Felipe Anderson answers Fantasy sellers with a brace and 15-point haul

The final match of Gameweek 19 marked the halfway point of not just the festive period for Premier League sides but also the 2018/19 season as a whole.

Felipe Anderson registered his fifth double-digit haul of the campaign – that’s more than Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling have managed – as West Ham United secured their third successive away win and moved up to ninth in the table.

We round up the key Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury news from last night’s encounter at St. Mary’s.

Southampton 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) | Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) x2
  • Assists: None | Michail Antonio (£6.8m)

At half-time of the Thursday night encounter on the south coast, those Fantasy managers who ditched Felipe Anderson (£7.3m) ahead of Gameweek 19 – and there were many, 166,386 in all – would have been quietly satisfied, such was the Brazilian’s unremarkable first-half display and relative lack of goal threat.

One solitary shot off target was the sum total of Anderson’s endeavours in a goalless opening 45 minutes, as the two sides on show traded half-chances while demonstrating a lack of cutting edge at the business end of the pitch.

By the hour mark, we had seen three goals, with Anderson the scorer of two of them.

Both were superb strikes, the pick of which was the goal that brought West Ham level at 1-1: collecting the ball after a headed clearance, Anderson caught Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) out at his near post with a rasping shot from a difficult angle just outside the Southampton box.

Anderson then converted a Michail Antonio (£6.8m) through-ball after a swift counter-attack and had two more chances to complete his hat-trick on the break late in the game, being denied by McCarthy on both occasions.

It was a scintillating second-half display from the Brazilian on the left flank and while a fair number of his sellers won’t have been punished this week – the “upgrade” to Paul Pogba (£8.0m) was a popular move ahead of Gameweek 19 – this was a timely reminder that Anderson remains an excellent mid-price midfield option, particularly with a porous Burnley defence to face next and Brighton then visiting east London before FA Cup third round weekend.

No player has scored more Premier League goals than Anderson (seven) since the start of November.

Manuel Pellegrini said of his star midfielder:

I always say that Felipe is just knowing what is the Premier League, in every game he is improving, it is not easy for a midfielder to score seven goals in the middle of the season, I am sure that he will continue improving in the second half.

I don’t know that [he is the best player outside of the top six], I think for me it is more important that the team plays well and that Felipe is playing well in that, in that you always need high individual performers to win. Tonight he played very well but he is not the only one.

Anderson and West Ham’s performance was all-the-more commendable given their injury crisis, with ten senior players – including Javier Hernandez (£6.4m) and the ill Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) – unavailable for this encounter.

Pellegrini indeed could only name six substitutes on the bench for this match, but the lack of competition, at least for now, means security of starts for the likes of Anderson and Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m).

Snodgrass curled a first-half effort just wide of McCarthy’s post but perhaps unsurprisingly didn’t pose the same menace that his more expensive midfield colleague did going forward.

Lucas Perez (£6.2m) wasted an excellent chance midway through the first half on a rare start up front, but the 30-year-old striker didn’t suggest he’d be any long-term threat to Hernandez or Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) upon their recoveries from injury.

The predominantly left-footed Grady Diangana (£4.5m) struggled on the right flank, while Antonio – as good as he was going forward – really struggled with the defensive side of his game at right-back.

Owners of Lukasz Fabianski (£4.7m) would certainly have been concerned about how much space Southampton were getting down the West Ham right in the first half, so the hope for their sakes is that Zabaleta recovers from illness in time for the trip to Turf Moor.

Speaking of the Polish custodian, he was in fantastic form again on Thursday.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper produced a superb save to deny Mario Lemina (£4.8m) in the second half (that stop being somewhat spoiled by an offside flag) and was also blameless for Southampton’s only goal, having made two blocks from Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.3m) before Redmond controversially bundled the ball into the net via his hand.

Redmond and Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) were bright early on in the supporting roles either side of Danny Ings (£5.6m), though that the Saints didn’t test Fabianski once after Anderson’s second strike said much about their lack of killer instinct in front of goal.

Ings, the most-bought budget FPL asset of each of the last two Gameweeks, only had one early shot into the side-netting to show for his efforts before being hooked just after the hour-mark.

Southampton looked susceptible to pace and movement at the back, meanwhile, and this was their ninth straight match without a clean sheet – hope for owners of Manchester City assets ahead of the Citizens’ trip to the south coast on Sunday.

A frustrated Ralph Hasenhuttl said:

If we had the ball the decision was a little bit slower. It’s always about turning forward and playing forward but we played a lot to the side and behind.

We saw a lot of old behaviours today and that’s not what I want to see in my game.

It’s not like one or the other you turn completely off but if you get a bit tired in your mind you fall back in these old manners.

It was intense the last games. We came out of a position where we changed a lot, it was an intense time and I was expecting there would come the time where you feel the fresh is gone and the speed slows down.

Today we made not so much deep runs, we made a lot of times the decision to play back and that was a great difference to the games before against a team which is so physically strong like West Ham where you don’t have time to play back.

If you want to create chances like we did a few times you play quick in the deep and have deep runs and create chances. When we turn back and wait until they are in their shape and they are balanced it is very difficult to score and to create chances.

Southampton XI (3-4-3): McCarthy; Bednarek, Yoshida (Austin 80′), Vestergaard; Valery, Lemina (Elyounoussi 87′), Romeu, Targett; Redmond, Armstrong, Ings (Long 62′).

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski, Antonio, Diop, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Obiang, Rice, Diangana (Carroll 55′), Snodgrass (Masuaku 90′), Felipe Anderson, Pérez (Noble 78′).

When did the January wildcard become a second half of the season wildcard?

Or has it always been this way and I just played it in January...

    What a crazy gameweek

70 points - had FAnderson, Son, Auba,Kane and still a red arrow.

This week really showed the importance of defender points

Worst of all last GW i was thinking of bringing in one of the following

        Digne
        Lovren
        Shaw

        I foolishly choose Shaw

All points are equal, doesn’t matter if they came from your defence, your captain, your autosubs. I don’t see how this gameweek showed the importance of defender points.

Because so many mids/ forwards got points this week it broadly balanced out across peoples teams. The big difference was defenders such as Digne, Lovren, TAA etc with huge hauls compared to other people having city / arsenal/ Chelsea defenders scoring 1 or 2 points.

It’s weird that all of my 11 started, normally Boxing Day fixtures are full of rotation and your bench plys anyway,

Pellers has done an amazing job considering that injury list.

Recently a west ham without Lanzini, Arnautovic and playing Antonio at right back would be whipping boys.

Another week of jam-packed games brings a close to the festive period and welcomes in the new year for FPL managers.

Last gameweek was another high scoring boxing day with minimum rotation - Richarlison and Trippier being the major name to fall victim this week.

However, will this continue? Or will the fickle finger of rotation reap chaos in our XIs again?

City have suddenly looked very beatable following a string of losses - but will this cause more or less rotation as Pep looks to change their fortunes?
Spurs' string of nice games continues this week, but with fixtures coming thick and fast and plenty of options available to Poch, rotation looks a distinct possibility.
At United, Lukaku, Martial and Sanchez are all looking to return to the starting lineup, causing some uncertainty for FPL managers.

Which players in your team are you worried about over the next week?

Which big names do you think will be suprise exclusions in the next 2 weeks?

Sane or sterling just to ruin the lives of us double city owners over this recent drought even further. Can’t help but think Auba’s time must be up having played 90 in all of these matches but that’s just speculation

        Exact same worries.

Sane and Sterling double has really stung the last couple weeks, especially with their potential to hurt the sellers this week. Fear Sterling will miss out this week so he's gone from my team already. Sane's gametime is starting to really build up, but Pep seems happy to keep playing him - hopefully he can make it to the FA Cup games without a rest, but that would be a big suprise.

This week a playing bench caused me nothing but pain - 25 points from 2 have been taunting me!

I agree though - keeping the option open to take some risks with players that may be rotate is an important decision. Plus, allows managers to deal with weeks with some tougher fixtures, like this gameweek.

Who were they though? Sometimes you get bench points that were truly unexpected so can't really feel too bad about them.
I had Luiz on bench few games back, when he scored vs City and kept a CS but wasn't a poor move to have benched a defender in that fixture even in hindsight

Will be interesting to see who starts this week for OGS and who go on to be his first choice.

Plenty of competition over places now, some bandwagons might get derailed.

Man City attack - for me the fear of who is/is not playing now out weighs the fear of hauls. Got too tired of it...

Rashford I think will get one more start and then might need to go.

Llorente surely gets some minutes soon and with other midfielders coming back I just hope Kane gets an hour. No way will I captain though, Salah has to be the safe choice I feel.

Really worried about Sane and will definitely move him next week to hazard. Might have done so this week but contemplating whether a hit is worth it. A little bit concerned about Kane not starting the Cardiff game as well. Looks a great cap option so would be great if je doesn't get 90 minutes against Wolves

Surprise exclusions- think auba misses the Fulham game

For this week i'm worried about Alonso and Sane. Pretty positive that Rashford will start but might be subbed off early.
Will probably ditch either Sane or Rashford for the following GW. Perhaps even both.

Considering this possibility also. Sane to Hazard who plays So'ton looks like a decent move, but Haz also might be rested then... ...hmm... Taking hits for this kind of transfers is risky business. And finding decent replacement for Rashford is a problem also.

          Felipe Anderson.

Look at his minutes this season, then look who they're playing. If Arnie is back I don't think he plays, but there's a real chance that they don't have the players available to rest him....

how would you redistribute the fund in this front 8? Feels not enough security if one of my starter don't start.
        Will play 442 usually

        Hazard Salah Son Pogba Masuaku
        Kamara Kane Jimenez

Been holding onto Vertonghen hoping he would play but enough is enough.

Worth trading to TAA even though they have two poor fixtures?

Was hoping no Liverpool around this period would help but my rank has been plummeting.

Have AWB, Doherty, Alonso and Digne in defence.

I can see city tearing the defence apart (especially after last two city games). Auba will cause big problems for Lovren too.

I would wait until after those two fixtures before bringing in Trent

Here's my lot. Don't know what to do here.

        2 FT – 0.2 ITB

        Fab – Hamer
        Robbo – Doherty – Kola – Digne – AWB
        Hazard – Sane – Son – Martial – Gunnarson
        Kane – Auba – Kamara

        1) Kola > TAA
        2) Hamer > Speroni (0.1 to the bank)
        3) Somethin else?

        Thanks.

        Salah won't be rested

Kane maybe rested for 1 out of the 2

Sterling looking more than likely to be dropped rather than rested this weekend but will start v Liverpool you'd like to think

Hazard will play both games I reckon but may get taken off early in 1 of the 2

Rashford will start in bench v Newcastle with Lukaku and Sanchez making their returns

Surely you don't take a hit to bring in TAA Ahead of arsenal and mci. As for Salah, he's good, but I wouldn't get him for a hit Ahead of those fixtures either. Get him for free after mci.

That was the original plan but I'm getting impatient and rank is plummeting without him. TAA I could leave but if Balbuena doesn't start I'll have to play Doherty at Spurs. TAA could make back a -4 in that game.

In context of who could be available:

"Hopefully the front three with Romelu (Lukaku), Alexis (Sanchez) and Anthony (Martial)," he told MUTV. "That’s not a bad front three to have ready. When you’re 2-0 up 3-0 up if you can put players with pace on that makes a difference. When you score three at home but you know you have three lads waiting to get on that’s great."

So he's saying that front 3 could be available, not that they're (necessarily) his main 3 vs others

                      I think so yes.

                      Martial Sanchez Lingard to start.

Lukaku Rash on bench and will come in.

                      Just a guess

Not sure Rash is the one to miss out eventually, might as well be Lingard

Cant see it...Ole just confirmed in presser that Lukaku, Martial and Sanchez did " did some light training yesterday" this suggest that not quite ready to return.

Rashford is a certainty to start. More likely lukaku on the bench

On a wildcard, who should i go for in the cheap defender category?

                    Already got:

Foster, Robertson, Digne, Doherty (Speroni, Peltier)

                    a. Kiko
                    b Bednarek
                    c. Kyle Walker-Peters
                    d. Other suggestions, max prize 4.3 million

My biggest takeaway from the season so far was a Dominoes Mega Mix deal

                    Still regret it.

My front line is Wilson, Rashford and Chicharito. I have 0.8 itb. Who to get rid first, and for who? Thanks!

Think you first need to wait on Chich news/see what happens when Lukaku/Sanchez are back re. Rashford
Wilson form isn't great but still better than Rashford/Chich if they don't play

If you're willing to go without Salah, it's pretty nice but be prepared for Sterling's benching. I'd try to get Salah instead of Sterling maybe? Lovren to Bednarek and some other way maybe?

Yeah Salah is the main worry here. Wanted to see what I could get. Like having a strong 5 mid
