FPL Team News and Injury Round-up – Double Gameweek 25

Our round-up of the pre-match press conferences starts with the two teams who are in action twice in Gameweek 25: Manchester City and Everton.

Pep Guardiola confirmed that Vincent Kompany was his only injury-enforced absentee for the visit of Arsenal before delivering the following update on Benjamin Mendy (knee) when asked about the Frenchman’s availability:

Really I don’t know. After the minutes he played at Burton he had two or three days not training. In the last two training sessions, he was able to train so we’ll see day by day.

Yerry Mina (foot) and Phil Jagielka (unknown) are again sidelined for Everton, who will make late checks on Leighton Baines (hip) and Idrissa Gueye (minor injury).

Lucas Digne, of course, will miss the first of Everton’s Gameweek 25 fixtures through suspension.

Across Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that both Trent Alexander-Arnold (knee) and Joe Gomez (leg) will miss out on the visit of West Ham United on Monday.

Klopp said:

No return date for Joe [Gomez]. Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is getting better, really close, I would hope he’s in full training next week. But not for now.

Marko Arnautovic (foot) is uncertain to be ready for the visit of Liverpool and will be assessed by medical staff on Saturday but Manuel Pellegrini was more optimistic of Lukasz Fabianski‘s (arm) chances of featuring on Monday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provided an update on Paul Pogba (groin) and Anthony Martial (knock) in his presser this morning, saying:

I don’t think there’s anything [serious] with Paul [Pogba]. Anthony [Martial] has done some rehab work, so he will try a session today, so I would imagine he would be available to be involved.

We’ve not had a proper session since the game, so hopefully, both of them can get through that.

Arsenal reported that Laurent Koscielny (jaw) has returned to full training, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles (knee) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (foot) will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s match against Manchester City.

Unai Emery said of Denis Suarez‘s potential availability:

I know the player. He started to train yesterday and today with the group. I think he is good, he adapts quickly and he is a player with quality.

I am thinking about all the players. If he starts, I have confidence in him.

He can play right, left, he can play inside like a No. 10. I will use him in all of these positions. He played on the left for us with Sevilla, with Villarreal more right-winger and with Barcelona more inside.

There is no change for [Mesut]. Denis is coming here because we have a lot of problems with the winger. That is the reason.

Maurizio Sarri had plenty to say about Chelsea’s current plight in his presser, including the following comments on Eden Hazard:

I think that he’s changing. He was used to playing as an individual player. Now he has to play in a particular way. It’s not easy for him because he became Hazard playing in another way, so I think very well it’s not easy. But I can see that, now, he is more available to play in this way. He needs to improve, of course.

That’s normal. He’s fantastic from the technical point of view, and I think he can do more tactically. At the moment, it’s not easy for our striker to play in this team. We have a lot of individual players like Hazard, Willian and Pedro, so it’s not easy for the striker to do the right movement at the right time.

Ben Davies (groin) will miss out for Spurs, who will face a Newcastle United side still without Paul Dummett (hamstring), Ki Sung-yueng (hamstring), Jonjo Shelvey (thigh) and Mohamed Diame (groin).

New signing Antonio Barreca has been added to the Magpies’ match-day squad, though fellow deadline day recruit Miguel Almirón won’t feature because of visa issues.

Callum Wilson (knee) will be out for three to four weeks for Bournemouth, while the Cherries’ opponents on Saturday, Cardiff City, still have concerns over Victor Camarasa (knock).

Roy Hodgson suggested James Tomkins (hamstring) will be fit to feature this weekend and even hinted that Michy Batshuayi could be involved, saying:

I will see him this afternoon. I’ll wait here to meet him and speak with him, he was fit enough for Valencia so there’s no reason not to play for us. But I need to speak to him to find out how he feels and make a decision.

Bernardo (hamstring) has returned to training for Brighton and will be assessed ahead of the visit of Watford, with the Hornets again set to be without Abdoulaye Doucoure (knee) and Kiko Femenia (hamstring).

Ralph Hasenhuttl will check on the fitness of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (head) ahead of the trip to Turf Moor, where hosts Burnley welcome back Robbie Brady (groin) from injury.

Philip Billing (knee) is back in training for Huddersfield Town, meanwhile.

Nuno Espirito Santo, Claude Puel and Claudio Ranieri didn’t report any fresh injury scares in their respective press conferences.

    Lloris
    Robbo Alonso Doherty AWB
    Sane (c) Hazard Salah Pogba
    Jimenez Rashford

    Kante TAA 4.4

    A) Save
    B) Alonso out for Clyne/Cook or Tarkoswki/Mee

A gives more flexibility but Alonso and Hazard are gone anyway after
B keeps enough ITB Hazard 4.4 out for Auba Jota

Burnley has Soton home and confirmed games in 31&33.
Bournemouth has Cardiff away and confirmed games in 31&33

GW25 brings us the first double gameweek of the season with Manchester City and Everton playing home games at the weekend and then facing each other at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. Now for me, this week's captain has to be a Manchester City player. Some people have suggested the likes of Salah, Hazard or Pogba could be better options with just one fixture but even if City only had the Arsenal game you could point to the fact that the Citizens have scored 40 goals in their 12 home league games this season whilst Arsenal have conceded 22 in 11 away games- that’s even more than Huddersfield - and then you get the Everton game as well.

On the face of it, Arsenal and Everton don’t look like the dream pair of opponents for a team with a double gameweek, but at least they should both let City play. I can’t see either of those sides putting loads of men behind the ball and we could hopefully be in for some really entertaining fixtures.

I only currently hold Leroy Sané so my armband is with him though Sterling is arguably the better pick if you have him. Sergio Aguero could also be in for a big gameweek.

The major caveat to all this of course is Pep roulette. Does the ever looming threat of rotation put you off or is the prospect of the leagues highest scorers chasing down a five point gap at the top of the table over two games an opportunity that’s just too good to be missed?

    Triple captain anyone?

Who are you captaining this gameweek and why?

Why is Sterling 'arguably' the better pick, out of interest? Still haven't decided between him and Sane.

Just because he can play on either side and with Mendy potentially coming back into the team, could go either way really.

Forget Mendy, he won't impact on Sané's minutes when both fit imo...

Pep roulette is the biggest factor for me - would happily Triple Captain Sane or Sterling if i knew they would start both and get at least 150 mins across the two games

I have a theory on this, in that I think pep realised he may have overrotated players during Xmas period which was one of the reasons it led to a loss of form.

With this in mind (and also that sane and Sterling had a good rest up to newc game) I think there could be a lot less rotation than most assume.

Whether this right or not time will tell

I am getting in Sane and Aguero and captaining Sane.
Not cold to triple captain though due to rotation threat.

Apart from Laporte & Ederson, do u think any defender (less than 5.5m) will start both matches- Stones or Danilo?

Pulled the plug finally and went Haz to Sane for a hit. The allure of two games and Chelsea's poor form did it for me. Won't triple cap but think he will do well

Surprised to see Aguero leading the captaincy poll, but could definitely score well. Sane or sterling for me, guessing sterling is so low because most don’t own him rather than rotation fears

Got both Sane and Sterling (transferred in for this gw) and very tempted to go for TC.

For me Sane just nudges is as by my reckoning he is slightly more likely to get more game time and his form appears to be better.

Good post though and think these fixtures are far more appealing than away at Newcastle.

      Sane.

You have to have the balls to captain a player in a double game week no matter the opponents. This is what we live for and you need to look at the odds and as obvious as it is, double the games then double the chance to get points.

Salah proved midweek he can't do it every game and even as a rotation risk, Sane is worth the armband.

Sane I suppose, not that pumped about it given Mendy's possible return (against Everton I guess) - have a feeling Bilva is the one who plays twice but I'd need to remove Haz for him (who could haul himself)

Kun or Sane. The latter out of security, the former out of explosiveness. The former is already a differential out of the template, but captaining him, Kun, and hoping for a hat-trick of one in two fixtures is a dream (come true), though I may be content with 2 goals from Sane in two.

Sane looks like the pick I'll be going for.

I've done Hazard > Sane because I don't fully trust Chelsea or Hazard right now, and there was no way I was going into the DGW without a City player.

There's a chance I'll go for Sterling too (or maybe even Aguero) but I don't have them yet so Sane is currently my captain. Part of me is considering a TC but I'm not fully convinced.

If I had all the City assets I might be tempted by Aguero.. actually I might go any direction really, I think there are merits for Sane, Sterling, and Aguero

Go for it Geoff. TC all the way this week. I'm still scarred from Kanes DGW last season. I knew that was risky at the time... but Sterling TC just feels right this time. I good luck

      TC Sane here.
      I have Aguero too.

Main reason is there simply isnt a better, current obvious time to play it. I intend to WC in 34 and FH in 32. Currently that leaves Sal v Hudd in 36 but even if he bangs and I capt him there wont be much damage.

Chelsea dgw not a cert and requires a few events for it to be a possibility.

      So, its TC.

Sane over Aguero as he has better form and imo even if Mendy returns he'll play in both.
Finally, check out Ars Eve chances conceded on the right over the last 4. 14 and 15, near the highest Fulham 19 anc consider Arsenal will have a patched up defence and Everton defence has leaked goals all season.

Exactly. Im working with information we know and choosing to play it in gw where theres a guaranteed advantage over holding in the hope that one comes up in the remainder of the season.

Understand your point about starting one game, my point was more he'll cause merry hell against both teams even if minutes restricted.

That’s enough for me to captain Sané - was on him anyway - but TC... Im not sure. I think we will have a DGW down the line in which one or two good players will be more nailed on to start both games.

But your reasoning is sound so I you feel it go for it, by all means!

Yes we will have other DGW but like Mr G_Zod there are other chips to play.

              Likely DGW:
              32
              35

              Therefore chips + WC:
              32 - FH
              34 - WC
              35 - BB

If not playing this week would have to play SGW TC. I take it there could be good picks for this, like Salah v Hud 36 but title race could be over by then.

Too clarify, presume you intend to BB 35.

I agree with this post and it's why I'm going with TC this week on a City asset.

Didn't work for me last year so I can concede an argument that should be played another SGW but don't get the view that a 4th DGW will appear in the calendar after the results of the last round of the FA Cup.

Yes, Pal. I will BB in 35.

We have the same view on the 4th dgw, its only hypothetical. I think if anything a triple could happen in 32 but it would be v. unlikely and if it did FH with a triple up beats TC.

This week seems best and its guaranteed.

            Interesting thread here;
            https://twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1091427578114646016

Seems there could theoretically be another DGW but not guaranteed + clubs could have little to play for then and be focusing on the cups.

I'm not confident but best of a bad bunch of options.

I have Sane + Sterling, thinking of going for Sane. Who would you go for from them 2? Who are you going to put the TC armband on?

TC on Sane for me out of Sane and Aguero.

If I were you I'd probably do the same. There good reasons for any out of Sane, Sterling, Aguero.

While Sane shades it Sterling is owned by less so if he outscored Sane you'd be well up.

Ill take a look at the link. Cheers.

I'm going Salah (c) - I think i will probably be going cityless in attack (Have Ederson & Richarlison)

It could come back to bite me... but I'm not 100% convinced by City - they had an outstanding first third of the season, but haven't been as productive in the second third - there is always a case for and against though:

      The case against:

      Man City GW1 - 13 = 3.15 goals per game (13 games played, 41 goals scored, 0 defeats, 5 games scoring 4 or more)
Man City GW14 - 24 = 2.10 goals per game (11 games played 23 goals scored, 4 defeats, zero games scoring 4 or more)

      Sterling:
      - 102 points scored in first 14 gameweeks
      - 41 points in last 10 gameweeks

      Sane:
      - 5 blanks in last 9 gameweeks (averaging worse than a blank every 2 games of late)

      Pep:
      - Possibility of rest, rotation and/or truncated minutes

      The Case For:
      - They are a really, really, really good attacking team, against two less than stellar defences in one gameweek

      It should be interesting!

"averaging worse than a blank every 2 games of late"

Yet has returned in 3 of the last 4, averaging 8pts per game over that period. That's better than Salah, Pogba, Auba, Aguero, in fact is there a better scorer over the last 4?

Yes in that range James Ward Prowse has outscored him (last 4 games). Salah has matched him or take a point or two, in the same range, but crucially doesn’t have the string of blanks leading back beyond then. But I’m not saying Sane won’t do well - he could do very well.

But he does have 5 blanks in the last 9 - which rarely gets raised - hopefully for his owners, his captainers, and his triple captainers he doesn’t get any more blanks or get rested/rotated/limited minutes in the DGW.

Btw the range 9 GW's rarely gets raised as it goes back almost 2 months. A player could have had 2 separate pockets of form and a dip in between easily in that time. The last 4 weeks are WAY more pertinent than the last 9, which is just desperation.

OK I agree Sane had a fairly average couple of games in December so that's bound to have a major impact on his performances in Feb.

And how about 3 days ago’s performance - Also irrelevant? That’s 4 blanks in his last 7 GW’s

He selected the range of 9 GWs because it is the range that looks worst for Sane.
It starts with City's dip in form from GW16-19 when they lost 3 games out of 4.

He has been a regular starter from GW5 onwards.
GW5-17: Apart from 1 match when he didn't play (against Spurs) and 3 where he played less than 60 minutes (against Liverpool, United and Chelsea), he had attacking returns in all of the other 9 (including 2 assists against Everton in GW17).
GW18-20: He blanked in all of these 3 matches, although in GW20 he only played for 6 minutes.
GW21-23: Attacking returns in all 3 (including a goal against Liverpool).
GW24: An unexpected blank against Newcastle.

GW16-19: City lost to Chelsea in GW16, beat Everton in GW17, and were without Fernandinho in GW18-19.

“He selected the range of 9 GWs because it is the range that looks worst for Sane.”

No he did not - the range that looks worst for Sané is the last 7 GW’s - 4 blanks in 7 is a worse than 5 blanks in 9.

As I said above, Sané could do well, and as I said above, we shouldn’t brush his blanks under the carpet either.

    2FTs 0 in the bank

Hazard, F.Anderson, Alonso 》 Sane, De Bruyne, Bednarek (-4pts)

    and pocket the 1.1m.

    Leaves me with this:

    Fabianski
    Robertson Doherty Bednarek
    Salah Sanè(C) KDB Pogba Richarlison
    Rashford Jimènez

    Hart / Deeney / Bennett / Digne*

    Thoughts?

Is Aubameyang to Aguero worth it as a straight swap?

I only brought Aubameyang in last week, supposedly for five weeks and chose him over Aguero so I didn't have to waste a transfer for the blank game week. The likely changes in prices mean that I could trade back for a profit later. I see the double game week and think what could be. Am I being greedy?
