Aubameyang bounces back but misses out on bonus

Arsenal bounced back immediately from their humiliating defeat at Liverpool on New Year’s Day.

The Gunners recorded a big 4-1 win over Fulham with attacking returns from several Fantasy Premier League usuals.

That game is the subject of our latest Scout Notes article.

Arsenal 4-1 Fulham

Goals: Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m), Aaron Ramsey (£7.2m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) | Aboubakar Kamara (£4.4m)

Assists: Alex Iwobi (£5.4m), Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m), Aubameyang, Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.1m) | Ryan Sessegnon (£6.0m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) bounced back to form as Arsenal were deserved 4-1 winners over Fulham on New Year’s Day. It took some time for the forward to get his returns but as the game’s top shooter in the penalty box, and the player with the most touches there, it was fitting that he ended up on the scoresheet. It was the type of performance that his owners would have wanted after his blank at Anfield and with West Ham his next opponents. His goal and assist gave Aubameyang a nine-point haul, which most of those who captained him would probably be happy with. However, it was another match where the former Borussia Dortmund man missed close-range chances that he really should have buried, just two of his six shots were on target in the end. These spurned opportunities appear to have cost Aubameyang a shot at any bonus points.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) got his first goal since the Gameweek 14 win over Tottenham, but once again was unable to complete the outing. The Frenchman also deserved to get attacking returns as Aubameyang was the only player at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday afternoon who had more touches in the box or more shots there than Lacazette. However, his struggles to live up to his price-tag continued as he went a 13th consecutive Gameweek without double-digit returns. While he has been relatively consistent in that time, averaging 3.8 points per appearance, it’s just not quite good enough to be forking out over £9m for, especially if he is not completing games he starts. That is something some Arsenal fans are a little frustrated by, as they booed his substitution against Fulham on Tuesday.

“I understand the supporters, but I need to do my work. Tactically we are thinking we need to change for more balance. We know Seri well, we need a player close to him, not let him play with the ball too easily. But for me today Lacazette helped us.” – Unai Emery

Perhaps offering a value route into Arsenal’s attack is midfielder Alex Iwobi (£5.4m). His assist for Granit Xhaka‘s (£5.3m) opening goal was his third attacking return in four Gameweeks. He is another of Emery’s charges who rarely completes full 90-minute spells in the Premier League (his full outing in Gameweek 20 the first since Gameweek 10), but at the cheaper price that is slightly more bearable. The Nigerian has started 10 of Arsenal’s last 15 Premier League matches and his recent form may help him add to that stability in 2019.

The only Arsenal player to create more chances than Iwobi against Fulham was Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m), who also chalked up his fourth assist of the campaign in Gameweek 21. However, his appeal continues to be dented by Arsenal’s inability to keep clean sheets, even in favourable home matches. They have just one at the Emirates Stadium since Gameweek 8, with Aboubakar Kamara (£4.4m) pouncing on the back-post to convert Ryan Sessegnon‘s (£6.0m) second-half cross. The English midfielder was actually unfortunate not to have two goals to his name already by that point as he missed golden opportunities early in the game. It says a lot about Arsenal’s ability to control and defend that their opening goal arguably came against the run of play. The protection of the benched Lucas Torreira (£5.1m) was a big miss in the first half, but Fulham still scored their goal after the Uruguayan came on at the interval.

Obviously, Emery has also not been helped by the swathe of injuries in defensive areas this season. It meant that today was the first time that Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.1m), Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) and Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m) played together, with the latter being forced off with injury at half-time to make matters worse.

“Our challenge now is to improve defensively. Today is the first time we could play with Sokratis, Koscielny and Mustafi. The injury to Mustafi meant we changed for the second half. We are happy with the attacking players and scoring goals, but we need more balance defensively to improve. We need to work, we need to do better in the second half of the season.” – Unai Emery

“(On Mustafi) It’s a small injury. It’s a small problem but he didn’t feel well after the first half. He wanted to play.” – Unai Emery

Aaron Ramsey (£7.2m) showed a glimmer of what he has often offered as he scored in a substitute’s appearance in the second half. Emery went as far as to pay him compliments in his post-match press conference, also indicating that he might not leave in January either.

“He worked well in Liverpool, today he played minutes and he scored. I want this focus. I would expect (he will still be here in January), yes.” – Unai Emery

As for Fulham, their defensive woes dragged on, taking their goals conceded column for the campaign to 47. They were not helped by the absence of Calum Chambers (£4.2m) in midfield, who was ineligible against his parent club. Claudio Ranieri handed a first league start since September 2017 to Ibrahima Cissé (£4.3m), who lasted 60 minutes before being replaced by Jean Michael Seri (£5.0m).

Fulham lined up in a 3-4-3 with Tim Ream (£4.2m), Maxime Le Marchand (£4.2m) and Denis Odoi (£4.4m) were at the back, with Joe Bryan (£4.8m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.2m) pushing on. That more forward-thinking approach was tempered by the introduction of Timothy Fosu-Mensah (£4.5m) for Christie in the 56th minute.

The aforementioned Sessegnon looked dangerous in fits and bursts. No Fulham player was treated to more big chances than him at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal XI (3-4-2-1): Leno; Koscielny, Sokratis, Mustafi (Torreira 45′); Kolasinac, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Maitland-Niles; Aubameyang, Iwobi (Saka 83′); Lacazette (Ramsey 75′).

Fulham XI (3-4-3): Rico; Ream, Le Marchand, Odoi; Bryan, Cissé (Seri 61′), Cairney, Christie (Fosu-Mensah 56′); Schürrle (Kamara 61′), Sessegnon; Mitrovic.

Selling auba is madness in my eyes. Joint top scorer, scored the most PL goals in the prem in 2018. Even when his team loses he can still score heavy points in a 3-2 defeat. What more do you want?!

having all four of haz,mo, kane and auba is not very possibly without having some serious rubbish in your team. everyone chooses another one of them to sacrifice, I don't see any madness

I needed to get Salah in , got rid of Kane and kept Auba. He's looking far too dangerous. Could have easily had a hatrick yesterday.

I sold Kane rather than Auba as Auba matches him for 1m less and don't like effect of Chelsea LC double header and how that will effect Kane's minutes and fitness

Kane is 4 goals from overtaking Anelka, Robbie Keane and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for Premier League goals, he turns 26 in July, barring any moved abroad, he’ll come very close to Shearers record

Think he offers good value, and have been the most valuable player for OGS, next to Pogba. OGS wants the young players to develope, so don't think he'll loose his place to Lukaku or Sanchez unless he proves useless or the other two shows tremendous form after at couple of cameos. Rash can also play out wide.
Think Lingard is more likely to get a rest once one of Lukaku/Sanchez are ready for more than a cameo.

Lukaku is ready, he's been away for only about a week. He'll probably be the first choice striker starting from tonight (although with more rotation compared to Mourinho's time).

Sanchez is too good and expensive to be a regular sub and I'd expect him to start more often than not. Rashford is likely to get minutes but unlikely that he'll be 1st choice in any of the positions so expect a lot of rotation.

Outside of the Top 4, clean sheets have been hard to come by. In the first half (GW1 - GW19) of the season, 5 of the non-elite kept 5 or more clean sheets (i.e. 25% or higher return rate)

CPL: 7 CS (4 home, 3 away) - LEI, NEW, CAR, BUR, mun, ful, hud
LEI: 6 CS (3 home, 3 away) - WOL, WAT, BUR, che, new, car
NEW: 6 CS (2 home, 4 away) - WAT, FUL, cpl, car, sot, hud
BOU: 5 CS (3 home, 2 away) - BHA, CAR, SOT, wat, ful
WOL: 5 CS (3 home, 2 away) - BOU, SOT, BUR, whm, cpl

Only two of the CS came against Top 6 teams, so it pays to look at fixtures against non-top 6 teams.

Looking at more recent form, Palace, Leicester and Newcastle continue to look solid at the back. Fulham have improved defensively since Ranieri took over (2 CS all season both under Ranieri). The rest all look leaky and unreliable.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who do you think will keep more CS in the second half of the season? Which defenders are you eyeing up for their clean sheet potential?

Looking at fixture runs, I would suggest:

      - Wolves: GW23 - GW29
      - Palace: GW24 - GW33
      - Newcastle: GW26 - GW31
      - Leicester: GW27 - GW35

If you are looking at potential relegation candidates for CS fixtures:

        Cardiff: GW22 - GW31 (ars)
        Burnley: GW22 - GW34 (mun TOT liv)
        Southampton: GW22 - GW28 (ars)

A brave FPL player could go for something like this from GW23

          Etheridge (CAR) - 4.0
Doherty (WOL) - PVA (CPL) - Digne (EVE)* - TAA (LIV) - Yedlin (NEW)

          * Switch Digne to Perreira from GW27.

From GW32 it is tricky, but up to GW31 it would mean benching:

          GW23: PVA (liv)
          GW24: Yedlin (MCI)
          GW25: Yedlin (tot)

In terms of value, Ranieri defenders look good. I've played Chambers twice, and got two clean sheets. I'm just hoping he can score a goal or two from set pieces.

Leicester have a nice run of fixtures in a few weeks, so I'll look to bring in Periera (and maybe Vardy/Maddy). Will be waiting for now though.

Lots of terrific budget options, if you play the fixtures right. Rotation has hidden PpG - it has the power to boost the average PpG across the 3 defender slots to premium defender levels if managed correctly.

wolves & Leicester are the frustrating ones - 8 games conceding just 1 goal.
really don't see any consistent cheap CS teams out there.
Southampton certainly have the fixtures next 5 weeks if they can find a system. Targett could be interesting but obviously depends on what happens when Bertrand returns
Wolves have to offer value after the City game.
Cardiff best fixtures but can't see any assets there except Etheridge

Aubameyang sellers are crazy. The guy has been getting serious points all 2018, plays for an attacking team. No rotation risk, most goals this year. Arsenal sign a new attacking midfielder or have Ozil in form he’d be even more devastating.

Keep selling guys and he’d be a differential again 🙂

I don't want to but I kind of have to.

Kane, Hazard, Salah, Pogba. They're just better and there's no money to get everyone.

Fixtures wise, those 4 have better and even form wise, they all beat Auba. He does unfortunately have to be sacrificed.

There are millions of different player combinations that you could have in your team. No one is crazy for doing something , people just play the game in different ways. Let the sellers sell him, chances are they have other premium players that you don't have.

I have the two players above him in total points (Salah n Haz) My other premium is Sterling.

He is a few points behind due to City poor form but in my opinion will pick up again and finish in top 3. He is only 10% owned again so is a big differential when he starts to haul again.

Agree that Auba is better than Kane though.

Agree I've kept him for 1m less and same points as Kane.

I'm a big Kane fan but with Chelski to play twice and Champions League he will either be rested or knackered at some point soon

Auba has no league cup semi and can be rested for first Europa knockout.

Also that extra 1m goes along way to beefing up midfield

Thing is, Wolves have been so rigid under Nuno with their formation, even in the Championship, I can see Tammy and Jimenez competing against each other as neither are effective enough out wide IMO. I'll be gutted if he goes, been a revelation at Villa Park this season.

I don't think Tammy will go to Wolves to sit on the bench, he has been brilliant at Villa yes and was good at Swansea last year also, he requested his loan be cancelled so he could play for a premier team.. be interesting to see how Nuno addresses this one..

Could be a switch to a 3-5-2 then, to get them both involved? I've only seen the Tammy / Wolves story posted on The Sun's website so far, has it been anywhere else more credible yet? Smith and Sarri's comments yesterday left me feeling a little more confident he'd stay!

Pulisic is 5'8. he's not a forward. He's a Willian/Pedro competitor and won't even be available until next season because he's on loan the rest of this season.

Personally, I think he's being groomed as a Hazard replacement - who's going to Real in the summer.

        I'm sure he's not. 😀

If Eden leaves, Chelsea have a replacement. But Willian will be 31 next season and Pedro 32. It is also quite possible that Hazard and Pulisic could play in the same team, Pulisic is mainly a RW after all.

Question is what this means for Hudson-Odoi. A season loan to a PL club I imagine. I'm sure Hodgson would be keen. 🙂

          Hudson-Odoi is becoming an issue.
Turning down 25m for him and asking 40m but not thinking he's ready to be given a chance is a strange conundrum.
Sarri seems to be sending out conflicting messages about him whilst admitting he's got to do what's best for hiis managerial prospects and not the development of CHO as an option

He has been given chances. I have watched him play for Chelsea a number of times this season.

Fact is, he is only 18 and it is the potential that Bayern want to buy. Chelsea will want to develop him via a loan, same as with Loftus-Cheek.

40 odd minutes of PL and some Európa league.
It's still a lot of money for a prospect.
Signing a 20yr old for big money who plays in same position can't be that encouraging for him

Ditch one out of Kane or Auba to make funds for Salah, or dont do it?

I've seen many teams in the top 10k with 5 man premium mids and no Kane Auba. Interesting game this.

Well, i seem to be getting annihilated by having no Salah. 40% of the field, most probably give him the armband, im getting red flag for socring 10 points above average when he hauls.

Not really. But I need to watch some highlight as well to get a fuller picture. Just want to gather some thoughts.

Siggy has a monopoly on set-pieces so it can easily swing his way with a penalty or two. Just want to analyse all the options.

Everton don't have many highlights atm. Next 3 are great and Siggy more likely to be In the middle of any scoring.

He’s been poor for a while and Digne seems to have fks from goal scoring positions, at least for now. Hopefully the fixtures will get them back on track. I’ve sold my Everton players a while ago as I’ve lost faith I’m afraid.

Neither. We're out of form as a team and only have 4, may be 5 fixtures left before things stiffen up.

I'll be looking to move Richarlison within that time frame.

I'm gonna sit down and look at the fixtures to see what team has a better run and decent form and try to upgrade him.

Everton STH here. Was at Burnley boxing day too.

Once he's bullied off the ball he doesn't really get a look in.
Our midfield look tired, Gomez off form and we're crying out for a centre forward.

He's getting Bournemouth but I'll be moving him on within the next four or five. Fixture swing pretty bad then.

Digne still had 2 direct free kicks and most of the corners over Sigurdsson too.
