Alonso benched and Higuain makes league debut as Son returns

Gameweek 24 comes to a conclusion on Wednesday evening as four top-flight matches take place.

Bournemouth v Chelsea and Southampton v Crystal Palace get us underway at 19:45 GMT, with Liverpool v Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur v Watford scheduled to kick off at 20:00 GMT.

Marcos Alonso is benched for the first time in the league this season as Emerson Palmieri – who impressed in the Carabao Cup semi-final, second leg against Spurs – is handed a start at left-back, while Gonzalo Higuaín makes his Premier League bow up front for the Blues.

Eden Hazard is thus deployed on the left flank for Maurizio Sarri’s side, with Pedro getting the nod on the other wing.

The Cherries are without Callum Wilson this evening, with Joshua King leading the line for Eddie Howe’s side.

Ryan Fraser starts as expected, while there are places on the bench for January signings Dominic Solanke and Chris Mepham.

Son Heung-min is back in Spurs’ starting XI and looks set to play just off Fernando Llorente as Mauricio Pochettino once again deploys a wing-back system.

Christian Eriksen is also primed for a more advanced role but Kieran Trippier only makes the bench.

Javi Gracia has made three changes to his side from Watford’s last league outing, with Daryl Janmaat, Craig Cathcart and Will Hughes drafted in.

Virgil van Dijk has recovered from illness to line up at centre-half, with one of Jordan Henderson or Georginio Wijnaldum potentially filling in at right-back after a cursory look at the teamsheet.

Xherdan Shaqiri joins Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the Liverpool attack.

Claude Puel has made three alterations to his Leicester City side following the 4-3 defeat to Wolves: Jonny Evans, James Maddison and Marc Albrighton being handed recalls.

The fit-again Vicente Guaita returns between the sticks for Crystal Palace, with Wayne Hennessey named among the substitutes.

The Eagles are otherwise unchanged from the team that lost 4-3 to Liverpool in Gameweek 23.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has named the same eleven players in his starting XI that lined up against Everton, meanwhile.

Bournemouth XI (4-2-3-1): Boruc, Clyne, S Cook, Ake, Smith, Surman, Gosling, Stanislas, Fraser, Brooks, King.

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Emerson Palmieri, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Higuain, Hazard.

Southampton XI (3-5-2): McCarthy, Bednarek, Stephens, Vestergaard, Valery, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Targett, Redmond, Ings.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita, Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, van Aanholt, Kouyaté, Milivojević, McArthur, Townsend, Ayew, Zaha.

Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson, Henderson, van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Keita, Shaqiri, Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel, Ricardo, Evans, Maguire, Chilwell, Mendy, Ndidi, Albrighton, Gray, Maddison, Vardy.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Aurier, Winks, Sissoko, Rose, Eriksen, Son, Llorente.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster, Janmaat, Mariappa, Cathcart, Holebas, Hughes, Capoue, Cleverley, Pereyra, Deulofeu, Deeney.

Who would u prefer more until the end of the season, Brooks or Jota? (Without considering price)

Brooks - Favourable fixtures from gw30, no blank gw, slightly rotation risks if there are midweek fixtures(?)
Jota - OOP, double gws possibly but one of the game in double gw will be against big teams

      Brooks by a mile.

Their fixtures for the run in are incredible and he's pretty undropable on current form. Wilson also out for at least a month or so means rotation less likely. And you have to consider price really, nearly 1 mil cheaper.

        Their prices reflect their reliability.
Brook Madison Jota and a host of others in the same boat.
Fraser in that range by far the most reliable.

Just looked at the stats from the last nights Chelsea game.

    Higuain
    Minutes played: 65
Touches in the penalty area: 1
    Goal attempts: 0
    Shots inside the box: 0

😀 I mean what a debut from him.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

One of the big problems is their backroom staff.
After years of buying players who have no value at the end of their contracts, they have gone the other way.
They bought the Yank to increase revenues across the pond and can't keep a youngster who has the world at his feet.
Players won't want to go there if their contracts won't be renewed after 30.

I have AWB. Jonny looks incredible value at 4.3 but I also have Doherty so not sure about a Wolves double up. Maybe S. Cook for when Bou's fixtures turn?

    Anyone else?

I have Kiko 4.2 since GW12 and played him twice unfortunately benched for 9pts previous week before injured. You don't buy these players for any other reason than cheap and play every week ideally

You see these ridiculous expensive defences of Alonso Robbo Digne Doherty AWB and then people cry when their 5th defender gets good points. I love cheap defender bench fodder so I have easy decisions and their only job is injury cover auto subs

Ha - my current back line to the man! Though I did get Doherty at 4.4 and AWB at 4.0, and Alonso is toast after this GW.

My real bench problem is Mr Brooks keeps clogging it up with points.

Many people got AWB and Doherty at base price. I got Digne at 4.8 as well. I rarely ever play more than 3 at the back. It's not been reliable to play more than 3 for a while now

I've had double Pool defence for some time and its been very profitable. Poor last two weeks though so it's a worry going forward. Pereira looks a sensible move considering his games in 31 and 33.

I am making the same move myself, to Pereira. But that is of is of course because I allready own TAA.

It depends on a few questions. Do you own Pool defense? Do you have a good enough team to bench Pereira 1 or 2 of the next 3? His fixtures ain't too good.

I would have a Pool defender if you don't own one. If you do I would go Pereira

I know Hazard got a tasty fixture, but I have to get rid of him if I need a city cover for DGW. Also for captaincy, Salah got an away game vs DGW for city, I would probably go for a city player

Most of Salah good returns are away against non top 6 sides. You can't rely on any popular City asset playing big minutes both games and they were awful against Newcastle

Tru, but I’m expecting a come back from city and if sterling hauls, I don’t wanna miss it. but you’re probably right Salah is a safer pick as you can’t guarantee city players will start both games.

I have no attacking City cover just I'm not convinced may/any of them will get much more than 90mins. As I say it's arguably valid if free but it certainly isn't a no-brainer especially as you say you already have Sane who I'd probably cap ahead of Sterling anyway assuming Mendy is still broken.

You are thinking of bringing in 4 players having a blank 27 so you must have a plan to play 11 in gw27.

      1. Eze Really?

No. i need to make choices. I hope Pogba is OK. If so he won't be touched.
Digne has to go but not critical now.
Can do Kun and Auba Week 26.
Richa I have the the money for after selling Haz to get Kun.
Found out I cannot afford Siggy.
I will end up with Digne Sane Richa and can move 1 out GW27 (Probably Digne)

That would have been a disgraceful loss to a world class team, but to a mid-table team just sheer embarrassment. Luiz is hands down the best long ball passer in the league, if not world, but holy s--t he has to be one of the worst defenders. He has so many errors from being casual, yet gets caught out being overly aggressive at other times.
Their entire backline is incapable of marking men, they all just wander in the direction of the ball like school kids leaving so much space.

    Fabianski
    Doherty Digne AWB
    Pogba Rich Salah Sane
    Auba Ings Rashford
    Hennessey Bednarek Daniels Camarasa

I am thinking about the following:
    GW25: Auba+Digne to Kun+Danilo
    GW27: Rich+Camarasa to Son+Moutinho

I want to get a mancity def rather than Ederson because of the Digne no-show. I wouldn't mind losing Auba for GW26 and I am going to (C) Kun for the DGW. Rich to Son is a no-brainer really and getting rid of Camarasa means I will have a playing MID from the in-form Wolves for GW27.

Is there a glaring hole that I am missing here?

Leaves you very bare bones gw27 and relying on the likes of Bednarek away at Arsenal with 3 City players on your bench including a dubious Danilo would be my main worry. If Pogba's injury turns out to be anything you are in bother too so I certainly wouldn;t do it ahed of getting Pogba news probably on Friday.

      1. Esalman
        • 14 Years

That's true. Another option I have thought of is to forget about the DGW, Kun or Danilo, keep Auba and get Robertson+Son by rolling FT- leaves me in much better shape for GW27. Basically need to choose between hope for City firing back (and prepare for GW25) or expect low returns from their tough fixtures/rotation (and prepare for GW27).

I've gone down the route of hoping City don't kill it (or at least any killing isn't huge pts for Sane/Sterling/Kun) and am keeping Auba rather than swapping a player I'd immediately want back again but obviously there's risk either way.

Auba's fixt look great gw26-28 though and Sane is a viable City captain punt already but obviously only hindsight knows - I could be sulking about the gw that killed my season in a few days as my only City player is Ederson lol!

Keep Auba or Switch to Kun and buy back cheaper ?

Is the use of 2 FTs worth for both DGW chance and budget management ?

I would keep Auba because I am not confident Kun will start both dgw games. You need to take a position on this.
