Attacking double-ups focus of latest Watchlist Update

Effective attacking double-ups are the theme of our most recent Watchlist update.

With Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) largely dominating the captaincy debate and his ownership increasing each week, Fantasy Premier League managers need other tactics to keep getting green arrows.

As discussed on this week’s Scoutcast, attacking double-ups could be the way to go, and that was confirmed in part when we recently updated our Watchlist.

What we found was that the colleagues of some of the game’s most effective assets are also looking ready for investment.

Starting with Salah’s team-mates, we pushed Sadio Mané (£9.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) up in their respective positions. In the last four Gameweeks, both players have had more efforts on goal than the Egyptian. With Liverpool’s fixtures remaining favourable and involvement in all the upcoming Blank Gameweeks, either one from the pair could make excellent partners in our Fantasy teams for Salah.

In spite of their upcoming Blank in Gameweek 27, both Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) and Leroy Sané (£9.7m) have strong credentials. Between Gameweeks 24 and 26, the fixtures still suggest attacking involvements for Manchester City, with Newcastle (away), Arsenal (home) and Chelsea (home) their next three matches. Obviously, the defending champions will have a corresponding Double Gameweek at some point, for which owning both Sterling and Sané could prove a devastating combination. That said, we have pulled the German down a little for now, with the impact of Benjamin Mendy‘s (£6.1m) return currently difficult to assess.

On the other side of Manchester is another strong looking double-up with both Paul Pogba (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) at the top ends of their respective positions. The former is the second-best midfield option after registering 10 attacking returns in his last six Premier League outings. However, with his ownership now just under 40%, owning him may not be enough to cover yourself against large Manchester United wins. The recent injury to Harry Kane (£12.5m) has accelerated Rashford’s rise to prominence, breaking the record for most-transferred in ahead of any Gameweek last time around. He has seven attacking returns since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over, making him just as viable as Pogba. The two of them have very high ownership among the top 10,000 FPL managers as well so they both look must-haves for a run of games featuring Burnley (home), Leicester (away), Fulham (away), Crystal Palace (away) and Southampton (home).

The recent injury to Dele Alli (£8.9m), which will keep him out until March sees Christian Eriksen (£9.4m) slot in as the obvious replacement for him on the Watchlist. Even though Spurs are now without a selection of key options, it does increase the likelihood that Eriksen will be involved in their attacking returns. With Son Heung-min (£8.6m) and South Korea now out of the Asian Cup, he may reappear soon, once we know more about a specific return date.

The other big change in midfield is that Wolves man Diogo Jota (£5.9m) has come into the frame, replacing Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m). His hat-trick against Leicester has drawn the attention of the Fantasy community to him and his fixtures make him very appealing. Wolves face West Ham (home), Everton (away), Newcastle (home), Bournemouth (away), Huddersfield (away) and Cardiff (home) in the next six Gameweeks.

Further up the pitch, Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m) makes a tentative debut appearance among the forwards, replacing the elusive Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m). While the Argentinian comes to England on the back of a bad first half of 2018/19, he does present a potentially appealing cheaper alternative to Eden Hazard (£11.0m), who has slipped down to third in the midfield bracket after struggling in the false-nine position.

In defence, Matt Doherty (£5.2m) holds onto second place, despite his poor form of late. The main reason for his high positioning is the potential the next six Gameweeks offer for Wolves. As we’ve already mentioned, their fixtures look incredible, and with little else to excite us in defence, the man who has shown what he can do earlier this season is tipped to rediscover his spark.

Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m) is the biggest riser in this position, with no defender managing more touches in the penalty box since Gameweek 20 than the Arsenal man. The Gunners are not especially renowned for clean sheets, but shutouts look achievable against Cardiff and Huddersfield in Gameweeks 24 and 26, while Kolasinac’s price makes him conveniently benchable when Arsenal travel to face Manchester City in Gameweek 25.

Everybody’s favourite budget man Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) returns to the Watchlist this week as Crystal Palace’s schedule turns very blue on the season ticker. Only two teams rank higher than the Eagles for defensive potential on it over the next six Gameweeks. Wan-Bissaka takes the place of Sol Bamba (£4.6m).

His Palace colleague Vicente Guaita (£4.2m) goes in the opposite direction though after picking up an injury last time out. Furthermore, Roy Hodgson bolstered his options in the goalkeeping department by confirming the signing of Lucas Perri on Thursday. Conveniently replacing Guaita as the budget option in our goalkeeper section is Brighton’s David Button (£4.0m), still filling in for Mat Ryan (£4.4m) during his Asian Cup exploits.

Meanwhile, Marcos Alonso (£6.6m) continues his freefall down the defensive charts, with his place on the Watchlist very much at jeopardy.

Not for this week, but in a couple of moves over next two weeks I plan to have this team....how’s she looking? Any changes?

    Etheridge - Guaita
    Digne - Shaw - TAA - Mendy - Bednerak
    Salah - Sané - Pogba - Son - Jota
    Aguero - Rashford - Jiminez

      Ethel I like in goal
      Midfield is lovely stuff.

      Defenders
no AWB? Prefer him over Shaw by miles. Man U not good for CS still.

      forwards
I don't like Aguero - Auba and Firm better options. Not sure why many on here are so in love with him, with rotation risks and 60 minute appearances.

      coverage
With Liverpool the only big team guaranteed for 31/33 I think you need 3 of their players - so Bobby or if you don't like him another defender.

Cheers smee! Great analysis - thanks!! I’m answer to your thoughts.

Currently have WB so may keep and swap Shaw then. Have Guaita too though hence my plan to move WB on.

For city blanks plan would be: Kun & sane > Auba & Mane. So got a plan for that! And right now think Kun is a good differential

Can’t quite afford Robbo hence TAA but Mane will give the triple up anyway!

        Cheers pal 🙂

So if Chelsea have a double week against Huddersfield and Brighton in week , would you triple captain Hazard? For me it's a definite yes, would just need to figure the best way to get him in.

For non-owners, how are you planning to get him in?

I can’t see the point in loading up on city in a double GW situation especially if Chelsea have one with better fixtures

Hazard is generally the fall guy to get expensive city players so that’s a no go

    Salah is set and forget

Rash and pogs form too good to shift especially when city could suffer rotation

Im not sure if I want a DGW25 or not tbh.

I think I do, but then getting Hazard and/or Higuain will be too hard to resist and right now Id rather get Son and/or Jota. All four of them would mean two or three hits over 24-25.

I want Man City v Everton as own 4 players from them but not Chelsea v Brighton as have none. If Chelsea have a double, Hazard is a must have which creates a problem on who to sell as a Sterling, Sane, Salah owner and someone who wants Son.

So I assume quite a few are in a similar situation to me about who to get rid for Son.

    A) Anderson
    B) Richarlison

Richarlison has the highest chance of returns in the short-term (next 3 weeks) but West Ham have Fulham in GW27 where-as Everton have a blank. Also after City in 28 West Ham's fixtures are great.

Ideally I'd have Jota and Son for both of them but I already have 3 Wolves players (thanks Patricio)

Sterling vs Hazard? Sterling @ 11% ownership is a great differential if you're chasing

    1. AuFeld
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

IMO- Sterling is a rotation risk with the amount of fixtures + CL + chasing LIV. Sterling looks to have shifted to a more creative role then an attacking threat from earlier this season. His min's per goal attempt has nearly doubled from when he was firing on all cylinders between GW 11-14. Also his conversion rate as dropped as well. He's season average is 25% and right now he's at ~16% iirc over the last four. He's creating more, however whoever is on the receiving end of the chances he creates is not converting them.

Hazard looks nailed, on PK's, and looks to be rejuvenated.

Alonso, Richarlison & Mitrovic shouldn’t be anywhere near the watchlist, they’ve done nothing for weeks & weeks. And I know.

If there’s no one else to fill the slots, it just shows how few players are actually worth considering.

They've been due for too long. Not enough game weeks left for the required patience to hold onto all three waiting for them to come good. Plenty of better options imo.

He's frustrating but he's a potentially explosive player, the second highest scorer in the game, highly owned and could have a double of Huddersfield and Brighton both at home. Not having for that double could be a nightmare.

      1. Richd
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

Frustrating and potentially explosive seem like a risky TC. I’d barely say he’s essential for any DGW.

I’d rather TC Alonso or Ederson personally.

I wouldn't like to throw a triple captain on a defensive player. If they concede it's totally deflating but I do see the temptation. Chelsea aren't keeping many clean sheets and it's been a while since Alonso has returned attacking points. City's double could be Arsenal and Everton, both teams capable of scoring v City in my opinion.

You can argue that his recent form has been lack luster, but I procured him way back in GW4 for $10.7m. He's one of those options that you never know when he's going to explode, so it's best that you just leave him in your team and don't think about it.

He's a bonus points magnet when ever he gets a return, on PK's, and thrives with a proper striker (Giroud or Hig) on the pitch. He's having one of his best seasons in terms of mins per point. Great long term option imo.

Yeah Sterling has started 18 of the last 21, reason behind that ^ is two of them always start, if Sterling and Sane start the first one, then it maybe Mahrex & one of Sterling/Sane starting the next one, so one of em will play both

Hard to say, Sterling would be my guess but it's a bit of a lottery. Not sold on KDB, still on his way back from injury and Pep seems unlikely right now to start him twice a week.

My only concern is WAT and LEI are pretty solid up the middle if that's where Son is going to be playing. In terms of chances conceded over the last four, WAT has conceded seven chances and LEI has conceded eight chances.

      Either Doherty or Richarilson.

Doherty started on the bench last week which is a concern and they haven't been able to keep a cs since GW17. Richarilson is the Mitro of the midfielders.
