Ryan penalty heroics as Australia’s Asian Cup journey continues

All of the Fantasy Premier League players who travelled to the United Arab Emirates for the 2019 Asian Cup now look unlikely to feature in Gameweek 24.

Victories in the round of 16 for Iran, Japan and Australia mean the majority of assets currently away from their clubs will now be participating in this week’s quarter-finals.

We must wait on Son Heung-min (£8.6m) and his South Korea colleagues as they play their first knockout match on Tuesday afternoon, although we now know that Ki Sung-yeung (£4.7m) has already returned to Newcastle following a hamstring injury.

Iran 2-0 Oman

Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.7m) was on the scoresheet for Iran as they beat Oman to progress to the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup.

It was his second consecutive start in the United Arab Emirates, having spent the first two matches of the tournament on the bench, a 5-0 win against Yemen and a 2-0 victory over Vietnam.

After featuring in a 0-0 draw with Iraq, he started on the right-wing against Oman, scoring the opening goal in the 32nd minute.

Having sustained a hamstring injury in November, missing most of that month and December for Brighton, Jahanbakhsh has been eased back into action with Iran.

In both of his appearances for Team Melli at the Asian Cup, he has been substituted just after the hour-mark, in the 63rd minute against Iraq and the 69th in the Oman win.

Given his performance in the last 16 meeting, he stands a decent chance of convincing manager Carlos Quieroz of starting him against China in the quarter-finals.

That meeting takes place on Thursday, January 24, which means an Iran defeat could potentially see Jahanbakhsh return to England in time to feature in Gameweek 24. That said, Gameweek 25 might be a more realistic return date for Brighton if the player requires some form of rest or break from his involvement in the Asian Cup.

A win for Iran would extend their stay in the United Arab Emirates, and put them into a January 28 semi-final, one day before the start of Gameweek 24.

Iran XI (4-4-1-1): Beiranvand; Mohammadi, Hosseini, Pouraliganji, Rezaeian; Taremi, Ebrahimi, Dejagah (Ghoddos 78′), Jahanbakhsh (Cheshmi 69′); Amiri; Azmoun (Shojaei 88′).

Japan 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Southampton centre-back Maya Yoshida (£4.1m) was a key player for Japan as they also advanced to the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup.

The Samurai Blue took a defence-first approach to see off a Saudi Arabia side that had 73% possession and more shots on target.

For that reason, manager Hajime Moriyasu will almost certainly select Yoshida once again in Thursday’s quarter-final meeting with Vietnam, the lowest ranked remaining side.

The Southampton man started Japan’s first two group stage games, a 3-2 win over Turkmenistan and 1-0 a victory against Oman, which secured their passage to the knockout stages with one match to spare.

Yoshida was then rested for the 2-1 defeat of Uzbekistan before earning a recall for the last 16.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United striker Yoshinori Muto (£5.6m) will now be suspended for the quarter-finals, picking up his second yellow card of the tournament against Saudi Arabia.

He has started two of the four games in the United Arab Emirates, appearing once as a substitute, and finding the net against Uzbekistan.

An unlikely defeat for Japan at the hands of Vietnam on Thursday could see Yoshida or Muto back in their respective folds for Gameweek 24, although, like Jahanbakhsh, a Gameweek 25 return would be more realistic.

If the Samurai Blue do what is expected of them and see of Vietnam, their semi-final would be on Monday, against the winners of China vs Iran.

Japan XI (4-4-2): Gonda; Nagatomo, Yoshida, Tomiyasu, H Sakai; Haraguchi, Endo, Shibasaki, Doan (Shiotani 89′); Muto (Kitagawa 90+2′), Minamino (Ito 77′).

Australia 0-0 Uzbekistan (4-2 on pens)

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan (£4.4m) was the hero for Australia as they squeezed past Uzbekistan in a penalty shootout on Monday night.

The Socceroos had dominated the tie in normal and extra time, Ryan called upon sparingly. However, his outfield team-mates could not find a breakthrough, putting the onus on him to help them out in the shootout.

Despite having never saved a penalty at international level in 54 appearances, he produced two big stops to see Australia through to the quarter-finals. Aided by videos of Uzbekistan’s penalty history, he was able to save efforts from Islom Tukhtakhujaev and Marat Bikmaev.

“I just tried to let the instincts take over. With technology in this day and age, you try to take advantage of it and see if you can pick anything up from it. I think at the same time it would be a bit naive of the opposition to not understand that in the world we live in today, they probably know the oppositions are looking and it becomes a game of cat and mouse. So it cancels each other out at the end of the day. You just need a bit of luck as the goalkeeper with the decision you make, if you decide to go to one side or stay up the middle. You need a bit of luck that the shooter makes the same decision. Thankfully it happened twice today.” – Mat Ryan

Australia will now play hosts United Arab Emirates on Friday and even though they laboured to victory over Uzbekistan, they will remain favourites for that tie.

If they do suffer a shock defeat, a Gameweek 24 return to Brighton duties for Ryan could be an outside possibility but would be unlikely, their fixture against Fulham on Tuesday, January 29.

Meanwhile, Aaron Mooy (£5.1m) who was initially named in the Australia squad for the tournament, was unable to travel to the United Arab Emirates as a result of his long-term knee injury.

It appears the Huddersfield Town midfielder could be on course to hit his deadline of a return in late January, as he was spotted participating in a post-match training session at the John Smith’s Stadium after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Gameweek 23.

Australia XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Behich, Degenek, Sainsbury, Grant; Milligan, Irvine; Ikonomidis (Kruse 96′), Rogić (Luongo 111′), Mabil (Leckie 68′); MacLaren (Giannou 75′).

I sold him for Alli because TAA was unlikely to start, and I want to make the move back again 😀

Playing a weird game with TAA and Alli/Son last week and this week. I need one of them to be available each week. Otherwise I risk having no bench players or having to make a random undesirable short-term transfer or take a hit to redistribute.

Thank you - 21 points is a relatively large difference then when it comes to defenders, who seem to be pretty closely spaced together for the most part. Especially as the two of them are at similar price points, and Liverpool's immediate fixtures may be slightly better. Main concern is that Alonso could significantly punish sellers as he you know he will score goals at some point - that 21 points could effectively be made up in 1 or 2 good weeks for him!

The problem I’ve always had is I think he is terrible, that and I sold him prior to his brace + cleanie against Leicester the other season. But there is no denying what he can deliver and by them numbers, not been terrible to carry when a haul could be close. If I owned, he would be staying, and at his price, might be on the radar to come in.

Agree with all of that. He still plays for a top 6 squad that will get their fair share of clean sheets, but the lack of attacking returns for arguably thought of as the most attacking defenseman is concerning.

It is Chelsea's style of play with no to much attacking threat that lead to reduce IMO. Alonso is still dangerous when joining attack.

The matches Ive seen Alonso has been pretty far up the pitch regularly. Has anyone seen one of those heat maps or what its called where you see where they actually play?

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

Just looked. Against Arsenal, he has some touches in the box, but not a load.

You can see he was cutting in more and getting touches just outside the box (as opposed to crossing position at the wing).

However, you really get to see it more when watching, as he was costantly drifting onto the penalty spot and waiting for service/involvement which never came. At the ctirical moments towards the end of the attacking phase, it was often him who took the resposibility to actually put himself in goal-scoring opportunities. This wouldn't show up on the heatmaps unless Chelsea actaully found a way into the box, but even Hazard has fewer touches in the centre of the box where it counts (ie exlcusing the edges)

    Mark Clattenburg's Salah Diving Verdict.

Mo Salah went down with no contact from Mamadou Sakho. It's irrelevant that he did not appeal for a penalty, because he was trying to deceive referee Jonathan Moss, who should have issued a yellow card.

Salah was accused of going down easily to win penalties against Arsenal and Newcastle. In all these
situations, he has no chance to score, so it seems he prefers to try to win a penalty. As he is Liverpool's penalty taker, he will know winning a spot-kick means he has a free shot at goal. He is
then likely to increase his chances of winning the Golden Boot. One thing I have noticed is that when
Salah goes down to try to win penalties, his hands go above his head. This is what officials look for when trying to see if a player has simulated. Usually, if you are knocked over, you put your hands straight out to break your fall.
Until the introduction of VAR, if a player simulates, a suspension should follow - irrespective of the
    referee's decision.

Liverpool's star man has recently converted 3 penalties and was the one fouled. Regardless, you can't be certain Milner would have taken the penalty.

I'm just saying your assuming Milner would have taken the penalty and you can't be absolutely certain that he would. There's a reasonable possibility Salah takes it.

Ok. Just saying I don’t think fact he might take pen has a bearing. Imo it was a dive and he should have been booked. Others were valid pens.

                • 8 Years

Tbh Clattenberg may have a reasonable conclusion, but all of that rationale was generalisations and bias (which may be helpful to make quick decisions in a match, but with the benefit of time and replays etc, it's uneccessary to simplify all that into these assumptions).

Clattenburg isn't a psychologist, and nor should anyone be trying to guess what's happening in Salah's head anyway. In fact, he's writing a narrative much like a journalist would, which gives me less faith in referees tbh 😆

                (1) Was it a foul? (2) Did Salah go down like it was a foul? Only if the answers are (1) NO (2) YES can we infer it was simulation. No point starting with a psychoanalysis of Salah's motivations and then looking for the evidence to support your claim.

(I do think there are situations in which claiming the foul is useful information to determine intent, though. In a 50/50 call where there is no contact, yet the player still goes down, a player claiming a foul can tell you he's gone down in that manner on purpose. Not claiming a foul means it's more likely he was trying to avoid contact. Depends on specific cases, though, because you can foul someone without making contact.)

How about players who receive a yellow card (or second yellow) for simulation? Should they be suspended on top of the yellow?

I personally think a one-game ban for all simulation cases, regardless of context, would be enough. But what to do with simuations in-game is a mistery, as the consequeses can be huge, but without VAR, the consistency is dire.

Why don't you just wait and see what will happen when they both play and who will take the pen when or if they are awarded one then you can be sat your right instead of being a smart arse now.

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years

I'm happy to wait. You said it was 100% going to be Salah, not me 😉 Nothing wrong with asking to know why you believe what you believe.

"Why not make it 5?" is a reasonable question imo. What's special about 2? Currently, simulation is punishable by either a yellow card, a second yellow card (sent off + one-match ban, I believe), OR a two-match ban (retrospectively). My question is, if we apply a consistent punishment for simulation, where should the threshold be?

In my opinion, with VAR, maybe even a yellow card is enough of a deterrent, since players would be very unlikely to get away with it. A red card and a one-match ban would also make a diveunworthy of the risk for the player, unless you were in the dying inutes of a match, desperate to score a goal (in which case, maybe even a 5 match ban isn't enough to stop people diving).

So what about without VAR? I think 2 matches, for a start, is too severe when compared to a single yellow card, which is also a punishment for simulation. But if we managed to apply punishment somehow consistently without VAR, one-match is already somewhere between the current extremes. I'm just wondering why you think two matches is necessary, when we could try one match first?

My girlfriends are pretty happy with me so I wouldn't worry too much mate. 😉

It's all.about opinions on here. My opinion is salah will take the pens when both him and Milner are on the pitch next time a pen is given . Whether I say 100% doesn't matter it's still only my opinion. The comment you made after was " if I said so it must be true" smart arse reply if you ask me..I'll leave it at that, after all we come on here to get other people's opinions and the knowledge they may have. Sorry, to answer your Question on diving and the punishment that should be given. I think a two match ban is sufficient if after viewing the video evidence it clearly shows the player has took a dive. I don't think one is enough and 3 or 4 match ban is to much. Remember we only want to stop the diving not have great players out off the game for to long. OK if a two match doesn't seem to be working although imo I think it will they can review it after the season then maybe put a 3 match ban on it thr following season. I'm sure the players and the managers will get the message then..

At the moment, I think it's only a two match ban if it leads to a goal, so a blanket 2 match ban in all cases, would be even stronger than the most extreme punishment now (though would be more consistent, aka fair). The minumum supsension of one week, applied consistently in all cases, seems enough to me, especially since we could see multiple bans each week. As you say we don't want to completely disrupt the teams. Anyway, have a good GW yourself 🙂

Not sure what the current rules are but imo simulation anywhere on the pitch should result in a ban, irrespective of whether a goal comes of it or not.

Right, but I don't think Salah should be banned unless it's already in the rules that he should be banned for that. But I agree that the rules need a change so that it can be punished in the future.

Is Son the greatest ever Asian player? There was a Korean who played well in Germany in early 80s too. And also Nakata and Daei

so if utd beat Arsenal then they are another no blanks team like Liverpool...

Aubamayang would be very enticing in that scenario....

(Obviously either team going very deep in europe could change this but that seems highly unlikely)

Liverpool and Arsenal could both go very deep

Both reached the semis last year. Why do you think a repeat isn’t likely
