What next for Spurs and FPL managers after Kane ruled out until March?

On Tuesday afternoon, Fantasy Premier League managers were told that Harry Kane (£12.5m) would be out until March.

The injury news is a landmark event in this 2018/19 campaign as mass sales are expected, and a potential shift in the FPL template with it.

The Spurs man had previously registered attacking returns in 10 of his last 12 Premier League matches and was proving a useful asset to own.

With him now not returning to training until early March following damage to ligaments in his ankles, there is suddenly a lot of money to spend.

Marcus Rashford (£7.4m) feels like the obvious alternative, having averaged seven points per game over the last seven Gameweeks.

The Manchester United forward seems fully capable of sustaining that run of form, with 10 shots on target in the last four matches, the second best in the league.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ have an appealing run of fixtures which sees them host Brighton and Burnley next, before travelling to Leicester and Fulham after that.

Moving to Rashford instead of the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) or Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) could also allow greater spending in midfield.

However, aside from Rashford, or perhaps for those already in possession of him, there may still be some interested in the fact that Spurs themselves have appealing fixtures of their own – and reasonably priced options too.

They visit Fulham in Gameweek 23 which looks the perfect opportunity to show how they can perform without Kane.

After that, it’s home meetings with Watford and Newcastle, neither of which look particularly sound at the back this season.

Of course, the key question for Spurs is who replaces Kane in the centre-forward role, especially with Son Heung-min (£8.7m) going off to the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Given his country’s standing in that continent, they are one of the favourites to win the competition so the former Bayer Leverkusen star could be unavailable until nearly the start of February.

Could that mean Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) has to stick around at Wembley for longer than expected, considering he was looking likely to leave in the January transfer window?

According to the local press, there does seem to be a chance the Spaniard could start against Fulham at least.

Llorente has come in for some praise of late with a hat-trick against Tranmere in the FA Cup while he was credited with helping fashion some chances for Kane in the closing stages of Spurs’ defeat to Manchester United last time out.

While that’s not much to set the world on fire, it might be enough for Pochettino to consider him, as the only recognised centre-forward truly available to him.

As we said, that’s the view of the local press anyway, who were keen to report than Vincent Janssen is “not in my plans” in the words of Pochettino himself.

The only other alternatives to fill Kane’s boots on the pitch from a positional sense are Lucas Moura (£6.8m) and Erik Lamela (£6.1m), both of which have some experience playing in a false-nine role.

The former was actually playing in a more advanced position to Kane earlier this season, so that could easily be repeated against Fulham.

However, he is still fighting to be fit in time after picking up a knee injury against West Ham.

Also, whether Moura can play as a lone striker remains to be seen, as he had the close support of Kane when deployed as a forward back in September and October.

With options in the academy reportedly not in a position to step up at this stage, maybe the only other player that could be turned to is Dele Alli (£8.9m).

He also has some experience of leading the line and actually has a history of doing well when Kane is not in the side.

Since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Spurs have played 14 games where Kane has either been completely absent or has had a cameo, and of those, they have won 10, drawn three and lost only once.

In those matches, the top-scorer for Pochettino’s men is Alli with 10 goals although it must be said that Son played a big part in these games too, meaning the Englishman wasn’t used as the forward.

What Spurs do with the striker position at this point remains unclear but there are still potential risky avenues that could reap rewards.

Anyone of Llorente, Moura or Lamela being handed the furthest forward place in a side as threatening as Spurs would deserve serious consideration when you look at their remarkably cheap price points – it’s just whether Pochettino can keep their attacking output at a similar level with Kane as well as Son.

I think Fanderson and Richa will always be a bit of guesswork.
I wanr Fanderson for GW27 though and i don't want Richa.
Look at Everton fixtures. Eveton are crap awayand:
"easy fixtures" are the away ones.
        "hard fixtures" are at home.
I am not feeling good about toffees atm.

Fab, Robertson, Digne, Doherty, AWB, Salah, Sane, Pogba, Anderson/Richarlison, Rashford, Jimenez,

Then either Auba + Camarasa or Hazard + Kamara.

        Probably Bednarek, Probably Hamer/Button.

        Dunno if that works cost-wise.

Camarasa is squeezing his name in for the 5th bench fodder spot too. All he needs is an assist this weekend to make him jump on the template bus.

Yes, and it makes improving OR more difficult. Every man and his dog has Rashford now for example.

Are you kidding? The Kane injury forces everybody to get the remaining marquee big hitter they don't have to create the holy trilogy of Auba Hazard Salah. In my ML everyone who didn't have one of those 3, now does.

        Other reasons

        Kane out
Lack of confidence in Aguero and KDB
Chelsea defense looking a bit leaky
        Cheap Rashford

            Of course not.

On a WC, it’s 352 all the way with Rashford + Jimenez or Firmino up top.

            And crazy midfield.

Hmm, whilst I would agree that every week anyone WC'ing would literally name the same team.
This changes pretty drastically from week to week.

I doubt there is a consensus on the best goalkeeper, or rotating keepers.
RAM was essential on any WC in the first 5-6 game weeks, but doubt many would have Alonso now, and obviously not Mendy.
Same with the forwards - anyone still have Aguero? Many combination around, and many going with just a front two.

If Sane keeps playing, his attacking threat suffers. Last time after injury he had 5 games and got only one assist (imo without checking).

I would like to, but with my current team structure I'd need to swap Robertson for him, which makes it difficult.
I'll probably wait until I WC and certainly after the GW27 blank.

A bit of a benching headache this week, funnily enough after a -4 (wanted to beat the price drop on TAA)

    Digne, Doherty, Van Dijk

I have Robbo Digne Doherty and I'm benching Alonso as well, can't see Chelsea keeping clean sheet in that game, if he gets an attacking return then just be happy you still have him while so many ditched him

Thinks its strange when someone says play AWB and dont take hits for TAA...
Either VVD or Shaw can easily make 6pts and+ and make more pts even for a hit than AWB or Camarasa

    1. George James
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

some people think the total opposite and think taking a hit when AWB or Camarasa could score 2-6 points and Liverpool / United could concede quite easliy.

Shaw cannot 'easily' make more than 6pts. He needs one positive return to do it. His goal scoring and assist record is rubbish. Man Utd do not keep loads of CS.

The balance of probability is against him scoring more than 6pts this GW.

      1. HD7

Even VVD is not guaranteed. He has a higher probability than Shaw, but keeping a CS is rarely 'easy'. Would only take a Milner or Fabinho mistake and they could concede.

7 attacking returns in 17 games isn't too shabby but I thought that Eden's record against Arsenal is even better. He usually plays good though.

Next five fixtures are Bournemouth (8 in 9), Huddersfield (1 in 3), Manchester City (10 in 16), Brighton (4 in 3) and Tottenham (8 in 15).

Past performance is not an accurate guide for future performance. Hazard looks like he doesn't care, is unimpressed by the quality of his teammates and wants to get out to Real Madrid asap. Only got 6 more months to wait......

True, I just posted this because I've came across a lot of posts (not only on FFS) how he terrorizes Arsenal so I did a little research if it's true. The thing is I'm convinced he could actually run riot this time. 3 clean sheets in 22 matches, only Fulham have less. Pathetic and sad. Our defense is in total shambles but I really hope lads will turn up and win.

How to spend my massive 5.1m???

    Fabianski (Button)
    Doherty, Alonso, Digne, Jonny (Wan-Bissaka)
Pogba, Salah, Richarlison, F. Anderson (Gunnarsson)
    Rashford, Aubameyang (Kamara)

    a. Hold
    b. -4 Kamara > Firminiho
    c. -4 Gunnarsson > Erikson (0.1 shy of Sane!)
    d. -4 Jonny > Robertson (2.7 itb)

Any spurs fans think Llorente will become a starter in Kane and Son's absence? or Lamela/Moura false 9 more likely?

I'm not a Spurs fan but follow a few on Twitter, and nobody seems sure. I personally think they could line up this weekend with Alli and Eriksen behind Lamela, but it's just my opinion.

cheers, thinking that might be the case.

I've got 2FTs and looking to move out Kane and Pereyra to TBC and Salah. Just priced out of Jimenez so looking for a differential striker for 6.3 or less.

Because Sissoko is injured, I could see Llorente starting this GW. Because Poch would then drop Eriksen into midfield and play Moura, Lamela and Alli behind Llorente.

When Sissoko, Dier, Wanyama are back, then I can see Alli or Moura playing up front and Eriksen back in his usual role.

Arnautovic starting vs Bournemouth looking more likely by the day, right?

Or would Pelle bench him if he is still there?

    1. diesel001

Difficult to say. If he is definitely going then I wouldn't put him in the squad at all. If it is still up in the air I would bench him. If he is definitely staying then I would play him.

Part of the issue is if there is a chance that a move happens, then is Arnie really going to push himself? He won't want to get injured and ruin his move.

Are you sure it was today? This suggests otherwise...

United legend Bryan Robson congratulated Pogba on the good news during the club’s warm-weather training camp in Dubai. ‘When I saw Paul last week in Dubai with the United squad, I had a little chat and congratulated him on the birth of his baby,’ he said. ‘He just seemed so relaxed and easy with things.’

    4-4-2 or 3-5-2?

I know its players that matterbut I have always had most good GWs with the classic 4-4-2. Maybe because even if the the GW aint good for attack, the defence saves me.

I woukd rank my best tatics

    2) 3-4-3
    3) 3-5-2
