No early return for Son yet as South Korea progress in the Asian Cup

Following our first round-up on Tuesday, our reports from the Asian Cup continue with a look at how South Korea fared in their round-of-16 tie against Bahrain.

South Korea 2-1 Bahrain (AET)

On the day Dele Alli was ruled out until March with a hamstring injury, Son Heung-min and South Korea extended their stay in the Asian Cup to dash hopes – for now, at least – of an early return for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

The Taegeuk Warriors were surprisingly taken to extra time by Bahrain in Rashid yesterday, with Son lasting all 120 minutes of the encounter.

This was Son’s second appearance of the tournament following his departure from north London after the defeat to Manchester United in Gameweek 22.

The in-form Spurs midfielder had played 89 minutes of his country’s 2-0 victory over China last Wednesday, with Son winning the penalty for South Korea’s first goal and then supplying the assist for Kim Min-jae’s headed second.

There was no attacking return against Bahrain but Son was involved in the build-up to South Korea’s first goal, with his pass out to the flank leading to a cross that was turned in by Hwang Hee-chan.

Son was mostly utilised on the left flank in this match, having been deployed in a more central position in his first appearance of the tournament against China.

Bahrain had clearly pinpointed Son as the danger-man in the South Korea side, too, doubling up on the Spurs player whenever he was in possession and not averse to fouling the FPL midfielder to curb his influence.

Son said of his team’s efforts:

It was a tough game. It’s all about attitude, as well, and I’m a bit unhappy with our performance. I think we’re better than that.

South Korea’s progression to the quarter-finals means Son will definitely miss the second leg of Spurs’ Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Thursday, though there is still the chance the midfielder will return in time for Gameweek 24 if his nation are dumped out of the tournament by Qatar this Friday.

An exit at the semi-final stage next Tuesday could see Son back on UK shores in time for the Gameweek 25 visit of Newcastle United, given that the third-place play-off in this competition has now been abolished.

Should South Korea go all the way to the final, Son will return for the Gameweek 26 encounter with Leicester City at Wembley.

Spurs, meanwhile, issued the following statement about Alli:

Following scans and clinical assessment, we can confirm that Dele Alli has suffered a hamstring strain.

Dele will now undergo a period of rehabilitation with our medical staff with the expectation of returning to training in early March.

The Lilywhites should, at least, have Lucas Moura (£6.8m) back in time for Gameweek 24 after Mauricio Pochettino said the Brazilian midfielder was “nearly 100 per cent” following the win over Fulham.

South Korea’s other Premier League representative in the Asian Cup was Ki Sung-yueng (£4.7m) but the Newcastle United midfielder’s tournament is over after he picked up a hamstring injury.

The Magpies yesterday confirmed the player had returned to the club in the following statement:

Ki Sung-yueng has returned to Newcastle United after a recurrence of a hamstring injury suffered on international duty with Korea Republic.

He first picked up an injury during his country’s opening game of the Asian Cup, against the Philippines on 7th January, and was substituted.

After suffering a recurrence in training, the 29-year-old has been recalled by the Magpies.

He is now back on Tyneside, where his injury will be assessed by the club’s medical staff.

    Have 1 FT 1.8m ITB
Current lineup for GW 24 (subject to benching decisions).

    Patricio
    VVD Robbo Digne Doherty
    Salah (C) Richarlison Pogba
    Aubameyang (vc) Jimenez Rashford
    (Fabianksi / Lingard AWB Gudmundsson*)

I'm right to save my FT this GW 24 and have 2 FT available for the quick turnaround GW 25?

Ya especially with Patricio in goal already. Suppose it's either triple MU attack v Bur or double Wolves GK/DF v WH.

I could also do Gudm to Lucas Moura if fit and bench both 🙂

Last chance saloon for Rich and/or Felipe this week?

With all the Kane money sloshing around people’s banks, Son returning, Sané form, KDB back, and Haz’s lovely fixture run, I think it’s goodbye to whichever one blanks this week unfortunately.

same here own both. rich still has good fixtures, no returns in last 4, same for anderson
want sane in, blank gw 27 though, could easily bench for that
rich be obvious one out, less players having a blank
if there is a dgw 25 then sane would be a move worthwhile, then keeping rich could be if he has dgw 25, anderson could be the one,to go,
need news on potential dgw 25 to help me which one to move,as can always move rich on for blank, an bench sane.
      decisions !
feel jota may just be bandwagon, need to see more from him

The only way to measure the effectiveness is to see what your bench gets.

I'd say anything over 15 is okay, 20 good, 25 brilliant, and 30 excellent.

Obviously, you need to be honest with yourself and put your (in your opinion) weakest players on the bench.

My highest bench so far this season was 23. I almost considered a BB that week too, could have made a single transfer to get Hamer to Lossl and got 26. I won't beat that in the DGWs I doubt.

Man city, Everton, Chelsea/Spurs and their respective opponents in gw27 should get conclusive results in fa cup round this weekend.
City-everton game would probably happen as city might not have a free midweek if they qualify for next round of CL.

In short: Chelsea win EFL cup semifinal (0-1 down v Spurs after 1st leg though), and then Chelsea and their GW27 opponents Brighton BOTH avoid a FA Cup R4 replay (cos that replay would take up the slot they’d use for a DGW25 game).

    Current team:
    Allison (Patricio);
    Alonso, Robertson, Digne, (Doherty, Wan-Bissaka);
    Salah, Pogba, Richarlison, Fraser, (Torreira);
    Aubamayang, Rashford, Jiminez.

Aimimg to trade down Patricio and Torreira to put money into Midfield.
Have 1ft and 1.3M in bank.
Should I look shoet term (Fraser) or long term trasing down before getting in better midfield.
Any suggestions on strategy, and ideas who to get.
(I'm thinking to hold for now).

Hey guys, 1 FT and 5.2 ITB. The only way I can get Auba is to sell Jiminez or Rash.

Is it worth parting with Jiminez or should I keep and upgrade Rich or McArthur? Auba has a great run of games coming up and could be essential?

    Patricio - Guaita
    Robertson - Shaw - Doherty - Digne - AWB
    Salah - Sane - Pogba - Richarlison - McArthur
    Rashford - Jiminez - Barnes

I could do Barnes & Richarlison > Auba and JWP for a -4 hit who is on form for Saints and only 5.0. JWP has decent games too.

Wassup. Any help with the below?

    Fabianski (Button)
    VVD, Robertson, Doherty (Bennett, AWB)
Salah (C), Hazard, Pogba, Rich (Hoj)
    Auba Rashford Barnes

0.0 ITB, 2FT's. Thinking either Barnes to Ings or potentially Rich to someone, guess it's a wait and see with DGW's and what not.

So really every single RMT above is pointless until the weekend.

Methinks the members RMT tool is having a bad hump day

      Nope! That looks right.

RMT has a set of numbers attached that is 'prediction if player starts', basically.

In this case, RMT is saying that if Hamer starts he'll score more than Fab, so you should start Hamer. With, of course, Fab being subbed in for Hamer if Hamer doesn't get minutes

This doesn't happen too often with outfielders but happens occasionally with GKs when you have one who probably won't start but has a better fixture than the other

I strongly disagree. Just compare AWB and Gunnarsson benching order for example.

That'll also be influenced by assist potential, bonus potential, save potential as well of course

      2. Don Kloppeone
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 3 months ago

        Interesting!

But surely the tool is also predicting that Hamer won’t start which is why the predicted score is effectively 0?

Right exactly. It's predicting that the most likely score is low, and is the one shown, but it's predicting that if he were to start his potential is better than for Fab

            Hmm I get the logic.
            Just don’t agree with it!

Fabianski the master saver vs WOL or Hamer who hasn’t played since GW3 and therefore is unlikely to be able to save a thing vs EVE

Think about how many poor Richarlison shots Hamer could save 😉

That's fair enough. In the end it's your call! There's also a chance Hamer would come on and get 1 point, so probably better to go with Fab I agree

For specifics I'll have to ask Chris (who designed it); I was told before but don't remember off the top of my head.

I get how the normal numbers work but for how it works when an underlying number overrides the shown % for GKs I'll need to get back to you

So another day without news from the FA with regards a DGW in 25. Getting very close to there being insufficient time to let the police and away supporters prepare for a game. Imo chances can't be much better than 25% there being a DGW in 25, and this figure dropping by the day.

    GKP: Lloris (Button)
DEF: Doherty, David Luiz, Robertson (Wan-Bissaka) (Bennett)
