The Complete Guide to our FPL Gameweek 20 tips and advice

Heading into the festive period of fixtures our Scoutcast panel admitted to being “terrified” about the players they don’t own. So far it has proved prophetic as many FPL managers will have found themselves cowering behind their Turkey dinners in fear as Christmas turns into a nightmare.

In Gameweek 18 there wasn’t a single green arrow to be found amongst The Great and The Good and, as Greyhead reports, life didn’t get much better in Gameweek 19 with only four green arrows in total.

It seems they are “arguing amongst themselves as to who are the best big hitters. In Gameweek 18 whilst Ville Rönkä bought Aubameyang (£11.5m) Torres Magic was busy selling him. Even the previous untouchable Salah (£13.2m) has been kicked out of the template but then come back a Gameweek later.

The Cisco Kid attempted to offer some guidance with an article on the 5 FPL Mistakes to Avoid this Christmas. They are worth repeating here:

  1. Avoid Taking Unnecessary Hits
  2. Don’t Remove Heavy Hitters for a Hit
  3. Don’t Try to Read the Tea Leaves
  4. Don’t Miss a Deadline
  5. Avoid Judging Your Decisions with Hindsight

The last point was picked up on by Fusen, calling it “the key to FPL sanity and rationality” remarking that “the game has HUGE amounts of luck.” Whilst it is undeniable that luck plays a huge part, it doesn’t necessarily explain why some managers are consistently more successful than others.

One such manager is Career Hall of Fame number one Jay Egersdorff, who last week neatly encapsulated how to do well at the game:

Simple definition is you use your skill in an attempt to maximise your luck.

So why have managers been so unlucky recently and is it down to a lack of skill?

One reason is benching the wrong defender. However as Adam Hopcroft pointed out – Digne’s (£5.1m) two goals came from two shots for a combined xG of 0.09, “Owners that benched him (me included) don’t be too hard on yourselves 😪”

Another reason is disappointing returns from a reinvigorated Manchester United. Despite the clamour for Manchester United assets following their 5-1 win away at Cardiff, most apart from 10.1% owned Paul Pogba (£8.1m) failed to deliver. Illness was blamed for the absence of Anthony Martial (£7.3m), who was transferred in by 275,247 disappointed managers ahead of the deadline. It seems living close to the Lowry Hotel does not mean he will join up with the squad late.

The pain of Martial’s absence was compounded on Thursday night. West Ham’s Felipe Anderson (£7.3m), sold by 166,386 FPL managers, scored two goals for a 15 -point haul in the final kick-off of the Gameweek.

Finally, City have lost three of their last four matches – a situation that given their scintillating form this season wasn’t anticipated. Many are at a loss to explain it with Guardiola stating that he needs to “change the dynamic”.

However, perhaps it is worth being patient. Hutch_James revealed in his Wisdom of the Crowd article yesterday that City should be the highest scorers of the Gameweek with a predicted 2.69 goals.

Yet the famously patient Ville Rönkä appears to have sold Sterling (£11.4m) after owning him for a mere two Gameweeks. It’s rare for Finland’s most famous FPL manager to perform such an abrupt volte-face, and perhaps offers some comfort to us mortals who also held onto Sterling. According to FPL Transfer Spy, the player he has replaced him with is Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (£11.1m).

Hazard is not a player to make it into our Gameweek 20 Scout Picks. Compiled by the Fantasy Football Scout editorial team due to the short turn-around, the wealth of assets on offer in midfield is reflected with a 3-5-2 formation. Can they match the impressive 85 points delivered by Gameweek 19’s selection?

The important question of captaincy is once again tackled by the excellent Captain Sensible article. Neale (aka Skonto Rigga), who put the article together, appeared alongside Joe in his regular video to discuss the best captaincy option for FPL Gameweek 20.

The pair were also on hand to cover the team news in their round-up of all the press conferences, with Neale adding an article to the site. It’s important to note that Manchester City are holding their press conference today, and that the press embargo on West Ham’s team news is set to be lifted at 1:30pm – half an hour ahead of the deadline. Check the website and FFS twitter account for last-minute updates.

I'm holding Sterling (for now at least) and I think I'd do the same if I was a Sane owner. The move to double on United and go for Martial is tempting but feels short-term as I imagine there will be rotation for their visit to Newcastle. I guess if Martial was 100% for BOU it might be different.

I'm not confident on a Sterling start, unless Pep opts for wing-backs and tucks him alongside Aguero/Jesus - which is a real possibility given that he'll probably want to protect Danillo as his only defensive left-back option vs Liverpool.

Getting rid of my one City attacking asset feels like stretching for a green arrow in the short term which could prove damaging over a longer spell. I think I'd rather try to absorb the lack of minutes, rely on others to help my GW20 score (I'm looking at you Alonso and Mitrovic), and give Pep time to sort this out.

Sterling now has a 13.4% ownership but is still the 4th highest scoring player in the game, even after dropping minutes and being glued to the right flank in his last two. I'm going to see what Pep gets from him and City in the next two and then assess again over the FA Cup break.

Yeah...I think I'm going to give in, especially as I have Sane as well. It's the doubt over game time that's the most annoying. Because if I knew he'd play I would 100% keep Raheem.

Very probably. However, Sterling is the only one of the wide players available to Pep who can supplement the central striker. He can tuck in and get into goalscoring positions more efficiently and effectively than Sane and Mahrez.

I think that will always work in his favour, particularly when Pep is facing a back five as he is vs Southampton. I do wonder whether he'll go like for like, go with 3-5-2 and start Sterling up with Aguero or Jesus. That would see Mahrez in the midfield three with one of Silva/KDB and Zinchenko and Walker wing-backs. Sane could even be used at LWB in that scenario.

I just don't think he will start/risk Danillo given that he's his only option at LB for Liverpool really. I can't see Zinchenko starting in that game. So if Zinchenko starts at Southampton, it could be as a LWB given that Pep knows that Saints will line up in that formation.

Yep. The Delph suspension has really thrown a spanner in the works for Pep. I'm worried how it will impact Sane.

I can see Mahrez on the right and Jesus starting and playing that all-action 6 yard box role that Sterling does so well.

Of course, I should say that I already have Pogba, Hazard and Salah (which cheap strikers) so I guess sticking by Sterling or Sane (if I had him) is far easier to do. It would probably be very different if I was lacking those three. I guess that's one advantage of the cheap forward line, it gives me the option to show more faith in heavy-hitters in midfield.

Of course, that could also prove my downfall 😉

Yeah, see above. I do wonder if he'll go with this.

He knows Saints will lineup like this and that could mean Pep seems benefit for two central strikers and also the wing-backs help solve his lack of a LB option, whilst also giving him extra cover in central areas to help make up for Fern's absence.

It's all speculation. Pep might shed some light in a bit, though I doubt it.

Fascinating to see City and Pep under pressure though. It's a real test of his tactics and selection now.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold both. But I think shedding all cover of the City attack is a risk unless you're confident of a route back. I know from experience that when I lose a heavy-hitter, it takes real resolve to get them back, even when it's clear it was an error. I naturally back the decision before admitting an error.

If I sell Sterling now, he's gone, probably for a prolonged spell. That's fine if City continue to struggle. I'm not sure I want to back that option just yet. Like I say, I'll look again after Liverpool and asses what Pep gets over these next two matches.

          Yeah.
Kun Aguero in for Kane after few gamweeks or Sterling in for Son is my plan if City starts putting 4,5 past teams again.
I really hope Kun gets his act together as midfield has many great options right now.

I'm going with that today. I got Shaw to give me the option of 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 as I know my cheap strikers have testing fixtures over this next spell. I'll probably use 4-5-1 in GW21.

I'm so jealous of you - my team was identical but I am 0.1 off being able to afford Kane over Auba!

Did that a few weeks ago and wish I hadn't.
Not consistent at taking good pens it seems and doesn't get in the box as much as Rich.

    Lössl
    Alonso Doherty Digne Kiko
    Salah Haz Sane
    Kane Rashford Jimenez

    Hamer Kolasinac Gunnarson Hojbjerg

    Best option?

    A) Kola, Stephens to TAA, Gibbs-White
    B) Kola, Rashford, Stephens to TAA, Richarlison, Kamara

GTG with this WC squad? 1.7 ITB

    Alisson (Speroni)
    TAA Digne Holebas (AWB Bednarek)
    Hazard Son Pogba Rich FAnderson
    Kane Rashford (Kamara)

Decided Salah gave me better value elsewhere...scary as that feels.

Ok! Got it down to theese two, really not like going without Felipe A but it hurts the team quite a bit getting him in... leaning towards alt 1. What would you choose? Thanks!

      Alt 1: Alisson - Speroni
      AWB - Digne - Robertson - (Doherty - Bednarek)
      Deulofeu - Pogba - Hazard - Salah - Richarlison
      Mitrovic - Kane - (Kamara)

      Alt 2: FOSTER - Speroni
      AWB - Digne - TAA - (Doherty - Bednarek)
      FELIPE A - Pogba - Hazard - Salah - Richarlison
      RASHFORD - Kane - (Kamara)
