The Complete Guide to our FPL Gameweek 22 tips and advice

Following the dizzying festive period – if the sherry didn’t make your head spin, the quickfire succession of gameweeks probably did – there’s been a welcome break thanks to last weekend’s FA Cup matches. This has given users and writers on Fantasy Football Scout plenty of time to gather their thoughts and assess their options.

J0E took the opportunity to provide us with a summary of his superb ‘Meet the Manager’ series of interviews. The videos have provided invaluable insights into how these managers achieved their success in FPL. Despite the similarities, there isn’t one magic formula, success can be achieved with differing approaches.

Rotation’s Alter Ego began a discussion on premium assets, a topic which has interested me amongst others. David delved into the numbers, looking at various performance indicators and upcoming fixtures to provide his take on which of these elite performers to own.

There’s also been a members’ table put together by FPL Virgin focusing on the six players – he examines their expected goal involvement. Neale (aka Skonto Rigga) looked at some lesser used key performance indicators (KPIs), in which the premium assets inevitably featured quite highly. In my members article, I aimed to provide a bit of context to the expect goal numbers to help assess the individual merits of the £11.0m+ players.

But this is far from the only topic of interest this week. Camzy questioned how Son’s departure to Asia Cup could impact upon Kane’s fortunes in the wittily titled hot topic – Will Kane still shine with no Son?

Meanwhile Dredd put together a Son replacement members’ table to find out who could succeed him in our midfields. He’ll be a hard act to follow.

Following Manchester City’s 2-1 win over Liverpool both Camzy and Rotation’s Alter Ego initiated hot topics on the Sky Blues – will the victory inspire a new dawn? Are we risking overlooking their assets?

In terms of planning ahead, David and Neale both penned articles on the possible blank and double gameweeks: City’s nine-goal victory in the first leg of the league cup all but confirms a Gameweek 27 blank; while Liverpool’s cup defeat to Wolves confirmed that they will have a fixture in Gameweek 31.

Gameweek 31 clashes with the FA Cup quarter finals, which will no doubt feature a number of Premier League teams, resulting in a fixture blank for those taking part and their Gameweek 31 opponents.

Will Liverpool and Salah benefit from the extra rest thanks to going out of both domestic cup competitions?

Salah was the subject of our FPL Question Time this week, as our panel of FPL luminaries grappled with the big issues. Expert opinion was provided by the FPL General, Tom from Who Got the Assist?, and Holly from Fantasy Football Community.

On the topic of blank and double gameweeks, Holly advised planning ahead:

“With double and blank Gameweeks starting to come on the horizon, an early look at the clubs to target could make the decision making process even easier.”

Upcoming fixtures were the subject of an article by Neale as he took the first regular “frisk” of the Premier League fixtures of the New Year. And G-Whizz was once again on hand to provide us with the latest fixture and clean sheet odds ahead of Gameweek 22.

Taking the upcoming fixtures one stage further, David dived into the stats to unearth any ‘chinks in the armour’ of opposition defences. Which players are set to benefit over the next few gameweeks? Where FPL teams concede the most chances fromPart 1 & Part 2 draws up a list of likely contenders.

Of course no gameweek would be complete without David’s insightful Captain Sensible article – which player will you trust with the armband?

Finally, spare a thought for chris_k who, like many of us, puts umpteen hours into FPL, and yet is losing to someone who doesn’t even watch the games. To make matters worse this person is his wife!

Famously, of course, Simon March won FPL in 2014/15 watching very few live matches, so it’s not a prerequisite for success. It’s also worth pointing out that chris_k’s wife is an auditor with a Master’s degree in accounting, so she’s obviously very adept at using the stats.

Whilst a judicious use stats can deliver success, to dismiss the eye test would be foolish. I can only hope that the second half of the season brings chris_k better fortune.

The latest cup results are in, the headline news is that Mark has been eliminated from the FFS Cup and that competition will now have a new name on the trophy. The draw for the next round in that competition and in the FFS Members Cup have taken place. At this stage there are still 16 managers left in each cup, the finals will take place Gameweek 25.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score in Gameweek 21 was 39, this saw 101 managers depart leaving 881 still standing. It is still possible to enter the competition – provided you meet the qualification criteria  – entries must be in before 8.00pm on the 14th January.

Miroslav Pujic has increased his lead to an impressive 28 points at the top of our main FFS League and is third overall. He features the likes of Salah, Kane, Aubameyang, and Son in his team, which would help explain his recent points tally. This is his fourth FPL season and he is improving each year – he will certainly beat last season’s rank of 10,316 overall.

Tore Bjørheim has regained his lead at the top of the FFS Members League, taking over from fellow Norwegian Aleksander Våge Nilsen. Manchester United fan Tore signed Rashford (£7.3m) in Gameweek 19. He clearly has faith in his fellow countryman  Ole Gunnar Solskjær to bring the best out of the young striker.

Marlen Rattiner is the new leader of the FFS Live Hall of Fame. In the second instalment of The Great and The Good v The Hall of Fame, in which Greyhead and I go head-to-head, I take a look at the recent developments in Marlen’s team.

Ragabolly is the new leader in the FFS Mods & Cons. Last season he managed a career best  2,821 overall rank, currently at 4,723 he will be looking to beat that this year. Similar to Miroslav, he has a trio of premium players – Salah, Kane, and Aubameyang – supplemented by Pogba and Son in midfield. Easy to understand why he has done well recently.

Luke Aiello has maintained his 16-point lead at the top of RedLightning’s Top 10k Any Season and has moved up to 30th in the overall standings. He played a mini-wildcard (three transfers for -4) in Gameweek 20 removing Ederson, Kolasinac, and Balbuena for Button, Digne and David Luiz. Luke has Salah, Hazard, and Kane as his trio of players costing over £11.0m.

297 managers joined RedLightning’s January to May League ahead of Gameweek 21. Following an impressive 81 points Desislava Nikova is the early leader.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the FFS Manager Melee Community Tournament has been made, the matches will take place this gameweek. Good luck to the eight remaining teams!

It was announced this week that the 2019/20 season will see a return of the FFS Head to Head leagues. They will be run by long time FFS user MIR. More details will follow later in the season.

Is it worth doing this with my two FTs this week?

    Alonso --> TAA
    Brooks --> Richarlison

The alternative is to wait a week, since Alonso and Brooks both have decent fixtures this week.

I’m struggling a bit with my armband this week. If I had Aubameyang or Sterling then I think it’d be an easier decision and I’d recommend going with one of those if you have them.

My big hitters are Hazard, Salah and Kane though and with Chelsea looking a bit fatigued, Liverpool under a bit of pressure after their mini-wobble and Spurs facing a rejuvenated Man United, it may be that all of those face some difficulties this week, I would fancy them all to get some kind of return but possibly not the sort of larger haul I’m ideally looking for.

I’m actually leaning towards Richarlison, Everton struggled a bit over Christmas, but their schedule was harsh and I fancy them to get back to winning ways after a week off in what promises to be an open game against Bournemouth. The Cherries have conceded 12 goals in their last three league games and have the second worst defensive away record in the league, they concede a lot of big chances and most of them through the centre of the pitch. Richarlison could be a deadly differential.

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

I also have Hazard, Salah and Kane. I'm going for Salah due to his consistency over the last few weeks, and he played less minutes than Hazard in the cup matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in each of his last 4 Premier League London derbies, netting 6 goals and providing 2 assists.
All but 3 of his 16 goals in all competitions this season have been scored in London.
Arsenal unbeaten in the last 11 away matches at West Ham United in all comptetitions (won 8, drawn 3).
West Ham have lost more Premier League fixtures against Arsenal (29) than they have against any other side
15 out of the last 17 goals scored in PL matches between them have been in the 2nd half.

Not to mention huge injury boost as almost everyone is available and 10 days of rest for most of the players.

      Auba (c). Change my mind.

To add, Auba is (almost) equally as good away as he is at home this season:

        Goals this season 14 - 6 away & 8 home.
        Assists this season 5 - 2 away & 3 home.

Ownership also plays a big factor, if it fails and rest of the options succeed then your rank will plummet and of course vice versa but it's all about percentages.

I've actually captained Alonso. I think after their defeat to Spurs in the cup and a bore draw to So'ton I can see them wanting to bounce back. I'm praying for a clean sheet and either an assist or goal from Alonso which should see two or three bonus points also.

The Spurs Utd game could go either way so I'm not overly confident captaining Kane or Son (both in my team) but reckon this could burn me. I also have Rashford who I think may nick a goal in a Spurs victory.

I can't captain Auba. I'm a West Ham fan. So I'll be cheering on a West Ham win but if we do lose or concede naturally I want it to come from the big man himself. On the flip I don't like captaining West Ham assets because when we don't show up I'm doubly angered/disappointed.

My alternative captain choice then could be Robbo. A great threat going forward and Liverpool have been keeping cleanies in the league of late but after their double wobble (City/Wolves) do I want to risk it, I'd rather not. Overall not my favourite starting XI this week and it could also be the week I go out of the cup.

Sterling for me. I posted my reasons earlier but here they are:

City have highest expected goals, Sterling rarely blanks when he starts (and rest mid week suggests he 'should' start), needing to catch up to Liverpool and compensate for those dropped points in Decemeber makes City even more ruthless, City are back to full strength with Aguero, KDB and Fernandinho back, and lastly City are coming to this game from the back of scoring 16 goals in two games which must be brilliant for confidence.

      However, 'TAKING THE MKHITARYAN' made a good point;
      Wolves against top teams
      Arsenal 1-1
      Utd 1-1
      Pool 0-2
      Beat Spurs 3-1
      Beat Chelsea 2-1

Regardless I still think Sterling this week.

My choices this GW are Salah, Auba and Sterling. Difficult one but I think it will be Salah as Liverpool always destroy Brighton and looking to get back on track. Auba and Sterling are still good options though.

Going Kane... have had a hunch (rightly or wrongly) since watching utd play under OGS that they are now classic flat track bullies who won’t do well against a conventionally “good” team such as Spurs.

Kane is rarely afforded space these days, and when he gets it, it’s normally a complete avalanche of shots and goals. I can’t see OGS setting the team up to stop Kane, but rather he’ll try to outgun spurs, you score 2 we’ll score 4 Man Utd 1990’s style

Could be wrong, but looking forward to finding out!

I know what you’re saying... but let’s be honest, if a spurs player is fouled in the box they’ll get a pen, and if not they won’t... but will be keeping a close eye on the ref allright!

You're right about United trying to outgun Spurs, Ole has made it clear they want to attack and try to be on the front foot. As a United fan I think this is the right approach and we can get a couple of goals, but Spurs will have plenty of chances also. I think it also depends on DDG. Hes still the best keeper in the world despite this season's form and frustrate Kane.

This is the one week I've not even wavered slightly. Auba (C), Sterling (vc) locked in since last deadline. Kane's time will come in the next few weeks.

Aubameyang. Huge expected goals stats recently, Arsenal as a team have created 18 big chances in the last 5 gameweeks, west ham have conceded 15 big chances in the last 5. These stats are both the best of any of the captain candidates this week. Also, arsenal have all their players back, and west ham are reeling from the Arnie news.

I've considered doing the same (I have Salah, Robertson, Digne and Doherty), but I like Digne and Doherty as options and can't convince myself to lose either of them at this moment in time.

What do you guys think about doubling up on Man City mids with both Silvas? They both seem fairly assured starters, even Bermardo plays when KDB is fit.

    Foolish or inspired?

I think rotation mostly applies to the wingers whereas BSiva is a workhorse and chips in with assists/goals which is why Pep loves him and DSilva remains their best creative player.

        Tempting..

sounds decent...every City mid will miss the odd game every now and then, but most will play very regularly (maybe Mahrez and Gundogan the least)
