Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

Probably, but he has had a bit of a rock n roll jetset lifestyle these past few days, flying to Africa for the African player of year awards, then to Dubai for Arab player awards, then back to Liverpool today, after playing second half v Wolves on Monday... will he be full of his usual zip against brighton on Saturday?

Brighton at home can be a horrible team to pay against at the best of times... Liverpool only beat them 1-0 at anfield earlier in the season... Liverpool could also be entering a crisis, after picking up injuries and losing a 7 point league lead and exiting the FA cup in the space of a few days.

A draw/defeat would really put the cat amongst the pigeons

In the last six home games Brighton have conceded 81 shots, the fourth worst in the division.

They have also conceded the highest number of chances, 28, down the right flank (I assume the attacking flank is the right flank ?)

Shots conceded is way too crude to be of any use. What type of shots were they?

Anyone who watches Brighton play at home knows they are tough - they have only conceded 11 goals in 10 home games - not far off the best home defensive record in the league after Liverpool (3 goals conceded at home)

9th for conceding the most number of shots on target in the last 6 home games - 25 shots

I think the stats suggest they have been a bit lucky and have over achieved defensively

...and now they play Liverpool who are averaging 3 goals a game in the last 7 games and are second highest behind Spurs for goals scored with 14 goals in the last 6 away games ... mmm ... 😉

That’s the point stats can be so decieiving 😉 Shots and shots on target are right up there with XG and XA in the “dodgy for FPL decision making” bucket.

Which defence is statistically better - conceding 100 shots and 10 goals, or conceding 50 shots and 20 goals?

Can you be lucky for 11 games - Seems a long time to consistently concede so few goals at home?

Plus the fact that they only conceded one away to Liverpool? There definitely aren’t many tougher defences to play against in the premiership than away to Brighton it’s not fashionable, it if you watch the games you’ll see why 🙂

Yes that’s why it’s considered best practise in elite game preparation to fly thousands of miles in the days beforehand to several junket waste of time award ceremonies.

Really gives a player that extra 1 or 2 % they need to perform on the day lol

Oh I thought utd went to Dubai for a training camp?

Maybe they are doing this new found method of game preparation which involves playing on Monday night, flying to Africa Tuesday, sitting at a nonsense award ceremony, flying to Dubai Tuesday, taking part in. Another nonsense award ceremony, flying to England Thursday, play game Saturday - apparently it’s really catching on as a way to ensure players are 100% at their best and even give them that crucial extra 1 or 2% that makes the difference at the top 😉

I don’t think there’s a massive doubt that he’ll play - but how good has his preparation been with that week?

These games can surprise, especially after such a disruptive week for Mo, and playing against a horrible Brighton defence, one of the best home defences in the league (check out the list of teams they are conceding less than at home - it’s quite a long list )

Juast to add. Ralph wanted to look at him before Jan window to assess his squad. He said he would give him 2 games. He has now confirmed Fraser Forster is not in the clubs pans. So its McCarthy #1 for now, but he has no room for error

Best way to save cash if needed? Think medium term and to aid Salah-fund.

    A) Pereya/Fraser (instead of Richarlison)
    B) Arnie/Barnes/Wilson (instead of Rashford)
    C) Guaita (instead of Fabianski - have Button)
    D) Auba (sell Kane - A/B/C means losing Auba next week)

    a) Torreira (whu)
    b) Armstrong (lei)
    c) Murphy (HUD)

Murphy has the easier fixture but seems like a low scoring game, Armstrong had a minor injury but his manager said he is fit and Torreira will surely start in a probable high scoring game but is a DM. Any help appreciated.

      B
Lovren is a horrible defender. Even if recovered he will lose his place very quickly.
All the goals conceded come from his side, he was marking both Kun and Sane when they scored... speaks a lot.

Nice little bit of analysis from Lars Sivertson on Guardian Football Weekly re: Liverpool:

"If you look at the last seven Premier League winners, when they went out of the FA Cup and out of Europe, you’ll actually see that 11 out of 14 cup runs were done by mid-March.

“So it is a trend that the teams that go on to win the league are usually done with all this cup business pretty early in the season.

“Specifically with Liverpool, under Klopp they have almost a quarter of a point extra as an average points pick-up, if they have four or more rest days ahead of a game.

“If they have four or more rest days ahead of a game they pick up 2.11 points on average, whereas if they have three days or fewer, their average is 1.87.

“So we know for a fact that Liverpool struggle when they have more games.

“They are less likely to win if they have fewer days in which to rest.

“The trend was very similar for Klopp when he was at Dortmund"

Not at all, statistically they are pretty spot on on goals conceded.
Home fixtures (last four) they have 4.4 xGC and 4 GC. So they average 1 GC per match at home for eve, ars, che, cpa.
Three out of those four are good attacking sides. Liverpool scoring more than 2 is unlikely.

I guess Auba instead of Sterling may seem more sensible, but fancy Sterling to do really well over the next 4 with less rotation...451 when Kamara has a bad fixture (or if he's terrible tomorrow)

Choose one between Sterling and Sane.
Then choose between the city man and Hazard and upgrade one of your fodder forwards.

holebas is a troll and kola can get attacking points which could lead to bonus.

Stay away from holebas he will haunt you.

Hazard (lol) - Fraser - Lingard - Walcott - Mahrez

Is there any sense in keeping Martial now?

Have 2fts and can't easily figure out a move this week (either him out to someone of the same price or cheaper, or Fabs to cheaper keeper). Will most likely get Rashford or Pogba soon to cover Utd.

I think Auba is more likely to bag a goal or two than Hazard, yet I think Hazard on his day is the best player in the league.

Im biased towards Haz. The article is giving me mixed feelings too, RMT recommends one of these heavily yet the author thinks otherwise.

    Thoughts? 🙂

What do we think of this WC team? What am I missing / What do I need?

    Gua / Foster

    Pereira / Trent / Digne

    Snod / Richarlison / Salah / Sané / Deulofeu

    Kane / Aubameyang

    (Jonny,Bednarek,Kamara)

    0.9mil in bank

I've hesitant about having united in this week since they're playing spurs... is this a mistake?

I could do Auba > Rash & Rich > Haz?

United have a good run after Spurs though.
Maybe look at Martial instead of Richarlison - after this week perhaps?

    RMWCT

    Guita (Lloris)
    Pereira TAA AWB Robertson (Bednarak)
    Salah Sane Pogba Hazard Camarasa
    Rashford Aubam (Kamara)

    Moves would be:

    Fab > Lloris
    Digne > Pereira
    Doherty > Robertson
    Shaw > Bednarak
    Sterling > Sane
    Pererya > Camarasa
    Jimenez > Rashford

Downgrade Lloris to 4.5 or lower to rotate with Guaita
      Upgrade Kamara to Barnes

Would say the opposite, keep Lloris but ditch Guaita for Hamer and keep the 0.2 imo - otherwise good team
