Finding the best combination of premium FPL options

After the hectic Christmas period, there is no little consensus over which premium Fantasy Premier League options are the best to own.

The problem has been particularly prevalent in midfield and attack with the recent re-emergence of Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) forcing managers to chop and change their more expensive assets to get him back in.

We have decided to take the opportunity of the upcoming break from league action to compare some of the popular players at the dearer end of their classification.

These are Salah, Raheem Sterling (£11.3m), Eden Hazard (£11.1m), Leroy Sané (£9.5m) and Paul Pogba (£8.4m) in midfield with Harry Kane (£12.6m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m), Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.1m) up front.

Using the Fantasy Football Scout members’ area we have weighed these options against each other for various statistics over the last six Gameweeks.

The analysis takes into account their minutes per shots in the box, minutes per efforts on target, creativity and expected data.

We have chosen the period of the last six Gameweeks to factor in the hectic festive period but also to take into account some of the matches before that too.

Those who aren’t currently paid up members could wait until the weekend to pick up a discounted membership for £10 and access this later…

Digne should come good + got great fixtures. Pat as well.
      Kayal is just bench fodder.
You could maybe do Fab -> Guaita and upgrade Martial to Pogba?

Seems like a simple FT fix if you have eight core players you’re happy with.

      Definitely not WC worthy.

I'd be happy with half of your *s. Kiko, Digne, Pat, Kayal are all fine.

You only really want rid of Martial. Maybe Martial > Bilva?

He got an assist in his final game for me last night but I have downgraded Alonso and Robbo to Luiz and TAA. Can you do that and upgrade Kamara to Arnie? I'd also look at your GK situation. WHU don't keep CS's.

Is Salah really worth the hassle and hits it requires for me to get him in? Would mean losing Auba and at least a -4, maybe -8

This is my dilemma. If he repeats his scoring of last 5 weeks then it's worth it but otherwise its just disruptive to get him in

      There it is, right there.

You have to lose one big hitter to get Salah back. No other way around it.

If you’re going to captain Auba then is Salah really going to outscore him by enough to justify downgrading Auba to a likely crap striker?

I'm trying to get in Rashford or Arnautovic as replacement for Aub - without giving up too much elsewhere. If you can make that work, I think it will be worth it.

Dont get martial. Pogs is nailed n martial isnt with the form of lukaku n rashford. Sane at home n on form, alonso at home, unless salah scores 4 you not gonna get those points back with a minus 8 this week. Better to save imo n captain haz at home to newcastle.

So after quite a long discussion before the Christmas fixtures that rotation would be rife and we would 'need a strong bench', I wonder how many times over the fixtures your bench was actually used?

For me it was exactly 0 times. Not one player of my starting 11 was dropped or rotated.

Think we need to ignore the noise for future seasons as the rotation just didn't materialise, let's get the money we have on the pitch not on the bench

Took money out my premium defence to get Kane and Salah in one team (only had Kane before) to wild card to this:

    Etheridge - Guaita

    Luiz - TAA - AWB - Bennett - Periera

Is Salah set and forget captain the way to go?

My captains this year have got me a total of 308 points. This includes Aguero's 40 points, Sterling's 42 and 32 pointers and Mane's 30 points.

If any of us captained Salah every week we would have 302 captain points. For me this is obviously 6 points fewer. But then you also have to consider the transfers I have made swapping between premiums and the time spent deliberating captaincy choices.

I think there is a strong argument for me (and many others presumably who are unable to pick the right premium captain choice on a regular basis) to have Salah as set and forget captain.

maybe. or maybe it frees up transfers for you to take punts and mid price options with good form and short runs of good fixtures. arguably more fun

          • 9 Years

Why can't you do those punts while also changing captaincy anyway? I don't see how not having a set and forget captain stops you from doing that

            • 6 Years

    3. Rodney

He can't be a set and forget. Let's say he's playing away to City and you have, say, Kane or another premium asset vs the ever leaky defence of Bournemouth one week (hypothetically speaking). Could you really sort your team and leave the armband on him?

I Salah a good captain choice when there are no standout games? Absolutely. Try using him as your skipper and only move it if there is a standout option instead.

      1. Pillson
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

This is in a way, exactly my point.

My captaincy fails this year have included:
Kane 2 pointer against CAR (GW8)
Sterling 4 pointer against CRY (GW18)
Hazard 6 pointer against SOU (GW21)

All choices that without the benefits of hindsight seemed like excellent captaincy picks. They scored 12 points.

In these weeks, Salah faced MCI, wol, mci. 3 hard fixtures. If I had captained Salah for these 3 fixtures I would have scored 34 points.

Trying to save a bad decision is tough work lol. Couple of quick questions in terms of best option for next few weeks:

    A: Redmond or Ings
    - Ings would be on pens, nailed on when fit, good stats
    - redmond is not someone i trust but his numbers look pretty good (good pen touches but doesnt seem like he shoots much). has he changed under the new manager?

    B: Redmond or Paterson
    - both similar price, good fixtures
    - worth playing one of them in a 352? or best to go uber cheap (hojberg) and use the extra funds on def to play 442

    C: Alonso or TAA
    - obviously there is a big diff in price but is the savign worth it? I could try to keep alonso and get taa too but then its a comparison between someone like alonso vs. arnie
    - I was initially thinking of getting rid of alonso from gw 23 (ars, bou, HUD, mci, BHA, TOT) but he looked really attacking in the last gw (def passed the eye test). apart from the city game, i think alonso can haul in most games

Wouldn't get Ings until he starts getting 90mins. Warnock is looking to buy a striker, if he does Paterson could lose his place. TAA + 1.7mil for me.

        What TM said.

Basically a tool that takes your team and projects how many points it will score over a given period. Then allows you to pick other players and take some out, giving a visual representation of your predicted scoring.

The projections in the members area are the same thing but more specific, and not looking at your team as much as the whole pool of players in FPL

Think the responses are a bit harsh. I wouldnt do -8 but if the defender was Bednarek it looks good to me

Hazard and 4.4 mid to Siggy & Richarlison yes or no?

    Keeping Haz means 433.

So who's the bold England boy that's been at the devil's dandruff then? My initial thought was Dele Ali but apparently he's from a team whose dressing room has been in turmoil (pre christmas) this season. Guess that means United, Leicester, Southampton and can rule out Spurs

Isn't Vardy retired? I was thinking Maddison or Shaw

Probably stating the obvious here, but I think you've either gotta keep Hazard all season or not at all. There will be plenty more blanks to come, and many more hauls too.

Personally I'm not captaining him for at least the next 5, so I'm getting rid next Gameweek. Looking forward to owning Eriksen, I think he'll be pretty consistent for the short / medium term.
