What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

I'd look at something different to get Salah in. Could you do Richarlison, Kane > Salah, Jimenez for free or are your short? Defence can survive with no TAA this week IMO.

Personally gone A) as 2 of Auba's next 3 games are against Chelsea and Man City, Aguero/Jesus is a lottery on who will start. Liverpool's next few fixtures are pretty appealing with 3 of the next 4 at home, the extra money saved picking Firmino enabled me to upgrade Richarlison to Sane as well for my Man City coverage

Aguero and Jesus will share minutes. I think Pep will keep playing Jesus until he blanks and he's quite a streaky player.

Firmino has the fixtures and is nailed but he plays too deep half the time.

Auba is the logical option - Explosive and nailed. Fixtures are tough but with Arsenal they create chances against anyone. I don't see Chelsea as a low scoring game, and Arsenal will invariably have to attack City once they go a goal down lol.

Sooo, think my last WC choice comes down to mainly:

    A) Hazard (352) + 0.1
    B) Aguero (343)

For what I bought haz for, and the difference between Hojbjerg and Long as fodder in different formations, price difference is only 0.1..

Both options also have Sane/KdB, but no other Chelsea.

    Rui (Fab)
    Doherty. Digne. TAA (Duffy. AWB)
    Salah. Rich. Pogba. Sane. Fraser
    Jimi. Kane. (Mitro)
    1 FT. 0 ITB

    1. Kane + TAA = Rashford + Robbo (-4)
    2. Kane + TAA = Aguero + Luiz (-4)

Can use the money to upgrade Rich or Fraser to a Spurs mid next week

Quite a complicated thing to do but i have never really analysed how hits affect me. I always take them (22 this season alone)
My mini league ranking is key for me. Certainly no expert like most on this site but I am I little better than a casual. (2 top 5k finishes and 1 top 1k)
I have made some horrid mistakes and been a little unlucky. I am around 100k (poor) with a TV of 106.9. (good)
So far, taking 5 weeks as a rule of thumb on gains and losses.
43 transfers and 23 hits Cost 92 points.
    Total gain 194 points.
Points gained by taking hits. 86 points. (Can live with that due to good TV)
Injuries: 15 after transfers 11 (Unlucky IMO)
    Tactical: 28 after FT's 9
    Stupid: 16 overall
    Bad luck including injuries 9

        Weeks 1 to 23
        In + Out -
        5 weeks
        Take out overlaps
less work for most as not 23 hits ha ha

    As a long term Salah owner, the Kane injury only supports more people getting the 2nd lower priced striker and Salah;

Locking in the template 18/19 season of

If you've already taken a -4 to get Salah back in your team this week do you take another hit to swap Kane out??

Depends on who you bring in and if you dont do the transfers, who will play? Likely that you have to start fifth midfielder? Consider Rashford and Firmino as they are more likely to immediately repay the hit...

      No Transfer =

      Kepa
      Alonso - Robertson - Digne - Doherty
      Pogba - Salah - Sane - Richarlison - Camerasa
      Rashford

I did, however I didn't have Rashford nor Sané, which you do. In your position I might wait until next GW and swap him for Auba then. This GW...maybe for Aguero. I could have done that to avoid a hit but preferred to take two hits to get Rashford and Sané. Will see if that pays off I guess, hope Aguero doesn't punish me.

Already on a -4 due to silly early transfers... Best move?

    A) Kane -> Aguero (-8)

    B) Bench Kane for Bennett and bring in Auba next week

    1. Urchin
      • 10 Years

In case of B, who starts?
After Jesus' performance, Kun is a bit risky to start. Auba surely a safer alternative after Chelsea game...

Is it too early for the wildcard?

I have a few injuries and I've had to take an 8pt hit, to try and save a catastrophic week. Should I wildcard, now, as I still have 3 injuries on the bench?

Im thinking the same.. also on a -8 rn and with 3 subs not playing or injured. Depends on wether you can field 11, pricechanges etc. Plenty of variables to take into consideration. Post your team

I'd be tempted to take a hit to do Kane > Rashford and Son > Sane and ride it out until next GW. Or perhaps -8 to get VVD in on the action.

WC would be best used later during the DGWs etc.

Shaw has good fixtures but looks like he isn't getting forward. Same amount of penalty touches as AWB over the last four. I prefer PVA and Pereira as long term options. Holebas is a good shout too.

I agree. It's tough a pick. Definitely don't rush the decision.

Pereira could be worth it. Puel started him up front with Vardy in GW21 vs EVE.

I have made a -4 due to the Son issue, and Kane is down injured now. I feel painful putting 12.5m on the bench but more painful with a -8. Any suggestions?

    My current squad:
    Dubravka (hamer)
    Digne Robbo Doherty (Bennett Bednarek)
    Salah Pogba Rich FA Eriksen
    Kane* Rashford (Kamara)

    Not tempted with Auba.

As it stands, this is my team; no more FTs left (1.3m itb)

    Guaita
    Alonso - Digne - Doherty - *TAA(i)
    Salah(c) - Sane - Pogba
    *Kane(i) - Rashford - Arnie
    ----------------------------------------------
    Subs: Button; Snoddy, MGW, AWB.
    ----------------------------------------------

Trent to Robertson looks most reasonable pick.

Looking at -8 for the two obvious choices!
As for Kane, I'd love to double up on MCY, but it's tough to navigate who starts out of Jesus & Kun.... other choices are Auba, Firmino or anyone else you guys suggest...

Both Jesus and Kun might play together. He experimented with Jesus on left flank last game towards the end. Sane on the right. Could be a sign that he wants to try something new

Define cheap? I find plenty of more value in the mids section

Anderson, Rich, Martial, Deulofeu, Camarasa etc all good value for money. Moura also an option and could play OOP

Actually Eriksen would be their best player for that striker role, but they simply have absolutely no-one creative or good enough to replace him in midfield. He has played more advanced role in his national team than with Spurs.
