popular now, but replacing him might be troublesome when Mendy returns. Forgotten Man(e) might outperform him between now and your second wildcard, which I guess you'll save for DGWs. Felipe has been over-performing recently. Martial's return to fitness will blow the 7.5M midfield bracket wide open again

There are many options in most price brackets now, unlike early in the season. All have pros and cons. Try being guided by a balance of fixtures and rotation risk

I’m thinking of going Auba to Haz (-4) purely due to the 2 guys above me both having Auba and not having Haz. I have a decent amount of points (60ish) to make up and this feels like a worthwhile punt. The other 2 makeway players are fodder FYI.

    Does that sound reasonable?

I don`t think 60 points at this stage is enough of a deficit to make such a move. Aubameyang is facing Burnley at home next gw. I know Burnley trolled us this gw, and i know Auba trolled us last gw, but still. I would also like to remind you that Arsenal won 5-0 in this fixture in may.

Which player should we discuss and why?

      - Sterling/Sane
      - Why?.. Many considering to bin Sterling but that seems like an accident waiting to happen. If you own one/ both, keep hold in my opinion.

Which team should we discuss and why?

      - Southampton
      - Why?.. Emerging bargain basement players: bednarek 3.9, valery 4.0, armstrong 5.1, ings 5.4

What should our talking point be and why?

      - Man city defensive frailties
      - West Ham assets ticking over (time to double and treble up)
      - The return of hazard?

Player: Alonso-owned by many and being outscored by Luiz, time to downgrade?

Team: Southampton- New manager, new players in starting 11. What players are worth investing in?

Player: Hazard. Is this GW more proof he is a set and forget option? Playing as a false 9 now adding to his appeal. Sarri had great success at Napoli with Mertens and made him a great goalscorer

Team: Spurs. Is having too many attacking options and constant rotation a bad thing for Kane returns? It used to be Alli,Eriksen and Kane as the core of the Spurs attacking unit but having Moura and Lamela fit has disrupted the balance especially with Kane and Alli who are dropping so deep and looking like a shadow of their former selves.

Talking point: Is it best time for 352? Sterling Sane Hazard and Westham midfielder looking outstanding with just one premium forward out of Kane, Auba or even Kun with Jimenez and Wilson offering great value.

Was thinking about this the other day:

Why people captain forwards over midfielders when mids get an extra point per goal and cs point. When (c) it’s an extra 4 points over a forward each Gameweek, all being equal. We’ve seen salah play as central striker lately, sterling as advanced as Aguero would be and hazard as advanced as ever. And we all know come the end of the season the top midfielders usually outscore the top forwards in fpl points.

I agree with the comments below asking for a discussion of Southampton. My initial thoughts are that Ings is a great option, not just because he scored 2 yesterday but also because him starting the game showed he was over his injury and Hasenhuttl's first choice striker. He was good value even when playing under Hughes so I can imagine he will only be even better now! Hasenhuttl also has a strong pedigree, particularly with his teams attacks. I think his brand of high pressing will lead to plenty of goals scored, but also a few conceded too. Hence I'd err towards attacking players in the southampton side, I think Redmond could be worthy of discussion too. At the back I don't think they will keep many clean sheets, but with players available for 4m only, could be lovely 5th defenders in our squads. Bednarek rotates very well with Wan Bissaka until the end of the season now too so could be a nice rotation option there for anyone wanting to liberate cash for elsewhere in their squad.

Talking point - Is this the time for a switch to more of a 3-5-2 structure? If so, would you stick with one premium striker for squad flexability, or invest it all in midfield? Which 5 mids would you choose?

Player: Kane - how do we assess his current position and threat compared to last year?

Team: Southampton - new manager effect and they have alot of cheap options.

Talking point: Every week we discuss the optimal premium players to have and every week it seems to change. Last week it was Kane, Salah and Sterling, now it's probably Hazard, Sterling and Sane. When is the right time to switch up the premium players in our team?

I have two questions in one really:

Post Kane C (relative) fail, I was thinking of going back to Aguero but after Jesus getting a brace and scoring in the CL, it seems like he might be hitting some form. Do you think we'll see a return to the constant rotation we saw between Kun & Jesus in the past when it seemed very literally like Jesus played away and Kun at home? I can take rotation every 4-5 games for Sterling but not constant.

Related... I've always been a big believer in the power midfield and my results over the past few seasons are better playing 5 mids.. All the big name forwards failed to deliver this weekend (an assist from an "in form for shots in the box" Kane vs the league's weakest defense is definitely a fail) and if Jesus is now a factor for City, is it time to go just budget up top with Jimi, Wilson & maybe Mitro and have 5 big hitting midfielders?

Watford are creeping up the season ticker and have 3 midfielders in and about the proverbial 4-5th pricepoint for midfielders.
Docouré-(21 points in last 3 weeks)
Pereyra- (right up there for shots in the box)
Deulofeu- ( can produce the magic)

Are they worth keeping an eye on?

Which player should we discuss and why?
Snodgrass - the next Fraser ?but will he keep his place? Many on here suggested Diangana would keep him out but that has not happened

Which team should we discuss and why?
Spurs - CL related rotation seems to have scared owners off, but their fixture congestion will settle down to the same as other clubs and they do have a great run of fixtures too

What should our talking point be and why?
Captaincy - all of Salah, Hazard & Kane have great fixtures over the next few months and the popular captaincy choice will likely be heavily spread over these prime assets. Do we need to be planning for all 3 now to cover the likely Captains’ hauls in the near future ?

Talking point / Player combined - is Sterling the equivalent of FPL fools gold ?

1 - how will Pep rotate down the right with competition from KdB & Mahrez

2 - he has played down the middle at times to accommodate Mahrez this season and KdB last season ... is he going to play down the middle much more though with both Jesus and Kun fit?

Player: Hazard. I actually removed him to bring in Kane, but I'm already regretting it. He could easily go on a little run over his run of fixtures, so which heavy hitters should we prioritise him over, or are the reasons for getting rid before (carrying knocks, Chelsea' s fluctuating attacking form, better options) still valid?

Team: Southampton. With some bargain basement prices, and a new manager, which Saints options are worth investing in as enablers?

General: Heavy hitters. I think a side can only realistically have 3 of Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Kane, Auba. I'm currently on Kane, Auba, Sterling, but is there a way of bringing in another? Or are there any other players within those players' sides that can work as alternatives? For example, I have Shaquiri instead of Salah, which worked very nicely last week!

For the talking point, I think it should be about the premium attackers. We can only really fit 3 £10mil plus players in our teams with the budget, but with Salah hazard sterling Kane aubameyang and possibly aguero back in the mix, which are the most important ones to have for the Christmas period.

Alonso and Eriksen have wonderful fixtures ahead. I wouldn`t spend 2 transfers on what i consider sideways moves. Digne is cheap and should be easily accessible anyway, and if you want Haz as well i`m sure you have either another expensive mid you can swap for, or an expensive striker you can downgrade.

Hmmm. Both teams have nice fixtures. I'd wait tbh, see how much game time Eriksen gets on Wed

    2 FT, 0.1 ITB

Plan to do over next 2 weeks Laca + Fraser + 1 def out to fit in Haz (with Ings and cheaper def enabling this)

    Should I do:

    A) Alonso —> Luiz
    B) Laporte —> Digne
    C) Something else now so as not to waste FT

    Current team-

    Ryan
    Alonso - Robbo - Laporte
    Sane-(S)terling-Fraser-Rich -Pererya
    Laca - Kane

    Button- Kamara-Bennett-WB

    Thanks!
