Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

Assuming Wilson doesn't play (he's 50/50 and didn't train so unlikely he gets the full 90 if he plays at all) who is a good replacement off my bench?

    A) Digne (already playing three defenders)
    B) Jiminez

Digne the one that sticks out there - at home against Bournmouth and attacking returns always possible with him. Everton may respond well after their AGM earlier this week with confidence restored in Manager as long term appointment.

It’s the CS that is leading to me selling him as well as the strong bench meaning I would have to play him above one of Robertson,Alonso,TAA

Barnes will possibly getsome points over the next 2: 0+

Ings gets 0 points over next 2.

If you don’t need to field the 3rd striker over the next 2, do you even need to make the xfer?

I’m in a similar position with Matt Ryan. I could easily make a change, but I don’t need to as I have a playing keeper and the second keeper spot is not required.

So many dithcing Auba above Kane to get Salah.

Auba is underrated on here, remember he's still the top scoring forward in the game and delivers also from the left. Laca not nailed, so Auba will sometimes play in the middle, sometimes on the left. And really unlucky not to get 2-3 ore goals last match, he's due for a haul.

And Kane is playing very deep parts of the matches, depending on penalties to score.

Both are good options, IMO not clear that Auba is the one to ditch.

The way I see it if Salah is the perma-captain then why would you pay the extra for Kane? Auba has better xG, better xGI and I would argue that his fixtures are better than Kane’s over the next 6. Kane has looked like a broken down donkey all season and his last 2 returns have had an element of luck. Son has been great for him and once he departs do people actually think Lamella and Moura will offer the same attacking fluency. Spurs have been spanking teams and all Kane can muster is a single attacking return most week with minimal bonus. No thanks

Whilst I agree that Aubameyang might be the one to keep, you can't really say that he has better fixtures than Kane. Auba has blanked in nearly every game he has played a top 6 side. He has Chelsea and City coming up and also Huddersfield who could frustrate in the same manner you think Newcastle and Leicester City might frustrate Spurs

        1. AuFeld
          • 7 Years

IMO, it's easier to predict where and when Auba will show up to put up points. RE Auba's tougher matches in GW 23 and 25, he can be covered by owning and captaining Salah or Hazard.

        I guess we'll see.
Spurs have managed to do well without Son in the past.
After the Utd game Spurs' fixtures are pretty much perfect.

Hazard is a long term option imo.

        Yes, well, maybe. 😕

If he was 10m or maybe even 10.5m then he would be. If you bought at 10.5m then perhaps he just about is. But at 11.1m he has to be a captain option because NO player will justify that valuation without being captained sometimes (other than perhaps over short spells).

Essentially I think Hazard is too expensive to be a set-and-forget and too unpredictable to be a reliable captain. Little genius as he undoubtedly is.

    My team: Fabianski Stekelenburg
    Doherty Digne TAA AWB Kolasinac
    Salah Pogba Martial Richarlison Diangana
    Kamara Aubameyang Kane
    1.7 ITB, one free transfer?

got to be WB. Watford aren't bad away (check yourself they like to score), Digne on set pieces and martial is a quality player and could be involved in a goal even if united lose.

On a WC right now. Which should I go for, A or B?

    (A)
    Etheridge (Guaita)
    Alonso*, Robertson*, Digne (Doherty, AWB)
    Salah, Hazard, Pogba*, Fraser, Camarasa
    Kane, Arnie* (Kamara)

    or

    (B)
    Etheridge (Guaita)
    D.Luiz*, TAA*, Digne (Doherty, AWB)
    Salah, Hazard, Sterling*, Fraser, Camarasa
    Kane, Auba* (Kamara)

    Current team:

    Fabianski (Patricio)
    Luiz Digne Kolasinac (AWB Yedlin)
Sane (VC) F.Anderson Richarlison Lingard (Lerma)
    Kane Aubameyang (C) Wilson

    2FTs, 0.9M ITB.

How much of a necessity is Salah? I am considering either ditching Aubameyang to fit him in or reshaping the midfield so I effectively have Salah, Anderson, Richarlison and 2 bench fodder.

Yeah but it isn't always up-to-date. I think it is Auba anyway I was just checking.

pretty sure auba handed laca a penalty last year to boost his confidence. so i think auba is the taker.

Fraser, Wilson and King all face late fitness tests. Classic Howe trolling, they'll all play this weekend

    A) Kola to TAA this week
    B) Save and play Kola against WHU
    C) Hennessey to Guaita (other goallie is Fabianski) to free up funds for Martial to Sane or KDB next week (or can also choose do Kola to TAA next week)

Any suggestions to this team? Who to Captain?
    A. Hazard

    2 FTs and 1.0 ITB

    Fabianski - Hamer
    Kolasinac - TAA - Doherty - Digne - AWB
