What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

Personally don't get people saying sane or sterling important this gw but at the same time saying aguero is a risk when mahrez is a better player and more of a threat than Jesus.Imho kun will play vs Huddersfield and arsenal and if Jesus plays both cup games may play Newcastle game too.Kun scored vs pool of all teams in his last start and people saying Jesus is preferred now is just laughable but the risk with kun remains as it is as from start of season on 60 to 70 mins .Jessus hattied vs shaktar and was then not preferred in any pl game for a long time shows pep prefers kun.

Bunch of flaws in your statement. Aguero has been injured, and at the start of the season Jesus was tired from the wc and off form - the tables have now turned. Jesus`s poor form at the start was the main reason Aguero wasn`t rotated more, and even then he was subbed off almost every game. His goal vs Pool was a fantastic but unlikely finish, and comparing Mahrez to Jesus in terms of quality is a useless exercise seeing as they play different positions.

Tables have turned based on one match vs wolves loll.Wc was over 5 to 6 months back.Jesus played 90 mins in the 2nd match of the season and scored too irrelevant his form due to wc

I understand Agüero is a risk to losing minutes but a rotation risk? I doubt it.
They are chasing Liverpool and every match in the league is now a must win.
The only matches Agüero has missed were 4 while injured. 16 others he started and 2 he got subbed in, after an injury.
Sure Jesus has better form now and might start next to Agüero in a 3-5-2 when Mendy is back or even Sané on LW. But benching Agüero because Jesus scores 2 vs Wolves , including one penalty that was poorly taken, isn't gonna change anything imo.
And him getting subbed off never was a problem tbh.
Ofcourse I could be horrible wrong but I guess we'll find out 🙂

Martial not close to a drop yet. As an owner it worries me that he plays third fiddle to Rash/Pogs, and the fact that he plays LW and Pogs plays more to the left side of midfield it means that he`s probably going to be in Pogbas shadow going forward as well. Been subbed off in every game under Solskjær as well.

On top of city having a blank in gw27 and either spurs or Chelsea also not playing , man utd are playing Liverpool. Auba is the stand out captain option that gw. Should that be taken in consideration when selecting who to replace Kane with ? Or is there still a possibility that these ties are getting played gw 27 ?

This is definitely something I'm looking at.

Aubameyang as GW27 captain looks a very smart way to go. Hazard (or Higuain!) might be a choice too if Chelsea have their game in 27. But as you said, there aren't too many options!

In selling Kane many are shifting funds into midfield - this isn't necessarily a problem as it's easy enough to shift them back, but I'm also considering keeping the funds up front to fund Auba, or just going Auba now.

I think the dilemma for most is how to spend the Kane money.
      1. Aguero
      2. Aubameyang
      3. Sterling
      4. Sane

Personally, I might be saving 5.4m in the bank this week and roll the transfer, to decide next week.

I did Kane > Firmino last night with a plan to do Firmino > Auba @GW27 if all goes well. As I don't have any Spurs asset, I would prefer them to qualify for the final then I can easily bench Sane that week and do the switch to Auba for free. Otherwise, I need to deal with Hazard and Alonso (if he stays in my team until then) as well and that would make things more difficult.

He was going the journey for Rashford up until Kane got injured. Now I can't see any reason to move him on before 27, so expect him to still be in my team barring injury.

Looked at that but too soon to plan I think. So getting kun as placeholder next 3 as I see city putting 10+ goals in those and I am not capping kun anyway and swap to auba gw26 after his 2 tricky fixtures of city and Chelsea are over

Auba certainly the best option. But if Chslea don’t blank then Hazard is acceptable as a captain for those who own him. I know he’s not been great recently, I’ve been burned by him the last two weeks, but I think for that particular week considering the other options that I’d be OK with him being my captain if he has a game.

Chelsea or Spurs assets will still have a good fixture....one blanks but the other doesn't!

Hopefully Spurs get through to the EFL Cup Final such that Hazard is available to captain!

Looking at Wolves program, is Jimenez a good choice this week for Kane?

Would be Jimmy + Rash up top, Lets me assess the situation of either upgrade Kamara, Camarasa or TAA next week.

Or, would you take a hit to get a City mid for Camarasa this week aswell?

is it just me or has this been a crazy year for FPL transfers. I'm seeing hits everywhere :). Are people losing patience or are we having too many performance shifts and injuries? The only real consistent player has been the most expensive one, who people would want to avoid until they can't 🙂

Conversely hits are actually working this season because the premium assets are going through form patches, largely based on fixtures, and jumping on and off them at the right times can be hugely lucrative. It's not always about 'losing patience', it's about deliberately playing aggressively as required. Timing is everything, not the hits themselves.

What premium assets has required hits? Salah and Kane have been performing for a long time, as well as Auba and Robertson. In midfield You've had the likes of Hazard and Sanè. Those who have done hits have often been punished by for example Hazard.

I've done one hit so far early in the season because of injuries and is placed around 3200 overall with all chips left and a squad that only requires to transfer Kane out this week as my FT.

Hits to get for example Salah which "everyone" has is an example where it is a lose-lose situation.

I can't even put it in a list because I've done so much hokey-cokey. I've owned Salah on four separate occasions. I've owned Aguero, Sterling, Sane, Auba, Hazard, Kane, Salah at various times.

I've taken loads of hits, but also just reacted to fixture swings, and my OR is 35. All chips to play. Probably not making a transfer this GW because I don't need to, and will be ready for a mini Wildcard next GW if I need it. Balance and adaptability.

This is the second season I've played the game by actually paying attention and understanding it. I used to be in a league with mates and didn't even know how prices changed. Last year I played in a pretty similar way to this season, it went okay, certainly not a disaster. 250 HOF is outstanding, it really is. But it doesn't mean a season like this one is a fluke by another player doing things differently.

Nah I accept it. There's really nothing you can do to wipe your old record, it is what it is. I'm Australian and I didn't watch any premier league matches, FPL was a thing to do with casually with some friends.

I'm not pretending I didn't give it a red hot go last season and I didn't make the top 10k. I genuinely never played the game seriously before that, but I fully accept anyone could just say that. I'll have to put consecutive strong seasons together to put the past in the past.

I know exactly where your coming from. This is my first year seriously playing. I signed up as a full member and I am giving it a proper go. For the last 3 years I played in an office mini league bubble and it was very much a braggIng rights each gameweek so we all took -8s almost weekly without any regard to OR. I have made a deliberate choice to be aggressive with hits at certain times and this has been a very viable strategy and certainly not a fluke. I have built up good transfer value and now the second half of the season is happening I'm now making the choice to be more cautious with transfers. It's not a fluke but you do have to nail the transfers with hits.

It's also not a hit strategy. It's a strategy that means being prepared to take hits if you identify an opportunity. Not hits every week and for no good reason. Considered transfers, playing the fixtures, leaving decisions until the last minute rather than chasing value, etc.

I agree it's a balance, as I said. The reason I say patience is overrated is because of how often people say it's always better to be patient. It's simply not always better. You need to be adaptable.

Scored a decent 77 points which took me into 3200 overall. Was planning on rolling a FT up until Kanes injury. What to do now?

    Alisson
    Digne - Robertson - Doherty
    Salah - Richarlison - Pogba - Hazard
    Kane - Jimenez - Rashford

    Bench: Button, Camarasa, Bissaka, Yoshida.

    1FT and 0.1M ITB.

Thinking Kane to Auba as the most realistic transfer here.. Surely some goals in Arsenal-Chelsea, and then they have Cardiff at home the week after.. Only thing is that it is a bit scary going without City-attack, but I guess I just can't have them all..
