Man City assets falter in Double Gameweek audition

Manchester City players largely faltered in their audition for Double Gameweek 25 as they were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle.

It was a game in which the defending champions struggled to fashion many clear cut opportunities and after labouring they were stunned by their spirited hosts.

How their key options fared at St James Park, ahead of a crucial double set of Fantasy Premier League matches next time around, is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Newcastle 2-1 Manchester City

Goals: Salomón Rondón (£5.7m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) | Sergio Aguero (£11.3m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.3m), Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) | David Silva (£8.5m)

Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) was perhaps the only Manchester City option to come off well ahead of Double Gameweek 25, as he scored in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. Not only did he find the net in the opening exchanges, but he was also the only player in the match to register more than one shot on target. The Argentinian had three efforts in the penalty area, matched only by David Silva (£8.5m), and collected maximum bonus points.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) was incredibly underwhelming, not registering a single shot in the entire match. Typically very active in the opposition penalty area, he managed just three touches of the ball in that area of the pitch. The fact that he played 90 minutes at St James’ Park and is always under threat of rotation, options such as Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) or Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) waiting in the wings, could reduce his appeal ahead of the Double Gameweek. Aguero’s 90-minute display may also count against him too when managers are recruiting in the next few days, as Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m) played just 17 minutes.

“It was not our best night. We lost second balls, we were not aggressive enough, that’s why we could not win.” – Pep Guardiola

It was a mixed evening for owners of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) who were would have been happy to see the German in the starting XI once again. He has now featured from the beginning in 11 of Manchester City’s last 12 Premier League matches. However, Sané’s blank was the first time he failed to be involved in a goal since Gameweek 20 when he featured only as a late substitute. The silver lining on the Gameweek 24 two-pointer was the fact that Sané was withdrawn in the 72nd minute which would suggest he is being prepped to start at least the first match of Double Gameweek 25.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) was, again, not named in the matchday squad as he continues to struggle with his comeback from injury. Pep Guardiola insisted he was much better ahead of Gameweek 24, but preferred instead to leave him out. That means we will likely have to wait until his pre-match press conference on Friday before assessing his chances of being involved in Double Gameweek 25 and factored into the team selection picture.

The aforementioned Silva was a rare bright spark in Manchester City’s midfield, appearing the only one to have the aggressiveness about his game that Guardiola explained his team was missing in the encounter. He inadvertently provided the assist for Aguero’s opener and could have had a goal of his own later in the first half had he put more power on a close-range header.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) started for the second time in a row and was level with Silva for chances created in the game. However, as tempers boiled in the second half he was withdrawn by Guardiola. That might mean he is a little fresher to play a decent role in the Double Gameweeks. Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) played just 25 minutes and seems assured of a place in at least the Arsenal match, while de Bruyne may have the advantage over David Silva on account of the latter’s 90-minute outing at Newcastle.

The defeat was indicative of the underlying problems within Manchester City’s defence this season. They came into Gameweek 24 with the best goal attempts conceded in the box total over the previous four matches, and yet still conceded twice from the three efforts Newcastle mustered there on Tuesday night. A number of teams have scored on Guardiola’s men with their first attacks of matches in 2018/19, and Newcastle continued that trend by making the most of the few opportunities that came their way.

“They shot twice. The first was the goal and the second was the penalty. We had the chances but when that happens, everything is open. Congratulations to Newcastle for the victory.” – Pep Guardiola

With that in mind, Manchester City defensive options look even less attractive for the Double Gameweek now. Ederson (£5.6m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) were the only two real candidates for inclusion considering Guardiola’s rotation policy, but their prices do not offer much value. Neither of them can offer much goal threat on top of their poor clean sheet potential, with Arsenal and Everton their opponents. The Gunners have averaged two goals per away match this season while the Toffees have netted in four of their last five played at Goodison Park.n four of their last five played

Rafa Benitez once again demonstrated his importance to Newcastle as he orchestrated a sensational victory for his side. Many other sides would have panicked after conceding in the 25th second of the match against Manchester City and been picked apart for the rest of the encounter, but the former Liverpool boss kept his players calm and collected. Rather than send them charging up the pitch to get back into the game, Benitez’s men kept it tight, absorbed City’s pressure and did their damage in the second half once they had some wind in their sails.

“It was a great effort from everyone and to win against a team as good as Manchester City. They have everything. They are so good so when you get three points against them you know the players have done really well. Everyone was fighting for each other. We had a couple of situations where they were dangerous on the counter-attack but on the whole we defended well. The game plan was not to concede in the first minute but we reacted very well. We changed things at half-time and we were good enough to score two goals.” – Rafa Benitez

Fabian Schär (£4.6m) demonstrated his credentials once again, but for a different reason than his two-goal performance against Cardiff. Rather than impressing going forward, this time the Swiss international was a rock at the back, topping the Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) tally for the match with nine.

Salomón Rondón (£5.7m) was the man to get Newcastle back in the game, and now has attacking returns in his last two home matches. He assisted against Cardiff before netting on Tuesday night. However, his crucial goal against Manchester City came from just one effort in the whole game, suggesting he remains a budget asset to avoid for now. That particular statistic further proves how fragile City’s defence is though, very little required from opposition to break through it.

Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) was officially Newcastle’s most dangerous player on the night with his two efforts on goal, although one of those was his second-half penalty. The Scottish international further staked his claim on spot-kicks by dispatching the winning goal after Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) was fouled in the area.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dubravka; Ritchie, Lejeune, Lascelles, Schär, Yedlin; Atsu (Kenedy 87′), Longstaff, Hayden, Pérez (Manquillo 90+1′); Rondón.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Danilo (Gündogan 83′), Laporte, Stones, Walker; D Silva, Fernandinho, De Bruyne (B Silva 65′); Sané (Jesus 73′), Aguero, Sterling.

Is David Silva a viable alternative to other city kids..looked good against Newcastle and very less owned ...also saves me from drastically taking hits

Others are also not sure of two starts...actually there's only one other option

Felipe+TAA(if out this week) to sane +4.5m def (-4)

But I don't see any 4.5 def as a good option for few weeks
        Defence is : TAA,Luiz,Doherty,AWB,bednarek

I'm tempted, 3 shots in the box and 2 key passes last night. I was originally thinking he may suffer a bit of rotation but now think Bernardo is more likely to come in for KDB.

Love owning Silva - feels like he'll always chip in with points. However, like all other City assets, he's a rotation risk. City are the riddle of this season - they've got 9 players (Aguero, Jesus, KDB, Silva, Bernardo, Mahrez, Gundogan, Silva, Sterling) to fill 5 spots. Dive in and take the gamble...or don't.

I've got Sane, and pretty happy with that (think he starts at least one of the DGW, maybe two if Mendy is still crocked) - I'd expect David Silva to start one, and be on the bench for the other.

My defense looks like the Mayo flag.

    Foster, 3.9
    Kika, TAA, Digne, Doherty, Bednarek,
    Rich, Salah, Hazard, Anderson, Pogba

It is a risk. But Hazard and Chelsea does not seem to be in form. And the fact that they have City, Blank, Spurs in the next three after Hudd just weighs the difference for me.

Sane is highly owned and will prob be captained by alot of managers.

I think a Liverpool win today probably ends Man City's hope to win the title. Looking at Liverpool's next fixtures, they should easily win 6 of the next 7 and 7 of the next 9. Only 2 difficult fixtures in that run. In the same period, City probably has to win all their games (which include Arsenal, Chelsea and Utd) in order to have any chance.

History tells us that Pep only wins if he is ahead of the chasing pack. He doesn't do comebacks. Not at Barca, Bayern or even first year with City. His philosophy works when the team is in a comfortable position. When his teams are on fire and flying they are motivated and very difficult to catch. But when he is the one doing the chasing, he fails to motivate.

I currently have Sterling and Sane and after the DGW, I think I will only have only Sane for most of the remaining season. City will prioritize CL and even both cups since they have a good opportunity to win both. That will see more rotation in the league games.

Anyone else discouraged by owning premium City assets for the remainder of the season (bar DGWs)?

      Interesting.

I am with you with the only Sane thinking, but I dont think the league is done and dusted if LFC win today.

The fact that City has so many games puts me of owning loads of their players.

Not done and dusted but you can already see a lot of the City players sulking and not believing anymore. Liverpool are out of both cups so have much more time to prepare for games. Only caveat is that they have a much more difficult CL tie but I think Liverpool will prioritize the league over CL anyway. It will only take a Liverpool collapse to not win the league imo.

A win today puts immense pressure on City to beat Arsenal and Chelsea back to back. If they don't and Liverpool win both of their games (which is the likely scenario), it is as good as over barring a collapse or major injuries to key players.

I really admire what Liverpool have done so far this season, but we're only in January, there is plenty of time / points to play for. Before last night's game, City had won 8 in a row. Also, as the title gets closer, how will Klopp and Liverpool deal with the pressure?

Also, the 'Pep doesn't do comebacks' line isn't really fair. The majority of the time they are so good they don't need to. In his three seasons at Bayern they certainly didn't.

At the end of the day, they've scored more goals than any other team in the PL this season. IMO Sterling, Sane and Aguero will all be amongst the highest scorers despite a bit of rotation here and there.

Regarding the comeback thing, look at his team get humiliated by Real Madrid and then Barca the season after in the semis. They got thrashed in the first game and came to the second game with zero motivation or desire to win. Also his first season at City.

I can understand your point, but what about Bayern's comeback against Juventus in the CL, or against Porto? Also, what was he meant to do season one at City? His football takes time to perfect and requires players with very specific characteristics. That simply wasn't possible with Kolarov, Clichy, Zabaleta, Sagna, Fernando etc.

      I was there.

Jota v Jiminez both very good, seemed like Jota was going slightly left whereas Jimi was always looking to get in the central areas.

Doherty much more threatening but I think that was a plan from Nuno to attack our defensively weak left side of Anderson and Masuaku.

Anderson and Auba -> Richarlison and Aguero (-4)?

Smart move? (will be the only two to have a DGW on my team)

Just Anderson to Richa is what I would have done.

Doubt Aguero outscores Auba by that much. And you would prob want Aub back the week after..

You really think auba will score much against City at the Etihad?

Well, in january they have been pretty solid at the back at the Etihad, but prior to that, the did let in goals quite often.

It can go either way really. Aguero is a great option this week, I just dont like the hokey cokey with Auba for a minus 4

Richarlison isn't really doing that bad, better than anderson at the moment thats for sure.
And I can see Aguero playing twice (probably less risky than sterling/sane imo)

I'm thinking of triple captain Salah DGW25 despite the lack of a double. Here's my reasoning. I have Sterling. Possibly getting in Sane or David Silva for Mane but unsure of this. Will definitely swap Anderson for Richarlison as I have just enough funds for this. Silva will probably be rested at some stage as two games come a few days apart. Sane and Sterling are unlikely to play all of both games. So that leaves me both Salah and Mane v West Ham away. So West Ham were trounced by Wolves 3-0. Surely Liverpool can at least emulate that. West Ham defence is pretty suspect though I like Fabianski. Ok pick holes in this please!

I've been thinking similar, good reason is it could be only week Salah is a differential captain.

But he also plays Cardiff dgw35, i think i'm waiting for that week and captain either him or a dgw player.

This is the main reason I'm considering it.
I don't have any city Player too. So.
        Everyone will go City way

Faulty logic there, differential doesn't matter here, you need to pick a time when your captain is expected to score maximum points.

Of course if you're stuck on triple captaining Salah, this week is as good as any, since AFAIK he won't have any DGWs

It might be a good shout. However, you do have the opportunity to captain a ManC player that more then likely plays more then 90 mins, aganist teams that attack.

For me its a wait and see with the TC. Come GW 36, Salah has Hudd at home, and 38 he has Wolves at home..

Typo - the problem with the later gameweeks is that the other chips are likely to come into play and if Liverpool are so far ahead of Man City by then - not a certainty of course - he will be rested at some stage against the easier teams. West Ham game give the opportunity to strengthen the likely lead of 7 points at that stage so there is no way he will be rested

I have all the chips left.
So FH in GW32 & BB in gw35 is the plan.
          So thinking about it

Help me out with this team, gents. Have 2 FTs and 0 ITB. Need to get out Alli and probably Digne before he drops.

    Speroni
    Doherty - WB - Robbo - Bednarek
    Pogba - Salah - KdB
    Auba - Rashford - Ings

    Etheridge, Digne, Punch, Alli

Alli and Digne are 14.0 combined in my team. Am willing to take a hit if needed. Thinking Alli to DSilva and Digne to Danilo, but questioning both.

fair point although i think i could play without either this week - more a case of not being priced out of TAA/suffering digne price drops. can hold this week if leaning towards kolasinac
who would you favour over the next 5 out of TAA / Kola

If Liverpool win tonight then City can't afford to drop more points and therefore Aguero likely to start against Arsenal and Everton. If City are a couple of goals he gets hooked after 60 mins.
