What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

I remember kind of a rule on FPL which is not to transfer in a defender for a -4 if you have a playing defender as the transferred-in one need to score 6+ points to justify it.

But I see a lot of TAA out for -4 with people having AWB or Bennett on the bench.

Price rises can force your hand. Also something like Kane and TAA to Rashford and Robertson is a -4, but they attribute the -4 to the Rashford transfer

Bennett fair enough, but AWB could easily end on 0 anyway

Playing AWB with Palace play their 3rd keeper sounds bad for cs potential.

I think a lot of players these days are obsessed with value, so want the likes of TAA out of their team asap. Also, if AWB is your option I can kind of understand a hit, as it's very, very unlikely he'll get returns. Bennett however, that's different.

Imo this situation with TAA is a bit different than when normally one defender is missing/injured. Ppl have lot of players who will miss for sure (i.e Kane, Son, TAA, Boly) + some other players whose game time is worrying. i.e. (Kamara, Camarasa, Ings, Snodgrass, Arnautovic)

So you can take a hit more easily bcs you know that everyone else needs to take a hit also (excluding Mr. Ronka). In my ML I know that all of my ML rivals have already taken 4 point hit to ship out Kane, Son and TAA

I transferred TAA out to Robbo as I feel it's likely he gets either attacking or bonus returns so in that case the hit would pay off. Plus I want him anyway and factoring in price rises it was a no brainer to me.

I would usually agree but the injuries and price changes have forced a lot of hands this week. I just took a -8 to get Robbo & Salah in (+ Jiminez so i could afford Salah!)..

I've taken a hit to bring Robertson back for him even though I have AWB & Schindler. I've tried to play more conservative than usual this season but tbh it's backfired as I've consistently missed out on hauls from the likes of Robbo, Hazard & Salah trying to be clever and saving up transfers to bring them in for free. This GW I've just decided to cut loose and take a -8 to get the team I want instead of constantly firefighting while losing rank and frittering away my lead in my MLs.

It seems most replies are justifying the hits by assuming or predicting that AWB will score less than 2 points. I am doubling Bennett with Doherty personally and follow the old rule and suffer from the opportunity cost (losing value on TAA, or not gaining value from his alternative)

Agreed it's risky, but I'm probably going to make the Kane > Aguero move. Even from the bench he can do damage and I won't be captaining him.

That's the only sensible way I can get Pogba I guess. That's my team:
Alonso - TAA- Robbo - WanBiss- Doherty

Yes too risky IMO, I don't think he'll make it this weekend. Poch could easily role out something like this even if he is back...

      Lloris
      Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen
      Trippier, Skipp, Winks, Rose
      Eriksen, Alli
      Lamela

or if he wants to play a diamond...

      Lloris
      Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose
      Winks

      Alli
      Lamela, Llorente

Put him where you want, he aint coming in. Even more so now with the arrival of Babel.

Yes I think he'll start against Fulham, especially with Moura still not 100%.

If you look at his returns this season, 4 goals, 2 assists, 4 bonus, it's not bad considering he's only played just over 600 mins.

Considering him as Son replacement. This will allow me to sign Auba in GW24.

    Patricio
    Alonso Digne Bamba
    Salah Hazard Sane Richarlson Camarasa
    Rashford Jiminez
    Hamer Bennet WB Kamara
    0 FT , 4.9 itb

Got Rashford for Kane, and the plan is to take a hit next week for

    Alonso + Kamara --> Shaw + Auba

Do it now or next week?

So, took a -4 to upgrade Hazard to Salah after the Chelsea game at the weekend.
    Still got Kane.
Take another hit to move Kane out?

    My line-up for the weekend;
    Kepa
    Alonso - Robertson - Digne - Doherty
    Pogba - Salah - Richarlison - Sane - Camarasa
    Rashford

aguero is the one if u want to risk it and have a jump in ranks next 3 .Cant ask for better fixtures and city will score 10+ next 3 but if u dont want to make a transfer there after auba is better for the midterm but not great shortterm.Dont fancy firmino at all

Agree on Firmino - don't trust him at all - blanked against Saints, Cardiff, Fulham, Newcastle etc at Anfield already this season.

It's not as simple as that though.

Kun and Auba are like-for-like in terms of price. Whereas Firmino (and others) frees up a couple of million that can be well-used to upgrade a midfielder.

I would go Firmino. Fixtures are great.

    Pat (Speroni)

Salah - De Brunye - Pogba - Moura (Hokbjerg)
    Firmino - Rashford - Aguero

Think it's too soon for KDB, would bring in Sane/Sterling for now. Don't like the Moura, Firmino or Aguero picks tbh.

Fair point on being different but surely it would be better to pick players with highest points potential and considering you're using your wildcard you won't get another go at it.

I'd agree, A and B are both likely to concede but chances of attacking returns to compensate. If you wanted to be swayed elsewhere i could be convinced to go D (double up Wolves) instead of B

Is it safe to say everyone will be taking hits this week and a -8 shouldn't feel as bad as it does?! I've only taken four hits all season but staring down the barrel of a -8 this week.
