What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

I hope so, I had no LIV assets the past few weeks and it hurt watching! Also, being a MUN fan, if they do concede or lose a game it's not the end of the world 😉

The triple Liverpool defence might be just too much. Don't know how they are going to line up next GW but can't imagine it will be as tight as usual.

Kam got in to a fight with Mitro apperently so don't know what the consequences will be for that. Would advice also to get Salah in.

Cheers but Salahless for season, triple LIV in a punt but not a terrible one considering their defensive form this season, Kam can rot at the back of my bench as no BB chip 🙂

Don't you think the Pool defence will be less tight this weekend? Lovren and Gomez are still out right?

Made early transfers binning Felipe and Auba for Salah and success (bench fodder) for -4. Then got the news that Kane and TAA are both out for a month at least. I’ve pulled the trigger on the wildcard rather than playing Bennett and billing this week and spending 8 points in hits over this week and next. Regretting the decision already. Have I made a mistake? Was so set on saving the WC for the doubles and blanks...

What worries me is the DGW where i’ll want to bench boost. My current WC team has a non playing striker and keeper. I no longer have the WC to get in a full squad ready for the doubles. Could be costly

Palace looked better defensively with him in the team, and I think the injury is only short term, I assume he'd be back by the DGWs. As I say for the 0.2m it's probably worth taking the chance.

That said, Button has been pretty good himself at Brighton, not unbelievable that he could retain his place.

I really don't know in all honesty.

I took a -8 last night to swap Kane, TAA and Anderson to Jimenez, Robertson, and Salah.

I now have a midfield of Salah, Hazard, Sterling, and Richarlison, and I very much like to the look of it.

If I WC'ed and downgraded Hazard to Pogba, it doesn't give me enough funds to make any significant changes to my front three (Wilson, Rashford, Jimenez) - I could turn one of them into Firmino, but I think I prefer my team how it is now.

Auba is clearly appealing but that money can be used better in midfield. Also Sane, Sterling and KdB are much better City options than Aguero. He was great the first few weeks but I shipped in GW9 and haven't missed him at all.

I honestly don’t think he will become nailed under Ole. They way united set up under him the three forwards interlink due to their pace and I don’t think Lukaku fits that system at all. He doesn’t make decent runs that the other three male and his first touch is extremely poor. I personally feel he will play cup and impact sub unless Rashford has a massive dip in form

Agree with these comments, Lukaku looks so slow in that front three. Rash has nailed the starting spot and arguably Lukaku more likely to come on for one of Lingard or Martial

No brainer if you haven't already got him, I'm concerned with the amount of people on here who don't seem to have him already, what have they been doing for the last 4/5 GW's?

    A. Richarlison > Salah

    B. Snodgrass + Alonso > Salah + Duffy/Tarkowski/Lindelof (-4)

I have exact change for Shaw actually. Why do you prefer him over Lindelof? I worry about his injuries, although he's certain to get more assists.

Oh for goodness sake. Took Rice out missing his goal and put TAA in who is now injured. Already taken a hit to get Kane out and Salah but am left with Wan in defence away to Liverpool! I hate hits and really don’t want to -8.

    A. Do I wildcard and tidy up?
    B. Or stomach Wan playing?

    Fab(bou)
    Luiz(ars) Kolasinac(che) Wan-Bissaka(liv)
    Pogba Salah Sane Martial Deulofeu
    Aubameyang Rashford

    Button Kamara TAA Peltier

If you could get one forward and one midfielder into your team who would it be? (NOT Salah United assets or Sane)

Considering no Salah, Sane or MU then I'll have to say Firmino or Obamayang

Scout Picks Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 23

Once again, one champion representing the community will take on the Scout Picks this week with a chance to win a prize at the end of the season!

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by 09:00 on Thursday.

The champion will be selected at random at 10:00 on Thursday and then asked to submit their XI by 10:00 on Friday.

This will require 11 picks, fitting into an 83.5m budget. There is no captain in the picks and the community champion must also stick to a designated FPL formation, and also must not include more than three players from a single team. Again, no chips or captaincy will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who has beaten the Scout Picks by the highest margin will receive a £100 Amazon voucher.

The weekly champion will be revealed in the midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline the Scout’s initial thinking around the choices. Our picks and the champion’s picks will be revealed, as usual, in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community champion fail to provide an appropriate squad, fitting the budget and formation constraints, an caretaker manager will be appointed to take control of the selection to represent the community for the gameweek in question.

Submit now if you’re interested for Gameweek 23.

    Good luck!

Nice but I would prob downgrade one of defenders though to cheaper unless you play 5 at back?

I have very similar but have Auba, Ings, Punch, Lindelof, AWB for Jim, Kam, Fraser, Luiz and Perreira.

      Looks good in midfield

Too much spent at the back for me unless you plan on playing 4 or 5 most weeks. Would downgrade 1, maybe 2, to upgrade kamara (or even Fraser).

      Don't see kamara playing much

Looks good, pretty much the template now.

I woukd do auba instead of Haz on WC (own and keeping Haz for now) but that's more from how unreliable he is and personal preference.

    TAA to Robbo/VVD? -4
    Or play Bednarek?

    Kane drop
    Rashford double rise

I should really be paying more attention. Still the obvious move despite loosing out on .3m through my tardiness?

What lessons have you learned from your personal last year's BB/TC/WC strategy between GW30 and 38 during the DGW period?

I have noticed people are starting to assess what's the best strategy and what appears is that it actually seems to come down to exactly what happened to be a bad strategy last year i.e Late Wildcard just before the second DGW.

In fact, Wildcarding in 35 or 36 implies that in 2 or 3 GW, with your BB and TC, you will be able to outplay what your team could have scored by Wildcarding in for say 30 which actually could happen but bring some high variance to your game. Last year, DGW , TC and BB really were disappoiting for players who had planned to play it late.

It is a bit early as nothing has been scheduled yet, but another strategy might consist in actually Wildcarding early in 30, let the big 31 blank week go baring in mind that you could only be outplayed by an average of +-25 points compared to free hitters this week which you could get easily back by Free hitting in a DGW.

I think that if there's a 3rd DGW added to the schedule which would enable you to play TC at that time, early WC could be a viable option then

Already did Kane and Alonso -> Firmino and Shaw 2FT

was set to do either Hazard or Sterling -> Salah (-4)

considering Kane would've been the hit is it worth and Haz or Raz?

    Which combo:

    A) Alli and Sane
    B) Hazard and Richarlison
