Sané and Sterling combine to punish sellers as Liverpool finally lose

Manchester City’s attacking assets had the last laugh on Gameweek 21 in their important 2-1 win over Liverpool.

Some of their Fantasy Premier League options were shipped out to facilitate signing the likes of Eden Hazard (£11.1m) or Paul Pogba (£8.3m), both of whom blanked over the New Year fixtures, but ended up getting returns to punish their sellers.

Their exploits at the Etihad Stadium and the latest update on Liverpool are the focus of this Scout Notes article.

Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool

Goals: Sergio Aguero (£11.2m), Leroy Sané (£9.5m) | Roberto Firmino (£9.1m)

Assists: Bernardo Silva (£7.5m), Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) | Andrew Robertson (£6.6m)

Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) combined to frustrate those who sold them ahead of Gameweek 21. They were the two players involved in Manchester City’s winning goal against Liverpool, after amassing 360,000+ sales between them following the Gameweek 20 trip to Southampton. Sané, in particular, benefitted from Pep Guardiola’s decision to focus his side’s attack down Liverpool’s right flank, hoping to pull Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.1m) out of position and expose Dejan Lovren (£4.9m). While the German international had just one shot in the game, from which he scored, only Sterling touched the ball more times in Liverpool’s penalty box than him, suggesting he can return to the form he showed before Christmas.

Despite coming out of the game with the inferior haul compared to Sané’s, it was the Englishman who looks even better set for forthcoming matches. As already mentioned, he had the strongest presence in opposing boxes during the encounter and was the top creator too, playing four key passes, three more than anyone else at the Etihad Stadium. The performance of both he and Sané prove that Guardiola’s men had not become bad options overnight and with Wolves (home), Huddersfield (away) and Newcastle (away) their next three matches, there may be a clamour to buy either one of them back in over the coming days.

“We work a lot with Leroy to encourage and help him. He has something unique, his speed. He and Sterling are so young. I never complain about mistakes, because I’ve been out there and I know what it’s like.” – Pep Guardiola

The return of Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) to the Etihad Stadium proved crucial for Manchester City. He was the one to break the deadlock in what had been a tight encounter before his 43rd-minute strike. It was the first time the Argentinian striker had featured in a home starting line-up since the Gameweek 12 Manchester derby and, not surprisingly, he had more shots than any other player on Thursday night. His dominance of home matches continues then, even after missing two such encounters in December no player has more home goals than Aguero. Furthermore, only Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) has fired off more shots than the Manchester City talisman in home matches this season, despite him only playing 647 minutes at the Etihad Stadium. Aguero’s role in the winning goal was also important as it was his run through the middle which took the retreating Alexander-Arnold away and afforded Sané with the time and space to shoot and score.

While a revival of interest in Manchester City midfield and forward options looks likely, their defensive assets continue to disappoint. Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.1m) second-half equaliser ensured that the defending champions are now eight Gameweeks without a clean sheet. For some context, in that time every team in the league bar Everton, Huddersfield and Pep Guardiola’s charges have recorded a shut-out.

Manchester City never really looked like keeping Liverpool out on Thursday night, and, in fact, the Reds actually came away from the Etihad with a higher expected goals score than their hosts. They were fortunate not to go behind in the 20th minute when their weakness defending quick intricate play was exposed once more. Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) was able to thread a ball through the middle to Sadio Mané (£9.5m) with ease, who subsequently won the footrace with Ederson (£5.6m) to poke his shot onto the post. John Stones‘ (£5.2m) attempted clearance cannoned off his own goalkeeper, also attempting to get rid of the ball, and nearly resulted in a calamitous own-goal. With Salah also preparing to pounce on any scraps, the England centre-back managed to hook it off the line, with the goal decision system confirming that Liverpool were just 1.12cms from taking the lead. Furthermore, were it not for an outstanding save in the closing moments, Salah would have netted a late equaliser too. The Egyptian was certainly unfortunate not to come out away from Manchester with at least one attacking return, suggesting he remains likely to deliver away to Brighton in Gameweek 22.

Returning to the Manchester City back-line itself, it is also worth noting that viable outfield defensive options are becoming harder to find at the Etihad anyway. Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m) was forced out of the game with an injury in the 86th minute after struggling with a problem for most of the second-half and there was no update on his condition post-match either. The Frenchman was deployed at left-back with Fabian Delph (£5.3m) suspended for the encounter, although he will be back by Gameweek 22 with the FA Cup third round his final match of the ban. Guardiola explained he could have started Oleksandr Zinchenko (£4.7m) there but preferred a more experienced player to take on the in-form Salah, who this time was stationed on the right after a spell as Liverpool’s centre-forward.

“We don’t have many left-backs. We have Zinchenko but I didn’t want to use a young guy against Salah. I wanted a more experienced defender to be used for that situation. It was a great compliment that Laporte was able to play that position.” – Pep Guardiola

Elsewhere in the defence, it looks as if Kyle Walker (£6.4m) may have lost his place to Danilo (£5.1m). The England international has played just eight minutes from a possible 270 in the last three Gameweeks, while Danilo has started each of those.

While Liverpool lost the game, their defence still feels in decent shape looking forward. It remains fairly settled with Andrew Robertson (£6.6m) quashing pre-match rumours of him not travelling to start a sixth-straight game, and Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) continuing alongside Lovren at centre-back. Their ability to keep things tight this season was perhaps best exemplified against Manchester City by the fact that it took the hosts 28 minutes to have their first shot on goal. It has been two years since Guardiola’s men have gone that long without one in a home match. Therefore, Crystal Palace and Leicester’s visits to Anfield in Gameweeks 23 and 24 still look like probably clean sheets for their defensive options. Robertson still appears to be the strongest candidate for inclusion, both in our squads and in our starting line-ups. His assist for Firmino’s goal was his fifth of the season, coming when just under 300,000 of his owners benched him for Gameweek 21.

That strike came after Jurgen Klopp had made a second-half change to put more pressure on Manchester City, and it paid off. Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m), James Milner (£5.6m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.3m) were the central midfield trio for Liverpool, with Xherdan Shaqiri (£7.1m), Naby Keita (£7.2m) and Fabinho (£5.5m) named on the bench. The latter was introduced for Milner in the 57th minute, to allow more intensity going forward. With the Reds seven points clear of Manchester City at the start of the game, Klopp had obviously opted more for control up to that point, resulting in his side actually having a greater share of possession across the 90 minutes, a rare occurrence for away sides at the Etihad Stadium.

“I think system-wise there was not a real alternative in the beginning, especially when we adapted then pretty well after we changed the system, but actually only I think because Gini played really well then on the left wing, on the half-left, or whatever. Of course, Fabinho was good, but Hendo was really impressive [too]. Offensively I think we had already more moments in the game, but obviously when we played football, and that’s what we showed the boys at half-time, immediately we were a major threat for them.” – Jurgen Klopp

Finally, on the injury front, Ilkay Gündogan (£5.4m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) came through their fitness doubts to feature on the Manchester City bench.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Laporte (Walker 86′), Stones, Kompany (Otamendi 88′), Danilo; D Silva (Gündogan 65′), Fernandinho, B Silva; Sané, Aguero, Sterling.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Lovren, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum (Sturridge 86′), Milner (Fabinho 57′), Henderson; Mané (Shaqiri 76′), Firmino, Salah.

      Not if you've had the right players imo.

      I've had:

      12 x Alisson
      12 x Robertson
      9 x Alonso

      + odd ones here and there from AWB, Doherty, Bennett

      Early season I was getting more CS than not. Think they've dried up slightly but having Liverpool defensive cover is key imo.

        Yup. Premium seems the way go this season. Annoying that there are no mid-table teams that can bag a CS two games in a row, like Burnley last season or Everton, WBA etc in the past.

      Very rough! Lowest GW score of the season 38 points at 5.5m GW rank!

      Rough; Hazard(c), seven 1-2 pointers!

      Smooth; Kane, Robbo.

      Went into Xmas at 60k, came out the other side at 54k so not all bad.

      Here’s my rough take for the week:
      Planning for Salah next week, means I did Sané -> Pogba this week. 7 points down right off the bat.
      That would be bad enough, but the second part of the plan was going to be Alonso -> Doherty for the following week. But come New Years’ Eve I checked the price rises and it looked like they were going to drop and rise to price me out, so I panicked and did it a week early - which cost me another 7 points in the process.
      So now I have Pogba, Doherty and Salah for GW22...they’d better be worth it!

      Was contemplating using my 1FT to bring in Lossl for Hamer and BB-ing. Decided against, as you must always use BB in DGW or you are a casual.

      Did Ederson to Patricio and Martial to Pogba instead (-4). This cost me 3 points alone.

      BB would have gained Lossl (3), Fraser (12), AWB (6), Robbo (5). 26. Highest of the season by far, and will easily beat my BB when I eventually use it.

      Smooth 67(-4). Still a decent enough round and a green arrow for the first time in a while.

      I think i've got the Rough of the week...

      After a frustrating run of blanks in my team from GW16 through 20, this week I decided to bring in stop the rot and buy Salah, Felipe Anderson, Pogba, Jimenez for -8. A mini wildcard of sorts.

      Problem is I sold Fraser, Rashford, Sterling and Sane to afford those 4.

      Gonna take awhile to get over this.

          felt clever at the time after a horrible december for those players.

          Had Rashford for GW19-20 only - the rest I had since GW16 for multiple blanks, benches or poor performances compared to their alternatives.

          Now i'm afraid of both selling and buying players. Definitely cursed.

      41 points. Dropped to 106k OR.

      Smooth - Kane and Harry

      Rough - ALL the others blanked. Schindler red card. Changed the captaincy from Kane to Hazard a few minutes before deadline. AWB and Kamara only the 3rd and 4th players to bring returns in my 15 men squad but both were on my bench, and stayed there.

      Against the grain.....probably my best week of the season. 88 points. 16k GW rank, big Green arrow from 115k to 45k.

      Rough : Schmeichel on bench (played Patricio)

      Smooth : persevered with strong front three - Auba (c), Kane, Rashford. AWB, Robbo, Eriksen, Sané, Fraser.

      Dilemma now is whether to stick with formation and forego Salah and Haz, or disrupt to accommodate. Got 2 FTs. Currently siding with sticking but plenty of time to change my mind!

      Auba, Son and Rashford to Hazard (c), Jimenez and Wilson for a -4 didn't work out too well...Would have captained Kane (or at least Auba) so ended up losing 47 points... -Plan is to swap Hazard for Salah after the Newcastle game so thats why I downgraded Auba (who I thought might be rested) and was worried Rashford wouldn't start

      Check out this! My ML rival did this:

      Sane(10), Sterling(5), Rashford(12) > Pogba(3), Salah(2), Jim(2) for -8!

      Its even worse as he was close to get Salah and Pogba by downgrading Schindler to Bednarek and keep Rashford but he decided to sold Rashford as was flagged and played Schindler (-3)!

      What a disaster!

      I'm glad you asked this question this morning Geoff, gives me somewhere to vent my frustration at possibly my worst ever GW since playing FPL for the past 3 seasons. Here's my story ....

      My team had been on a run of good form over Xmas that had already secured me top spot and Manager of the Month for December in my 24 manager mini league as well as an overall rank of 48,668.

      My plan going into GW21 was to save a transfer and then play the following team 1-3-4-3 ....
      Edersen, Doherty, Kolasinac, Digne, Deulofeu, Pogba (c), Richarlison, Anderson, Rashford, Kane and Jimenez.

      and make some big calls and leave both Salah and Roberston on the bench (with Wan Bissaka and Hamer) assuming they would get nothing against City at the Eithad.

      However, since Rashford was "yellow flagged" right up to the deadline I decided to bench him instead of Salah.

      My first XI scored 39 points [GW Rank 5,435,377] and crashed out of the FPL Cup, whilst Rashford, Robbo and WB scored 23 points [12, 5 and 6]

      Has anyone got rougher than this yet?

      Rough:
      - Brought in Hazard for Sané and captained him.

      Smooth:
      - I'm apparently not the only one who brought in Hazard for Sané, which helps more than it probably should 😉
      - Few points on bench - feels like I made mostly the right choices of whom to play, even if it's just luck.
      - Scrapped through to the next cup round thanks to my opponent capping Salah and playing Shaqiri - with only 9 points ahead and no players left yesterday I was pretty sure I'd lose to 2 players, one of them being Salah (C).

      Finally achieved my 'Power midfield' of Son (13), Salah(2), Hazard(3), FAnderson(2) and Pogba(3), by selling Rashford for Kamara(5). Who I benched instead of Jimenez(2).

      Tossed a coin to decide between captaining Son or Pogba. Pogba won.

      Left AWB(6) on the bench for Bennet (0).

      Roughissimo! 🙁

      After a series of red arrows culminating in a GW score of 30 and GW rank of 5,714,817 in GW20, I decided that I urgently needed to reduce my defence spending in order to bring in a number of apparently essential big-hitters such as Salah, Kane and Pogba.

      So I played my second wildcard in GW21, making 9 changes, but the result was even worse - a GW score of 35 and a GW rank of 5,756,888!
      The changes were:
      Patricio(1) -> Button(2)
      Robertson(5) -> TAA(1)
      Alonso(8) -> Luiz(6)
      Trippier(6) -> AWB(6)
      Pereira(12) -> Digne(1)
      Sterling(5) -> Salah(2)
      Fraser(12) -> Pogba(3)
      Hojbjerg(suspended) -> Camarasa(1)
      Wilson(6) -> Jimenez(2)
      So my changes had resulted in an immediate loss of 31 points.
      I also had a captain failure with Hazard and benched AWB's 6 points.

      24 of these points were lost in the 4 late changes I made to my wildcard because I didn't trust Wilson and Fraser:
      Wilson(6) -> Jimenez(1)
      Kane(12) -> Aubameyang(9)
      Pereira(12) -> Luiz(6)
      Fraser(12) -> Richarlison(2)

      I only hope that the new squad is more successful in future game-weeks!

      + Bought Wan-Bissaka for Bellerin

      - Benched Wan-Bissaka (6pts) for his clean sheet against Wolves
      - Played Doherty and Digne instead, who blanked (1pt each)
      - Also benched Kamara's goal (5pts)

      + Alonso finally scores more than 6pts (8pts!)
      + Saved a free transfer
      + Captained Aubameyang's 9pts

      - Missed out on Son (13pts) as a captain due to percieved rotation risk

      + Son 13pts!

      + Rashford surprise 12pt haul after last week's 11pts, given that he was a doubt to play.
      + Sterling assisting Sané as expected to get 15pts from the duo https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19645868
      + Salah and Hazard failing to return

    Continuing from previous article.

    The question everyone is asking: your opinion on Kamara and Ings?

    If I wanted to have TAA instead of Lovren I would need to do Ings to Kamara to fund it (Holebas to TAA)

    Current roster:
    Fab Speroni
    Robbo Digne Doherty Holebas Awb
    Salah Hazard Pogba Richarlison Fraser
    Kane Jimenez Ings

        Yep Gomez is behind the corner. However Gomez is also cheap and could do Lovren to Gomez after 22-4gws.

        Ihave not thought about Alisson, not a bad one. I would still prefer attacking returns and keeping more pennies on the field.

          But Spurs have two extra games against Chelsea coming up with already having had a hectic schedule. Kane might burn out soon.

          Auba's fixtures aren't that bad.

      ignore the son to Eriksen move and get a cheaper placeholder with decent fixtures for son. eg Fraser or deulo.

        Have had my eyes on Deulo for a while just not convinced yet. Cheaper placeholder in mid definitely a good option to upgrade another attacker to Arnie i.e

          Actually Auba + Son -> Kane + Deulo. Leaves enough in the bank to do Reid -> Arnie in GW24.

      At least Lovren has done nicely in FPL. 54pts / 810mins , Gomez 52pts / 1047mins.

      He wasn't even THAT bad. Rough game sure, but there's been much worse from other players this season. In the case of the Aguero goal, it is actually surprisingly difficult to mark a player in that situation and the goal was still a very difficult shot. Needed to be inch perfect with a lot of power to score from that angle

        It wasn't just Aguero goal he got progressively worse. Gave the ball straight back to City so many times at the end when pushing for equalizer

    In a dilemma on how to bring in Salah.
    Original plan was: Sane + Martial> Salah + Richarlison, but with Man City performance from yday am a bit wary of proceeding with that plan. Son's current form makes me think its worth leaving for the Utd game

    Any recommendations on how to bring Salah in?

    do we think salah will rise in price before next week (with lots of wildcards being played)? If so, by how much?

    My teams gonna be this. Salah is coming in.. although it’s a defensive move and I don’t like the bloke.

    Ederson Hamer
    Doherty, Digne, AWB, TAA, Bedarnek
    Sterling, Salah, Richarlison, Pogba, Cambi
    Kane, Rashford, Jiminez

      Looking good. Like I said yesterday, the transfers don't make much sense when you write it down but it works for your team. Are you planning to get Son when he's back?

        Thank you. Sorry not sure I saw the replies yesterday but appreciate it !

        Yeah I haven’t had Son yet but will definately get him. That could be when I get him and reconsider Kane!

    Which moves:

    A) Balbuena to TAA (double up with Robertson)
    B) Hazard to Salah
    C) Son to Salah and Mitrovic to Kamara (-4)
    D) A + C (-8)

    Anyone know whether prices are locked on players who move out of the game?

    Say if I do Kamara -> Quaner (don't ask) and he moves on loan to C'ship/Abroad, would CQ then stay at 4.3 for the rest of the season?
