The injury latest on Pogba and Martial after United’s winning run comes to an end

Manchester United’s 100% record under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought to a halt on Tuesday evening but the result could have been much worse for the Red Devils, who fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point against Burnley.

Paul Pogba continued his rich vein of form with a goal from the spot but there were suggestions after full-time that the Frenchman may have picked up an injury, despite him completing 90 minutes at Old Trafford.

We round up the injury latest as well as the main Fantasy talking points and salient manager quotes from United’s last-gasp draw.

Manchester United 2-2 Burnley

  • Goals: Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelöf | Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood
  • Assists: Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez | Jack Cork, Ashley Westwood

Paul Pogba (£8.7m) registered his 11th FPL goal involvement in seven Gameweeks but owners of the game’s second-most-popular midfielder (the Frenchman sits in over 41% of Fantasy squads) face a nervous wait to see if there is any substance in the media reports that suggest he had picked up a groin injury in the 2-2 draw with Burnley last night.

Simon Peach and Jamie Jackson were among the journalists to write that Pogba had limped through the mixed zone after the match, with other reports claiming that the former Juventus midfielder was seen “holding his groin” as he walked down the tunnel at full-time.

The Metro also report that Pogba is set for a scan today.

It should be said that the speculation is purely based on quotes from reporters present at the match, however, with nothing official coming from the club or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as yet.

The interim United boss did offer an explanation as to why Anthony Martial (£7.3m) had missed the visit of the Clarets, however:

He got a slight injury in training, hopefully he will be back for next weekend but no chance today.

Injury aside, Pogba once again racked up some impressive underlying stats despite a much-changed United side not fully hitting their stride.

The France international registered more penalty box touches, attempts on goal, shots in the box and efforts on target than any other player on show at Old Trafford, scoring from the spot after substitute Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) had been felled and then being denied a second goal by a fine Tom Heaton (£4.8m) save late on.

Solskjaer hasn’t been afraid to make changes to a winning United team since his appointment (not keeping the same starting XI for two matches in a row, albeit after having his hand forced in Gameweek 23) but this turned out to be one fixture too far, with his widespread tinkering resulting in a somewhat disjointed display.

Five alterations to the team were made in total, with Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.2m) delivering sub-par displays in central midfield and on the right wing respectively.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m), so impressive when used on the flank against Arsenal in the FA Cup, was a cumbersome presence in a more central role and his deployment as an out-and-out striker meant that Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) was farmed out to the left – the England striker unsurprisingly delivering his least effective performance since Solskjaer took charge.

Rashford’s purple patch of FPL form thus came to a (hopefully) temporary end, with the United striker poking one glorious chance wide early on and later taking too long to finish after an excellent Pogba pass over the top.

Solskjaer defended his decision to play Lukaku as a central striker after the match:

Rom has done really well against Burnley before. He has scored and he is a handful. With Anthony injured, we thought that was the best option with Rashy out there. Of course, he got a couple of chances but today wasn’t his day.

The feeling that United missed the dynamism and link-up play of Lingard was evidenced after his game-changing introduction on 63 minutes, while the importance of the bustling Ander Herrera (£5.0m) in the central midfield three was underscored by Pereira’s disappointing display in his stead.

Pereira, indeed, was culpable for Burnley’s opening goal: the youngster being dispossessed by Jack Cork (£4.6m), who fed Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) to hammer the Clarets into a 1-0 lead.

Unsurprisingly, Solskjaer defended Pereira’s inclusion too:

No, it was the right decision to make. We had a couple of niggles and unfortunately he [Pereira] was involved in the first goal but that’s the whole team.

We played our way into trouble there instead of starting off with the forward pass we ended up back to the keeper and it’s just another thing we have to learn from.

Andreas will be better off for having this experience, no problem about that.

The hope for those who own Fantasy assets of Manchester United is that Solskjaer has perhaps learned a lesson about making widespread changes to his starting XI, particularly when a few of those concerned – i.e. Lingard and Herrera; Rashford in a central role – made the team tick in the first place.

United’s defence wasn’t overly tested by a Burnley side who mustered only six shots on goal but they were suspect whenever the Clarets did break, with Chris Wood (£6.2m) finding himself unmarked to nod home Ashley Westwood‘s (£4.5m) cross on 81 minutes.

Victor Lindelof (£4.9m), who bundled home the stoppage-time equaliser, was again the stand-out member of the United backline, with Phil Jones (£5.1m) continuing to look shaky alongside him.

While Burnley were indebted to some fine saves from Heaton, which included a superb re-adjustment from a Lukaku flick, they fully merited their point at Old Trafford.

We had highlighted last week how Sean Dyche’s side had look much-improved after their early-season struggles and that encouraging progress continued here, with Wood and Barnes posing plenty of problems in what has become a regular strike partnership in Dyche’s now-familiar 4-4-2.

This was Barnes’ tenth straight Premier League start and he has been joined by Wood in the starting XI in eight of them.

Continuity has been key in Burnley’s resurgence and Dyche named the same team that lined up in Gameweek 23, with the fit-again Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) being held back on the bench.

Ben Mee (£4.6m) and James Tarkowski (£4.7m) are something approaching back to their best after a dip in form at the start of the campaign, which perhaps bodes well for clean sheets ahead given that the Clarets sit second in our Season Ticker for defence over the next five Gameweeks.

Dyche rhapsodised afterwards:

In the first half, particularly, a lot of our forward play was very good and the two centre-forwards were excellent, particularly in the first 60 minutes.

Behind them, I can’t really fault anyone. Some people question Jeff (Hendrick), but he plays all over the place and gets on with it every single time, without question. He accepts the role, drives on and delivers.

Dwight (McNeil) was good again and Westy and Corky are beginning to get that connection again.

The back four were resolute and strong and Tom, behind that, showed assuredness.

We have been building back towards what we can be. I think everyone can see that.

Suddenly, we are five unbeaten and very close to being five wins, not just three wins and two draws. A couple of decisions and who knows?

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw; Matic, Pereira (Lingard 62′) Pogba; Mata, Lukaku (Sanchez 67′), Rashford.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Cork, Westwood, McNeil (Gudmundsson 76′); Barnes, Wood.

Obviously pending if/ how he plays tonight, am I right to hold onto Wilson for next GW and then reassess or should I consider shipping for Jimi? He just keeps dropping in value which is just frustrating because he can be such a great value FPL asset

He's been hugely frustrating for weeks upon weeks - I'm in two minds. His talent is unquestionable and he's beyond nailed WHEN he's fit.

      Hopefully he plays tonight.

The kicker for me in holding onto him are his fixtures in the blank GW's:

      GW27 - Wolves home
      GW31 - Newcastle home
      GW33 - Burnley home

The price tag also - got in at 6.0 so he's not burning a hole in folks' budgets... but he really does need to start playing now & less of this injury drama

I replied to you a few pages back on this, you may have missed it.
But I'm amazed at how much his price has gone up and down this season, given he's still the third highest scoring forward in the game, the flags have been frustrating.

Agree with this which is half the frustration of owning him

I never sold as had at one point 0.7m of value in him - now down to 0.5 but still a lot

I'm at the point that I'm not too concerned by his price anymore as I think I'll have him for the rest of the season, as noted above he carries over the BGWs well.

His returns are unpredictable, so I'm happy to have him as a budget forward option.

Yep totally - its a stark reminder of just how productive he is that when you look at the forwards charts he's sitting in third place.

Hopefully he makes it easy on us and starts playing again and the returns keep coming... it's rarely that straightforward though 🙁

I'd imagine he'll start next year at a very inflated price - maybe 8.0 depending on how his next 10-15 GW's go

                Quite likely.
Think some players become a victim of their own success.
He cost me £6m and has more points than Aguero, Lacazette, and Rashford, what's not to like about that, I don't expect him to score every week for his price.

Yeah, it'd just be awesome if we got a few more big payoffs out of him before end of season - he has the ability, and his fixtures become excelent very soon - i'm definitely erring on the side of patience with him.

Jimmy is tearing it up in the same price bracket though, so just some certainty would be nice - he's either fit or he's injured, so we can plan & act accordingly!

So I currently have front line of Rash, Wilson (kamara)
I have Jota and Doherty which is why I haven't jumped on the Jimi gravy train already

Just thinking Wilson may be a nice little differential to keep if he stays healthy

        Exactly mate!

Funnily enough when he looked to be injured again for this week I decided to sit him 1st on bench and play 4-5-1 so I'm hoping he doesn't play/ haul for once!

But I'd really love to hold onto him ... I want to play him vs CAR as if fit he could be golden and then as you say he has some lovely fixtures if they can keep him in one piece ....

Ok, in need of some advice here boys! Have this squad available:

    Alisson
    AWB - Robertson - Doherty
    Salah - Pogba - Richarlison - Hazard
    Jimenez - Auba - Rashford

    Bench: Button, Camarasa, Digne, Yoshida

    2FT and 1.2M ITB

    Alternatives:
A: Aubameyang and Camarasa to Llorente and Sterling/Sanè
B: Aubameyang and Digne to Agüero and Laporte.
C: Any other ideas to implement more DGWers?

Leaning towards B as it would make it easier to make transfers post GW 25 with Son for Hazard and Auba for Agüero.. But not sure about Agüeros gametime for GW25.. Yuk..

Teams realised if they want to get anything from the game they actually need to cross their own half way line.
Walker, Stones, and Delph are not the giant ice wall of a defensive line some teams thought they were last season.

Assuming he sees Laporte and Stones as the future partnership for the next few seasons.
To be honest, Otamendi isn't the best defender either really, teams were just terrified to attack them last year in fear of getting beaten 4/5 - nil. It became acceptable to 'only' lose 2/3 - nil to them last year.

Still doing well, but definitely more matches where they are not playing in top gear.
I think buying Mahrez was a mistake, created too much uncertainty and they lost a great future player in Sancho who could easily have done the job. It must make for a bit of a bad atmosphere for some of the guys when they realised that Pep will just buy players rather than look within the club. Feel sorry for Foden, how is he ever going to break into the team?
Can't understand Otamendi's complete cut-off from the team, don't think it was handled well at all.
Teams are realising that you can't just sit back and soak up wave after wave and that City are actually gettable if you go at them - definitely breeds more confidence, I think losing that Leicester game was a real catalyst for other teams to have a go.

Good point on Mahrez and Sancho, its the same problem Chelsea are having with Hudson-Odoi. These young players are now realising that there are first team opportunities to be had elsewhere, and are starting to resist being "stockpiled" behind countless first teamers at massive clubs. Which is a good thing IMO as we get to see more talent actually on the pitch.

And also agree with your last point, as soon as the mask slips a little, teams jump on it to exploit it. Most clear example was after Fergie left Utd. Suddenly teams realised after 26 years they were finally beatable again, and soon everyone was at it! I think it was Lyon in the champions league rather than Leicester though that first highlighted the City frailties at the back.

Good points but i don't really have an issue with the mahrez signing. Only that it should have been done in conjunction with a dm which to be fair, they probably assumed they had sewn up with jorginho who would have added an extra dimension to their play.

I do wonder about the "gettable" point though. Peps Barca (who admittedly were on another planet to this City team and had Messi) were also very "gettable" when attacked. It seems to be a Pep thing with his teams. Kind of like the death star. Look ultra powerful but somewhere deep inside, has a soft core. Similar to Bayern when he was there. Can never forget how Madrid shredded them on the counter.

As an aside, think i heard Joe mention you were a doctor on a previous scoutcast. Medical doctor?

Tbf they have a very good season, not as good as last year but still decent. Liverpool seems to have a little more stability or said differently, when their not good they still get results because their low level is better than City´s. City also a bit unlucky in some of their games opponents have like one or two shots on goal and they score. That said, still think that CM of Fernandino, KDB and Silva as good as it is in some aspects of the game they´re also vulnerable, more so than LIverpool, in teams doing counters on them. And Pep must be beside himself in agony over his fullbacks, Walker and Danilo and Mendy can´t defend properly

In response to a question about his squads energy levels with the current fixture build up Pep said something along the lines of 'I told them to rest when they retire'.

It immediately irked me and made me wonder about the atmosphere in the dressing room. Anyone who's worked in an environment where they do lots of overtime to meet deadlines etc will tell you that a dismissive manager of the work your putting in is an extremely demotivating thing. Putting in the level of work their players are to compete in all comps, training for so many teams in quick succession, learning about the various opponents, etc etc, wouldn't just be physically tiring, but mentally also. Even with squad rotation which eases the physical side of things, the mental exhaustion of this would weigh on all the players.

Obviously it's impossible to know if what Pep said in that interview was actually something he said as dismissively in the dressing room, how the squad would react to a comment like that, etc. But if he did say that to the players, and they are feeling both physically and especially mentally tired, that's an extremely negative statement.

      1. Liverpool improved dramatically and this has put huge pressure on them, maybe somewhat unexpected pressure, which could point the finger to complacency!
      2. KDB's absence would certainly have had a negative effect.
      3. Lack of adequate back-up for Fernandinho
      4. The Pep effect wearing off a little perhaps.
      5. Teams not as scared of them as they were last season.

I say summet mentality and squad management. Once going to the top it's hard to keep the momentum and tend to overestimate the potential. Some players should have been sold as they were very hard to motivate and new ones to be brought in, especially in defence.

      It is fine margins:

      1) They are the champions so teams step up against them
      2) They needed to buy a backup LB and DM
      3) Some luck e.g. Boly goal against them was handball and should have been disallowed. That is 2pts there. Liverpool haven't really had that much bad luck,

Less energy is a big factor, whether it's due to fatigue, complacency or both. I was at the Palace game and when it was 1-3, everyone worked hard to get the ball back in play whenever it went out. Yesterday, Dubravka just stood there with the ball at his feet at 2-1 and nobody bothered to sprint at him.

We've been unlucky with injuries, but the team hasn't adjusted properly. When Fernandinho was injured, Stones and Gundogan tried to fill in but Delph would have been a better choice. When Mendy's injured and can't bomb down the left, Sane can't cut inside as much so he becomes ineffectual very quickly. When Aguero's injured and his deadly runs aren't being made, Jesus is far too static and doesn't make the defenders work.

Add that to some amazing/unlucky goals conceded, Mahrez's missed penalty at Anfield (why didn't Jesus take it?), plus a bit of luck for Liverpool, and a huge points gap isn't so unbelievable.

I noticed that too, I was scouting Sterling for a possible GW25 TC, but he seemed tired and often the wrong place. I might be wrong though as I am a terrible scout

Got Sterling but looking at adding another City attacker:

    A) Auba to Kun (Save other transfer and reserve it next week)

    Or

    B) Digne and Pogba to Bednarek and Sane (2FT)

    1. Rainer
      • 7 Years

Kun if you think he starts both, bit of a waste of two FTs if not, imo.

Like Sane but wouldn't be keen on selling Pogba, even if he does miss Leicester.

Only have Richarlison, want a City attacker too, for the DGW. Decided on Aguero.

    Fabianski
    Digne* | Luiz | Trippier
    Hazard | Salah | Richarlison | Pogba
    Jimenez | Firmino | Rashford
Button* | TAA* | Camarasa* | Pereira VsX

    A) Digne - > Tomkins
    B) Luiz + Firmino - > Bednarek + Aguero
    C) Trippier + Firmino - > Tomkins + Aguero
    D) Digne + Trippier + Firmino - > Doherty + Tomkins + Aguero (-4)

Which move seems most logical? Will be priced out soon. Help!!

    If Pog's injured: Hamer + Pog → Ederson + Richarlison (2FT)

Would give me Ederson, Richarlison, Aguero as DGW players... (and Digne on my bench). And saves me having to play Fab against Liverpool.
Other options involve getting rid of Digne, but then I can't also solve the keeper conundrum, and I can't afford Sane or Sterling without taking a hit.

I believe Trippier is the better player of the two, and that Spurs value Premeirship games above Champions League so they will start Trippier in most/ all Premiership games

Most likely Aguero in the tougher fixture (ARS).

Its hard to predict how they will react now.

    Hi guys,

I am really stumped with trying to find Digne replacement.

Anyone that's not from Chelsea, Liverpool, nor Everton.
Also not WanBi, Doherty, and Kola (already have them).

    Any ideas appreciated.

I'm now leaning towards keeping him. Brighton's fixtures are good though, and Duffy would free up some money

PVA or Pereira. Bednarek as a budget enabler.
