Alonso benched and Higuain makes league debut as Son returns

Gameweek 24 comes to a conclusion on Wednesday evening as four top-flight matches take place.

Bournemouth v Chelsea and Southampton v Crystal Palace get us underway at 19:45 GMT, with Liverpool v Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur v Watford scheduled to kick off at 20:00 GMT.

Marcos Alonso is benched for the first time in the league this season as Emerson Palmieri – who impressed in the Carabao Cup semi-final, second leg against Spurs – is handed a start at left-back, while Gonzalo Higuaín makes his Premier League bow up front for the Blues.

Eden Hazard is thus deployed on the left flank for Maurizio Sarri’s side, with Pedro getting the nod on the other wing.

The Cherries are without Callum Wilson this evening, with Joshua King leading the line for Eddie Howe’s side.

Ryan Fraser starts as expected, while there are places on the bench for January signings Dominic Solanke and Chris Mepham.

Son Heung-min is back in Spurs’ starting XI and looks set to play just off Fernando Llorente as Mauricio Pochettino once again deploys a wing-back system.

Christian Eriksen is also primed for a more advanced role but Kieran Trippier only makes the bench.

Javi Gracia has made three changes to his side from Watford’s last league outing, with Daryl Janmaat, Craig Cathcart and Will Hughes drafted in.

Virgil van Dijk has recovered from illness to line up at centre-half, with one of Jordan Henderson or Georginio Wijnaldum potentially filling in at right-back after a cursory look at the teamsheet.

Xherdan Shaqiri joins Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the Liverpool attack.

Claude Puel has made three alterations to his Leicester City side following the 4-3 defeat to Wolves: Jonny Evans, James Maddison and Marc Albrighton being handed recalls.

The fit-again Vicente Guaita returns between the sticks for Crystal Palace, with Wayne Hennessey named among the substitutes.

The Eagles are otherwise unchanged from the team that lost 4-3 to Liverpool in Gameweek 23.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has named the same eleven players in his starting XI that lined up against Everton, meanwhile.

Bournemouth XI (4-2-3-1): Boruc, Clyne, S Cook, Ake, Smith, Surman, Gosling, Stanislas, Fraser, Brooks, King.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Emerson Palmieri, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Higuain, Hazard.

Southampton XI (3-5-2): McCarthy, Bednarek, Stephens, Vestergaard, Valery, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Targett, Redmond, Ings.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita, Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, van Aanholt, Kouyaté, Milivojević, McArthur, Townsend, Ayew, Zaha.

Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson, Henderson, van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Keita, Shaqiri, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel, Ricardo, Evans, Maguire, Chilwell, Mendy, Ndidi, Albrighton, Gray, Maddison, Vardy.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Aurier, Winks, Sissoko, Rose, Eriksen, Son, Llorente.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster, Janmaat, Mariappa, Cathcart, Holebas, Hughes, Capoue, Cleverley, Pereyra, Deulofeu, Deeney.

Agree with you re BSilva. They definitely click when he’s playing.

I’m going to gamble on Pep starting KdB, Fernandinho and BSilva vs Arsenal then it’ll probably be DSilva in for KdB vs Everton.

Who knows! I think it’s worth the risk given the DGW.

If Pogba is out injured and Son is struggling with fatigue again, I think I'll be going against the grain and backing triple Man City attack - Sane (C), Aguero, KDB. To get this it's just a -4 of Auba + Pogba > Aguero + KDB.

I know many are being cautious and saying rotation will be rife etc etc, but I think it's a gamble worth taking. We are talking about the best attacking team in the league, who absolutely need to win these 2 games against a pair of opponents struggling defensively and who won't park the bus.

Is it really that big a 'risk'? Rotation doesn't mean zero minutes in one of the games. It could mean 2 x 65 minutes. It could mean 90 minutes plus a 20-minute cameo. Loads of potential points on offer. Very conservative approach to ignore City in a DGW in my opinion.

Fair point a 35 min in one game can mean 60 min in the other.
Plus city will be stung into action I assume.

Personally I am saving my transfer this week because I don't think it is worth a minus 4 in my case unless there are injuries.

do you need a points hit to remove them again?

One hit to remove two of them. No big deal. I'll hold onto 1 of them through BGW27 and cover with rest of squad.

if Pogba is injured I might punt on Jesus and Bilva - any combination could work really (or fail), gonna need a bit of luck obviously

Did you buy Pogba late? He's gone up 0.8m since I bought. Can't sell unless for good

got him at 7.9, I won't be selling Pogba unless he's confirmed out for a month+, this move would involve Quaner -> Jesus (and benching Pogba)

Agreed, I'm talking about if Pogba is genuinely injured and out for weeks, not just a little knock and back almost straight away.

I’m not against it but my only concern, what happens in gw 27? Bench? Ship out for a hit?

They lost vs Newcastle. Their form is terrible. I’ll take my chances and just go with Sterling.

It's all relative. City being "terrible" in one or two games doesn't mean they can't then come out and put 3 or 4 goals past both Arsenal and Everton. It's City and they can hit back. To me it's just a very dull way to play the game if you're not going to have a crack at a City DGW. What's the worst that can happen really? You take a hit or two and they don't explode.

The rotation risk is getting slightly overplayed. Pep is not going to send out a second 11. They are desperate. I think all the big guns will at least start 1 game and perhaps feature off the bench in the other, or start both and come off early in both. Either way, points scoring potential is high.

I was thinking back to all the podcast stuff from Jonty.
How can players make a rise up the rankings if everyone has similar players?
He got his answer today and yesterday if you ignore most of those players you would have leapfrogged a lot of people!

I reckon the only thing that’s saving Hazard at the mo is Huddersfield at home. Literally any other fixture and people would be selling in their droves

I think i can stomach hazard troll points at this point
He has been awful value for weeks and has blank gw coming up

Agreed 100% it was the only thing that Huddersfield should be a Chelsea with lots of goals.
But I don't think Higuain is used to his Chelsea teamates yet a very different striker to Giroud.
Higuain makes smart runs and waits for the early ball time and again. Not a hold up player.

For all the people saying there will be a City backlash after losing. Well, they lost tp Leicester and then lost twice more in the subsequent 3 games. They were rubbish yesterday. Haven't looked the same team in quite a while now.

this is why I like the idea of Bilva and Jesus, they have been better with those two in the team, maybe they return

Just can’t make my mind up:

    A) Haz, Wilson > Sterling, Rondon/ Ings (Double MCI mids)
    B) Hamer, Wilson > Boruc, Jimi (keep Haz for HUD)
    C) Haz, Wilson > JWP, Kun (take a punt on Kun playing enough mins)

    1FT 0.2itb
    Fab, Hamer*
    Robbo, Laporte, Luiz, Doherty, AWB
    Salah, Sané, Haz*, Pogba, Jota
    Rash, Wilson*, Kamara

    Advice appreciated!
