The latest on the Chelsea injury situation as Hazard gets an extended run-out

Our summary of the weekend’s FA Cup matches continues with a closer look at three ties contested on Saturday afternoon.

As usual we’ll be rounding up the main Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury updates concerning the Premier League sides involved.

Chelsea 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Eden Hazard (£11.1m) was handed more minutes than perhaps anticipated in this FA Cup third round victory for Chelsea, with the Belgian introduced as a 42nd-minute substitute after Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.2m) suffered a recurrence of his back injury.

It was a relatively quiet afternoon for Hazard, who had only one (blocked) attempt on goal but who nevertheless teed up another five chances for his team-mates in the second half.

The Belgium international also played the last 15 minutes of this match as a central striker, though understandably appeared to be conserving his energy for more important matches ahead.

Assistant coach Carlo Cudicini gave an update on Loftus-Cheek, who had been deployed on the right wing for this tie, after full-time:

We are very sorry for the kid to be honest. His impact on the games he played so far has been very good. Even today I feel he was contributing very much so it’s a pity.

It’s something that is affecting him and something we need to look at resolving. Obviously, it’s been going on for a while and now he will probably have to stop for a bit to try to resolve it.

The star of the show in west London was Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m), who has been recently linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Hudson-Odoi began brightly on the left flank before being switched to the opposite wing on Hazard’s introduction, delivering two fantastic crosses for Alvaro Morata (£8.4m) to convert after the interval.

Cudicini said of the youngster:

He did very well, it was a very good performance, as we say in Monaco, a “360 performance”. Two assists and he worked very hard defensively. Even when we had a few problems in midfield with Ampadu, he was running for two.

His commitment was great and you want him to have performances like that so he can put some doubts in Maurizio’s mind and be in contention for a place.

It was another rollercoaster afternoon for Morata, who spurned an excellent headed opportunity in the first half and who missed an absolute sitter when flagged offside just after the break.

The Spanish striker was at least back on the scoresheet for the first time since November with two tidy finishes (one a header) from pinpoint Hudson-Odoi deliveries.

Cudicini said of the much-maligned forward:

I think Alvaro played an important part in today’s performance, he was very good in terms of working for the team, offensively but mainly defensively.

It was very important for him to score two goals, which can only be good for his confidence. We are all pleased with his performance but we were even when he didn’t score in previous games so hopefully, it will be good for his morale that he scored, and hopefully he will be more free in his mind.

Gianfranco Zola mentioned in the press conference before the match that for a striker it’s difficult when you go through a spell when you don’t score many goals, so his body language was a bit down, but in training he’s working very hard and we all knew that sooner or later he would be able to turn the corner and start scoring goals. Thankfully he did it today, it was very important because we really care about this competition and we want to do well.

He’s a great striker, he has great qualities and now his confidence is back I’m sure he will keep on scoring goals for us.

Willian (£7.2m), Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) and Pedro (£6.3m) missed out on this match through injury, with Maurizio Sarri making eight changes to his side following the 0-0 draw with Southampton in midweek: only Morata, Ross Barkley (£5.3m) and David Luiz (£5.9m) keeping their places.

Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) was one of the eight players handed a breather, with Emerson Palmieri (£5.2m) producing an Alonso-esque performance in his stead: decent going forward, suspect at the back.

Cesc Fabregas (£6.2m) missed a first-half penalty in what could have very well been his farewell appearance in a Chelsea shirt, with the former Barcelona midfielder seemingly set for a move to Monaco.

Fabregas was substituted with a knock late on, meanwhile.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Zappacosta, Christensen, Luiz, Emerson; Ampadu, Fabregas (Kante 85′), Barkley; Loftus-Cheek (Hazard 42′), Morata (Azpilicueta 75′), Hudson-Odoi.

Everton 2-1 Lincoln City

Richarlison (£6.9m) had an eventful ten-minute cameo as Everton edged past Lincoln City: the Brazilian curled a shot just wide, cleared a late Imps effort off the line and caught an elbow to his face after being introduced as an 80th-minute substitute for Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m).

It was a fairly unremarkable performance from the Icelandic midfielder, who was one of six Everton players to keep their place in Marco Silva’s starting XI following the New Year’s Day defeat to Leicester City.

Sigurdsson, who lined up in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, stung the hands of visiting goalkeeper Josh Vickers with one half-volley in the second half but didn’t particularly impress against League Two opposition.

Much of Everton’s good work came down the left flank, with Leighton Baines (£5.0m) and Bernard (£5.9m) being the Toffees’ two stand-out players.

Baines crossed for the fit-again Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) to nod the hosts in front before Bernard chipped in Everton’s second following neat build-up play from Sigurdsson and central striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m).

Calvert-Lewin, who missed a decent chance to extend Everton’s lead, was one of two players hooked at half-time, with Silva also sacrificing Tom Davies (£5.1m) for Cenk Tosun (£6.5m) and Andre Gomes (£5.4m).

Silva said:

In that moment, I felt we needed a player like Andre.

We completely controlled the game with the ball and were creating problems for them but when they score we started to have some doubts in our build-up and we needed Andre in that moment.

About the situation with Dominic, it was the moment for us to give Cenk the chance to show his quality.

Baines’ impressive performance at left-back may have slightly ruffled owners of Lucas Digne (£5.2m), who was handed a rest for this encounter, though consideration of course has to be given to the calibre of the Toffees’ opposition on Saturday afternoon.

It was another match without a clean sheet for Everton’s backline, with Lincoln defender Michael Bostwick halving the deficit just before the half-hour following a set-piece situation.

Lookman also caught the eye on the right flank and Silva was asked about the youngster’s prospects of starting in Gameweek 22. The Everton boss said:

You’ll have to wait and see next Sunday. He is important for us and will be more important for the future. I have no doubts about him, now he is ready to play if I take the decision.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Kenny, Mina, Zouma, Baines; Davies (Gomes 45′), Gueye; Lookman, Sigurdsson (Richarlison 80′), Bernard; Calvert-Lewin (Tosun 45′).

Derby County 2-2 Southampton

Southampton will have to contest a third-round replay in between Gameweeks 22 and 23 (games against Leicester City and Everton respectively) after spurning a two-goal lead at Pride Park on Saturday.

Nathan Redmond (£5.2m), who has two goals and as many assists to his name in his last five Premier League appearances, put the Saints 2-0 up with a brace of strikes, his second goal a fantastic, dipping effort from distance that left home goalkeeper Kelle Roos flatfooted.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made six changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Chelsea in Gameweek 21 and deployed a 4-2-2-2 formation – his favoured system during his tenure at RB Leipzig – for the first time.

Redmond and Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.1m) – who wasted a great chance to win the game – were the two most advanced midfielders in this set-up, with Charlie Austin (£5.5m) and Shane Long (£4.7m) leading the line for the visitors.

Angus Gunn (£4.3m) once again lined up in goal, while Matt Targett (£4.2m) returned at left-back after his rest at Stamford Bridge.

Hasenhuttl was frustrated with the result and the subsequent replay that his new charges will now have to contest:

That’s a result we didn’t want to have. To play another game is not necessary today I think because for 60 minutes we were the better team and I felt the tactics were perfect.

After the break, the opponent tried long balls to get more chances but we didn’t give any away until the 60th minute. At 2-0, I think we were feeling too comfortable which is always dangerous in a cup match because the opponents will never give up. Then at 2-1, I felt we needed to push the tempo high again but we did it too late and you can see what happens.

In the last ten minutes, both teams tried to win the game and it was open with chances for both teams but we made it difficult for ourselves. If you start getting sloppy then it’s difficult to win, also against a Championship team. That’s what we have to learn.

We showed we are prepared with a new shape which is a positive thing to play the 4-2-2-2 for the first time but over 90 minutes we were not concentrated or sharp enough to take the win.

Danny Ings (£5.6m) and Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) missed out on the draw, with Hasenhuttl providing an update on the injured pair:

We have a few injury problems with our forwards.

Danny Ings is injured for two weeks and that’s the reason he couldn’t play and Stuie Armstrong I gave a rest to and he couldn’t play as he has problem with his ankle also.

Austin and Long look to be Hasenhuttl’s go-to pair in the short-term, with Manolo Gabbiadini (£5.6m) seemingly set for a move away from St. Mary’s.

The Southampton boss said:

A few teams are interested in Manolo and we have a look and if there’s a result we tell you. Sure (there have been offers). We have to decide and he has to decide where he wants to go.

That Austin and Long were toothless in the Southampton attack underscored how disappointing the injury to Ings is, with the south coast club top of our Season Ticker for the next five Gameweeks and not offering too many other stand-out candidates for Fantasy investment.

Redmond and – if fit – Armstrong could perhaps prove to be savvy budget midfield options, however.

Southampton XI (4-2-2-2): Gunn; Cedric, Stephens, Vestergaard, Targett; Ward-Prowse, Slattery; Elyounoussi (Barnes 71′), Redmond; Long, Austin (Johnson 79).

Following a couple of disappointing results for Pep’s Citizens, many of their players dropped out of our teams. However, following a well fought and important victory over Klopp’s Liverpool we must consider that they will likely hit their high scoring form soon.

Sergio Aguero was once again on the scoresheet with a fantastic finish against Liverpool, offering a timely reminder that he has been Man City’s top goal scorer for each of the last 7 seasons. Returning from injury, he’s bagged 2 goals and an assist in his 3 starts, taking his tally for the season up to 10 goals and 7 assists. If City hit top gear soon, he will likely become the premium striker to get, however he currently has a tough job displacing Kane from many managers teams, considering Kane’s lower rotation risk and better fixtures.

Alternatively, there’s Sane and Sterling. With 9G and 9A this season, Sterling has struggled for returns in the last 6 gameweeks – just 1G and 2A. However, his performances have improved recently, but not enough to stop many of his owners selling this week. On the other wing, Sane provided a lovely 10 points in what was quite a tough week for many. However he, like Sterling, faces the heavy risk of rotation, especially with the impending return of Mendy on the horizon. The question is, can Man City’s form improve to the point where it offsets the risk of rotation.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva has become the most transferred in City player this week. He hasn’t been hauling but he’s been quietly ticking away with points, with 1G and 3A in the last 4. The fears of rotation have been quietened recently, with him playing over 80 minutes in all the last 8 gameweeks, however KDB is now returning, meaning KDB, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Gundogan are all competing for 2 spots. At the price of 7.5 mil, you can probably afford him to miss one or two games, but he certainly seems to be greatly appreciated by Pep.

Less popular is the defence. Following their run of 6 clean sheets in a row earlier in the season, they’ve only had 1 clean sheet in the last 11, and none in the last 8 – a poor showing for their premium defence. As a result, many managers are calling time on Laporte, making him the most transferred out City player this week – with him now flagged as a knock.

Enough waffling – I’ll throw it over to you now.

Who’s hot and who’s not for City? Are you making any potential plans for these players?

Just about to ask this as I feel it’s a risk to go without city in the Huddersfield and Newcastle games. I feel I can just drop hazard for one of them if need be

Hazard to a Sterling / Sane or Kane to Aguero are both very much on my radar, but it's hard dropping both considering their fixtures / how nailed they are!

        It's a nice back-up plan to have I guess!

Since gameweek 13 Sane has only started on the bench once in PL. I own Sane but Kane to Aguero could be an alternative soon.

Ill leave Maximum Bonimus comment below

      "Wouldn’t panic on city

They have league cup, fa cup, champions league, and Kun Jesus, Sané, Sterling, Mahrez, Bilva, Dilva, all playing for 4 positions alongside KDB & Fernandinho.

No guarantees they’ll navigate that schedule scoring 4s and 5s and even if they do, good luck trying to get a regular starter."

Not to forget returning Mendy adds to Sane minuites being reduced plus formation changes

This - id much rather pay a little extra for Kane, Salah, Haz, Auba instead of Kun, Sterling, Sané, KDB and be certain of starts. Lord knows Team values should be high enough to accommodate the extra now.

City’s schedule is jam packed so Pep will be a walking wheel of fortune for the next few months you’d imagine.

Lot of injury sites put it as late Feb based on comments from November, so more inclined to back the FPLs early Feb estimate assuming they'll perhaps have some extra information

Think I will drop Raheem for Sane this week, tough to say goodbye to him but the funds mean I can get Salah for Hazard with 2FT or go 352 the week after.

I suspect many will be ruing selling City mids in the last couple of weeks, myself included in part.

Think now Aguero is my preferred option. The longer I delay a Sane move it feels he becomes less appetising and more just an inevitable transfer out.

You mean due to Mendy? I'm not so sure given improved form and gameplay from watching (more involved, tracking back to defend when necessary, free kicks etc). Even when Mendy's recovered could take a while to get properly back, as with KDB.

I’m getting Sane after the Wolves game. That will be my only City cover and I feel comfortable with that decision (until City start trouncing teams again and then I’ll reassess).

            I agree.

Dropping a highly owned Kane when he has a run of great fixtures feels incredibly risky though, so I will probably hold tight for now.

If Kane grabs a hatty, which is very possible, you might be left with a red face! Eriksen might deliver some reliable points, but he can't cover an explosive Kane haul. Of course, whether Kane will provide a haul like that is a separate question...

Isn’t the midfield going to be more of a minefield than ever now? City in all the four competitions.
          KDB back
Gündogan playing very well, as is Bilva
Mahrez and Jesus also in the mix

They'll be rotation of course, it is Pep's city after all, but not to a level where all City mids can be ruled out, as long as City start to score well again.

Central midfield might be too risky to touch, but Sterling will play most games, and you'd think Sane too until Mendy returns. CL will complicate things, granted, but we might see some patterns form.

Aguero is better at Etihad. They have two away fixtures soon. Sterling hasn't been great against top6 teams, Chelsea at least won't be easy fixture. Dilva may be carrying injury and KdB not in form yet.

Sterling and Sane killed my rank. Not going back to that trap too soon.

I was watching the match on tv, and the commentator (local) was wondering if he was injured when he was subbed. Then he wasn't in the cup squad imo. So I just thought that 1+1 might be 2. So nothing to be trusted here but not trying to create fake news.

Yet there has been one quite similar situation last year when I saw Kane leaving the pitch and touching his hamstring or thigh. And it was a minor injury after all.

I can see myself reverting to Aguero & Mendy who I started the season with. Got Aubameyang for a straight swap and can leverage another 6m defender easily at the forwards’ expense.

GW23 I'm planning on doing Hazard and Jimenez to Redmond and Aguero which will also enable me to do Fanderson to Sane GW24. So City double up.

I had avoided city hoopla and erratic Arsenal and foucsed on nailed consistent assets from Liv Chel Spurs in first 12 GWs which helped me rise to 1600 from 90k. But after that I thought I need to play differently to have a shot at winning and got involved in punting on Mcity assets and auba at unlucky times at expense of Salah which pulled me down to worrisome 9k overall. Its fair to say I will keep it simple like Villa Ronka does every season and see where patience gets me.

Fulham have lost at home to Oldham.
Liverpool will only get a Blank in Gameweek 31 if they reach the 6th Round of the FA Cup; they're away at Wolves in the 3rd Round tomorrow night.

What do we hope for then?

Burnley Cardiff and Arsenal are only 3 teams i havent owned a player from yet.

Fro. Arsenal it has been Auba or none for me. Played with one premium attacker(Kun/Kane) and 2 budget strikers till now. Never jumped on Auba wagon though.

Plus their midfeild and defence has been a no go. Im considering Kolasinac though

        Evening,

        Alisson
        AWB - Digne - Robertson
        Felipe A - Haz - Rich - Pogba - Son
        Kane - Rashford
        Speroni, Kamara, Doherty, Bednarek

Have 2 FT and 2,3 £ ITB. Currently thinking of doing following:

        a) Felipe A & Son > Salah & Camarasa
        b) Felipe A & Son > Salah & Kante
        c) Other option, like hold Son for one more week?

Luiz has the highest form of any defender currently, and decent cover for Alonso whilst he continues to blank attack wide abd has monstrous ownership.

Kane I was considering but seems most are looking to go the other way and remove for Aguero.

Yeah thats true, but my viewpoint for owning Kane is that, now with Son out for Asian Games, plus easy fixtures, it seems to me that Kane is the obvious choice, and I also think that he'll score somewhere between 25-30 goals this season and he's only on 14 by now. And the most important of all, when Spurs beat someone by 3 goals it's huge probability that Kane scored at least 2 goals, but when City does that, you can never know whether Sane, Sterling, Aguero or even Silva scored . Cheers

I'm on my WC, and I've been thinking all day long whether I should go with:
        A) Bennet - David Silva - Kamara
        OR
        B) Doherty - Brooks - Mitrovic
and the rest of my team looks like this
        Etheridge / Guaita
        Robertson / TAA/ Digne/ ? / Bednarek
        Sterling / Salah/ Richarlison/ ? / Camarasa
        Arnautovic / ? / Kane
First option promises potentialy high points return form Silva and also gives me possibility to change him for Pogba e.g .
Second option gives me more balance and oportunity to switch players with favourable fixtures, but limits me in terms of not having a third premium midfielder.
What do you think? Also please RMT. Thanks

Id say B. With A you either have to play a 4.5 mid/fwd or bennet/bednarek. You will still have 3 big hitters, including the 2 most expensive.

If I look at the PL table, the manager who looks to be underperforming to me is Silva at Everton. You can split the PL into different sections IMO:

            Tier 1: Liverpool, City
Tier 2: Spurs, Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal
            Tier 3: Everton, Leicester
Tier 4: West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth, Watford
Tier 5: Brighton, Palace, Newcastle, Burnley, Southampton, Cardiff, Fulham, Huddersfield

Everyone is pretty much in their tier apart from Everton. Still time for that to change though.

          1) Would ya play Snodgrass (ARS) over Jimenez (mci)?
          2) Hamer to Button just this week? I've got 2FT 0.1ITB

          Fabs
          Alonso Robertson Digne AWB
          Hazard(c) Pogba Sane
          Kane Auba Jimenez

          Hamer Billing Snodgrass Doherty

          --

Plan is likely Salah TAA fodder-fwd in for Snodgrass Alonso Auba after this GW.

          Sory for repost

          2 FTs

          1) Ings to Deeney (have 2 FTs to fix Son next week)

          2) Son, Ings ,Kamara ➡ Arnie Rashford Camarasa

Can't afford a direct switch unfortunately

Like the look of Deeney though, posting decent stats too

I am currently on some WC tinkering. Bringing Salah and TAA in, double on City attack and prioritize good and medium term fixtures were some of my main thoughts. What do you think?

          Guaita
          Robertson, TAA, Digne
          Sane, Sterling, Pogba, Salah, Hazard
          Rashford, Barnes

          Button, Bissaka, Valery, Kamara

          Cheers!

I'd go Kane over Haz ,

or posibly Moura over Haz and upgrade Barnes to Firmino

Incredible how Navas has built a career on squaring people up and going to the right for a cross

          and it's still working
