How Guardiola’s tactical changes caused a Double Gameweek divide

The first of Manchester City’s two Gameweek 25 fixtures brought wildly mixed results for those who backed the defending champions’ three most-owned attacking Fantasy assets.

While Raheem Sterling and – especially – Sergio Aguero‘s owners basked in their players’ double-digit hauls, those who invested in Leroy Sane were to be left disgruntled as the German winger remained an unused substitute and missed out on the points bonanza in City’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

We’ll round up the usual talking points, manager quotes and injury updates as we reflect on an afternoon that caused as much anguish as it did satisfaction in the Fantasy community.

Manchester City 3-1 Arsenal

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) x3 | Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m)
  • Assists: Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m), Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) x2 | Nacho Monreal (£5.4m)

Pep Guardiola has a long-standing reputation as the Fantasy manager’s nemesis, be it his ambiguous injury round-ups in pre-match press conferences or his predilection for a surprise rotation.

This Double Gameweek always had to the potential to be a groin-kick for those with City assets, lying as it does in the middle of four Premier League fixtures in the space of 13 days.

Wednesday night’s trip to Goodison Park may prove to be just as infuriating for owners of Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) but Guardiola chose Sunday as the day to remove Leroy Sane (£9.8m) from the City attack and experiment with his formation, the Germany international not even setting foot onto the pitch as a substitute and leaving his Fantasy backers yearning for either a monster haul against the Toffees or perhaps another no-show for those who handed him the armband and have a high-scoring vice-captain.

The hindsight brigade will, of course, be out in force. Was Sane’s middling performance and early substitution against Newcastle on Wednesday an indication that he was to be dropped for this encounter? Sterling was, after all, arguably just an ineffectual on Tyneside but stayed on for the full 90 minutes.

The second instalment in the Gameweek 25 saga will provide us with a further narrative: either Guardiola has had one of his biannual losses of faith in Sane or, quite simply, he was keeping him fresh for the midweek trip to Merseyside amid the congested fixture schedule.

Coming into Sunday’s match, the German wide-man had started more Premier League matches than any other City midfielder since Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) picked up a knee injury in Gameweek 12.

Even Sterling and Aguero had suffered two benchings apiece to Sane’s one in the preceding 12 Gameweeks before this “double”, with the left-winger arguably City’s most consistent player in attack during those three months.

Mendy’s imminent return was always seen as a threat to Sane’s future minutes but the French left-back was still missing from the match-day squad for Sunday’s encounter at the Etihad, so that had no bearing on this particular selection decision.

There is, of course, nothing to be done about it now (at least, not in FPL).

We could just as easily be sat here on Thursday morning writing about an Aguero one-pointer or a Sterling no-show (though their respective banked hauls would soften the blow), trying to rationalise both Guardiola’s decisions and our own as Fantasy managers in the inevitable autopsy.

With Pep and his charges, we are buying into a free-scoring side that is high-risk, high-reward – especially where Double Gameweek captaincy (or triple captaincy) is concerned.

To the game itself and Guardiola’s teamsheet raised eyebrows upon its release an hour before kick-off – and not just for Sane’s benching.

Going into the match without a recognised left-back – Danilo‘s (£5.1m) owners also the victims of Guardiola’s tinkering – City took to the field in a formation that was effectively 4-1-4-1 without the ball and an ambitious 3-2-4-1 with it.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m) was the de facto left-back in the back four, with Fernandinho (£5.3m) joining Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m) at centre-half.

Fernandinho then moved alongside Ilkay Gundogan (£5.4m) in the double-pivot when City gained possession, with Laporte forming a back three with Otamendi and Kyle Walker (£6.4m).

Sterling (on the left) and Bernardo Silva (£7.5m) provided the width either side of attacking midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) and David Silva (£8.5m), with Aguero ploughing a lone furrow up front.

Fernandinho said of the system:

If they [Arsenal] play 4-4-2 we defend, and when I have the ball I go to the middle, join Gundo but without the ball, I join the back four.

I think it worked today. Playing back there you have the whole vision of the pitch and going to the middle I know what I have to do because it’s the same position I’ve played all season.

Of course, I’m happy to help my teammates win an important game.

With the overall match stats showing 17 shots to four in City’s favour, the formation change looked to have been a success.

Apart from a blistering first ten minutes in which Aguero nodded in Laporte’s cross and City steamrollered the Gunners, however, the first half was much closer than the end result and shot count suggested.

From the moment Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) glanced in a Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) flick-on from a corner in Arsenal’s first attack of the match, Unai Emery’s side gave as good as they got – at least until half-time.

Playing in what resembled a 4-4-2, with Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m) deployed out of position on the left wing, the Gunners wrestled control of the game, with Lucas Torreira (£4.4m) and especially Matteo Guendouzi (£4.8m) excellent in dominating the City midfield.

Ederson had to rush out to deny Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.2m) what would have been a clear goalscoring opportunity before Kolasinac and Torreira saw their shots saved and blocked in the same move as City wobbled.

The hosts’ second goal, scored just before half-time, almost came against the run of play but it was a vintage City strike: Sterling running onto a chipped Gundogan pass behind the Arsenal defence to square the ball for Aguero to tap in.

City’s third arrived in similar circumstances (with a suggestion of handball on Aguero’s part), with the goal all of Sterling’s making down the left flank.

That all three of City’s goals came from Arsenal’s right-back position would have been even more galling for Sane and Danilo’s owners, with 35-year-old defender Stephan Lichtsteiner (£4.5m) looking every inch the veteran full-back as he struggled against Sterling’s pace and guile.

The second half was at odds with the first with City completely dominant and not allowing their visitors a single shot on goal.

Bernd Leno (£4.8m) repelled three De Bruyne shots before producing a fine stop to keep out a deflected Aguero effort, going on to rack up three save points and one bonus point as City twisted the knife.

The likes of De Bruyne, Silva and Bernardo were some way short of their best, particularly in the first half, but City have made a habit of dismantling sides recently (Newcastle apart) without getting out of second gear.

We wrote in our write-ups of the recent victories over Wolves and Huddersfield that City looked disjointed at times but, as they did against Arsenal on Sunday, Guardiola’s troops still managed to put three goals past their opponents on both occasions.

For us Fantasy managers with City assets in our squads, that ability to plunder goals regardless of performance is what keeps us coming back for more.

Guardiola paid tribute to the hat-trick hero after full-time:

From the beginning, I was very pleased. In the first season, people said I didn’t like him but always I was delighted.

I am honest, sometimes I played Gabriel or Raheem as striker. Today he fought and did everything for the team.

I judge the intention. The intention from Sergio was always perfect since we’ve been together.

For those who pay heed to managed game-time and the omens for the following match, Aguero was sacrificed on 80 minutes as Sterling completed his seventh straight Premier League game, while De Bruyne gingerly walked off with what seemed only to be cramp in the closing stages – though that in itself suggests he is still a little short of full match-fitness after his recent comeback from injury.

For all Arsenal’s admirable ambition, the fact that Aubameyang and Lacazette didn’t register a single shot in the box between them highlighted the difference in class between the two clubs.

Emery shared his thoughts on the match:

They showed their superiority today over 90 minutes. Above all, the second half cost us.

In the first half, we can look at it with some optimism but in the second half, we tried to do something different to go up against them by creating more chances, more opportunities, with more players and possibilities on the pitch. We were more open than we were in the first half and they have very fast players in the transition.

I’m very happy with Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira’s performances today, but they also need time to improve and to take confidence, to take experience for their future here. With the result, it’s not easy to say that, but there are some positives that we can look at from our players today.

Today, we lost but are looking to improve. It’s normal because they showed their superiority and now we continue working. The next match for us is very important against Huddersfield. These are the matches where we can take the regularity to be in the position we want, near to the top four.

Emery also gave an update on Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m), who was substituted in the second half:

I think he’s okay also. He’s been having problems all this week and last week.

I think last week he is with some problems also [with] his head and today, when in the last 20 minutes he was also with some problems, I decided to give Mavropanos 20 minutes. I hope it is not a problem with Mustafi for this week and the next match.

Denis Suarez (£6.5m) made his Gunners debut off the bench midway through the second half, meanwhile.

Manchester City XI (4-1-4-1): Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Laporte, Fernandinho; Gundogan; Bernardo Silva, De Bruyne (Mahrez 88′), Silva, Sterling; Aguero (Gabriel Jesus 81′).

Arsenal XI (4-4-2): Leno; Monreal, Mustafi, Koscielny, Lichtsteiner; Kolasinac (Denis Suarez 66′ ), Torreira, Guendouzi, Iwobi (Ramsey 66′); Aubameyang, Lacazette.

    Good day able forum.

Is Sane (CHE, blank) to Mane (BOU, mun) worth -4? I'm concerned about Sanes minutes now that they played so well without him, and I don't have a decent sub coming in. I'll hold untill after the Everton match of course if price changes allow it but I only have 0,1 to spare.

      Difficult one.
I'd try and hold off making a decision until after the next GW, so play Sane against Chelsea, and then look at it again before the blank, injuries/suspensions could force other moves/extra hits.

All City attackers are pretty interchangeable, and no one is safe.

You will see just as much argument that Sane is now rested and refreshed ready to start against Everton, as people speculating that he's been dropped, and Mendy coming back means he won't play again this season.

Unfortunately the truth lies somewhere in the middle, and only one man knows.

No, why would it? Two great FPL assets with good fixtures. They could always blank but I don't see them as a trap . A trap to me is more like bringing in someone like Ross Barkley after a few goals.

Just devil's advocate but Arsenal away form is poor...Hudd still getting used to their new manager and may be revved up for the home fans...Spurs still looking fairly toothless, a VERY narrow win over Newcastle and Son was lucky with his shot which was straight at the goalkeeper. LEI also quite resilient and a decent record against the top teams.

Aight, you ain't wrong. Still, Huddersfield has to be considered as good a fixture as it gets this season. Lei has a decent defense, just like Newcastle, but Son is excellent value.

Both London teams need a comfortable win. Why not? HUD seem very weak atm and already planning next year. LEI are difficult to defeat but Son seems to find the way this year whenever there is need. Dont know if both produce but with blanks ahead for MCI and CHE they both seem good choices until we find out DGWs schedule.

Arsenal have conceded 36 goals so far this season. For context, that's more than Leicester, Wolves, Palace and Newcastle and about par with Everton, Man Utd and West Ham. I don't know if I would want a defender from these teams, despite his obvious attacking threat. I can't see him matching Doherty for example, and maybe not even AWB.

As for City attacker, I've only kept Sane and I am considering shipping him. There are some other nailed on attackers that I like more (Auba, Rashford, Pogba, Son, Salah, to name a few).

waiting til after everton-city plays is as good advice as any, and could also provide info/injury that solves your issues. With that team i would be tempted to just save but i can see why you want Son and Auba. Kind of having the same conundrum and my sentiments are that i´m more willing to loose Sané than Kun, but at the same time Auba tempts me more than Son because of the fixture. Leicester is so unpredictable and tends to do well defensively vs top teams. City have great fixtures after 27 so Kun might be worth keeping. Imo Spurs fixtures is difficult to predict in terms of easy/tough because the teams they´re up against is so on and off, Leicester and Bunrley looks nice on paper but if they just shut the door Spurs will struggle to unlock them, Chelsea and Arsenal capable of doing 4-0 wins but also 0-4 losses. I might go Son after all, since he is one of the 8-9midfielders in 27 that has a game and i don´t want pogba vs liverpool and uniteds fixture turn for the worse and really tightens up and we saw that when OGS needs to rotate they´re reduced quite a bit.

I’d consider whether you want to keep on holding both Pog and Rashford from 27 onwards. There’s a fairly major fixture turn.

I’m keeping an eye on Arnie for 27 on. That limits the exposure to the United Liverpool game and he has plum fixtures and if he stays fit could be a real asset in 31.

I’m also considering Chilwell for Leicester cover.

Is Sane/Hazard to Son worth (-4)?

    Have 2 FTs.
Plan to do Sane/Hazard & Kamara to Auba & Puncheon for free.

Thinking if I should get Son for -4 also?
And if not who would you keep out of Haz/Sane?

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

I can understand it - if I were a Sane owner, and especially captainer, I would feel pretty downbeat. He now needs either a double digit haul or a benching and stressful wait that he stays on the bench. Pretty nerve-racking situation.

Aguero has been a success already because of the hat-trick, even if he only adds 1 point, or even 0.

It's Sterling only that could go either way - a start and a goal or assist and it's a success, a benching and blank and it would be a solid but underwhelming pick.

I'd call that a borderline success.

            1-5: Fail
            6-10: Below Par
            11-15: Acceptable
            16-20: Decent
            20+: Jackpot.

Yeah I'd go with that as a guideline for top players during a DGW. I'd probably call 16-20 'good' rather than 'decent' but that's nit-picking.

It's in relative terms that Aguero has already been a success - as it's unlikely that anyone else apart from Sterling can match his score this GW. (not impossible of course, but not very likely)

Well, to play devil's advocate, not exactly. Kane had one attacking return in a popular DGW last season and ended up on a very underwhelming 3x8 as a TC.

With West Ham, Liverpool, Everton, and Man City still to play this GW, is it risky to make an early transfer?

Son already has 125,000+ transfers in and Jimenez is nearing 75,000. Will you be looking to avoid an early transfer in case of injury, or to see how your players perform?

Son and Jimenez have risen this week already - is it worth moving to protect team value, even if you have more than enough to do it after price changes?

For those who have moved already, what was your reasoning? Were you forced into the move by having exactly the necessary funds?

    1. Bunk Moreland

Even with a TV of 'only' 106.0 I don't seem to be struggling with funds - it seems to be a nice season for easy distribution of the money.

In fact it could even benefit me to wait: if Aguero rises another +0.1 and Auba drops -0.1, that'll be a nice little bonus swing.

      1. Eze Really?

If the players have played why does it matter?
If you already know you are off loading a City asset it makes no difference how many points they score on Wednesday and training injuries aren't that common.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years

Because other players might get injured. Say you did Sane to Son for example, only for Salah then to get injured.

This is a good answer, my only counter would be that in my specific case Aguero to Auba would be worth a -4 so I would do it now if it wasn't for the amount of people doing the reverse which might influence prices for me.

Yeah fair enough. Personally I have 1 FT and don't plan to take a hit. I want to do Hazard to Son but I decided to let Son rise until Wednesday at least. Maybe Salah gets injured tonight, in which case I do Salah to Son, or maybe Aguero gets injured on Wednesday, in which case I do Aguero to Lacazette/Aubameyang.

Rashford is rising, so I might have to move Ings for him sooner rather than later. Other than that, worth waiting.

(Also - don't forget Brighton havw a midweek game too!)

You forget that Wolves and Brighton also have FA Cup replays this GW.

I am holding off hoping Auba drops in price again. Then I'll get Auba in later this GW (barring injury) after the FA Cup replays and Man City game are over.

I made the one transfer in GW 25 Pogba > Son with the plan to save an FT going into GW 27.
I couldn't allow myself to have triple Liverpool and Man Utd against each other.
2 FTs going into GW 27 could be beneficial as many hits will be taken no doubts. Firmino will become Vardy as I think Tielemans could add a real spark to Leicester. My advice would be to try and save the FT but I can see why Son is making it difficult for some

That Liv-Utd fixture is the main reason I haven't decided in my transfers yet. Benching Sterling for the blank and having 5 players in that game after bringing in Mane could prove fatal, especially with everyone else planning to buy Auba for the good fixtures.

Was always moving one of Hazard/Sane to Son so decision was made easy. Can see Sane starting against Everton and then missing out again at Chelsea. His minutes against the top teams are minimal this season. Have another transfer incase of any injuries.

I also noticed Sane's minimal minutes against the top teams, but not till late on Friday evening.
Unfortunately I didn't then adjust my plan and get Sterling or Aguero for the double game-week instead of Sane; a few minutes after making this transfer I realised that I might have made a bad mistake. 🙁

Saving FT - we will know the full GW31 line-up before GW27. Don't really want to remove anyone potentially playing GW31, no matter how small a chance the laminated spreadsheet says there is.

I did Sane to Son. Yes, Son may get a serious injury before press conference and that would hurt. Yet, it is more likely that I would later be .1 priced out of unknown transfer.

I can see Hazard and Higuain start to perform and Kane coming back. Too early to say that tv has zero importance.

Kun might get an injury, easy switch to Auba for -4 which I may do anyway. Salah injury I could handle next week, he wouldn't double drop this week anyway. Any other injury I would deal next week anyway and do Sane to Son.

So basicly Son illness or injury before friday(?) is the only real

Rich > Son for the price swing

Save the other FT incase of any drastic injury news from pressers/midweek matches that mean I can't field a full 11, but also gives me 2 FT's going into GW27 when we know the GW31 schedule.

My plan is either Aguero>Aubameyang or Sane>Son, but which will depend on who plays on Wednesday (and other developments). I'm also conscious that I only have 4 players with a guaranteed fixture in GW31, so I will await FA Cup 5th Round results before doing anything else.

I made three transfers last night for various reasons.

      1. Planned them ahead of the gameweek.
      2. Price change pressure.
      3. Everyone coming in has already played.

Moves were Richarlison, Deeney (short term punt, don't ask), Patricio => Son, Jimenez, Boruc (had too many Wolves & helped with monies)

Doesn't feel like much of a risk. I love this stage of the game the most, the weeks before the big DGWs and blanks when you have to scramble a bit more - so felt good to bring in three players I'm happy with longer term. Did similar move for this GW and has worked out v well so far.

Allways risky to move several days before deadline. If you're not in the position where you'll end up being priced out, you should wait. If the player you're getting in is only slightly better than the one your letting go, you should consider saving FT. The cupgames and the Draw will surely have an impact on the strategy for the rest of the season, so extra FT might come in handy.

Moved Hazard to Son to catch the rise & better fixtures and due to MCI and blank coming up for Haz, so think his price will soon dip. Either Hazard or Higuain on the watchlist from 28 onwards, if they perform in the intervening matches.

I transferred Aguero+Richarlison to Aubamayeng+Son for free on Sunday night. I tend to make early transfers only when value is concerned AND I had already planned them the week before. The rule of planning them previously means you're less susceptible to kneejerk responses to gameweeks, and emotional reactions to a player blanking.
In this instance I had only had the exact funds so I moved early with Son rising on Sunday night.

      I did Sterling/Kamara > Son/Jimmi -4.

Essentially I’m only losing 1 player and I’ve enough of a bench to cope and I didn’t want to lose 0.2.
Risk/reward is a factor in this game, ask anyone who has won it before. Playing safe all the time will never win FPL.
