Southampton’s budget midfield assets assessed ahead of fixture turn

Southampton sit top of our Season Ticker for the next seven Gameweeks, enjoying home matches against Everton, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City and Fulham as well as making trips to Leicester City, Burnley and Arsenal.

For those Fantasy managers that place appealing fixtures towards the top of their priority list, then the Saints command attention from now until the end of February.

The eye-catching Fantasy assets on the Saints’ books are few and far between, however.

Danny Ings (£5.6m) is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, while potential replacement Charlie Austin (£5.5m) was charged by the Football Association over an “abusive or insulting gesture” allegedly made during the defeat to Manchester City.

Austin and Shane Long (£4.7m) are far from convincing FPL options in attack regardless, with their ineffectual showings in the 2-2 draw with Derby County on Saturday yet more fuel to the argument that the pair aren’t quite at Premier League level.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m) has been a semi-popular bench fodder option in FPL this season and is another Saints player who is currently unavailable, having incurred a four-match ban following his dismissal in Gameweek 20.

The good news on that front is that Southampton’s hastily arranged third-round replay against Derby County on Wednesday week serves as one of the matches in which Hojbjerg will be sidelined for, meaning he will return for the Gameweek 23 visit of Everton.

Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) looks a decent budget punt in defence, having nailed down a starting spot and is seemingly secure of a centre-back berth in whatever system Ralph Hasenhuttl deploys in the coming weeks: the Polish defender has started all six Premier League fixtures under the new Saints boss and the unconvincing performance of Jack Stephens (£4.2m) on Saturday, coupled with the departure of Maya Yoshida (£4.1m) to the Asian Cup, means that viable alternatives are thin on the ground at centre-half.

It should be said, of course, that Gameweek 21’s unexpected clean sheet at Stamford Bridge was Southampton’s first shut-out in 11 matches: no Premier League side had hitherto been on a worse run since Gameweek 11.

It remains to be seen if that impressive rearguard display in west London was a flash in the pan or the start of something altogether more promising.

Chelsea didn’t create a single “big chance” in that goalless draw, though the subsequent departure of Yoshida could be a significant one to Southampton’s clean sheet prospects in the coming weeks.

The focus of this article is on attacking assets, however, and more specifically on two differential budget midfield options.

Ings aside, Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) are perhaps the stand-out names in this Southampton side from an offensive perspective.

Having not registered a single attacking return all season until Mark Hughes’ dismissal, Redmond has two Premier League goals and as many assists since Hasenhuttl took charge, also registering a brace in the 2-2 draw with Derby on Saturday.

Armstrong missed that FA Cup third round tie with an ankle problem, though his manager talked in terms of “a rest” so it is assumed the Scottish midfielder’s injury isn’t serious.

Armstrong has yet to register an attacking return under Hasenhuttl but has played a key role since the Austrian took charge, starting in five of the six matches that the ex-RB Leipzig head coach has overseen (being rested for the visit of Manchester City with one eye on the Chelsea fixture).

The former Celtic player did hit a purple patch just before Hughes’ sacking, though, scoring three goals in two games against Fulham and Manchester United.

      Alonso Digne Kola (AWB Bennett)

      A) Martial + Auba > Salah + Arnie/Rashford (eventually do Snod -> Rich for a hit as well)

KDB is coming back from a long injury. His problem now is that there are several players in form that can play in his spot. He is still amazing. I am tempted to go for KDB if he can nail a spot. Otherwise I will go Bilva

KDB is still a wait and see for me. Mendy may not be an option for many as a lot of managers seem to have gone with a value defense. Could be a good differential.

Based on Mendy news he should be coming back for Arsenal and Chelsea game so I will not be bringing him in for those for sure, but GW27 might be time for the return of RAM. Also with him getting back, time to start planning ditching Sane soon, I think i will be keeping him for next 3 weeks and then switch to Salah (hoping Sane+Richy will at least equal Salah's points for these next 3 weeks before they leave my team for good)

Problem is Pogba's price - at 7.9 he was a solid value. 8.4 is tricky. I'm tempted to get him as a Son placeholder only.

According to Ragabolly's awesome site (livefpl.net) - unless I'm reading it wrong - over 3% of total FPL players have already played their 2nd WC - that's c. 180,000 people, after only 1GW! Even in the Top 10k, 250 people have already triggered it. If you take FFS as a sample, you'd think the template move this week was to WC.

Obviously 3% isn't huge, but it makes me think are we seeing a change this season where getting a head start on the second half of the season by playing a WC earlier may pay off more than holding it and hoping for a big advantage at the tail end when DGWs .etc are played?

        What do you think?

I will play it when I need it. My team is already pretty template to be honest. If I don't need it between now and the start of the DGWs, I will use it then.

Yeh I mean I don’t feel I need to play it yet but have been quite shocked how many on here are triggering which I why I wanted to look at overall stats.

Maybe I’m forgetting from previous seasons and it’s always like this!

I never used to check when others used it. I like to use it 1-2GWs before the DGWs. I looked at my team after reading your post and there are really only a few small changes I would make. Lovren to TAA, change both my keepers from Fab and Hamer to two playing ones, Ings to Barnes. That's about it. Maybe Gunnarson to somebody who also plays every match but in a more advanced role. Hardly worth it for benchfodder and 2 injuries.

I’m in a similarish position. Happy with the core of my team. The only thing I’m lacking is MCI attack which I will think about next couple of GWs probably

Had Sane for weeks. I've got a big hitter from every major team except for Hazard because I he is too inconsistent for his pricetag and Chelsea are shite.

I still have Haz but likely to be my fall guy to bring in Sané or Sterling (or even Dilva to free up cash) next week unless he really turns things around this week and looks hot to trot

He is a trap. Even if he scores this week, and he won't as Newcastle will stifle them, that will be it then for the next few GWs. Spend the money elsewhere. If he were cheaper i.e. Eriksen/Sane price range, I would go for him.

Inclined to agree but don’t think it’s worth losing him this week as I expect Wolves to do their best to shut down City this week.

Who would you get for Haz next week? Sané/ Sterling or cheaper (Dilva/ Bilva) to fund Auba in alongside Kane?

Sane will be a rotation risk once Mendy is back (Sane owner). Sterling may be rotated with Mahrez. If you can get Auba in by going with one of the Silva's, I would do that. The Silvas won't haul like Sterling/Sane can but Auba + Silva will do well.

Because it would mean a -8, something like:

Wilson, Martial, Haz > Auba, Dilva, Camarasa

I think one obvious thing this year has been to hot and cold nature of the big hitters.

I've not sat down and worked it out but it feels players such as Hazard - Salah - Sterling never all play well in the same week, one will hit a 12-15 point score, whilst the other two blank.
          Same with Kane and Aguero.

So our desire to transfer these players around is greater than usual.

            Fair point that.

Using a wildcard when needed (heavy fixture swing, plenty of injuries etc), for now no need for me, if i wildcarded i would change maybe 4-5 players, so no point of using it yet, might be that people set up their teams for fixtures planning ahead to use it as soon as they get it.

Played my WC and considering this team:

        Guaita Fab
        Taa Pereira Gomez (Wb Bed)
Sane salah Pogba De Bruyne (Cam)
        Arnie Kane Rash

        0.0 itb

Since Auba has the better fixture this week, would i be mad to play Auba this week and leave 1.2m on the bench, so i can bring Kane in next week? as auba has chelsea and Kane has an easier fixture. ? good plan?

Auba best striker in Europe IMO.
However, more points have been lost chasing points on big hitters over Xmas than usual.
Salah Haz Auba Sterling kun Sane
              and to a lesser extent
              Bobby Pogba KDB
are all capable of getting numbers.
All the top sides have reasonable fixtures.
Make your choice ans stick with it.

i get what youre saying, im going with Kane then. over last 4 gw's 7 more points than auba, ok that may not be a lot given the 1.2m extra. but Spurs are the better team and they have much better fixtures, its a no brainer.

        Fabs
        Digne Robbo TAA
        Hazard Son Martial Anderson
        Kane Auba Jimenez
        (Button - Camarasa - AWB - Doherty)
        2ft 0.3itb

A bit puzzled as to whether to go big or burn a transfer this week. Here are some options - but I'd love some thoughts.

        A) Martial to Rich/Bilva.
        B) Son to Pogba (for long term).
        C) Downgrade Digne to Bednarek, play AWB, bank the cash for upgrades.
        D) Act now to get Salah or Sterling by losing Hazard/Kane/Auba.

Anybody discouraged from captaining Hazard now? Chelsea look toothless. However a Hazard goal is worth 10 points probably unlike Salah whose goal is worth 7 pts. All Hazard needs is 1 goal for a great captaincy return.

        couple of quick questions:

        1) Who do you expect to score more for this gw only
A: Fanderson (ARS) + Son (MUN) or
        B: Redmond (lei) + Salah (bri) (-4)

        2) best option for the next few gw's
        X: Alonso + Hazard + Sterling
Y: 4.5m def (as part of rotation) + Hazard + Salah
Z: 4.5m def (as part of rotation) + Sterling + Salah
