Hazard haul proves he cannot be ignored with Chelsea fixtures

Eden Hazard hung most premium Fantasy Premier League assets out to dry in Gameweek 17.

He was the star of the show as Chelsea beat Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

We’ve got all the talking points from the Amex Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Goals: Solly March (£5.0m) | Pedro (£6.3m), Eden Hazard (£10.9m)

Assists: Bernardo (£4.2m) | Hazard, Willian (£7.3m)

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) continued to show he cannot be ignored for Fantasy inclusion as he registered his fifth double-figure haul of the season against Brighton. With a goal and five assists in his last four matches, at an average of 7.5 points per game, he has proved his doubters wrong. Despite claims that his chance creation counted little when those around him couldn’t finish, no Premier League player has more assists from Gameweek 14 onwards than him. The Belgian now looks a serious captain candidate on several occasions over Christmas too. Chelsea have very favourable fixtures on the horizon, with Leicester (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (away) and Southampton (home) their next four opponents.

For a second match running, Hazard was used a false-nine with Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) on the bench and Álvaro Morata (£8.5m) left out of the matchday squad entirely. The latter picked up an injury in Chelsea’s Europa League outing on Thursday night but has not been in the form worthy of inclusion anyway. It sounds like manager Maurizio Sarri intends to continue using Hazard as the furthest forward player in his line-up, with Pedro (£6.3m) and Willian (£7.3m) flanking him. That only adds to Hazard’s appeal over the winter period, with Giroud and Morata rumoured to be replaced in the January transfer window.

“I think that, for us, (Hazard) could be very important in this position. He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, he is very able to create spaces. Now I think that, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box.” – Maurizio Sarri

However, Hazard’s owners and anyone looking to sign him for Gameweek 18 will have to track his fitness over the coming days. He was substituted in the second half at the Amex Stadium after taking a knock on the ankle. Sarri is not too concerned but it will be sensible just to see what is said about him in the next Chelsea press conference before making any decisions on him.

“It was only a knock. It shouldn’t be a big problem.” – Maurizio Sarri

While Hazard rewarded those who had shown faith in him, the same was not true for Marcos Alonso (£7.0m). In fact, he came away with his third successive blank away from home, averaging just 0.67 FPL points per game in those fixtures. It could have been a different story as he rattled the Brighton woodwork in the second half with a rasping shot, but minutes later the hosts had wiped out his clean sheet. There will be some Alonso owners considering themselves lucky to have got one point out of him as he could easily have been sent off. The Spaniard probably should have been booked for a foul in the first half, which meant that his yellow card for a push on Anthony Knockaert (£5.4m) in the second would have seen him leave the pitch. However, such was his position when committing that foul on the Seagulls’ forward that it the eyes of many, that incident alone warranted a red card.

“My first impression was that it was a red card. Having seen it again, I do understand that it’s a difficult decision with the pace on the ball and whether Solly would have been right through. I can understand that a bit. I still think there are referees who would have sent him off as the last man. But he should have been on a yellow card anyway. He pulled back Anthony, which is generally always a yellow card. There were two incidents. He should have been on a yellow. If someone pulls someone back on more than one occasion, it should be a yellow.” – Chris Hughton

Sarri might consider rotating one of either Pedro and Willian in the near future. Not least because of the congested nature of the upcoming schedule, but also because they struggled with concentration at times against Brighton. While they both registered attacking returns, there were multiple occasions for each one when they were needlessly caught offside. Hazard showed no such problems, timing his runs through the middle to perfection, especially when he went through to score Chelsea’s second goal.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.8m) came through his injury doubt to start for the second match in a row, and the fifth time in Chelsea’s last six league outings. Ross Barkley (£5.6m), for the fourth time in six Gameweeks, had to settle only for a substitute’s appearance.

It was also a disappointing afternoon for Glenn Murray (£6.6m) owners as he was substituted in the 59th minute, seemingly for tactical reasons. He was replaced by Florin Andone (£5.0m), meaning just a second blank in home matches for the veteran forward.

There was a fifth consecutive start for Pascal Groß (£6.7m) but he continues to offer little in the way of attacking or creative potential. Furthermore, in his latest run in the side, he has completed just one match.

His return has seen Solly March (£5.0m) pushed back to his more natural position of left-winger, and it was him who scored Brighton’s only goal of the game. The Seagulls were in the ascendancy in the second half as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and March was in the right place at the right time when Bernardo (£4.2m) headed back across goal. The midfielder controlled well and smashed the ball over the line from close-range. March has now been involved in five Brighton goals in his last seven outings and created more chances than any of his colleagues against Chelsea. The next two fixtures are tricky for Chris Hughton’s men with Bournemouth (away) and Arsenal (home) up next, but March could present a cheap midfield option for Gameweek 20 when Everton come to the Amex Stadium.

Owners of any Chelsea defensive asset may want to lay the blame at the door of the officials. They were unhappy with the state of Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s (£5.2m) socks as he was preparing to come on and asked him to tape them up before allowing him to take to the field. It was while he was doing this, that Brighton got the ball over the line. However, given that the hosts were enjoying a purple patch, it is unlikely Loftus-Cheek’s presence would have made much difference.

Hughton still seems a fan of rotating in the full-back areas. Martin Montoya (£4.3m) was preferred to Bruno (£4.4m) on Sunday, after missing out on Gameweek 16. However, Bernardo has now made five consecutive starts at left-back in place of Gaëtan Bong (£4.5m). It was Leon Balogun (£4.2m) who filled in for the suspended Shane Duffy (£4.6m) once again, who still has one match left on his current suspension.

Brighton XI (4-1-4-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Balogun, Montoya; March, Stephens, Pröpper, Knockaert (Locadia 83′); Groß (Bissouma 81′); Murray (Andone 59′).

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rudiger, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Kovacic 75′), Jorginho, Kante; Pedro (Loftus-Cheek 66′), Hazard (Giroud 83′), Willian.

I'd really appreciate some help, lads.

Here's my team, with 2 ft and 1.5 itb

    Fabianski / Patricio

    Alonso / TAA / Doherty / Duffy / Balbuena

Sterling / Sané / Felipe Anderson / Richarlison / Fraser

    Aubameyang / Lacazette / Success

    Should I
    A. Richarlison / Lacazette out, Hazard / Wilson in for free;
    B. Felipe Anderson / Lacazette out, Hazard / Chicharito and 1 mill itb for free;
    C. Something else?

Felipe A is as good as Chicha imo. And Wilson is too short term with next few fixtures. Laca has just as good a fixture and you can easy bench Success. Defence looks too weak so i feel you should upgrade that first

      Thanks @tsparkes10 and @psychobingo

@tsparkes agree they are starters for sure, but i've always felt very insecure even when they start. Get the feeling something's off about those 2.

@psycho For Lacazette's next fixtures - watched the Burnley-Spurs game, and Dyche's team looked like back to last season. Then its Brighton and Liverpool away - tricky fixtures. Think Hazard might be captain material and worth jettisoning Martial?

Honestly, Hazard is an amazing choice ... if you have a hole in your midfield and 11m to spend. Especially if you need a good captain for certain upcoming gameweeks.

    He is, however, not essential.

There are other premium/off-premium choices are similarly good (Sterling, Sané, Salah).

Snodgrass has outscored Hazard over the last few weeks. There is nothing in the fixtures or the form to suggest that this won't continue.

    1. Karan14
      • 8 Years

With the midfielders doing so well there is seriously a case to fit them all in and go cheap up top.

      1. Make Arrows Green Again
        • 7 Years

True. It depends on what is happening in the rest of your team though. If all your defenders are 4.5s or 5s and the downgrade from the Haz to the Snod allows you to upgrade them all to Robertsons, Trippiers and, in due course, Mendys, then that investment might be wiser.

It's the "depends on what is happening in the rest of your team" which, for me, rarely makes any player essential.

Yup agreed. Personally I’ve gone for only one premium defender in Alonso and have Haz, Raz, Sane & Kane.

    Fabianski - Hennesey

Sanè - Salah Fraser - Richarlison - Billing
    Chicharito - Aubameyang - Jimenez

    Bank: 2.0

It’s strange looking at teams at the top of the OR, many are nothing special and quite frankly I wonder how they have such a high rank.

    Then a quick check shows
    1 - the were lucky / clever with their GW1 & 2 picks and clocked up circa 180 - 200 points
    and/or
2 - they have used quite a number of chips

The point is that they are not super human FPL players and are there to be taken down .... 🙂

I clocked up 111 in the first 2 game weeks and feel like I have given the top teams 100 points head start - a good start is so important and it is very hard to catch up.

but, we can take heart by looking up, seeing that the teams above have their issues and understanding that points can be hauled back 🙂

I had better rank than ville ronka early stages but he is a genius.
it really take seasons to learn the game. and of course luck

      A.

Don’t like B because of Pereyra who is a nightmare to own. Too many blanks with a rare/unpredictable haul.

Despite the blanks, I wouldn’t ditch Auba. You bought him for a reason - the fixtures - and the reason is still present. Be patient.

I've never been one to really take any notice of the FPL Cup, for me it's just a nice little detour on the road to that Overall Rank at the end of the season. Way too much luck involved to ever be taken seriously in my book, especially when (my pet hate) you draw an opponent on a TC or Bench Boost or some other chip they've decided to play just for you 😆

I'm sure many of us like myself, especially the way the draw is done, saw off a lesser opponent and can now start looking forward to the draw for Round 2.

However I'm sure there will be tales of woe, last minute autosubs stories, and of course no Cup would be without the odd giant-killing tale here and there, I mean it's what the Cup is for right?

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure the number one in the world would agree right now, who fell at the first hurdle to a team ranked over 650k places below them...
    https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/2575352/event/17 :O 😆

Now that's some giant-killing! Congratulations to Kurti Kurtis for getting through 🙂

So can any of you beat that? Any other giant-killers out there? Did you fall victim to a "dead" team, or did you sail handsomely through? Let's hear your stories both good and bad, surely it can't be any worse than that can it?

    Can it???

Yep, didn't even qualify this year. Of course the qualification round had a Salah hat-trick to feed the million or so dead teams with him as captain!

I feel qualification should be the top 4m players at the end of GW16, not the top 4m in that week. Would also eliminate the people who make teams that week just for the Cup.

Started the GW with an OR of 114 (finished it at 134), but went out of the cup by 6 points to an opponent ranked around 4 million places behind me. Alonso scoring instead of hitting the post would have got me through. Wasn’t a fan of the cup before, and this hasn’t changed my opinion.

For me in this cup I find my luck is terrible usually. I think I’ve qualified each year I’ve played but normally get knocked out with a really decent score. I think last year I had a great gw and was about 30 points above average and lost by a point to another team with a very high score. My team probably would have won against 90+% if teams left had I drawn one of them.

I got lucky this gw and won by 50 points to a “dead team”

I thought it was supposed to be an unseeded random draw, but I'm not certain about that.

I used to suspect that FPL sometimes deliberately paired up teams according to their team names.
One season my team Red Lightning was paired against one called Thunderstruck United.
I don't know whether that was my opponent's original team name or if he changed it when he saw mine.
          (I lost).

Another season, I lost to a dead team containing 4 Chelsea players including triple Chelsea defence, and of course Chelsea then proceeded to keep a clean sheet that game-week.

For GW19 I'm seriously considering a frontline of Jimmy, Ings, Success and bulking up in midfield with Salah, Sterling, Haz, Sane and Richarlison. Would only take two transfers (Auba, Fraser > Ings, Salah) and no hits.

Anyone thinking along the same lines?

Success not good enough, but I guess with those 5 in midfield you don't care as you can only play 2 up top - you'd need 4 top notch defenders though to cover rotation in midfield. Personally though I'd want Anderson in my team and a premium striker instead.

The great thing about this strategy is you can have a power 5 mid, at least 2 premium defenders plus still 3 top scoring budget strikers e.g. Wilson, Jiminez, Ings.

Could rotate front 8 plus allows a very decent first sub.

I've already done Kane and Hojbjerg to Sterling and Ings.

      Gives me front 8 of:

      Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Richarlison, Snodgrass,
      Jiminez, Ings, Mitrovic.

Going to use my WC after GW19.

So Shaqiri (wol, NEW) + Laca (bur, BRI) ->

    A) Sane (CRY, lei) + Ings (hud, WHU)
    B) Sterling (CRY, lei) + Ings (hud, WHU)
    C) Sane (CRY, lei) + Rashford (car, HUD)
    D) Save

So there have been enough logical arguments on here this morning (quite surprising actually ;-)) to convince me to hold with my team and, pending any injuries or team news midweek, have 2FT for next week. I've been flipflopping like a Havaiana on a Brazilian beach so apologies for the multiple changes of heart!
Here's how they line up for GW18:

    1FT 0itb
    Fab
    Laporte, Luiz, Doherty
    Sterling (C), Sané, Fraser, Anderson
    Kane, Auba (v), Wilson

    (Hamer) (Schindler, AWB, Gunnarsson)

The would be to consider Auba, Fraser > Haz, Jimmy for free for GW19, unless performances convince me otherwise.

How does the team look? Agree with cap/ bench choices?

Not sure about that mate - I'd expect a lot more from Auba vs BUR than Kane vs EVE

    Patricio Ryan

    Alonso AWB Robertson Bennett Kola

    Salah Anderson Sterling Fraser Camarasa

    Jiminez Kane Success

1 FT, 0 ITB. Willing to take a hit. What changes should I make? 130k overall and not doing so well in my mini-leagues atm. Need some inspiration :/
