Finding value in defence could be key to this week’s selection, with a number of big-hitting attackers going head-to-head with less-than-resilient opponents.

That has persuaded me to overlook Marcos Alonso, in spite of Chelsea’s plum home clash with Newcastle.

As the season unfolds under Maurizio Sarri, the Spaniard’s role as a left-back is curtailing his instincts to attack – indeed, Alonso is without a goal or an assist since Gameweek 11.

Patrick van Aanholt and Ricardo Pereira are the top two ranked defenders for goal attempts in the last four Gameweeks, with nine and eight respectively.

Both could also bring home clean sheets in home encounters with Watford and Southampton.

Cardiff centre-half Sean Morrison boasts a big goal threat for the visit of Fulham – his 19 shots in the box ranks third in defence.

The Bluebirds have also tightened up defensively, with three of their five clean sheets for the season arriving in the previous six.

Burnley wide man Dwight McNeil is my differential midfielder and looks a decent enabler at home to Fulham.

Costing just £4.4m, he has a goal and an assist in two appearances since being installed in the starting XI in Gameweek 20.

McNeil’s six shots and five efforts in the box both rank second for the Clarets in that period. Fulham, meanwhile, have conceded 28 goals on their travels, more than any other side.

Among form premium assets, Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks the most enticing this week. He takes top spot among my forward selection as he prepares to take on a West Ham side with a solitary clean sheet in their last six Gameweeks.

Strong underlying statistics are also in his favour. Over that same timeframe, the Gunners’ marksman has notched a record 11 big chances, scoring four and assisting a further two goals along the way.

Taking my top midfield slot is Eden Hazard, who is at home to a Newcastle outfit that has conceded the third-highest number of close-range efforts over their last six away matches.

He could do particularly well if Alvaro Morata fails to recover from a hamstring injury, as most of the Belgian’s attacking returns this season have come when the Spaniard has been off the pitch.

Mohamed Salah leads our captaincy poll and should get on the scoresheet against Brighton but I’m not sure he will beat Hazard and Aubameyang’s returns. Over their last six home matches, the Seagulls have only handed opponents seven big chances: the joint-second-best tally alongside Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

Manchester City also face a resilient defence when Wolves drop by but I still think one of Sergio Aguero or Leroy Sane is worth including. While Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops have performed well against top sides, they have conceded in all seven league meetings with Spurs, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Burnley and Cardiff look the best teams for bargain-hunting this week as they take on Fulham and Huddersfield respectively.

The Clarets’ backline looks particularly appealing having halved the number of shots they have faced since the goalkeeper’s jersey was wrestled from Joe Hart in Gameweek 20. James Tarkowski looks the safest option. I’ve also tentatively included Hart’s replacement Tom Heaton, even though he now faces competition from last season’s number one Nick Pope, who returned to action in the FA Cup this month following a lengthy injury lay-off.

With the festive schedule behind me, I’m turning attention to the battle against my own team’s slide. With so many heavy hitters performing well and there existing a strong template of defenders and cheaper midfielders, I am struggling to find many gems to help make my way back up the rankings.

This week looks a potentially intriguing one with many of the top sides enjoying favourable fixtures, though there are also good-looking home games for teams such as Everton and Cardiff. I really like the look of Victor Camarasa this week, who is in fine company in my midfield selections!

Getting the right heavy hitters in your own FPL teams looks key to surviving the next few months. My top picks this week are Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero, the latter of whom I think is being overlooked in everyone’s clamour to get Salah. Aguero looked razor-sharp against Liverpool and should lead the line against Wolves, who do always put up a fight against the top sides but may find the challenge too great at the Etihad.

It’s hard to separate Harry Kane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. I feel as though Kane may be over-performing on his FPL points based on the matches I’ve seen him play, whereas Aubameyang has been very unlucky. I’m reluctant to take Kane out but I do think Aubameyang can do some real damage to me this week and beyond.

My defence selection looks strong and I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of these players make the final squad. Lucas Digne, Andrew Robertson and Sead Kolasinac all offer so much going forward for their respective sides, while David Luiz and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are slightly less exciting picks but both have good-looking home games nevertheless.

Peter said…

Two premium midfielders (Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah) and two premium attackers (Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang) account for nearly half the budget this week, resulting in drastic cost-cutting measures elsewhere. My selections are therefore somewhat sullied as I scratch around at the unromantic venues of the Cardiff City Stadium and Turf Moor.

It’s an odd quirk of the fixture computer that the bottom two sides (Huddersfield and Fulham) visit two sides just outside the drop zone (Cardiff and Burnley respectively) and, despite going all-in on the pair of hosts, I must acknowledge the fragility of both the Bluebirds and the Clarets.

Nonetheless, I’ve gambled on penalty-stopper Neil Etheridge and Sol Bamba to shut out a Terriers attack with eight away goals all season. That said, Huddersfield’s far-from-irresistible force meets an infinitely movable object, with Cardiff’s the leakiest home defence in the division. I may, therefore, be relying on attacking returns from Bamba (level with Marcos Alonso with 16 attempts in the box this season) and from team-mate Callum Paterson, should he continue in his “out of position” role up front.

It’s a fairly similar story at Turf Moor, where I cross everything in hope that Burnley’s defence – almost as porous as Cardiff’s – can repel a Fulham attack which boasts just seven goals in 11 away games. Again, I may be relying on attacking returns from my defender, with James Tarkowski’s three goals leaving him behind only Shane Duffy as the top-scoring defender. I’m also hopeful that Ashley Barnes can continue his slightly improved form against Fulham’s much-maligned defence.

That at least frees up some cash for the aforementioned fab four who, at the time of writing, top the captaincy poll, suggesting I don’t need to wax lyrical about their potential this week.

Instead, I will seek to justify my selections of Lucas Digne and Richarlison, with Everton failing to record a clean sheet in the last eight Gameweeks and Richarlison managing just six shots on target during that time. What better game to bounce back from (from an attacking perspective at least) than against the Cherries, who also appear to have forgotten what a clean sheet looks like (Brighton in Gameweek 18 aside) and are haemorrhaging an average of three goals a game over the last six Gameweeks. This fixture has the smell of goals about it, and I’ve also added Callum Wilson to the squad in anticipation of a Sunday afternoon thriller.

The Community Champion

This week’s challenger is FPL_SUNNY, who is currently ranked just outside the top 20k having reached a season-high rank of 1,829 in Gameweek 10.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

fclackless’s Gameweek 10 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-44 remains the deficit to beat.

Have 2FT so kinda have to do one transfer at least. Maybe just sideways with Yoshida to Bednarek to save some funds. Other thinking is Felipe to Richarlison..

However I also really would like a City-player.. But Sane and B.Silva looking like the only realistic options, with the first one probably would mean a -4..

Scary not owning city attacker after seeing the stat below.

Manchester City have scored 96 goals in all competitions this season!

    96 - Man City
    77 - PSG
    71 - Barcelona
    70 - Tottenham
    68 - Sevilla
    66 - Arsenal

Non city attacker owners whats ur plan. are you planning to get one in or hide behind big sofa during city games?

Why? It lacks context, they have scored 16 of those goals in the last 2 weeks with a strong lineup at home against League One opposition. Take away 16 goals and they're on 80, granted still top, but not by a mile. Factor in rotation and individually they aren't necessarily more appealing than certain Spurs/Arsenal/Pool players.

I had triple city for 4 gw's and I went into each game full of confidence I was going to get points. In the end they ended up averaging me under points per game each and my rank plummeted. Done with pep roulette and their inconsistency for now... will reassess soon.

my rank took a hit as I held sterling and sane over xmas, moving from 4k to 20k. I have a really good feeling about owning them moving forward due to stats like this; hoping my patience pays off. I would recommend owning one of sterling, sane or kun, with sane price point putting him as a front runner. Last night perhaps showed there squad depth isnt massive so think people overthink their rotation

What happened over Xmas was a fluke not about rotation. No one expected them to lose to Palace and Leicester. Fernandinho was missing, they were unlucky with the type of goals they conceded and some chances they should have scored. I think they have the chance over the next 3 to help those with their assets to claw back the rank drops they suffered.

In the next 4, you only really want Anderson v Bournemouth but even that is an away game.

I would say plan ahead and sell him now so you have 2 FT next week and don’t need to take any hits.

Always nice to convert a FT into cash by downgrading a player who would otherwise be on your bench.

Since GW16, I’ve only had 2 captain returns: 1 kane assist and 1 kane goal.

So if you want a captain who will score decent points, don’t copy me.

I’m taking a risk and betting against Brighton’s home record by captaining Salah.

I would not waste 2 FT to switch from Anderson to Arnie. Anderson started every single game, Arnie is too fragile (which means another 1-2 FT in the near future) and Anderson PPG is slightly better (5.00 vs 4.93).

I am lost on how to bring in Salah and he seems to be increasing tonight, any help would be appreciated.

    A) Kane + Son + Snoddy > Salah + Sane + Kamara for a hit
(switch to 3-5-2 with very powerful mid and leaves me with 1.6 ITB, no Spurs cover for the good fixture though)

    B) Robbo + Son + Snoddy > TAA + Salah + Puncheon for a hit (Only way of upgrading Son to Salah without compromising from quality of remaining players assuming TAA will cover Robbo and Punch will be bench fodder)

    C) Alonso + Son > Salah + Bednarek for free (If I do this I have to play Jimenez or Snoddy this week which may easily mean loosing 4 pts advantage over A and B and feel like Alonso will explode this week)

    D) Do C next week, fix something else this week such as Snoddy> Camarasa to release some funds for the future

    Team atm:
    Fabianski
    Alonso Robbo Digne AWB
    Hazard Son Pogba Richarlison

You are absolutely right, I strengthened my overall squad before the festive period to deal with rotations but it did not work. All my players played every single game and I lost many points in bench. On the other hand, I do not want loose either of Doherty, Digne or Jimenez. Digne is placeholder for Perreira until GW27, and too much value is tied to Wolves guys (0.7 each). That's why I want to use Alonso or Robbo. Even if I go B, i will still loose Alonso next week to invest in midfield.

So its fair to say that come 8oclock monday nyt, il be hiding behind the sofa, worries me that i have no city cover, the only plus i can take out off it is that the points are so spread so many great attacking players, there amazine to watch, i have hazard, salah and kane all in the 1 team but time is coming that my wildcard could be played and an investment in city players could happen

I guess if you believe in the man U CS

See if rashford gets dropped, otherwise either him or Barnes to Kamara would enable Torrential trash to Man City player like Sane

At least time Mendy comes back...

I guess on Monday night you will find out for sure if you wanna be city less

For now, Rashford looks to be Solskjaer’s number one striker but all it takes is a poor display or two and we could see some positional/personnel changes....

watch him be anonymous next game and will be dogs dinner thereafter...

    Kane Auba

Is there an obvious move this week? Don't want to waste a move, but it feels like do 3 moves or a sideways move!

Without knowing your team, its hard to go into detail. But in general, it's wise to save the 2nd WC till the double GWs arrive.

Would you try and squeeze in Hazard this week? Have 2FTs and 0 ITB.
    Fab
    Robertson Digne WB
    Salah Sane Pogba Son
    Kane Rashford Ings

    Steele Doherty Bednarak Maskuku

Could do Sane & Son > Hazard & Perryra.

The Thing is on my WC a few weeks ago I chose Pogba and son over Hazard and it has moved me up the ranks so much

Sane and Son could easily outscore Haz, I think it seems like a risky move...

wouldn't be losing my city asset for Hazard, he is a bit of a troll and chelsea haven't looked great.

    Fab, Button
    Robbo, Doherty, Luiz, AWB, Bednarek
    Pogba, Son, Hazard, Anderson, Pereyra
    Kane, Jiménez, Kamara
    1FT and 4.0itb

No City and no Salah. Small red arrows in OR, but ML lead has tanked.
What would you do with this squad? Get Salah now? Get City now? Activate WC to upgrade a few spots? Thanks in advance.

personally would downgrade Luiz or Jimenez in order to go Son > Salah, 4 point hit, but salah will pay it back over the coming weeks..

i wouldnt im worried about aguero, had him on WC all week until yestuday. Jesus scored 4 and is full of confidence, aguero hasnt played since liverpool and may be ill. There is a chance he might start from bench or subbed early as pep will want to carry on the jesus momentum.

Very tempted by Sterling captain. Well rested and City score for fun at the Etihad. I expect them to put 3 past Wolves. City assets are very underestimated here. Their next 3 are better than Liverpool and Spurs yet their fixtures are viewed as bad.

Which moves would you do with this team?

    Fabianski - Button
    Alonso - Robertson - Digne - Kolasinac - Doherty
    Hazard - Sané - Pogba - Richarlison - Højbjerg
    Kane - Rashford - Jiménez

    FT: 2
    ITB: 0.8m

    A) Alonso/Hazard --> TAA/Salah
    B) Hazard/Jiménez --> Salah/Kamara
    C) Alonso/Højbjerg/Sané/Jiménez --> TAA/Puncheon/Salah/Kamara (-8)
    D) Alonso/Sané/Rashford --> TAA/Salah/Kamara (-4)
    E) Robertson/Sané/Rashford --> TAA/Salah/Kamara (-4)
    F) Other suggestions?

    Feeling a bit lost...

in a similar situation myself, and i'm looking at A, but i can't justify losing hazard when he has a home fixture against Newcastle...

    Lössl
    Alonso TAA Digne Kiko

    A) Lossl to Guaita
    B) Hamer to Speroni
    C) Something more exciting

    Kane Auba
    (Button - AWB - Jimenez - Doherty)
    2ft 0.3itb

Difficult week to make choices - but hate wasting transfers. These are some options if you could help out.
    A) Hazard to Sterling (risky, but keen on getting city cover back).
    B) Martial or Anderson to Richarlison (better fixture but sideways potentially).
    C) Martial or Anderson to Bilva (city cover, but may not play every game)
    D) Digne to Bednarek (looks odd, but plenty of cash for midfield upgrades)
    E) Other option.

Thinking of doing Martial (Have Pogba too) to Sane this week and Son to Salah next week.

Would (c) Hazard - he should finally come good, or Auba, and having Son for his last game sounds nice. Also, probably will keep FAnderson for now.

    Am I right?

    Fab
    Tripper - Luiz - TAA
    Pogba - Rich - Haz(c) - Martial - Anderson
    Kane - Jiménez

    Pat - AWB - Schindler - Ings

    captain

    A) hazard
    B) salah
    C) kane

    and why him?
I usually I go with Kane, but if everybody picks a midfielder...
