Newcastle count the cost of FA Cup victory after injuries and extra time

Newcastle United progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday night after edging past Blackburn Rovers in their third-round replay at Ewood Park.

The victory was the Magpies’ first in seven competitive matches but came at a price ahead of their crucial Gameweek 23 encounter with Cardiff City on Saturday.

We’ll round up the main Fantasy talking points and injury updates from the six-goal thriller in Lancashire.

Blackburn Rovers 2-4 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), Callum Roberts, Joselu (£4.8m), Ayoze Perez (£6.1m)
  • Assists: Joselu, Jacob Murphy (£4.7m), Fabian Schar (£4.6m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m)

Newcastle’s injury list lengthened after their success over Blackburn in last night’s FA Cup third-round replay, with Jamaal Lascelles (£4.7m) and Ciaran Clark (£4.5m) having to be withdrawn on fitness grounds.

Isaac Hayden (£4.3m) also picked up a knock in extra-time but the Newcastle manager at least had fairly positive news on all three of his walking wounded:

We have to assess them over the next couple of days.

Lascelles? I don’t think it is very serious. We had to make a substitution and we did what we needed to get through.

Clark went off at half-time with a knock to the knee but we will see if he is fine. I don’t think it will be serious.

(Isaac) Hayden was fine.

Benitez added that Lascelles’ issue was a hamstring strain – which he strangely played on with for ten minutes before being hooked – and said “we will see” regarding the club captain’s recovery.

The Magpies were already missing Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m), Mohamed Diame (£4.8m), Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m), Paul Dummett (£4.4m), Karl Darlow (£4.4m) and Yoshinori Muto (£5.6m) through injury or unavailability, with Kenedy (£4.8m) added to the sidelined contingent ahead of Tuesday’s tie after being ruled out with a minor nail problem.

Benitez said of the on-loan Chelsea midfielder:

He had a problem with his nail and the reality is he cannot put boots on – as soon as he puts the boots on, he is feeling pain.

He is getting better and I think in one or two days he will be OK.

While Newcastle are blessed with an abundance of centre-backs, Clark and Lascelles were two of the three stoppers who lined up at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Florian Lejeune (£4.4m), the third member of that defensive trio in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, was handed a breather at Ewood Park as Federico Fernandez (£4.4m) and Fabian Schar (£4.6m) played all 120 minutes of Newcastle’s extra-time victory.

Schar had initially been deployed in central midfield and impressed in that role alongside youngster Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), who was starting his second successive competitive match for the Magpies as Benitez’s availability issues in the engine room continue.

The Switzerland international ended up at centre-half after injuries to Clark and Lascelles and there are some Newcastle fans who would argue that the Magpies are actually a stronger side with Fernandez, Schar and/or Lejeune at centre-back, such has been the indifferent season that Lascelles has had on Tyneside.

The fact that the Magpies were pushed to extra time by Blackburn four days before their relegation six-pointer against Cardiff may not be quite as significant as it seems, either.

Fantasy managers who own assets of the Bluebirds would have been heartened to see Schar, Fernandez, Longstaff and Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) each last at least 109 minutes, though Benitez made eight changes to his starting XI for Tuesday night’s encounter and the likes of Salomon Rondon (£5.7m), Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) and Lejeune didn’t feature at all at Ewood Park.

Christian Atsu (£5.1m), Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) and Hayden, meanwhile, all had their minutes managed after coming on as substitutes.

That Newcastle were pushed beyond 90 minutes at all would have annoyed Benitez, with the Magpies having raced into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes thanks to goals from youngsters Longstaff and Callum Roberts.

The visitors were pegged back before half-time though, with Blackburn’s equaliser coming from a corner kick.

Newcastle’s vulnerability at set plays this season has been well-documented and the fact that they conceded another goal from a dead-ball situation will interest Fantasy managers who own the likes of Sol Bamba (£4.5m) and Sean Morrison (£4.7m) ahead of Cardiff’s visit to St. James’ Park this weekend.

Despite register attacking returns, Joselu (£4.8m) – who put Newcastle 3-2 up in extra time with a rebound that looked offside – and Jacob Murphy (£4.7m) didn’t particularly impress on rare starts and wouldn’t appear to be in the shake-up for a starting role for the visit of Neil Warnock’s troops.

Youngsters Roberts, Freddie Woodman (£4.0m) and Jamie Sterry (£4.0m) will also be back on the bench at best this weekend, though Javier Manquillo (£4.3m) was trialled at left-back in the absence of Dummett and may continue there this weekend if Benitez switches from a wing-back system to a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1.

Substitutes Perez and Atsu will likely return to the attacking midfield positions behind Rondon on Saturday and it was the Spanish forward who capped off Newcastle’s victory, latching onto a Ritchie pass and firing a rising shot past home goalkeeper David Raya from an acute angle.

Benitez commented on the game:

The commitment and the team effort is there and you have to be pleased and carry confidence forward when you score four goals. The main thing is to get three points against Cardiff.

You wanted to win, you needed to win and to do it with the character they showed, with the reaction, and four goals: young players scoring goals, Joselu and Ayoze scoring goals, players who needed to score – that has to be good for the confidence of the team.

Newcastle United XI (4-2-3-1): Woodman; Sterry, Clark (Lascelles 46′ [Hayden 57′]), Fernandez, Manquillo; Schar, Longstaff; Roberts (Perez 94′), Murphy, Ritchie (Atsu 109′); Joselu.

definitely worth a plan through to GW27 blanks at this point, you know the teams that could be involved i wouldn't have more than any combination that would means over 3 players possibly blank i.e. 2 man city + 1 spurs + 1 chelsea is guaranteed 3 blankers

Which WC team: A or B?

    A) Lloris / Button
    Robertson / Digne / Shaw / Doherty / AWB
    Salah / Sterling / Camarasa / Pogba / Richarlison
    Firmino / Rashford / Jimenez

    B) *PATRICIO / Button
    Robertson / Digne / Shaw / *KOLASINAC / AWB
    Salah / *SANE / *FANDERSON / Pogba / Richarlison
    Firmino / Rashford / Jimenez

B is super solid but ofcourse causes benching headaches..

      Go with A but do

      Sterling -> Sane
Firmino -> Aguero (auba next week)
If you cant afford it, do Awb -> Bednarek
      And/or Camarasa -> puncheon
But thats just my opinion ofc.

So downgrade from elsewhere and get Haz in for Richa..

  9. Manchester City - fixture proof, rotation risks, and a blank GW

It seems that City attacking assets are almost fixture proof.

With Huddersfield and Newcastle away in the next two they have strong short term fixtures; however after that they have ARS, CHE, before a likely blank GW27. Granted there's a small chance their GW27 fixture could be rescheduled for GW25, but do those fixtures put you off at all?

Many of us are selling Kane and a slightly less expensive Aguero is an option - do you trust that he'll get enough game time, with Jesus lurking, to make him worth it? Who do you think will get the starts? Does the potential rotation make you cautious?
Rashford looks a very straightforward move and Aubameyang crucially has a GW27 fixture. Are you looking at anyone else?

In midfield, Sterling and Sané are good options - are you worried about rotation?

For those who don't have City assets, are you moving for them now or are there other options you're looking to?

    1. Pep Pig
      • 7 Years

If anything it's Aguero lurking. Would be great if he played both of them like he did for a while last season. Both scored left, right and centre at one point playing together

Yeah, I wondered if he would do that. Sterling or Sane maybe a slight risk because of Aguero. But I suspect it'll be one or the other

He won't play them together until Mendy returns. Even then, he seems to have gone away from this formation recently so I wouldn't hold out much hope of this happenning.

Not too keen on Aguero... Looks like his minutes might be more heavily managed this half of the season with Jesus in such cracking form.

I think one of Sterling/Sane is sufficient to cover any hauls they may have. Anything else is too risky for rotation reasons.

I think Sterling is the best option, it'll come down to Sterling vs Aubameyang for me. And Aubameyang might win that because of his better chance to start and his captaincy potential in some key weeks

I've currently got Sane and Aubameyang but at the expense of no Hazard and also not enough funds for Sterling. A lot of it still comes down to which big hitters you want even with Kane injured I guess!

Would anybody be shocked if City beats Arsenal 3-0 and Chelsea 3-1 at home? If those two were away games, it would change though. For the moment, only concern for City fixture is GW27 blank. I don't have any City asset and that makes me nervous.

Really think City asset is needed.

      I still like Spurs though.

Deciding/wondering whether it's worth just gambling on Aguero anyway. He's the most natural Kane replacement out there. I have Pogba so no urgent need to get Rashford as well.

At this stage the lure of Kun is truly strong.

Kun is too dangerous but Auba has 3 dodgy fixtures in 16 and a great C option in GW27.
I am not scare of owning a city asset against anyone and the freshest team will be them with KDB, Dilva, Gundo, Mahrez, Mendy, choices of C Backs for the run in.
Have City assets with a backup IMO.

I had Sterling and Sané in my GW16 wildcard team. They didn’t perform as I hoped and I sold them for Pogba (who has done well for me) and Hazard (who hasn’t).

To be honest, I am tempted to bring one of them back, but as soon as I do I know Hazard will punish me. I think Joe summed it up nicely in a recent scoutcast when he advised against doing the hokey-cokey with heavy hitters as you will more than likely get burned. So I am sticking for now, esp in light of City’s probable blank in GW27.

Regarding Kun, I just don’t think he is explosive enough this season. I owned him from the start and stuck with him, but when I compared his returns against the teams City were up against, he wasn’t returning enough points. Of course, that was then but I have used the Kane money to turn Son into Salah.

There is a simple equation which can show whether or not City are worth it:

((Kun + Jesus + Sané + Sterling + Dilva + Mahrez + KDB + Bilva) * (Premier League + FA Cup + League Cup + Champions League) / 5 available positions) * Pep Fraudiola = Stay the hell away

Dipping into certain City players at certain times could prove genius though. Like you I've avoided as I don't like the uncertainty with heavy hitters

not like we are owning them all season loll.Next 3 hudders - worst team in the league ; newcastle one of the worst home defenses in the league and arsenal who are gonna get smashed plus they have have 2 easy cup matches ,they will concentrate on league so i want a piece of that .I am captaining salah next 3 maybe with a hazard captain punt mixed in it so i wouldnt cap city assets anyway.Think u need one of sane - sterling - kun if u play by the fixtures

And add to that equation the fact, that 2 or 3 of them will probably have 1pt cameo quite often. It wouldn't be that bad if there were certain >60 min. starters. Mendy is also returning to fitness and gw 27 blank coming. They can easily win 3-0 and anyone may still blank. Or their form may even drop again, unlikely to happen, but not impossible with all these matches.

Yes, I got burnt with Sane and Sterling during festive period.

Aguero. It's great that so many are reticent about getting the best striker in the league.
It always happens once or twice a season. Get in early for his 20 pointer and let the others scramble to get him back in.

Moving Snodgrass out for a heavy hitter but the blank, two difficult games and rotation make it hard to plump for Sterling or Sane over Hazard.

Think reassess and load up for the run-in.

my plan is kun for for next 3 where city score more than 10+ and i wont cap him so not worried about limited mins and in my eyes kun is clearly first choice .Put off by auba next 3 with utd match sandwiched bw the cardiff one which means emery rotation of other players and lack of service to auba .After that u have 3 plum fixtures in a row where i will do the swap

This is maybe my plan, but when I factor in the extra transfer used to get Auba in I might just go Auba right away.

I can see him scoring against Chelsea, and then I'll wish I'd just gone straight to him. Close one I think

On the flipside last year I remember on gw32 wc it was lukaku with one good one bad fixture and auba with 2 good fixtures but kaku had dgw and auba didn't .Then people who went auba for the 2 good fixtures and Kane/kaku swap for dgw won out.I am not saying that will happen always but these type of plans aiming expected points and switching out after have worked in the past.Tricky one as u tell

I'm terrified of not owning MNC players over the next two in particular but can't see losing Hazard or Auba to bring someone in. (ARS-CHE could easily be high scoring and I paid the price for selling Auba before Sp*rs when he hit em for 16.)

1st also: I have a relatively strong team on paper and with the hits flying around this week, I'm very content to not take any with the added risk of getting burned by rotation.

2nd also: the only MNC attacker in the top 30 of overall owned is Aguero at 21.6% and he's nowhere near nailed. Overall, Sane and Sterling are differentials. My OR ain't great, but my team is solid so i feel i won't suffer too much if Sane/Sterling/Aguero haul as long as I don't pull a GW21 and return 35 points again with this same front seven:

      Salah. Hazard, Pogba, Fanderson, Richarlison,
      Auba, Jimi

In general, I'm waiting for GW28 to draft MNC into my team.

Is Sterling better than Hazard or Alli ?
      Is Sane better than Pogba?
Is Kun better than Auba or even Rashford ?

Same up to 68 for this week and up 40 points over 6 GWs according to RMT. I'm hoping I'll get far enough ahead in my mini league that there is too big a gap for a later wildcard to catch up. Still got Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain to use.

      In same position as you:

Need some advice - already got Pogba and Digne in for -4 before the Kane and TAA news (stupid doing early transfers...)

    a) Kane and/or TAA out for -8 or -12
    b) Wildcard (was hoping to save before DGW's)
    c) Play the below and sort Kane and TAA over the next 2 week's

    Fab
    Digne Doherty Bennett AWB
    Salah Hazard Pogba Rich Fraser
    Rashford

    Bench: Kamara TAA Kane

You could make no transfers and still put out a very strong team for this gameweek. Depends on what your strategy is going forward. If you want a big hitter up front make the switch to auba or other striker this week and change taa next week. If your wanting to change formation and go heavy in midfield then I would take a -4 and get it done as you would have a good chance to recoop that this week with a city player etc..

    B) Eriksen + Kamara (play 3-5-2)

So last two players are both bench fodder.

So its a matter of asking who is preferred choice out of Eriksen or Firmino? tough one really.

Because he's the best option out of that lot? 😉

Don't forget he has Cardiff next week so it's not all bad. And he's far and away the stand-out captain option in GW27 when City and Tottenham/Chelsea have a blank.

Havent taken a hit in ages. How does this sound for -4?

    Kane, Mitrovic and Anderson
    To
    Aubameyang, Firmino and Nasri???

Sounds pretty bad I guess? 😀

Only Aubameyang is guaranteed to gain you points, Anderson is better than Nasri and I really don't think Mitrovic to Firmino is worth a hit.

Or you could be a half full guy and say the hit is Mitro to Firmino which you would take all day.

        Thanks though

That's what I mean, I don't think I would take a hit to do Mitrovic to Firmino.
