Southampton’s budget midfield assets assessed ahead of fixture turn

Southampton sit top of our Season Ticker for the next seven Gameweeks, enjoying home matches against Everton, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City and Fulham as well as making trips to Leicester City, Burnley and Arsenal.

For those Fantasy managers that place appealing fixtures towards the top of their priority list, then the Saints command attention from now until the end of February.

The eye-catching Fantasy assets on the Saints’ books are few and far between, however.

Danny Ings (£5.6m) is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, while potential replacement Charlie Austin (£5.5m) was charged by the Football Association over an “abusive or insulting gesture” allegedly made during the defeat to Manchester City.

Austin and Shane Long (£4.7m) are far from convincing FPL options in attack regardless, with their ineffectual showings in the 2-2 draw with Derby County on Saturday yet more fuel to the argument that the pair aren’t quite at Premier League level.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.4m) has been a semi-popular bench fodder option in FPL this season and is another Saints player who is currently unavailable, having incurred a four-match ban following his dismissal in Gameweek 20.

The good news on that front is that Southampton’s hastily arranged third-round replay against Derby County on Wednesday week serves as one of the matches in which Hojbjerg will be sidelined for, meaning he will return for the Gameweek 23 visit of Everton.

Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) looks a decent budget punt in defence, having nailed down a starting spot and is seemingly secure of a centre-back berth in whatever system Ralph Hasenhuttl deploys in the coming weeks: the Polish defender has started all six Premier League fixtures under the new Saints boss and the unconvincing performance of Jack Stephens (£4.2m) on Saturday, coupled with the departure of Maya Yoshida (£4.1m) to the Asian Cup, means that viable alternatives are thin on the ground at centre-half.

It should be said, of course, that Gameweek 21’s unexpected clean sheet at Stamford Bridge was Southampton’s first shut-out in 11 matches: no Premier League side had hitherto been on a worse run since Gameweek 11.

It remains to be seen if that impressive rearguard display in west London was a flash in the pan or the start of something altogether more promising.

Chelsea didn’t create a single “big chance” in that goalless draw, though the subsequent departure of Yoshida could be a significant one to Southampton’s clean sheet prospects in the coming weeks.

The focus of this article is on attacking assets, however, and more specifically on two differential budget midfield options.

Ings aside, Stuart Armstrong (£5.1m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.2m) are perhaps the stand-out names in this Southampton side from an offensive perspective.

Having not registered a single attacking return all season until Mark Hughes’ dismissal, Redmond has two Premier League goals and as many assists since Hasenhuttl took charge, also registering a brace in the 2-2 draw with Derby on Saturday.

Armstrong missed that FA Cup third round tie with an ankle problem, though his manager talked in terms of “a rest” so it is assumed the Scottish midfielder’s injury isn’t serious.

Armstrong has yet to register an attacking return under Hasenhuttl but has played a key role since the Austrian took charge, starting in five of the six matches that the ex-RB Leipzig head coach has overseen (being rested for the visit of Manchester City with one eye on the Chelsea fixture).

The former Celtic player did hit a purple patch just before Hughes’ sacking, though, scoring three goals in two games against Fulham and Manchester United.

Camarasa owners, tempted to play him at home to HUD?
Between him and AWB for the start for me.

Yeah currently starting him over AWB myself as thinking Watford will most likely score, and Huddersfield are poor

Yeah, Watford have goals in them but Palace are solid, hard to call. That screamer from Camarasa really caught my eye and he's on set pieces and pens. If he was 7m and playing for a slightly better side v HUD we wouldn't hesitate eh!

      Hennessey - Fabs
      Doherty - Kola - Trippier - Robertson - AWB
      Son - Martial - Haz - Pereyra - FAnderson
      Ings - Kane - Rashford

0.0 ITB, 2 FT, really trying to get Salah in for his upcoming good run. Any ideas? Resigned to having to lose Hazard really.

Any other option than Hennessey > Guaita, Haz > Salah, Trippier > Bednarek?

    Play one:
    A)Bednarek(lei(a))
    B)Doherty(mci(a))

Currently punting on A as leicester look toothless in attack or is it better to go B for attacking returns but likely to concede atleast 2 goals

A - chances of southampton parking the bus successfully are higher than Doherty bagging a free kick/assist from a cross. Expect city to be back to their best...

Southampton aren't going to park the bus against Leicester... they'll be trying to get something from that game (rightly or wrongly) - the chance of a CS by Southampton is pretty low. I'd go Doherty

Chelsea and relistically need a striker .Looks like higuan or cavani but may endup with wilson.Plus barella and paredes as mids .Atleast one if not both .Unlikely is I want to get chilwell at chelsea before he becomes a hit with another top club but very unlikely

We'll possibly look to bring in a loan signing this window or someone we've never heard of on the cheap, Rafa's unlikely to be given major funds with him out of contract in the Summer.

West Ham and the main concern is what would happen if Rice can't play DCM - so another quality player in that role would be excellent. A bit concerned at full back too (both sides) quality wise.

      1. Srv210

Yes they look very distraught on defensive side...I can also say the same for arsenal 🙂

Think we'll get Medel. Think FB is a bigger priority as Obiang is decent at DCM. Masuaku and Cresswell should be nowhere near a Prem 1st XI, so a quality LB would go down well.

West Ham-we're pretty vulnerable all over the pitch if we pick up a couple of injuries. The right full back position needs addressing. Zabaleta is getting on and Antonio is no full back. It's a shame Hendricks is injured.

Fredericks back soon but also not impressive. Antonio did such a good job there last couple of games I want to keep him there now our most direct and physical player. Zabaleta also one of the best in the PL still this season so far when playing. Wait for summer to sort that out I think, main problem is CB and CDM

Yup, where even is Ozil btw? Whole situation is so weird. Also apparently Carrasco move looking more a more likely:

'..They say the Gunners have made an offer to his agents and they now have ‘total approval’ over a transfer.

Although the player and the club seem to be in agreement, Arsenal will still need clearance from the Chinese side.'

I'd be surprised If there was tbh. For United that is. No guarantees for Champions League football.

Chelsea might sign a striker, that's about it. Maybe Spurs will get some depth.

Manchester United will always be an attractive club, with or without CL football.
Although I think they want to get a structured transfer policy in place, along with a full time manager - before shelling out multi million pounds in transfer fees and wages.

Spurs fan. First Gazzaniga should take Lloris place. Then an attacking LB transfer would be ideal. This seems the only weak position atm. Would also want a cb with more attacking threat, our corners are easy to defend over the last years, but cant see that happening unless Toby leaves now. My realistic preference would be Holebas as LB. With those 2 changes we are good to go.

Spurs fan. I'd just like to see Eriksen sign a new contract. I think the position we most need to improve is DM/CM. Ndombele would be the dream but with Dembele off and Wanyama broken we just need someone who can put themselves about a bit. I'd be happy with Kessie, Doucoure or Barrios. We won't get anyone though.

Desparate to get a defensive mid and left back.

Frenkie de Jong is my biggest wish for DM. Neves or Ndombele if not de Jong.

And for left back, there are not a lot of quality players available. Maybe Gaya, Digne or Alaba.

Scout Picks Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 22

Once again, one champion representing the community will take on the Scout Picks this week with a chance to win a prize at the end of the season!

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by 09:00 on Thursday.

The champion will be selected at random at 10:00 on Thursday and then asked to submit their XI by 10:00 on Friday.

This will require 11 picks, fitting into an 83.5m budget. There is no captain in the picks and the community champion must also stick to a designated FPL formation, and also must not include more than three players from a single team. Again, no chips or captaincy will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who has beaten the Scout Picks by the highest margin will receive a £100 Amazon voucher.

The weekly champion will be revealed in the midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline the Scout’s initial thinking around the choices. Our picks and the champion’s picks will be revealed, as usual, in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community champion fail to provide an appropriate squad, fitting the budget and formation constraints, an caretaker manager will be appointed to take control of the selection to represent the community for the gameweek in question.

Submit now if you’re interested for Gameweek 22.

    Good luck!

Not over Rashford but I expect him to score more due to Arnautovic's injury concern and Lacazette's gametime and not being explosive.

IF Arnautovic can avoid injuries, then him over Luka and LAcazette

its not that difficult and he is not that inconsistent as many say on here but slightly agree with one angle of ur point as fixtures dont matter for hazard as he is a big-game player so bringing only for the easy run and dumping for a difficult wouldnt work out as in theory.12 points behind "mo" consistent salah overall playing hell lot of mins less.Recency bias for last 2 weeks especially last gw playing with morata and barkley is clouding judgement. All main team players are back fit now.Still the best the best premium attacker in the game if u had him at 10.5 to 10.7
