Pochettino suggests fatigue could be an issue as Spurs crash to defeat

A potentially important result in the Premier League title race was also a significant one for Fantasy managers, as Wolves produced an impressive second-half display to defeat Spurs on their own turf.

There were goals and assists from well-owned FPL options on both sides but as we will discuss, there will be a significant number of Matt Doherty and Raul Jimenez owners who would have been displeased to see their assets bank attacking returns.

We’ll round up the key Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury news from a shock away win at Wembley.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Harry Kane (£12.6m) | Willy Boly (£4.6m), Raul Jimenez (£6.3m), Helder Costa (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Son Heung-min (£8.8m) | Joao Moutinho (£5.2m), Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m), Matt Doherty (£5.2m)

Harry Kane (£12.6m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) continued their impressive sequence of attacking returns on Saturday afternoon but that was as good as it got for a lethargic Spurs, whose run of five straight league wins was brought to a juddering halt.

Even with the score at 1-0 in Spurs’ favour, with just 20 minutes to go, all was not well.

Wolves have produced some impressive away performances this season, at West Ham, Arsenal and Manchester United particularly, and they were again admirably stubborn in this contest, restricting Spurs to only shots from distance.

As the graphic below illustrates, all but one of Spurs’ ten attempts on goal came from outside the Wolves area (the green dots are efforts on target), with their only shot from inside the box being a blocked Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) attempt from an acute angle:

Spurs’ goal indeed came from distance, a superb Kane strike from 25 yards that put the Lilywhites 1-0 up on 21 minutes.

The hosts’ only other two attempts on target also came from way out: a Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) free-kick forcing a comfortable save from Rui Patricio (£4.6m) and another Eriksen strike being pushed onto the bar and over by the Portuguese shot-stopper.

Kane didn’t register a single penalty box touch in this game, dropping deeper than ever to get involved and being booked for simulation as frustration mounted, while all four of Son’s shots on goal came from outside the box – none hitting the target.

Son was the brightest spark for Spurs early on and sent one 25-year effort just wide of Patricio’s post, with the Korean also registering 20 more touches in the final third than Kane over the course of the match as the England striker roamed around in central midfield.

His and Spurs’ goal threat evaporated after the break, though, with the Lilywhites not registering a single shot in the second half.

Wolves deserve every credit for their smothering performance at the back but that last statistic underlines just how jaded Spurs looked in this game. Perhaps as much we can take from today from a Spurs point of view is that it was simply one match too far: five of their six midfielders/forwards had started all three of their fixtures over Christmas, with a rusty-looking Dele Alli (£8.9m) joining that quintet in this encounter after his return from a hamstring injury.

Mauricio Pochettino seemed to agree when asked if fatigue was a factor in his post-match presser:

Maybe, maybe yes. We conceded the first goal and in the last 20 minutes it was tough for the team to find energy to be competitive or to try to win the game. Of course, we started to feel it a few minutes before we conceded which is why we were ready to add a fresh player like Oliver Skipp to help the team and we couldn’t because we conceded in the action before we were going to make the change.

Yes, I think the game was under control in the first half, maybe it was easier than we expected in the first half to dominate the game and to play so easily. They played so deep, chasing us and we didn’t concede one chance.

But in the second half maybe we started to feel that the game was over and when you start to feel the game is over and you play in the way that you play, you start to decide in a wrong way. We started to play too many long balls and then it was difficult to recover the ball and to play more with your heart than your head and we started to expend a lot of energy. Then when you need the energy in the end you miss that.

We can perhaps expect changes for the trip to Cardiff on New Year’s Day, then, with the likes of Lucas Moura (£6.9m), Oliver Skipp (£4.5m) and – who knows – maybe even Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) returning to the first-team fold in Gameweek 21.

Erik Lamela (£6.2m), incidentally, missed this match after picking up a calf injury.

All credit to Wolves, though, who defended stoutly in the first half without posing any kind of attacking threat.

Their seemingly superior fitness levels showed late in the game and the counter-attacks that had fizzled out in the opening 45 minutes became more potent after the interval, with Raul Jimenez (£6.3m) and Helder Costa (£4.8m) sealing the win for the visitors with two strikes on the break.

Nuno Espirito Santo discussed his side’s performance in his post-match interview:

We played a very good game in the second half, but even in the first half we were organised. Tottenham have a lot of qualities, they have talent, they have ability which creates a lot of problems, so we had to stay with them, stay balanced.

In the first half, I felt we stayed in the game, but the game changed in the second half, in our favour. We had the ball more, and when we have the ball more we can manage the game better.

We had possession, we had chances, we had goals, and the boys worked very hard, were very organised against a very good Tottenham side.

We had a lot of belief after the equaliser, but we cannot rely [on one goal], we want more, we want to improve, I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them.

I told them [at half-time] to keep it the same, stay with them and do enough to stay in the game. Let’s have the ball and play, play to win. The way we have been playing for more than a year-and-a-half now.

Matt Doherty (£5.2m) supplied the assist for Wolves’ third goal to bank his fourth attacking return in seven Gameweeks, but many of the Irish wing-back’s Fantasy owners won’t see the points from their gung-ho defensive asset: Doherty was the second-most-benched FPL asset of Gameweek 20 and 48.6% of his owners didn’t line up with Doherty in their initial starting XI.

Four of the 15 other most-benched FPL assets of this Gameweek were also Wolves players, including Jimenez, who walked away with maximum bonus from this match.

While Spurs struggled to create anything in the opposition 18-yard box, Wolves had nine attempts – including blocked efforts from Doherty and Jimenez and Willy Boly‘s (£4.6m) headed equaliser – in the Spurs area.

Three of Wolves’ four shots on target found the back of the net and Santo was delighted with his side’s ruthless streak in front of goal:

Today we were clinical. That was the difference, no doubts about it. Against Tottenham and these kinds of teams you have to be clinical and take the chances that you have. If not, you will be punished.

Jimenez led the line superbly for Wolves and his FPL stock rises by the week: the Mexican striker has been involved in over half of Wolves’ 23 league goals this season and his side now enjoy three home fixtures in the next four Gameweeks.

Doherty remains as adventurous as ever, meanwhile, with Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.2m) the only one of his team-mates to record more final third touches in this encounter.

The lively Adama Traore (£5.2m) was substituted just before the hour-mark with what appeared to be a minor hamstring strain, though Santo said the injury was “nothing special” in his post-match press conference.

Spurs XI (4-3-1-2): Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies; Sissoko, Winks, Eriksen; Dele (Moura 68′); Son, Kane.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Dendoncker (Moutinho 68′), Neves, Jonny; Cavaleiro (Gibbs-White 85′), Traore (Helder Costa 59′), Jimenez.

I am traveling, so didn’t see it. Is Digne going to be suspended for his incident with Button after the match?

Don't think it even get a mention on MOTD, whatever it was. They showed Mane grabbing Lichtsteiner's neck but I doubt anything will even happen about that.

I have always wondered about this "rest" idea and thinks it's vastly exaggerated by most of us.... If it's part of injury recovery.. OK , I get it, but these Liverpool players and Auba and Kane weren't even sweating at the end of reg. I sweat more gardening and mowing the lawn for 90 minutes (although I don't get a 20 minute break inter-session.). These highly paid professionals have such great access to recovery techniques... I think REST (without an injury) if the next game is three days hence is a shibboleth.
Time for a physio to write an article.

There is that factor, but the other half of its traveling, making sure they get a decent nights sleep.

Part of the benefit of rest is avoiding an injury though. How many times have we seen a player limp off with a hamstring during a match? If you sit out for 60-90 minutes you reduce the risk of that happening.

Mainly to avoid injury but training daily and playing a competitive match every 3 days takes its toll, even on top athletes... at the top of the game, playing in the prem, even the smallest of margins make a massive difference

Would you consider playing 442? Not suggesting for a second that my team is spot on (it’s not) but the way I managed to get them in was by switching formation which left me with:

          Button / Hamer

          TAA / Digne / Holebas / Wan B / Bennett

          Salah / Hazard / Anderson / Pogba / Masuaka

          Kane / Auba / Kamara

Something similar could work for you?

It's a nice team, I guess there's the risk of having TAA over Robertson and having two 4.0 keepers.

Already have Hazard, Richarlison and Kane so it came down to Salah/Brooks/Ings vs Mane/Pogba/Jimenez.

Would've been great to have the wildcard 🙁

Is the female commentator always last on match of the day? How does that work, logistically?

    A) They put her on a game that they will place at the end of the programme, regardless of the result

    B) She records the commentary after the match, specifically for the MotD highlights

    C) There are multiple female commentators who sound the same (perhaps triplets) covering multiple games, along with their male counterparts. The BBC choose one match to put at the end of the programme, substituting the male commentator for the female commentator

    D) She is not always at the end of the programme

Interesting. I believe all the other matches have a suggested pre-planned order, but that order is shifted around after the matches are complete. It's a bit disrepectful to the teams in the final highlights reel to concrete them as the final match on the programme, but I'll get over it.

Did I use the buzzword "female". I'm so sorry.

I think we have a right (or even responsibility?) as citizens to know how the state-run media is treating and representing our fellow citizens. Not sure what your problem is. Certainly don't think you should attempt to shut down conversation simply because an issue is contentious and you see a buzzword that triggers you. Try to join the conversation, or just scroll by.

For what it's worth, I think it's sexist to have a rule (if they do) that the last billed game on MotD should have a female commentator.

It's disrespectful to women to secure a commentator the worst spot on the show based on her sex (male commentators can be put on poor matches, but they aren't secured any specific spot, since the schedule is flexible, and not based on their sex anyway).

It's also disrespectful to men, since it makes it clear her spot exists to fulfill a quota. If she was given any poor game, regardless of programming schedule, then she would be treated equally. She would have the oportunity to have a higher billing based on flexible scheduling (exciting matches boosted up the running order), and based on on her personal performance (to secure higher-profile matches). But actually it's clear that she's only employed because there is an opening for "female commentator" which denies men an opportunity.

I would much prefer the BBC to let the games of their female commentator(s) be scheduled according to the same rules they use for the other games (i.e. not pre-defined and set in concrete simply due to their sex).

If you disagree. That is okay.
        Have a nice evening.

My comment was also a genuine (though somewhat jokey) enquiry into the logistics, since I'm interested in TV and film production, as well as in Match of the Day protocol, football, and lots of stuff. Curiosity innit

Alan Green was always commentating on the last game. I think it’s disgracefu just because he’s from Northern Ireland and is a bit fat. Now they’ve moved on to sexism. What next I wonder? I blame brexit.

I recognise that your comment is tongue in cheek, but I don't know how serious you are about the Alan Green comment. Was he really always on last? I'm guesing that's not true, which makes the issue of putting women last different, but maybe you're telling the truth. I haven't been watching MotD for many years.

I'll just point out that, although I wrote quite a bit, it doesn't mean that I think this is the biggest issue in the world right now. I'm just interested.

Fair enough. Perhaps he would have simply been given a poor fixture, with other commentators getting better gigs, and so he was on last or nearly last most weeks? Or maybe they didn't have the same flexible schedule back then?

It would be a bit dodgy if they had to employ a Northern Irish person for diversity and so they plopped him last on the shedule every week, for sure. Maybe he was there on merit, but just not as popular or good as the others (which could be thanks to a racist public!)?

Anyway, times are changing, and we wouldn't stand for racism now, and I think BBC would actively try to avoid the controversy in favour of mild progressiveness (which incidentally is probably what they're trying to do by employing a female commentator in the first place - a compromise between having female representation and.... not having it.... put her at the end).

With that performance today, I would leave the club and emery's player management so far is trash imo.

Ramsey also likely to leave.(longest serving arsenal player presently can't even start 60% of games) Emery should be spanked. Good he got one today

Yeah everyone was praising him earlier in the season for not being afraid to make changes but always knew it would backfire. There's a reason why most top managers don't make changes at half time; they get the team right in the first place. And if it hasn't worked so far it doesn't mean anything needs changing at only half time.

I thought they played alright tbh. Remove the defensive calamities and it was a competitive game. Didn’t Arsenal have 52% possession?

But yeah, why let signs of improvement get in the way of a moan, right?

Good point buddy. You simply summarised all that is happening at arsenal football club. Emery needs to know that he can't use that approach all the time and a player like Ramsey(club player) deserves whatever contract he asked for regardless of his potential to his tactics.

They’re not even his players. How he can even be judged yet is beyond me.

Injuries at CB, FB and a lack of industry in midfield was always going to result in a defeat to Liverpool.

Ramsey is not a bad footballer buddy. There are certain players that grew up in a club you know that right? These players know the core or the fundamental basis of the club whether they fit into the new system or not. You don't just flush them out of the club and in Ramsey's case. I think he deserves to start most games.

It is like you go to Utd and sell Ryan Giggs because he does not fit into your tactics or approach or whatever. That's dumb and stupd.

I doubt he’ll go anywhere. He’s just signed a new contract at £300k a week which no club in their right mind would match. That means a massive pay off and a loss for the club. There’s a good chance Emery will be sacked at the end of the season so I’d imagine the board will want to wait and see if the new manager can try and get the best out of him before they finally pull the plug on his Arsenal career.

So frustrating. I was planning on doing Sterling > Salah and Alonso > TAA after the City - Liverpool game next week. Had 0.2 ITB over what I needed in case of drops/rises

But Alonso dropped last night; Sterling is going to drop tonight and Salah is going to rise tonight meaning I'm going to be priced out by 0.1 🙁

I think Alonso + Sterling will do better than TAA + Salah next week mostly cause of Alonso's great fixture and TAA's bad one. I do have to take a 4 point hit regardless if I did it this week or next week now (would have to find another downgrade somewhere like a GK transfer)

So... wait or go for it now?

Maybe he does well tomorrow and people suddenly want to bring him back in with how good their fixtures are.
