Why I’m considering a Liverpool defensive double-up

The festive period is always an exciting time of the season for FPL managers but boy was it hectic.

It feels good to return to normality now with more time to mull over our transfer decisions each week.

Time to double up on the Liverpool defence?

The Reds have been rock solid defensively this season with Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) keeping everything under control and Alisson (£5.9m) performing much better than his predecessors.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have conceded just ten goals in their opening twenty-one matches and they face just one of the current top six in the next ten Gameweeks (Manchester United away in Gameweek 27).

A defenesive double up looks good on paper with any combination of Andrew Robertson (£6.6m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m), van Dijk or Alisson likely to bring home the clean sheet points for managers between now and the next international break (yes there is another one).

Will Eden Hazard troll his owners again?

The Belgian has frustrated his backers in recent weeks with three blanks in his last four appearances against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Patience is required with Eden Hazard (£11.1m) as often has been the case. He’s an FPL asset that must be held long term to reap the benefits as his hauls are unpredictable. Watch him bag a brace this weekend to stick it to the sellers.

Despite three blanks in the last four, Hazard ranks first alongside Richarlison (£6.9m) among midfielders for shots in the box (10) over the same period as well as creating ten chances for his team mates. Some would say he’s due…

Why sell Richarlison before Bournemouth at home?

The Brazilian is the second most-transferred out player ahead of Gameweek 22 with more than 110,000 sales. Only his fellow countryman Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) has been shipped by more managers this week.

Selling Richarlison ahead of a plum home tie is risky business. The Cherries have conceded eighteen goals in the last six Gameweeks!

The Toffees looked jaded in the 1-0 defeat to Leicester back in Gameweek 21, but a rest for some of their first-team players in the FA Cup should see them looking much fresher in Sunday’s matchup at Goodison Park.

Raheem the dream differential?

Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has eighteen attacking returns (nine goals, nine assists) in eighteen appearances in 2018/19, yet is owned by just 10.2% of managers ahead of Monday’s home tie against Wolves.

For those managers who are down the rankings or are chasing a lead in a mini-league, the Englishman could prove to be a devastating differential over the coming weeks.

Manchester City gave us a timely reminder of what they can do to teams with a 9-0 thrashing of Burton Albion in the EFL Cup midweek. Sterling was an unused substitute in that match which makes him even more appealing for Gameweek 22, maybe even as captain.

Is Marcus Rashford being overhyped?

The young striker has been excellent since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins at Old Trafford, scoring 31 FPL points, but is his place in the starting XI as secure as most people seem to think?

There’s a lot of competition for places at United. Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) isn’t going to be content with a place on the bench and will be pushing for starts.

Will Solskjaer play them both up front together, or could we see Rashford moved back to the wing where he would be in competition with the likes of Anthony Martial (£7.3m), Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m), Jesse Lingard (£6.8m) and Juan Mata (£6.2m).

For now, Rashford looks to be Solskjaer’s number one striker but all it takes is a poor display or two and we could see some positional/personnel changes.

Aaron Wan-Don’t-Bench-Me-Bissaka

Arguably the greatest £4.0m FPL asset of all time has picked up three clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks.

Crystal Palace have looked a lot more stable defensively in recent weeks since Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) took over from Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) between the sticks.

Five of the next six fixtures look good for  Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) to get starts in our teams rather than having to look at his points on the bench.

The FPL General has three top-500 finishes in the last four seasons. You can follow him on Twitter HERE.

If you need to move this week I like Barnes, but if you can hold off Ings should be back post Leicester and is worth considering.

    Fabs
    Digne Robbo TAA
    Hazard Son Martial Anderson Camarasa
    Kane Auba
    (Button - AWB - Jimenez - Doherty) 2ft 0.3itb

Difficult week to make choices - but hate wasting transfers. These are some options if you could help out, mostly to raise cash..
    A) Digne down to Bednarek/Cedric to free up funds for midfield.
    B) Martial to cheaper mid (Fraser, Pereya, Redmond).
    C) Fabs to Guaita.
    D) Just do a sideways one week punt (e.g. Martial to Richarlison/Bilva) and reassess.
    E) Burn transfer.
    F) You need to sacrifice a big hitter to get Salah or Sterling this week.

    1. Robson-Canoe

Probably B/D with Martial to Richarlison/Pereyra and then F next week (sacrificing Auba to bring Salah in)

Probably what Tony said. B or D this GW, or save FT and then Salah/Sterling after that.

        Thanks - that seems sensible.
I wasn't considering losing Fabs at all until I read about Balbuena. WH won't keep cleanies for sure now, as if they ever did!

Like Martial to Fraser or Pereyra the most of these options

Personally tired of Fabs but having AWB makes me hesitant to swap to Guaita

Son to Bilva - you will have to sell Son anyway next week.

    This week: Snodgrass > Richarlison
    Next week: Martial + Alonso + Auba > Salah + Rashford + TAA (-4)

Does that sound like a sensible plan?

    1. ESilva23
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

If you do Snodgrass to a budget (assuming he's currently your fifth mid) like Camarasa, would you still need to take a hit next week?

      1. Robson-Canoe
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

Unfortunately he's my 4th mid - I could afford someone up to 6.7(Pereyra?) in order to keep Alonso next week and just do Auba + Martial > Salah + Rash for free
Not sure I prefer Pereya to Rich though

    Fab
    Alonso Lovren Shaw Doherty AWB
    Sterling Hazard Pogba Rich Holjberg
    Auba Mitro Rashford
    2.2 itb 2ft
Im going to get Salah for either Hazard (most likely) or Sterling or Auba next week.
I'm thinking Fab to Guita this week to free up funds and Lovren to? Kola maybe. If I get TAA I'll need a hit to find more funds to get Salah next week

What's your view on the captaincy situation for this week (for non Salah owners):
    A) Auba (whu)
    B) Hazard (NEW)
    C) Kane (MUN)

    1. AuFeld
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

I'm on Auba for now. He's been under performing and I wouldn't want to be without him when he starts converting more big chances. WHU defense has been atrocious over the last four. The have conceded: 21 shots on target, 12 big chances, and 7 goals. The opposition over the last four makes matters worse as BHA, BUR, SOU, and WAT are not known for their attacking threat.

Hazard looks good, escpecially with Pedro and Willian healthy. He's likely to start back in as a false nine where he seems to flourish. His opposition NEW can be stubborn. Over the last four NEW has conceded: 7 goals, 22 shots on target, and ten big chances.

Kane is in fine form. One may argue that he is over performing and due to regress. MUN defense has improved over the last four under OGS, but the opposition over the last four are not known for their attacking prowess: NEW, BOU, HUD, and CAR. I think MUN defense will be tested vs Spurs.

Lovely passer. Looked like possibly a great talent for the future. Though unfortunately not disciplined enough, or of the right character for LFC.

    Any suggestions to this team?

    2 FTs and 1.0 ITB

    Fabianski - Hamer
    Kolasinac - TAA - Doherty - Digne - AWB
Hazard - Anderson - Son- Pogba - Gunarson
    Kane - Auba - Jimenez

Plan for next week Son & Auba -> Salah & Rashford, to achive this without a loss i have 0,3 anf 1FT for this GW.

Thanks for advice and good luck

Arnoutavic’s brother has announced that he wants to leave... Claims he wants to challenge for titles in China which roughly translates to i’m going for the money!!!

He's been at it for a while (his brother/agent). I think he'll stay.

Well he (agent) was trying to angle a move to Man Utd in the summer wasn't he, saying that he was good enough to be playing in the CL, and a top 4 team.
Interesting that 6 months later the allure of the Chinese super league now supersedes his desire to be playing at the highest level in Europe.
        I wonder why?

...I've not read the article, can't find it on BBC, or Sky.

Who wouldnt? Play for a mid table club in London or go to China for a real change of furniture AND get paid silly money at the same time.

    HELP NEEDED!

    - Got 2FTs here and don't want to burn one. (0.7 itb)
    A). Fab > Guaita
    B). Snodders > ??
    C). Wilson > Arnie (a week early)

    - For those of you that watched the latest Scoutcast, I can only use Jonty's team as similar to mine in the respect that this GW looks very tricky, but after that i like where it is going. (see below)

    Fab
    Alonso - TAA - Digne - AWB
    Salah - Sane - Sonny
    Kane - Rashford - Wilson

    Bench: Button; Snodders, Doherty, MGW

    Cheers all.

Not tempted to move out Son, you'll have to next week anyway, I assume?

          I'm all in on that.

I'd hold off the Wilson to Arnie move.
One could be at Chelsea, whilst the other is in China next week.

Could you just free up some cash for a double change next week - sideways Alonso to Luiz? Or downgrade Digne to Bednarek (your defence ain't cheap)? Or Snodders to el cheapo?

Been thinking about the best way to do this. But I can't ditch Alonso before NEW.

Snodgrass can go in a double change next week along with Sonny (for Pogba & a 6.8m mid)

    Bottom on the last article.

Rashford or Arnie for a FT?
Slightly worried about this Chinese bid turning Arnie's head.

Wouldn't do that myself, stops you being able to get Salah in.

Maybe ok for most games but in those that you should be captaining him in it's a massive risk.

Considered it myself but two is enough considering other good options around the 5 million mark.
