Gameweek 19 Scout Picks – In-form Salah the key man

We have chosen our best XI players for Gameweek 19.

Because of the tight turn-around since Gameweek 18, this line-up was not chosen by our Scout Squad this week.

Instead, it was assembled by a select few within the Fantasy Football Scout editorial team.

We are, as ever, under the £83m budget and line-up in the classic Fantasy formation of 3-4-3.

Goalkeeper

Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) has started the last two Crystal Palace matches filling in for the injured Wayne Hennessey. Given the short space of time between their win at Manchester City and their Boxing Day match, plus the lack of up to date information, we expect the Spaniard to be in net once again in Gameweek 19. Crystal Palace’s chance of a clean sheet this week are fairly strong as they host Cardiff City, who have scored fewer away goals than any other Premier League side this season.

Defenders

Matt Doherty (£5.2m) gets into the Scout Picks based largely on his attacking potential. He has pulled in offensive returns in three of his last four Premier League outings and should benefit playing against the poor Fulham defence on Boxing Day. Furthermore, Fulham have had their struggles going forward recently, while Wolves are typically more defensively sound away from home than at Molineux. Therefore, a double-figure haul for Doherty this week is not entirely out of the question.

Luke Shaw (£4.9m) is selected ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Old Trafford. The Manchester United left-back faces the division’s lowest scorers in the Terriers, while also offering some attacking potential of his own now that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has unshackled the Red Devils.

Dejan Lovren (£4.9m) is chosen as the cover for Liverpool’s hugely impressive defence in Gameweek 19. The Reds have conceded just two league goals at home this season while Newcastle are particularly goal-shy away from home. Only Fulham and Huddersfield have found the net fewer times on their travels this season.

Midfielders

After his recent displays, there was no way we couldn’t include Mohamed Salah (£13.2m). Just one player has recorded more shots on target than the Egyptian in the last four Gameweeks, hence why he has found the net four times in that time. Furthermore, he is comparing very favourably with his 11 chances created too, offering a spread of points. In truth, he looks fully responsible for the functionality of Liverpool’s attack right now. We were initially concerned about his 90-minute spell against Wolves in Gameweek 18, but assessing the form of his colleagues and the five-day gap between that Friday night encounter and Boxing Day’s meeting, we’re confident of a starting role.

We are keeping faith in Eden Hazard (£11.0m) in spite of his blank against Leicester in Gameweek 18. The Chelsea man continues to offer excellent creativity compared to the rest of the league and is also a threat in front of goal. While he will probably be shifted to a wider role against Watford, he should be able to capitalise on the fact that the Hornets have slipped into the whipping boy bracket. In the last four Gameweeks, only Burnley have conceded more shots in their penalty box than Watford.

Paul Pogba (£7.9m) is our chosen representative from the Manchester United ranks for their Gameweek 18 meeting with Huddersfield. We believe he is the most likely to start given the seeming lack of competition for his place and Solskjaer’s clear admiration for his abilities. Only Rashford had more shots than Pogba against Cardiff, while Anthony Martial was the only Red Devil to create more chances. The Frenchman obviously claimed three assists from the trip to South Wales and we expect his influence on this new-look Manchester United team to continue in Gameweek 19.

Richarlison‘s (£7.0m) trip face Burnley fills us with confidence that he will get some attacking returns. As already mentioned, the Clarets remain the division’s worst side for shots allowed in the penalty box, which will give Everton the perfect opportunity to make up for their 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday. We’d expect Richarlison to return to the centre-forward position after playing on the left-wing in Gameweek 18, perfect for him to build on his three attacking returns in his last four.

Forwards

Harry Kane (£12.5m) returns to the Scout Picks on the back of his 15-point haul against Everton. In the last eight Gameweeks, he has averaged 7.13 points per game and has been recording underlying statistics that suggest his form is sustainable. This week he faces a Bournemouth defence that has kept just clean sheets away from home this season and conceded an average of 1.75 goals on their travels in 2018/19. While they have seen a reduction in their goal attempts conceded in the box over the last four Gameweeks since being thrashed by Liverpool, they were up against Brighton in Gameweek 18, who are particularly poor on their travels themselves. Based on the form over the last month or so, we expect Spurs to score heavily again.

Raúl Jiménez (£6.2m) comes back into the Scout Picks in light of Wolves travelling to face Fulham’s defence. He has had 10 shots in the last four Gameweeks, a figure which was somewhat diminished by facing that tough Liverpool defence last time out. Going into that Friday night encounter he ranked joint-third for efforts inside the box. That translated to six attacking returns in Jiménez’s seven Premier League outings prior to the Liverpool game, which is certainly fine form for a Fantasy asset at his price point. With little competition for the centre-forward position at Wolves, it’s hard to see him being benched for this one.

Danny Ings (£5.6m) completes our line-up ahead of Southampton’s Thursday night meeting with West Ham. The forward has been in sensational form since Ralph Hasenhüttl took over the Saints. In his last two matches he has found the net three times and is proving the poster boy for the new manager’s high-pressing tactics. Meanwhile, the Hammers are still struggling for clean sheets, with just three this season.

Substitutes

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) was originally our cover for the Crystal Palace defence, losing out only because the Eagles’ goalkeeper was £0.1m cheaper. Those who own the defender should seriously consider starting him this week as Palace set to host the Premier League’s worst away-day attack in Cardiff.

Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) gets into the Scout Picks as he continues to offer strong underlying statistics. He and his West Ham colleagues were unfortunate not to score against Watford in Gameweek 18 and will be keen to get back to winning ways at Southampton. The Saints are still waiting for their first clean sheet since Gameweek 10.

Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) came close to getting into our starting XI but lost out for budgetary reasons when compared with the other forwards we picked. The youngster should start against Huddersfield with Romelu Lukaku reportedly still out of the fold for personal reasons and has two goals and two assists in his last five Premier League outings.

Community Champion

Due to the quick turnaround between Gameweeks, there is no Community Champion for Gameweek 19.

I always used to freak over rotation. But this year we have so many cheap options for our benches like AWB, Kamara etc I’m more than happy to aim for risky players !

I used too. But not any more.

Its actually quite rare, and 1 point is better than 0.

Sterling came off the bench last week and grabbed a goal. Aubas done it too.

The hauls make up for the odd 1. And hey 1 is only 1 less than 2 right ?!

Reasons to bench Wan-Bissaka over Digne, Doherty, Kolasinac, Jimenez, Ings and Snodgrass:
    - AWB's attacking potential had completely dried up. He has 1 key pass since GW6 (last week) + no goal threat.
    - Recently, his bonus points have dried up. In their last 3 clean sheets, PvA and Sako have gotten bonus over him. Further, if we think Palace will hammer Cardiff, it is likely their attackers will get bonus. Thus AWB's ceiling is 6 points (maybe slightly higher if he nicks bonus).
    - He only has a marginally higher chance of a clean sheet compared to the other options (41% based on G-Whizz's betting odds). This is compared to 38% for Kolasinac, 33% for Doherty and 39% for Digne. But these players all have substantially greater attacking threat which makes up for the slightly more chance of a clean sheet (choosing players on expected value).
    - The attacking players all have ceilings much greater than 6 + all have shown good actual points and underlying stats. However, playing AWB over the attacking options does make more sense than playing him over the defensive options (especially Snodgrass, but personally I'd play Snodgrass).
    - Ownership should not be taken into account in transfer, captaincy and benching decisions as it distorts decision-making. Rather, only expected value should be taken into account.

Someone try and convince me otherwise?

Well he’s still a 5th defender. It’s a great fixture but all defenders in the template have great fixtures. I’m sure we will all play him soon enough 😉

Ridiculous argument. Base your decisions on expected value. I bought him for 4m - who cares if I never play him? I have played him in the past anyway, when my other defenders had bad fixtures, this week they don't...

Well i personally am going to bench Laporte. City have been poor defensively of late and his ceiling is probably even slightly lower than WanB as City score lots of goals so he most likely will never get bonus unless he scores and i think they will concede again to a Vardy special. 5th def is Lowe who has impressively given me -1 over 2 weeks.

          1. JasonG123
            • 10 Years
            5 years, 3 months ago

City have a 45% chance of a clean sheet compared to 41% for Palace. Laporte has actually had 5 shots in the last 2, I'd probably still play him (but close). Think it might be an emotional decision to bench Laporte since you're frustrated with City needlessly conceding.

Its a close decision as you said and my gut seems to just lean Awb. I feel Laporte will still play though as i think one of my starters will be rested

It is extremely close call with those two. Coin toss imo. But perhaps Robbo or someone else will be benched so it won't matter.

Gut says to play AWB, but if I do that, Laporte will give ne his first points first time I bench him. And I do feel that Laporte actually has higher ceiling. He may score from a corner.

      Appreciate the post.

I think you’re overthinking it really. There’s gonna be rotation so it could all be in vain.

Personally it’s almost a coin flip between Doherty Digne AWB etc.

People like Alonso may be rested, and there’s so much luck. Just go with gut.

But yeah AWB isn’t as attacking as he was

      1. JasonG123

I agree it probably won't matter because of rotation.

I think it's a toss up between him and Snoddy (go with your gut there). But Digne, Doherty and Kolasinac should be played over him, no doubt about that.

Yes he is first on my bench, probably about a 60-70% chance that I will require his services this week but who knows maybe my players will be benched and come on for cameos.

Did you watch the Palace vs City match? He was inches away from an assist after some great attacking play and a perfect cross that was headed into the goalpost.

I was at the West Ham vs Watford match so didn't get to see City. That's good that he was close to an assist, but it's still his only 'shot assist' in 12 gameweeks. Snodgrass also whipped in a corner that was headed into the post...

2 FT, 2.4M in the bank, any suggestions on what to do here?

    GKP: Fabianski (Hamer),
DEF: Alonso, Robertson, Wan-Bissaka, (Bennett), (Schindler),
MID: Richarlison, Hazard (V), Sané, Martial, (Fraser),
    FWD: Mitrovic, Ings, Kane (C)

    Thinking either:
    a) Mitro -> Jiminez
    b) Fraser -> Pogba
    c) Sane + Fraser/Mitro -> Salah + Billing/Kamara

Excluding Grant (third keeper) there are only 18 players listed in that list of players at the hotel. They always take a couple of spare players in case of late injuries, etc. Therefore there are two players missing from the hotel.

      He’s not that cheap.

      He’s not that nailed.

      He’s not the main man.

Scout picks don’t chase points 😉

Why no love for Richarlison? Is it just because everyone has him already? I'm torn between Richarlison and pogba atm

No love? He’s in scout picks over son. What more do you want?

I mean in the comments, every question is either about Salah or kane for captain or which UTD player to get, just asking.

Tbf Salah and Kane are levels above Richarlison.

I asked the same question above! I'm torn too, but I might just go for Pobga to jump on the United bandwagon

The reason is he’s been part of the template since GW1. Apart from his suspension.

Everyone owns him. Nobody captains him (apart from some weird week LOL)

So he becomes a “boring” pick that just stops your rank dropping if he hauls.

That’s exactly why. Nobody is excited by him imo!

Plus Digne is the flavour of Everton right now.

I’m definately keeping him for now. I think he’s a great pick and while I’ve got two united players in sacrificing someone like Richarlison is not worth it to me.

Rich all the way. Find another way for united players imo.

I haven't currently got Richarlison, I'm upgrading Kanye to eithrr pogba or Richarlison, i can't make my mind up, swaying towards Richarlson

Haven't seen Everton games too much, but heard something that he might need rest. Not looking too lively atm. But like I said, haven't seen too many games.

Sunderland fans, just saw the documentary, have one question. What did the fans think of Coleman? Majority liked him? Where there fans that didn't?

    Kane (c), Mitrovic

    AWB, Wilson, Balbuena, Button

GTG or should I be benching someone in order to play AWB?

    On WC

    How does it look like?

    9.0-9.1 for keepers
Trippier, Shaw, Luiz, Lovren, Wan Bissaka/Jonny
    Hazard, Sterling, Martial, Son, Hojbjerg
    Kane, Rashford, Kamara.

Bench is going to be thin, I know. Should I balance team little bit more or hope there's not much rotation with main players (Haz, Sterling, Martial, Son, Kane, Rashford)

Somehow our WC teams are very very different. And IDK which is more template! I'm with:

      Fabianski Button

      Lovren Shaw WanB Digne Bednarek

      Sane Pogba Snodgrass Salah Hazard

      Kane Ings Success

Anthony Martial and James Garner both travelled down to the match against Cardiff last week, but were not seen with the rest of the squad as they arrived on Tuesday night.

Although the pair were not spotted by MEN photographers Martial has been known to join up with the squad at a later time, and is not believed to be a doubt for the upcoming fixture.
