Southampton’s budget midfield assets assessed ahead of fixture turn

Southampton sit top of our Season Ticker for the next seven Gameweeks, enjoying home matches against Everton, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City and Fulham as well as making trips to Leicester City, Burnley and Arsenal.

For those Fantasy managers that place appealing fixtures towards the top of their priority list, then the Saints command attention from now until the end of February.

The eye-catching Fantasy assets on the Saints’ books are few and far between, however.

Danny Ings (£5.6m) is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, while potential replacement Charlie Austin (£5.5m) was charged by the Football Association over an “abusive or insulting gesture” allegedly made during the defeat to Manchester City.

Austin and Shane Long (£4.7m) are far from convincing FPL options in attack regardless, with their ineffectual showings in the 2-2 draw with Derby County on Saturday yet more fuel to the argument that the pair aren’t quite at Premier League level.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m) has been a semi-popular bench fodder option in FPL this season and is another Saints player who is currently unavailable, having incurred a four-match ban following his dismissal in Gameweek 20.

The good news on that front is that Southampton’s hastily arranged third-round replay against Derby County on Wednesday week serves as one of the matches in which Hojbjerg will be sidelined for, meaning he will return for the Gameweek 23 visit of Everton.

Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) looks a decent budget punt in defence, having nailed down a starting spot and is seemingly secure of a centre-back berth in whatever system Ralph Hasenhuttl deploys in the coming weeks: the Polish defender has started all six Premier League fixtures under the new Saints boss and the unconvincing performance of Jack Stephens (£4.2m) on Saturday, coupled with the departure of Maya Yoshida (£4.1m) to the Asian Cup, means that viable alternatives are thin on the ground at centre-half.

It should be said, of course, that Gameweek 21’s unexpected clean sheet at Stamford Bridge was Southampton’s first shut-out in 11 matches: no Premier League side had hitherto been on a worse run since Gameweek 11.

It remains to be seen if that impressive rearguard display in west London was a flash in the pan or the start of something altogether more promising.

Chelsea didn’t create a single “big chance” in that goalless draw, though the subsequent departure of Yoshida could be a significant one to Southampton’s clean sheet prospects in the coming weeks.

The focus of this article is on attacking assets, however, and more specifically on two differential budget midfield options.

Ings aside, Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) are perhaps the stand-out names in this Southampton side from an offensive perspective.

Having not registered a single attacking return all season until Mark Hughes’ dismissal, Redmond has two Premier League goals and as many assists since Hasenhuttl took charge, also registering a brace in the 2-2 draw with Derby on Saturday.

Armstrong missed that FA Cup third round tie with an ankle problem, though his manager talked in terms of “a rest” so it is assumed the Scottish midfielder’s injury isn’t serious.

Armstrong has yet to register an attacking return under Hasenhuttl but has played a key role since the Austrian took charge, starting in five of the six matches that the ex-RB Leipzig head coach has overseen (being rested for the visit of Manchester City with one eye on the Chelsea fixture).

The former Celtic player did hit a purple patch just before Hughes’ sacking, though, scoring three goals in two games against Fulham and Manchester United.

Haven't posted in a while. Any thoughts on what to do with this team?

    Fabianski (Hamer)
    Robbo Alonso Digne AWB (Doherty)
    Salah Haz Pogba Richarlison FAnderson
    Rashford (Jimenez Rondon)

Just played my WC andd got this team. Any obvious changes/room for improvement?

    Fabianski/Speroni
    Robertson/Digne/Alonso (Shaw/Wan Bissaka)
    Pogba/Salah/Anderson/Fraser (Kante)
    Arnie/Kane/Rashford

    Thanks!

If I would WC, I wouldn't get Fabianski as my primary keeper...there are better and cheaper options with better fixtures

I would probably go Rich over Anderson in that price range, especially since you have Arnie.

Also maybe Etheridge over Fab for the decent upcoming fixtures.

Could also consider downgrading Robbo and Alonso and upgrading midfield (also on WC and that was my personal approach)

Eriksen likes to haul at home and Spurs have 4 of the next 5 at home. He is a very good differential and wouldn't be surprised if he outscores Kane over the next 5.

      Is he playing too deep?
A few people have mentioned this. Similar issue to KDB in that respect. Likewise - has he lost some set pieces or not?

Doesn't really matter when he is as consistent as he is.Only 1 blank in the last 5 and 2 blanks in the last 9 fixtures. One of the blanks he played for 23 minutes so it isn't really a blank either.

I like Eriksen as a player but in FPL terms, whilst creative he just doesn't shoot enough for me. 1 shot v Cardiff, 2 v Wolves, 1 v Bournemouth etc.

Yep true, but can he sustain that long term? I'm not sure. That being said, I owned him last season and he did reasonably well for me, think the likes of Sane just edge it for me though.

Agree. I have Sane and Sterling though and in 2 or 3 GWs I think I'll drop Sane for Eriksen.

Not that it helps - but that’s my same question for my Son transfer next week.

Sane seems more obvious but rotation would be very annoying

I was leaning towards KDB if plays decent amount this GW but wandered if he will rotate more this year anyway with B.Silva and Gundogan looking good when they have played.

I was tempted to go for the nailed down mane in this price range or eriksen but I already have salah and Kane...

Seems like an unnecessary punt when there are solid options like Camarasa around that price point, unless you are desperately in need of the .4 it saves.

Gonna make one of these moves to free up 0.5m, which would you do:

    A) Schindler > Bednarek (would replace him as my 2nd/3rd sub)
    B) Fabianski > Guaita (have Button as my 2nd GK + have AWB as well)

Salah (C), Haz (v), Pog, Martial, Snoddy*

Abt Hazard, I honestly think he is much more likely to blank vs Newcastle than in the following two vs Arsenal and Bournemouth.

So... imho, it’s get rid now or keep for the next three then reassess. On a WC I would get rid, but not playing it yet so Im keeping.

Strong team. I've debated mane as well but so difficult to spend 9.5 on such an inconsistent player. I would rather spend that money on a talisman type of player. Hazard for me should be on wildcard. You can downgrade easy enough if it doesn't work out but will cost you multiple transfers and potentially hits to bring him in down the line if he hauls

          Hazard is a tricky one.
Have him, think he will blank this GW vs a def-minded NUFC but can see him score in the following two.

Of course, if he blanks this GW while Auba gets a brace and Sterling one G one A, those thoughts abt the following two will prob go out the window...

If I end up getting rid I will never bring him back again, not this season at least. But I might end up keeping

You have to lose a WH mid I think. I'd do Anderson and Snod to Salah and the cheapest mid possible if it worked.

Why would you loose Son when he's in such great form. Ditch next week for me

Looking ahead to how i want my team to look in a few gw's, which team would you prefer? any players with stand-out fixture spells?

    Fabianksi • Button
    Doherty • Schindler • Digne • TAA • XXX
    Hazard • Pogba • Rich • Salah • XXX
    Kane • Jimenez • XXX

    - schindler has a bad spell now but great fixtures from gw26 onwards all the way till the second WC
    - Digne/Rich will go for Leicester when everton's fixtures change from gw26/27
    - Getting holebas in was a bit daft but has okkish fixtures and a good price point

A: Alonso + Redmond + Kamara in a 352...can get this from next gw without any hits
B: Awb + Fanderson + Kamara in a 352..can get this from next gw without any hits
    C: Awb + Puncheon + Arnie/Rashford in a 343...will take 2 gw's and involve a hit

He probably outscores Kane this week but Kane has better fixtures longer term imo. Salah outscores both comfortably over the next 5 imo.

If Sanchez is out, Martial is a great pick. If you can squeeze 0.1 more, get Anderson. I think Auba and Anderson outscore Arnie and Salah over next 3.

Arsenal are much more attacking that Chelsea and Utd though. I think Arsenal score 2 minimum but can still not win. I can see a 2-2 or 3-2 for either side.

Are many holding Auba this week and selling next week to fund Salah/City assets?

His fixtures go from excellent to bad to excellent. Either way he looks a must have in February.

Hi guys, am I ready to go for this GW? I need a good week...

    Fabianski

Luiz - Van Dijk - Digne - Doherty

    Salah (c) - Hazard - Pogba - Bilva

    Kane - Locadia

    Patricio / Brooks / AWB / Success

Debating playing brooks over Doherty, thoughts?

    Hypothetically.... which would you prefer:
    A) Haz, Martial > Dilva, Camarasa
    B) Haz, Martial > Bilva, Deulofeu
    C) Haz, Pogba > Sané, Camarasa

No other MCI and currently have Pog + Martial

Didn’t make it clear, they would all be part of a move to get in Auba alongside Kane (for Wilson)

Sorry I should have clarified they would all be part of getting in Auba alongside Kane so for example:
Wilson, Haz, Martial > Auba, Silva, Camarasa
