Watchlist Update – Firmino breaks into forwards selection

After the hectic Christmas schedule came to an end in Gameweek 21, we have finally been able to update our Watchlist.

This feature helps us keep track of the best Fantasy Premier League options to monitor over the coming matches.

It is split by position and uses a variety of factors to decide the rankings.

The top story coming into Gameweek 22 is probably not a huge surprise in that we have given Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) a return to the summit of the midfield section.

The Egyptian’s form is hard to ignore, with three double-figure hauls in his last four matches and appealing fixtures on the horizon. A trip to Brighton this weekend might be harder than some imagine, but home matches against Crystal Palace and Leicester afterwards look like routine outings for Liverpool. In Gameweek 25 and 26, Salah will face the shaky defences on offer at West Ham and Bournemouth.

That means Eden Hazard (£11.1m) drops to second place, partially caused by blanks in both of his last two fixtures. However, we still believe the Chelsea man is a good option long-term with strong underlying statistics and decent fixtures too. Newcastle, Huddersfield and Brighton are the next three players to visit Stamford Bridge, while the defences of Arsenal, Bournemouth and Manchester City, their next three away trips, have been suspect recently.

The biggest riser in the midfield category is Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) as he sneaks in between Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) and Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) to sit in seventh place. The fixtures are good for Everton, who have Bournemouth, Southampton and Huddersfield as their next three, all of which are vulnerable through the centre. Sigurdsson himself has two goals and an assist in his last three starts. The inclusion of the cheaper Richarlison (£6.9m), who still has a chance of playing out of position as a centre-forward, is the main reason why we can’t really push the Icelandic international any higher.

At the other end of the midfield section, Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) comes back onto the Watchlist to replace Roberto Pereyra (£6.3m). The Bournemouth winger is currently an injury doubt (hamstring), which is why we can’t really put him any higher, but he looks capable of performing very well over the next few weeks if he’s fit. The left-sided midfielder is second for chances created over the last four Gameweeks and faces sides either vulnerable on their right or to ser pieces in each of his next six.

We also see Anthony Martial (£7.3m) drop down several places. The Frenchman has been a victim of Paul Pogba (£8.4m) and striker Marcus Rashford‘s (£7.3m) success.

The forwards’ section has also seen some changes, not least including the removal of Rashford’s injury doubt, although we still see him as a slight rotation risk with Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sánchez potentially waiting in the wings.

Harry Kane (£12.6m) remains top of the pile based on his better fixtures compared to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m), although it’s a close-run thing between the two strikers.

Raúl Jiménez (£6.4m) and Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) remain the tried and tested budget forwards, while two new names have joined the forwards ranks just below them.

Roberto Firmino‘s (£9.2m) recent form, four goals in his last two matches, forced him into our thinking. He also benefits from Salah’s favourable fixture run but has registered more penalty box shots than him in the last six Gameweeks.

Threatening to become one of the new cheaper forwards offering excellent value is Ashley Barnes (£5.6m). He comes onto the list in place of the injured (and similarly priced) Danny Ings (£5.6m) having recorded eight shots on target since Gameweek 18. Only Rashford and Pogba have managed more in that time.

Further down, Callum Wilson (£6.7m) drops to the bottom of the list in light of his recent injury doubt, Eddie Howe revealing he has a hamstring problem ahead of Gameweek 22.

Not much has changed in defence, with Andrew Robertson (£6.6m) still the best option as Liverpool’s fixtures carry more clean sheet potential. We were close to adding Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m) and encouraging a double-up on the Reds’ backline but we’d like to see which options are fit to line-up in Gameweek 22 before pushing that angle.

Meanwhile, Matt Doherty (£5.2m) and Lucas Digne (£5.2m) remain the cheaper options, although their popularity has seen them both move out of the budget category.

Jan Bednarek (£3.9m) keeps his place on the Watchlist as he continues to hold down a spot in Southampton’s defence. The Polish international has started the last six Premier League matches in a row and can help any Wildcarders spend a little extra elsewhere.

The biggest changes in the Goalkeeper section over December saw Ederson (£5.6m) drop all the way from the top three to the bottom of the pile. Manchester City are now without a clean sheet in eight Gameweeks, making his expensive price not worth paying at all.

Crystal Palace’s new number one Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) offers the best value right now. He appears to be the starting goalkeeper at Selhurst Park and the fixtures indicate there could be more clean sheets on the way for him, including the trip to Southampton in Gameweek 24 and a home match against Fulham in Gameweek 25.

    From Warnock's press conference:

"I don’t go on the message boards any more. I find myself thinking how I can reply so I can’t do it anymore. Fans will always have opinions. That’s what football’s all about. There’s so much to talk about. We just have to be patient. All of us."

Interesting he reads the message boards.....

Yes. Hoping he repays me for his captain fail last GW. If not, he's probably the one who makes way for Salah next week rather than Auba as I'll know I can't trust him to captain in plum home fixtures.

Yeah I'm giving him another shot. I feel like a lot of people have been turned off after being burnt by him last week. Had he scored against Southampton, which he easily could have, the feeling about captaining him this week would be a lot different. I'm not especially confident but he definitely has a better fixture than Salah.

I have Auba and Haz (no Salah).

I think Liverpool will find BHA resilient
Haz at home should go well but a) always lets me down b) Newcastle have had some great defensive efforts recently
Auba - West Ham are the defence that just keeps on giving (my Captain)

Haz works over the season, but no longer as a captain for me. I've made my peace with that......

I must admit I like the look of it. Though you have 4 standout captains each week which on the downside makes it even harder to get right. Looks fantastic for this week but I'm pretty sure you'll downgrade an attacker very soon to upgrade 4th or 5th mids

So is there a group-think trap of epic proportions being set with regards Salah captaincy this weekend?

For context - after Liverpool, the next best home defence in the league is Chelsea with 8 conceded, and Spurs/Palace with 9 conceded...

Brighton have only conceded 11 (!)

If Liverpool are going to score more than one or two it's going to be totally against the trend of how the season has gone to date. Shots and shots on target are as close to meaningless as stats can get without coupling them with the eye test - many effective defences are purposely setup to allow as many shots as the opposition wishes to take - when the shots are coming from certain areas.

Now partner Brighton's obvious defensive effectiveness with

    (a) Salah's questionable preparation (Playing on Monday night, flying to Africa Tuesday, sitting at a nonsense award ceremony, flying to Dubai Tuesday, taking part in another nonsense award ceremony, flying to England Thursday, play game Saturday - not a good way to ensure that crucial extra 1 or 2% that makes the difference?)

    (b) Liverpool's questionable recent spell (injuries, 7 point lead lost to main rivals, exiting FA Cup... it’s been a bad few days for them... if they don’t beat Brighton you can bet your bottom dollar the word “crisis”will be getting dusted off by every press establishment under the sun)

    and

    (c) Their recent record v Brighton (could only muster a 1-0 win at Anfield this season)

And are the ingredients are there for a possibly disappointing afternoon? The tea leaves are certainly not pointing towards a haul at the very least, will be very interesting to see how it pans out.

It's also interesting when you look at Salah's record in away games against 'Good' defences this year, with those teams home goals conceded record in brackets - remember Brighton have only conceded 11:

      - Lei away - 2 pts (10)
      - Spurs away - 2 pts (9)
      - Chelsea away - 2 pts (8)
      - Arsenal Away - 2 pts (10)
      - Man City Away - 2 points (10)

He also struggled home to Everton & home to Man City (3 points in each game) so teams definitely can frustrate him. Ordinarily you'd have to think he should score vs. Brighton... but something tells me there could be a shock in waiting with the factors mentioned above, particularly Liverpool's recent body blows of losing to Man City & exiting the FA cup - these defeats impact morale whether or not it was a second string.

I can't imagine however many thousand airmiles he clocked up are ideal preparation either...

But hey-ho, if he hauls it's all good!

I'm genuinely suprised I've seen so little caution urged in relation to captaining him - if the circumstances, preparation, and opposition were better aligned, there would be no issue.

How many games has Salah prepared for away to one of the best defences in the league, after playing on Monday, flying to Africa Tuesday, Flying to Dubai Wednesday, Flying back to England Thursday - at a time when they've just been beaten by their title rivals in a 6 pointer, and exited the cup?

But it's important we don't get sucked into group think - oftentimes any opinion, regardless of how well supported, will be unpopular when it contradicts the group-think of the week.

You're trying to create a group think and have been constantly. Just relax Maximus and focus on your own team. Rather than talking people out of captaining Salah, you should be promoting who you are captaining and why. You come across as a bit desperate. I want to help you

Not at all - you're obviously very confident in your choice so I hope it works out for you 🙂

But we can all agree a well informed decision is a better decision, and whilst going against the group think will almost always be unpopular, it doesn't mean we shouldn't ensure people are making their decisions with as much information as possible behind them.

It can be more popular to take the 'Ah it's Salah vs. Brighton' approach & hope its worked out ok come 5pm Saturday... but that's too much like the ostrich sticking it's head in the sand.

I've had Hazard as captain for the last 2 game weeks and he keeps the armband this week (and I am a Salah owner mate) It was a very close call between the 2 of them for me. Reason Hazard keeps it is because I'm showing patience for this week. Though I'm more than aware that Salah will more than likely score at least one.

My point is you are trying to scare people aware from captaining him. I've seen a few posts from you doing exactly that. Your messages are insightful, but it becomes a bit too much and sounds desperate after a while.

I bet your ML rivals are on Salah and you fear a Salah masterclass.

Becoming accustomed to seeing facts being presented and questions being asked can only help you in the long run, the conclusions you draw from those facts and questions are your own mind you 🙂

Although i do have to say, based on our limited exchange above, fear does seem to form a large part of your thought processes - (Trying to 'scare' people, 'fear' a Salah Masterclass etc) - but you shouldn't be afraid to ask questions, research facts, present those facts, challenge popular opinion when you feel it needs to be challenged etc.

At least you do disagree with the group think on Salah captain this week - that's a good start 😉

'the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group, resulting typically in unchallenged, poor-quality decision-making.' Yes he's the runaway leader but that doesn't make it 'groupthink'. For a start the poll isn't even a group decision, it's everyone's individual opinions.

‘Unchallenged’ - show me where Salah has been challenged as a captain pick?

‘Poor quality’ - relative to the rest of the big 6 (THIS WEEK) is he a better quality pick than Haz, Sterling, Kane, Auba - with the factors I pointed out above?

Eurgh, the poll isn't a group decision, and most people vote for who they will captain - a lot of people on here don't have Auba (who I personally rate the best pick this week) so they are mainly picking between Salah and Haz - it's close but I'm leaning Salah, seemingly a lot of people are leaning the same way.

The poll shows the majority of the group’s sentiment is to captain Salah - when you look at the factors at play, it looks like a sub optimal majority opinion when compared to the alternatives, as has been outlined above.

Captain poll suggests overwhelming majority of those who took it are planning to... looks like a good case of group think, not sure how many have scratched into the factors at play in he run up to this game.

Clearly a Salah non owner and pretty delusional comments over the past 24 hours. In fact you copied and pasted the same comment about Salah's lack of preparation and 'rock n roll jetset lifestyle' 3 times in the past day - I would say you are scared stiff about him hauling.

Of course I’m not going to retype every time am I?

It’s a very valid series of facts and points that are up for debate, although it’s fascinating the overly emotional response it triggers in some folks though - The words desperate, delusional, a simpleton, scared have all been used at various times in his thread, yet aren’t accompanied by any reasoning other than ‘it’s salah v Brighton - captain him lol’

Sometimes pointing out some simple facts will really sting when folks have overlooked them 😉

It’s your call buddy, just make the decision with eyes wide open.

A lot of these facts are not being relayed this week, maybe they’re not going to have an influence on things at all, and Salah will brace, who knows

But it’s lways better to make the decision armed with as much information as possible

. . . I’ve been mulling over changing it to Sterling all week. Was hoping Klopp would mention Salah in his pressers to help finalize my decision. 70/30 in favour of Salah atm

This is a bit of a Rock vs A Hard Place situation. What’s stronger, Salahs ability to get points or Brighton’s ability to concede few of any goals. Let’s say there’s 3 outcomes, Salahs ability wins the day, Brighton’s ability wins the day, neither budges, Salah ‘just’ gets 1 return and Brighton don’t concede anymore goals.

I’d say the likelihood is Salah gets just 1 goal, followed by Salah wins out followed by Brighton win out. IMHO the balance tips stringnly towards Salah getting a return.

Does that mean I C him? Possibly not. But on the balance of things I don’t think it’s a bad option.

I think it's all relative - Captaincy is the single most important decision you'll make each week - and its effectively limited to 6 players in the game for the vast majority of serious FPL players (Salah, Kane, Sterling, Kun, Auba, Haz)

Salah is the overwhelming favourite this week for captaincy, in the data we have to hand - i.e. the captain poll.

Yet i would venture he has the worst set of variables leading into his fixture of any of the big 6. Maybe except Kun as he has been sick, but there are very strong arguments that he should be behind Sterling, Auba, Haz, and Kane this week for the reasons I've outlined above.

The amount of Travel in particular is a real black swan variable, and not something any manager would ever want any player going through before any game - first class, private jets etc are so far behind a normal daily routine in match preparation.

The fact that Salah is winning the captain poll by such a margin suggests to me that Group Think is in full flow.

Of course Salah is that good that he can score against anyone - but relative to his peers, with their individual circumstances this week should he be favourite? I don't think so. We shall see tomorrow though, i could be wrong!

I understand your reservations about him. Toss up between him and Sterling for me. I trust Klopps decision making though, he wouldn’t allow Salah to do that travelling if he didn’t feel he could handle it. Maybe Klopp wanted him to mentally & physically relax for a few days, put the bad results behind him, get the winning mentality back in his mind and be reminded of how good he is. A little break like this could be a massive tonic to his form. I’m totally just speaking in possibilities not definitives of what I think will happen by any means. But trusting in Klopp is something I really do. You don’t let your top player take that time off at s crucial time of the year for no reason.

Yep absolutely, but I wonder how much choice did Klopp have? Both the African Player of the year, and the Arab player of he year awards only happen once a year... and Salah won them both so I’m not sure Klopp would even have had a choice.

I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing how it goes tomorrow, because I think brighton pose a challenge for every team they play at home, and Salah has this mad week of preparation, combined with the week from hell for Liverpool with injuries, losing lead in the league and that 1-0 at anfield earlier in the year.

He bookies have Liverpool hot favourites, but this is why we love FPL and the premier league, so many things going on!

For next week, these are sound moves right?

    Auba + Son + Lingard -> Kamara + Salah + Pogba (-4)

Maybe go Son to Pogba this week and save yourself 4?

For all those who had Hazard or Salah (for example) as captain up until today... my advice is don't switch from your original decision. Definitely a bit of naughtiness going on in trying to convince others to not captain one or the other.
I own both and sticking with my gut decision of Hazard once more.
Tough I personally believe Hazard, Salah and Kane can quite definitely haul this weekend.

More worryingly, as a non-Auba owner, I believe he hauls against a West Ham team who have had poor distractions in the run up to this game.

Conclusion.... yes ask for advice, but don't get talked out of a gut decision from someone who doesn't own said player.

      This.

Kept armband on Hazard from last week and not doing any last minute changes.

      Haz it is.

    AWB Trippier Robertson

    Hazard(C) Sane Pogba Richarlison

    Kane Rashford Chicharito*

    Hennessey Cedric Doherty Hojbjerg

Have to get rid of Chicharito before I loose even more value..

    A) Chicha -> Arnie (is he really going to China?)

    B) Chicha -> Barnes

    C) Haz + Chicha -> Salah(C) + Kamara (-4)

I believe this is a great move and I own none of the above 6 🙂

Son may go out with a bang this week and some could talk you out of it.

No Aguero? City scored I believe, roughly 4,000 goals in the last 3 games. I fully expect a Man City rampage now to try and catch Liverpool. And Ageuro will be banging them in.
