The Scout Squad for FPL Gameweek 24

The Scout Squad panel return to offer their long-list of players to be considered for our regular Scout Picks feature, which will be published on Tuesday ahead of the upcoming set of Premier League fixtures in midweek.

The 72 nominations listed will be whittled down to a squad of 14 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.5m) ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline at 18:45 GMT on Tuesday.

Joe, Peter, Paul and Az – who have five top 1,000 finishes between them – expand on their notable selections and omissions in the article below.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United can each boast two assets with unanimous backing this week, while there is plenty of support for Wolves players too.

Similar to the previous Gameweek, the value on offer in defence and up front can help free up cash for our Scout Picks midfield.

Along with the list of the usual names and players finding form ahead of Gameweek 24, I’ve added three differentials.

Sead Kolasinac could prove a productive option for Arsenal’s home clash with Cardiff.

The left-back has delivered six or more points in four successive matches at the Emirates.

Indeed, since his first start of the season in Gameweek 11, only Lucas Digne (28 to 21) has created more chances among FPL defenders.

Kolasinac has four favourable matches in the next five, which includes a visit from Southampton in the reduced Gameweek 27.

Ryan Babel impressed on his debut down the Fulham left flank in Gameweek 23.

Despite being limited to 54 minutes, the Dutchman fired three efforts on goal, more than any team-mate.

He now welcomes a Brighton defence that have conceded in each of their last seven road trips.

In all likelihood, this is the only time we’ll be able to put forward Fernando Llorente’s name for an article this season.

Although the return of Son Heung-min places question marks over his pitch-time, the South Korean’s recent comments on his own energy levels suggest that Llorente can retain his start at home to Watford.

Only Paul Pogba (eight to six) has fired more shots in the box over the last two Gameweeks than the Spaniard, who was on the scoresheet against Chelsea in the EFL Cup last Thursday.

On last week’s Scoutcast, I strongly advocated doubling up on attacking assets from teams with strong fixtures as a way of climbing the rankings.

Gameweek 24 looks a perfect time to put this strategy to the test with Liverpool, Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers offering a wealth of goal threat as they take on favourable opposition.

Costing less than £17.0m between them, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford are already a popular attacking double-up. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over in Gameweek 18, they have amassed an incredible ten goals and seven assists between them in the league. They take on a Burnley side that is the third-worst for conceding shots in the box over their last six away matches.

Pairing Mohamed Salah with Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane looks set to be another fruitful move. The Brazilian striker gets my vote after scoring five goals over his last four league run-outs. Visitors Leicester look particularly obliging after letting in four against Wolves last time out and having the second-worst record for conceding close-range efforts over their last six away days.

Meanwhile, Wolves’ Diogo Jota (£5.9m) and Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) look an ideal combination as we look to squeeze as much quality as we can into our budget. The Portuguese midfielder has double-digit points hauls in two of his last four league appearances, while his Mexican team-mate has found the net six times and assisted a further seven goals this campaign. They host a West Ham outfit with only one clean sheet in their last six league matches.

Another tragedy underpins an FPL Gameweek and I’d like to express my sympathy after the events that have once again shocked us all – my condolences to the families of Emiliano Sala and David Ibbotson.

On to happier things, and midweek games are a favourite of mine and many others in the FPL community. The Double Gameweek looks set to have people considering their transfers even more so than usual but before that, we have a single Gameweek to attend to and some fantastic fixtures to try and reap the benefits from.

Arsenal looks a tough test for Cardiff this week and the overshadowing events add an extra layer of uncertainty as to how Cardiff will perform. I think a comfortable home win will be likely for Arsenal and Sead Kolasinac, a favourite of mine, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has flattered to deceive recently, should reward owners with good hauls.

I also like the look of Wolves vs West Ham, where West Ham are in a funny situation with Marko Arnautovic’s U-turn and two bad results against Bournemouth and AFC Wimbledon. Wolves have all the momentum going into this one, and I reckon Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota, who have both scored vital last-minute goals recently, are going to be in the points again.

I also see great potential in the Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United games, with all four teams playing sides with suspect defences. Add in Everton versus a beleaguered Huddersfield side and I can’t see this being anything but a high-scoring week. Should be a good one!

In amongst the excitement of Double Gameweek speculation and, in one case, confirmation, we mustn’t overlook the importance of setting up our sides to accumulate bread-and-butter points in single weeks such as this. Of course, free transfers become particularly precious as canny managers start building for the future but my selections are solely built on form, the Gameweek 24 fixtures and, as always, a degree of gut instinct.

The budget takes a battering this week with no fewer than 11 selections drawn from the current top six sides (though none from a Spurs team which has a series of alluring fixtures but which I was struggling to trust even before Sunday’s FA Cup defeat to Palace).

When Ole Gunnar Solskjær took the helm at Old Trafford before Gameweek 18, Marcus Rashford immediately joined my selections, albeit that I advocated a wait-and-see approach generally. Since then, he’s had more attempts on goal (27) than any other striker and has five goals to his name, a goal tally matched by team-mate Paul Pogba, who is equally as near-essential on current form as Burnley come to town.

The Red Devils’ latest victims, Arsenal, entertain a Cardiff side which recently shipped three goals at St James’ Park. I’ll be at the Emirates on Tuesday and fully expect to see the attacking combination of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette – with six goals and three assists between them in the last six matches – inflict further woe upon the Bluebirds. Sead Kolasinac’s attacking threat has been well-documented and I’m hopeful that he can add to his four assists for the season in a game where he may well spend more time in the opposition half than in his own.

In truth, very few (if any) of my selections this week are particularly left-field, though Lucas Digne can be thankful that Huddersfield’s form (a single point from the last six games) is marginally worse than his own side’s (two wins and four defeats during the same period).

There is at least a nice circular narrative in Diogo Jota’s inclusion. Like many, I included him in both my first Scout Squad of the season and my own team and watched in dismay as the Portuguese racked up blank after blank. I don’t expect his hat-trick heroics against Leicester to be a regular thing but as the excellent recent Scout article on the midfielder concluded: “Jota certainly has the underlying stats to back up his recent form.”

The Community Champion

This week’s contender is Joax2, who is currently ranked 19,831st in the world and who hasn’t finished outside the top 15k in his two seasons as an FPL manager.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last weekend, Athletico Timbo was beaten by our Scout Picks 70-54 with a 4-3-3 line-up of Alisson (1); Lindelof (2), Robertson (5), Bednarek (2); Pogba (8), Sterling (10), Salah (15), Pedro (2); Aguero (5), Deeney (2), Ings (2).

fclackless’s Gameweek 10 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-44 remains the deficit to beat.

    Bench one:
    A) Jimenez
    B) Doherty
    C) Digne
    D) Alonso

Currently Doherty is on the bench but have been punished by him before. My rule of always favouring the mids/forwards hasn't really been rewarded. My thinking is that if Emerson plays in place of Alonso, then hopefully he won't play any minutes at all, allowing Doherty to slot in. Thoughts?

I think your impulse is right on Emerson. I'd say it was between Doherty and alonso and Doherty more likely to get a cameo if he doesn't start so this makes sense to me.

Know this is a very specific question but has anyone read or listened to anything about the small percentage of managers in the top ten k without salah? Think it's an interesting topic and not seen anything about it.

    Thanks.

I had decided to go without Salah before that leagues inception. At the beginning of the season, I just thought that his price was way too high which imo makes the game less enjoyable with less wiggle room on budget and the perma-captaincy dilemma! Then again I play the game for fun as a fooball fanatic that's not in any major cash league situations.

There are only 631 of them left, and I'll venture there will be even less next week. Up until GW16 you could get into the top 10K without Salah but since them he's become essential to staying there... I'm in the top 10K now largely thanks to riding Mo's points from GW16 onwards, especially the first few weeks where his 10K ownership was still pretty low.

Who knows. But I think there are probably a mixture of "Salah Dodgers", who've resolved never to own him this season [I think there are one or two leagues that predicate this] and pragmatists who just don't want to tie up that much cash in him. Both groups have been steadily dropping out of the top 10K the last several weeks. Will some survive to the end? Sure, probably, but I expect with a second wildcard coming, and no blanks for Liverpool all season, a few of the pragmatists are going to get him in sooner or later.

      2. Deulofail

To state the bleedin' obvious, the top 10k is filled with Salah owners because a) almost everyone owns Salah, and b) Salah has done very well in recent weeks. Lots of people in the top 10k, who were already doing well, have bought Salah during and towards the end of his current run of FPL form.

All it would take is a few meagre points tallies from him and the makeup of the top 10k could begin to change. The number of people who don't own Salah would start to snowball as a function of a) people selling Salah and b) people without Salah scoring more points than people with Salah.

I don't think the number of non-Salah owners in the top 10k tells us anything at all about whether owning Salah going forward is a good or bad strategy. It only tells us what the makeup of the top 10k currently is. Your venture that numbers of non-Salah owners will decrease next week is just a prediction that Salah will score well and/or more people will buy him, but he would only be essential if he does well (while non-Salah owners do less well), and that has nothing to with the makeup of the top 10k.

Yup, more Salah blanks than wins before DGW Season properly kicks off and his ownership will likely change dramatically.

I remember the vast majorty of owners refusing to sell Salah towards the end of last season due to the money invested in him and his form or consistency, despite there being much better options for the last 2-4 gws with an extra fixture and, in my opinion, better fixtures and potential for points in general.

I would expect something similar this year, but who knows what will actually happen. In one season, Salah might be essential during the blanks and doubles, whereas in the next he might choke your team to death.

I'm currently leaning towards owning him only in GW31 using the FH chip, while attempting to get more fixtures out of other top team players. I might change the strat, but I think it's a reasonable tactic as I'm looking to get points rather than collect the most wanted playing cards 😀

            1. Rostah
              • 9 Years

I'm a Salah owner myself and happy to own him. If I feel he won't deliver me more points than another option I'll happily ship him on though. Being afraid of 'ownership' is a weird concept to me.

I gave Sterling the C last week as I felt he had a better chance of points vs Hud than Salah vs Palace. I'm probably going to give Sterling the C again this week vs Newcastle instead of Salah vs Leicester.

Sure I could have gained more points by playing it safe, but I want to finish with as many points as possible. The only way to do that is by owning playing and captaining the players you think will score the most points. I'll never let a decision like that be made by ownership. If Salah looks the best option for the C for me, I'll give him the C, if not, I won't. Drop in form, ship him off.

Looking at the template in the Top 10k only tells you what players have done well over the previous 6 or so weeks, not who will do well over the upcoming weeks.

Best of luck without Salah, sounds like a solid plan with the FH chip. I'm hoping to not join you and sell him, but I'll have no problem doing so if it looks like the best option for my team!

Yeah, but fair pay, this game has such a luck element. Salah is absolutely a great FPL asset and LIV are the joint best team in the league, but he's not essential...no player is (apart from AWB of course haha)!

With a team of:(confirmed subs in brackets)

    De Gea (Button)
    Kolasinac, Doherty, Digne, AWB Holebas
Sané, Salah, B. Silva, Pogba, (Hudson-Odoi)
    Aguero, Rashford, Jimenez

What would you with defence choice in terms of bench?

Currently Have Doherty, Kolasinac and Digne, but AWB has Southampton, and Holebas faces a misfiring Spurs, with no Kane, no Alli, and potentially a knackered Son.

Quick plan (all going well of course without injuries), does it seem ok?
Will have a weak enough looking GW27 team of course but hopefully the other GWs make up for it!
    Thoughts welcomed:
    GW24 - Save
    GW25 - Shaw to Danilo
    GW26 - Danilo to Doherty
    GW27 - Digne to Pereira (+1FT)

    Alisson
    Robertson / Trippier / Pereira / Doherty / AWB
    Eriksen / Pogba / Hazard*
    Rashford / Rondon

Yeah. But just feel Doherty @ this price is too much.
But you can swap him after gw 27 too.
          So....

I'm considering LIV defensive triple up as a differential after GW27 with Watford, Everton, Burnley, Fulham next four.

A'noon all. 1FT, 5.4 ITB. If I do Anderson & TAA to Sane & Danilo (-4) it gives me:

    Fab (Hamer)
    Luiz - Doherty - Danilo
    Haz - Pog - Sane - Salah
    Wilson - Rashers - Jimenez

    Subs - WB - Bennet - Billing

    Sound good?

    Ta!

A or B the better move for the double GW? Currently have Digne & Richarlison, but no City coverage

    A) Fabianski (LIV) > Ederson (ARS, eve)
    B) Richarlison (WOL, MCI) > Sane (ARS, eve)

    Auba, Rashford, Jimenez

    Steele, AWB, Bednarek, Gunnarsson

    1FT; 0 ITB

Hey guys, 1 FT and 5.2 ITB. Rich has a double coming up and so should I hold or get rid in order to enable Auba? Which option looks best:

    A - Richarlison & Barnes > JWP & Auba for -4 hit
B - McArthur > Son (Barnes > Arnie the week after)
    C - Other?

    Patricio - Guaita
    Robertson - Shaw - Digne - Doherty - AWB
    Salah - Sane - Pogba - Richarlison - McArthur
    Jiminez - Rashford - Barnes

Is the Richarlison double overrated? One of the games is against City.

I need to ditch him in order to enable Auba v Cardiff. I think Auba will outscore him over the next two gameweeks. Thoughts?

Think you can grab Auba for the Huddersfield game GW25 instead?

Auba has a tough fixture against City mind you; still think he'll do better than Richarlison alas, but ditching Rich for Aubs will take 2 transfers.

My rival has Auba and I'm just concerned he could haul at home to Cardiff. I'm reluctant to lose Jimmy and it's maybe too soon to get Son.

Although I could just ride out the Cardiff game and wait until 26 as you suggest. If I get a cheap midfielder for a -4 hit then they be on the bench which seems a waste. So I may just save the transfer and bench AWB, McArthur & Barnes

Personally wasn't too inspired watching that arsenal-united game, so I feel comfortable not owning auba yet.

The Auba strategy feels like playing catch-up rather than a confident move. Would only do it only to be competitive in a head-to-head match-up..

Tis only my opinion of course, best of luck.

It also removes the Salah v Auba captaincy headache. I'm comfortable giving the armband to Salah and having Pogba as vice.

Some things will be made quite easy for me this week I think based on results.

    1. Alonso benched? He's out, probably for TAA
    2. Auba fail with another prime fixture (like vs WHU)? Ditch him for Rashford (though it means no premium forwards)

I am more optimistic about Auba at home to CAR vs the WHU match on the road. You may also want to stick with Auba for GW 27 as ARS looks to have the stand out fixture and (c) Auba may be a great option.

      1. He seems an expensive luxury now.
      2. My forward line is Rashford + Rondon (+4.3 fodder) and tempted to see it out for the foreseeable, although if Auba starts exploding he would be hard to ignore for GW27!

    Currently have 1FT 1.8m ITB

Team for GW 24 & save FT

    Patricio (Fabianski)
    VVD Robbo Digne (Doherty AWB)
Salah (c) Pogba Richarlison Lingard (Gudmundsson)
    Aubameyang Jimenez Rashford

Plan for DGW 25 with 2FT

Patricio VVD Lingard --> Edersen Bedernak Sane (c) -4

    Thoughts?
