Pochettino discusses Son’s availability after latest cup exit

Our Scout Notes series focuses on the two FA Cup matches contested on Sunday evening, as Spurs became the 13th Premier League club to bow out of the competition before the fourth round is even completed.

Chelsea, meanwhile, cruised into the last 16 as Gonzalo Higuaín made his Blues debut.

You can read our initial thoughts on Sunday’s Double Gameweek announcement here and our write-ups of the other relevant FA Cup ties via this page.

Crystal Palace 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Assists: Jeffrey Schlupp

Mauricio Pochettino said Son Heung-min (£8.6m) looked “tired” after his return to the club from the Asian Cup – but didn’t rule out playing the South Korea international against Watford on Wednesday night.

Son wasn’t involved at Selhurst Park on Sunday as Spurs slumped to a second domestic cup exit in the space of 72 hours, with the mid-price FPL midfielder having been in action for his country only on Friday.

Pochettino said of his player:

Today, we were with him on the training ground in the morning. He’s so tired, he played three games. Very tough games.

Of course, not too much energy today but I think, we hope, for Wednesday he’ll be ready and available to help the team.

An early return from the United Arab Emirates, an imminent triple-header at Wembley and a guaranteed fixture in Blank Gameweek 27 has enhanced Son’s appeal over the last two days.

Just over 40,000 more FPL managers have drafted the Korean into their squads ahead of Gameweek 24, though Son is still within the “differential” bracket given that he sits in only 4.8% of Fantasy squads at the time of writing.

Christian Eriksen (£9.4m) wasn’t part of the matchday squad at Selhurst Park, either, with Pochettino explaining:

He’s rested because he’s so tired. He played a lot in the last few months. Of course, today is a massive risk to play with him. It’s 90 minutes. It’s the FA Cup.

It’s a game you must win. But of course I rest some players and today I rest him and Toby [Alderweireld].

With Son and Eriksen having earned a breather and Dele Alli (£8.9m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) sidelined through injury, Spurs struggled to carve their hosts open and wasted what few clear chances came their way: Georges Kevin Nkoudou (£4.8m) twice being denied by Julian Speroni (£3.9m) in the same move and Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) blazing a penalty wide with the Lilywhites two goals down.

Speroni also tipped a Fernando Llorente (£5.6m) shot round the post but the fact that Spurs couldn’t breach a second-string Palace defence – Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m) aside – underscored just how much they missed their first-choice attacking quartet.

Son and Eriksen’s involvement against Watford may change all that, of course, though with the Korean evidently fatigued there is still legitimate concern about just how appealing Spurs’ Fantasy assets are for their midweek fixture.

Pochettino said he had no regrets about his team selection in south London:

Regrets? No, no. We played with our best team that we can play at the moment. I think it was a moment, of course, for different players to play, to help the team. I think we came from a very crazy fixture [list] and were forced to take some decisions, rest some players and rotate. But like in the past we are going to play Wednesday, too, and Saturday. Always this is a disadvantage against our opponent. Watford played yesterday.

The Spurs boss had set up with a 3-4-2-1 at kick-off but switched to a 4-2-3-1 at half-time, with Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) sacrificed at the break.

Lucas Moura (£6.8m) made his first start since recovering from injury and had a so-so game but at least offers Pochettino another attack-minded option ahead of the visit of the Hornets.

Spurs’ defence hardly covered themselves in glory either, with Davinson Sanchez (£5.8m) guilty of all-too-easily letting Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m) past him in the build-up to Connor Wickham’s (£4.9m) tap-in before Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.2m) committed a senseless handball to gift Andros Townsend (£5.8m) a penalty.

Roy Hodgson made six changes to his side for this encounter, with Wickham leading the line in between Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) and Townsend.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) was among the Palace players to be handed a rest, with Joel Ward (£4.3m) impressing in his stead at right-back.

Hodgson said of his Wickham’s goalscoring display:

The fact is that he’s worked hard to get where he is, it’s good that he’s had the chance today. Had it been a league game he wouldn’t have had that chance as Jordan [Ayew] would have played in the centre-forward position.

But I decided to rest Jordan so he could play and he took the opportunity which is very creditable and I’m very pleased about.

I don’t want to say anything that could even be interpreted as remotely negative, but it is two-and-a-quarter years and the fact is coming back and playing for 70 or 75 minutes and getting a goal, it can’t get much better than that for you, but if you suddenly believe ‘well that’s it now and now it’s going to be just like it was four or five years ago when I was in my prime’, I think that would be too much to ask.

He has to keep training, keep himself fit enough to get out to all the training sessions which is something he’s been doing now for the last five or six weeks. In my previous year-and-a-quarter at the club he never had that spell of training every day, there was always a spell followed by a breakdown, followed by a new spell, followed by a breakdown.

I think the reason he’s playing now and can play from the start is because he’s training and the reason also is because Christian Benteke who has been doing it for the last two or three weeks can come on and give us the 15 minutes that he can give.

Bakary Sako has re-signed for the Eagles until the end of the season, meanwhile, with Hodgson adding:

We hope he is going to give us what he gave us before he had that very bad ankle injury. We are hoping that he can come back and give us what he gave us then which was a boost in training every day with his joyful attitude and enthusiasm, and the fact he’s so well-liked in the group.

He wanted to come, we wanted to take him and it’s another very useful addition to our squad because wide areas and forward areas we are still limited to some extent because Connor and Christian we’ve still got to see how that progresses on a weekly basis.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Speroni; Ward, Kelly, Dann, Van Aanholt; Meyer (Milivojevic 78′), Kouyate, Schlupp; Townsend (Ayew 87′), Zaha, Wickham (Benteke 69′).

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-2-1): Gazzaniga; Foyth, Sanchez, Vertonghen (Lamela 45′); Trippier, Skipp, Dier (Wanyama 62′), Walker-Peters; Moura (Sterling 80′) N’Koudou; Llorente.

Chelsea 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday

  • Goals: Willian x2, Callum Hudson-Odoi
  • Assists: Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Olivier Giroud

Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.5m) made his Chelsea debut on Sunday as the Blues coasted to an FA Cup fourth-round victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The on-loan striker showed glimpses of promise but it was generally a quiet evening for the Argentinean, with wingers Willian (£7.2m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m) stealing the show with their performances and goals.

Higuaín indeed registered fewer touches than any Chelsea player who started the tie at Stamford Bridge – even goalkeeper Willy Caballero (£4.7m) – and had limited opportunities, though showed excellent movement when latching onto a Mateo Kovacic (£5.7m) pass on 19 minutes before seeing his shot deflected away.

The burning question from a Fantasy perspective remains unanswered for now, though: that is, whether Higuaín can have a beneficial effect on Eden Hazard (£11.0m).

The Belgian was given the evening off after his excellent display against Spurs in the Carabao Cup last Thursday, so Wednesday’s trip to Bournemouth may be the first match in which the two are paired together.

Higuaín has already been bought by over 50,000 FPL managers since being added to the game though other Fantasy bosses may be willing to give the former Real Madrid forward a little while longer to impress given that the Blues have a blank in Gameweek 27 and meet Manchester City and Spurs either side of it.

Standing in for Maurizio Sarri in the obligatory post-match press conference, Gianfranco Zola said of Higuain:

Considering it was his first game, you will see more from him. A couple of times in the first half he made some great moves into space and he nearly got the right ball.

I’m personally satisfied with him, but he’s going to get better because he needs to build up an understanding with the others. Sometimes in the first half he was making movement but we couldn’t see his movement and it’s something we need to improve.

Hudson-Odoi reportedly handed in a transfer request ahead of Sunday’s tie but impressed in the second half especially, scoring Chelsea’s second goal after bringing down Andreas Christensen‘s (£5.0m) excellent pass with two beautiful touches.

Zola said of the budget FPL midfielder’s future:

I don’t know if he will stay. We want him to stay, he has a contract, we are playing him, we believe in what he can do for this team.

There are not many 18-year olds in Europe who are playing as much as he is in a big team. That shows we believe him, we think he can be an important player for us, so we will see what happens.

We can do as much as we can do. He has a lot of strong players around him but we are still finding space to play him.

If we played him it’s because yesterday in training his attitude was excellent. He really played well. He scored a fantastic goal in training yesterday too. He didn’t show any signs which is why he played today.

Chelsea’s only shot on target of the first half was Willian’s converted 26th-minute penalty and the Brazilian was arguably the pick of the players at Stamford Bridge, scoring an excellent second goal with a curling effort from an Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) lay-off.

Kovacic impressed on the right of central midfield, playing in N’Golo Kante‘s (£5.0m) usual position – the Frenchman also being handed a breather on Sunday evening.

Marcos Alonso (£6.6m) returned at left-back after being benched in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Spurs but, like Higuaín, the Spanish defender had a somewhat quiet evening, not being called upon too much defensively and offering little in attack.

The Blues were rarely troubled by Wednesday but had a scare with the game still goalless – VAR coming to the hosts’ rescue as a penalty decision against Ethan Ampadu (£4.4m) was overturned.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday means that the Seagulls will require a replay on Tuesday week and puts an end to any suggestion that Chelsea may join Manchester City and Everton in having a Double Gameweek 25.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Christensen, Alonso; Kovacic, Ampadu (Loftus-Cheek 65′), Barkley (Jorginho 84′); Hudson-Odoi, Higuain, Willian.

for a SGW, couldn't be a better one with this team, very nice.

Still like the strategy of WC34 and BB35, just because of the odds

I guess there’s a chance that Doherty and one of Sane/Sterling are rested, then it might be a bit pointless... does look good though

Why did Nuno bench Vinagre in the Cup then mate?

I hope you are right, too. But it does seem odd to rest Vinagre if he isn’t going to play midweek.

I would. Great time to do it. I was going to do it this week also but I think Trippier will be dropped/rested so I’m not.

I think bench boosting in a DGW is vastly over rated and intact hampers plans for the doubles.

See what the 5th round draw throws up.

If it looks like more PL are going to get knocked out (either playing each other, or difficult away ties for middling PL clubs), then I'd go for it.

Allows you to use your WC when you fancy it rather than feeling forced to use it in GW34 or whatever everyone is planning.

I'd keep my BB chip for a DGW, too much risk of rotation in a single GW as mentioned. I've done it last season and worked out brilliant I almost got 190pts which I doubt you'll get in a single...!

      Looks okay in theory.
Only thing is you are basically betting that Saints Palace is a 0-0 as that's your 2 of your defenders playing each other.

Or that whoever he would’ve otherwise benched out of Saints/Palace gets a clean sheet.

Bench boost is about significantly bettering the points you would’ve otherwise scored, so as long as you’re honest with yourself about who you would or wouldn’t have benched then you can objectively say whether it was a success/failure.

    A. GW25 Auba, Camarasa to 4.5, Sterling (2ft)
GW26 get Auba and Camarasa back for -4

    B. GW25 Auba to Kun (roll one ft)
GW26 get Auba back and use 1 other ft for something

(Have Digne, Richarlison and Sane for now)

      A - by a mile.

I think Digne is a hold or sell at this point. No point buying him for GW25 as playing city will likely be a blank anyway so it’s only really a single gameweek for an out of form Everton. Then he blanks for real a few weeks later. Not worth getting in now if you don’t own IMO.

Agreed. I will prob sell Digne before BGW27. After that, most home games are vs top teams - Everton will concede - and the rest are away games vs teams fighting for survival - Everton could concede.

Will go for Bednarek and invest in midfield, I think

    Thoughts on these moves?

    GW24: Save FT
    GW25: Salah & FAnderson -> Sterling & Sane/KDB
    GW26: Sterling & Hazard -> Salah & Son (-4)
    GW27: Siggy -> FAnderson

Would give me 4 DGWers in GW25 and just 2 blankers (Sane & Digne) in GW27 for a -4

    Fabs, Steele
    Digne, TAA, Kola, Doherty, Holebas
    Salah, Haz, Siggy, FAnderson, Camarasa
    Auba, Rashford, Ings

    Bank 0.7m, 1FT

Oh OK, you're thinking of switching out Salah instead of Haz for GW25.
For me it really hangs on whether Chelsea and Haz look like they might be returning to any dangerous form over next few weeks.
I think it's a decent plan. Obviously all relies on things going according to plan!

Yeah - it means I can get 2 City attackers, which I couldn’t if shifting Haz & FAnderson. Also Haz has HUD in 25.

Another option could be to lose Haz & Auba for Sterling & Kun - I see you’re going that route below too!

Yeah I'm thinking of that route. Depends on how Chelsea get on this week I guess. It would be classic Hazard to score big at home to Huddersfield when I finally get rid.

Salah out for Sterling for one GW for a hit is essentially the move. Don’t like it at all, especially considering Sterling could easily play just 90 mins like Salah.

    Team for GW24:

With just two days rest after the Arsenal game, the fixture against Everton is a concern for Sterling, Sane and Aguero, right?

Yeah, Pep is a rotation fiend at the best of time. Nobody is safe, especially with Bendy incoming.

That big gap between gw26 and the Schalke game looks like enough rest to let Pep give Sané and Sterling lots of minutes in 24 and 25

          Considering it for sure

Still got all chips left which would probably mean using it on Salah in a sgw if not in 25

Salah at home to Bou could be a good time

Think Sané will get enough minutes to score highly, so it’s a tricky one!

Nice one. Add to that the fact that the likes of Sterling and Sane will have had a 10 day rest between hud and new.

Which DGW25 players are you looking to have and why?

There is likely going to be significant rotation with City. Who do you like most and who are most likely to play both games?

Those with Everton assets will likely be holding them - for those who don't have any Everton are they worth bringing in?

And what about BGW27 - how much is this playing into your thoughts? Do you have plans for transfers after the DGW? Are you looking at players like Son and Aubameyang as replacements for your City assets?

Already had Digne and Richarlison - so keeping them.

I brought in Ederson for my 4.0 keeper (keeping Fabianski for week 27) and Sane for Fanderson this week.

Weeks 26 and 27 I'll be dumping my Everton assets. I'll keep hold of Sane and Ederson for a while I think.

plan to bring in ederson and digne in too for no hits

Given they've had a huge amount of rest recently, I think Sterling and Sane are the best options for City. Very tempted to triple captain Sterling. Ederson is also tempting for security of starts.

Everton look crap, so Digne may be enough. Going without the highly owned Richarlison may backfire, but I don't think he'll be worth a hit, particularly as it will cripple me BGW27.

Atm thinking Sterling, Sane, Digne. But may add another.

Nicely put. I agree Sterling is the best option, I'm looking at Hazard > Sterling. Sane is probably a step too far. I haven't really considered Ederson as I'm happy with Pat and Fab but I'll look into it.

I have Digne and Richarlison so won't sell, but wouldn't be buying. Aguero I expect will start one and get some time off the bench, but not going to do Auba > Aguero I don't think

Sane, do not care much whether he is playing both games or not.

Those with Everton players will get reward this GW. That will be a trap to managers without them and after they are bought for the doubles they will blank 😀

On Digne and Rich atm. No CIty cover, which really bothers me..

Was set on doing Kane to Auba, but am now considering Kane to Aguero, and then Agu to Auba after the DGW. However, I don't really trust Aguero to get two games..
Would very much like Sterling and/or Sane, but that would mean ditching one of Haz/Salah for a hit. Is it worth it?

I currently have Digne and Rich and will bring in Sané for Martial GW24 and then Ederson for Fab GW25. I just hope Boruc will keep the starting GK position at Bournemouth so I can bring him in GW27 for Button as cheap backup.

Ederson and Richarlison currently in squad, will save FT this week to give 2 FT and also have 5.4 ITB so could get another city attacker if I want - going to sit back, watch everything that happens in GW24 & make a decision on Friday/early Saturday.

It could be a good time to use TC... but using it on a city player could be a disaster zone with Pep in charge

Got Sane and Rich atm. Might just stick with them 2, don't think it's worth bringing in any Everton players. Could do Hazard to Sterling but Hazard has Huddersfield in GW25, and with Sterling far from guaranteed to play in both games is it worth the risk when he doesn't play in GW27? Not sure it is. Might do Alonso to a City defender if he doesn't play midweek. Probably just stick with Sane and Rich though

This news causes me a real prob. I have 5.8m and two FTs plus Mitrovic to sell, which gets me Aguero, but will he be worth it? Had planned to bring Auba in for Cardiff..

Can't get any City mids, as I have Salah and Pogba at base prices, Hazard playing Hudd, and Richarlison. So it's Aguero or bust or get Jesus and Ederson..? I might get Auba for this week and roll the second FT, and get a City striker next. My other prob is I have double BHA 4.0 keepers and if Ryan is back I need to deal with that as well as no keeper for BGW27!

It's only one extra fixture which is not that great, for City it's in the middle of Arsenal & Chelsea games so you'd think he'll use his squad in this, Everton are in such bad form that most single players will probably beat their double score.

Can't get Sane or Sterling as my MF looks really strong in GW25 so it looks like Laporte & Aguero, don't see two CS or two starts for Aguero, might have to swerve it & focus on 26 & 27 to make up on any lost ground, don't think it'll be a lot of damage though, could even be more damage for those who load up as they'll have a job trying to clean it all up.

          Salah C V West Ham
          Son V Newcastle
          Pogba & Martial V Leicester

Really don't want to lose any of those that week as think there will be goals in those games, Martial at a push but would have to take money from somewhere else to upgrade so figure Martial + 4 might be ok.

Oh wow early jump to Son, could be nice! Who did u sell to get him?

Martial is tricky... he seems the least productive of their attackers, but equally on the eye test has a brace in him most games.

Yeah, with my rank (97k) I want to get on early rather than late as he'll be in everyone's team before you know it & the impact will be lost, took David Silva out, he was always a placeholder & he's definitely not playing twice in the double.

Yeah, I am happy to lose Martial now as got him before I got Rashford so think he can go but not sure about moving him for a hit when they have Leicester, he just scored against Arsenal so that could kick start a return or two, the next three fixtures are nice enough.

Have thought about sliding over to Siggy for free but just not feeling anything for Everton, even with an extra game.

Yeah honestly I’d probably stick with Tony-M for another week or two, at his price and being OOP in that Utd attack etc he really should be FPL Gold

You might be safe enough without city attack.

I have none at present, but will have 2FT’s & Felipe is in my midfield so might do him > a City mid on Saturday mornings not, not sure yet...

Hi Geoff. I currently have Sterling and Digne and happy to roll with those 2. Though my only dilemma is deciding whether to be brave enough to make Sterling captain ahead of Salah. I'd like to think Sterling would play both games but nobody knows. Maybe owning Sterling will just be enough. Like yourself I will consider bringing Ederson but can never back against Arsenal not scoring

Any Everton players I have for DGW25 will be shipped for 27 - after 26 Everton have an uncanny run of great away fixtures alternating with terrible home fixtures (and blanks). So currently have Richarlison and Digne, for 3 weeks at most. They'll likely become Leicester options as thry embark on a great fixture run after 26 with no blanks.

As for Man City...I'm wondering who will a) play both and b) have a viable exit plan (or benching alternative) for 27. So far...nobody!

Only own Ederson from MCI/EVE at present.

I'd probably have to ditch Hazard (HUD) to get in Sterling and I'm not sure it's worth it. Haz could easily outscore him with that single fixture. I could probably do Deulofeu to Sane if I downgrade Alonso too.

If Alonso is benched for Bournemouth, he'll be straight out - probably for Digne as he's highly owned and I want to minimise exposure.

In short - looking at Ederson, Digne and Sane but no more. Still might captain Salah (whu) or Hazard (HUD).

IMO this DGW will be a trap for City payers. Can't see CS for City in these 2 matches and for the attack, I can only see SGW there. Sterling and Mahrez will get 1 game each. Sané might be rotated with Dilva, since KdB is back. Jesus and Kun will also be rotated.

I don't own any City player for this same reason, but still considering Kun, given he has NEW this GW and will surely get 1 match plus some minutes, as Jesus doesnt last 90min.

Already own Richa and Digne for EVE, so will hold but still not very optimistic for them. SGW will easily outscore them imo.

Already have Digne and Richarlison so no point selling either.

Will use my FTs in the next two to swap Alli & Steele > Sane & Ederson.

Not sure a hit is worth it and with those fixtures, not even worth loading up for Everton and City is just a massive gamble with rotation.

Means for GW27 I can at least field a full 11.

Need to look at gameweeks 25-27 as a whole, and view it as everyone has the same amount of games.

Is it really worth a -4 then another -4 to get in any of these players and then get them out again? I've only got Sane, may add Richarlison and a defender for no hit.

Any other Auba owners considering giving hi the TC this week against Cardiff ?

    Other TC options are
    A) the City DGW, but I feel Pep will take a huge dump on whoever I pick
    B) Chelsea's eventual DGW, probs in 32 ...... though I had other chip plans for that week
    C) Something else which I have yet to think of ....... but there are not many better single-GW options than Auba home to Cardiff IMHO

Hazard has hudds. And you’re thinking of selling for a rotation risk Man City player who probably will only play the arsenal game. Then rested for the Chelsea game
