Selection headache for Hodgson as Batshuayi turns FPL heads

Fantasy Premier League managers will have to monitor the forward situation at Crystal Palace amid recent changes to the side.

There are a host of budget options available but Roy Hodgson has some decisions to make about his formation in the coming weeks.

Their win over Fulham on Saturday is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Crystal Palace 2-0 Fulham

Goals: Luka Milivojevic (£6.2m), Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m)

Assists: Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m)

Crystal Palace manager Hodgson has a selection headache on his hands ahead of Gameweek 26, as it is still unclear for Fantasy managers how Michy Batshuayi (£6.5m) fits in at Selhurst Park. The Chelsea striker, who joined the Eagles on loan on transfer deadline day, grabbed himself an assist in his eight-minute debut and certainly showed some promise in his short space of time on the field.

Whether he will be in line to start against West Ham on Saturday remains to be seen though, as Hodgson has serious competition for places in his attacking line now. In Wilfried Zaha‘s (£6.7m) absence, the Palace boss reverted to the 4-4-2 formation he used at the start of the season, having favoured 4-3-3 in recent weeks. A switch back to 4-3-3 would leave just one space for a centre-forward with Zaha and Andros Townsend (£5.9m) likely to take up the wide positions.

Leading from the front against Fulham was an attacking pairing of Christian Benteke (£6.3m) and Jordan Ayew (£5.7m), both of whom played well and earned praise from their manager at the full-time whistle. It was the first start for Benteke since Gameweek 4, as he continues his recovery from a long lay-off. According to Hodgson, the former Aston Villa man still has issues playing the full 90 minutes, although it should be to his credit that there were boos from the home support when he was substituted in the 72nd minute.

“Christian, of course, (did well) coming back from a long layoff. At half-time he was complaining about the onset of cramp, we knew we couldn’t play him for 90 minutes, we knew that we would have to take him off at some time. But the good thing is of course now when you have Batshuayi on the bench and when you have Bakary Sako on the bench you’re not frightened to take him off because you’ve got such a good alternative.” – Roy Hodgson

It was Ayew who Batshuayi came on for in the 82nd minute, but whether he replaces the former Swansea man may also hang in the balance currently. Even though he did not score or assist, Hodgson described Ayew’s performance as his best of the season, having started each of the last five in a row for Palace.

“For Ayew on an all-round performance, it was his best performance. His work rate and efforts in the game at Southampton in midweek was fantastic, today again you see the man has super-human powers in terms of the effort he puts in. Today I thought he succeeded with the ball as well.” – Roy Hodgson

With the nature of Batshuayi’s arrival as a marquee signing at Palace, it is fairly likely that he will start matches very soon. It cannot be ignored that the Belgian international looked fired up as soon as he took to the Selhurst Park pitch, and in just eight minutes on the pitch managed two shots and a one assist. With future Palace team-sheets harder to predict now, questions have been asked to current players about whether the group of forwards can play together.

“Of course we can play together. But now it is up to the manager. Like I say he has got a lot of options, so it is up to him. He is a goal scorer, he is a player who is always going to be dangerous in the box – which is good. We have got a lot of different options, which I think for the manager is going to be a headache for him.” – Christian Benteke

An often overlooked individual at Crystal Palace is second half goalscorer and FPL defender Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.4m), who netted for the second time against Fulham this season. With Zaha out of the team, the former Leicester man was making his first start since Gameweek 20 at left attacking midfield, having featured as a substitute three times between then and the visit of Fulham. No player had more shots in the penalty box at Selhurst Park on Saturday as he continues to prove he has the potential to be a powerful Fantasy asset if he was able to start regularly. In fact, Schlupp actually has goals in two of his last three starts, also netting in the spectacular 3-2 win at Manchester City in Gameweek 18. Unfortunately for him, his area of the pitch is where the most competition for places are with Zaha and Max Meyer (£5.6m) in the mix, as well as any striker pushed out wide.

“I’ve always believed in Jeffrey Schlupp. I believe in him as a left-back, I believe in him as a left-sided player and I believe in him as a left midfield player in a three because he has a lot of qualities and it’s great if you’re going to write something positive about him because it certainly backs up what we feel about him and he’s been a little hard done by. Funnily enough in the area that he plays that’s where the competition has been strongest.” – Roy Hodgson

After surviving a first-half Fulham onslaught, there was a ninth clean sheet of the season for Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m) and his Crystal Palace defensive colleagues. It was further proof that the Eagles assets in our Fantasy squads should be trusted more often than not when they are playing at home. In their last four league matches at Selhurst Park they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just once, in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in Gameweek 20.

“I wasn’t surprised that the first-half was a difficult one for us, we didn’t pass the ball anywhere near as well as we’re capable of in the first-half. But we got a break, a piece of good fortune, the cross was a good cross but I didn’t expect Christie to handle it to give us that penalty, but these things to happen in the game of football. Certainly, in the second half, I thought we played much better. I thought our control was better, our passing started to come back to its normal levels. We piled a bit of pressure on them, not least of all from corner kicks which we were taking.” – Roy Hodgson

Unfortunately for Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) owners, Fulham were unable to attack Palace with the same ruthlessness they did against Brighton midweek. Despite finding such success playing balls into the middle for Mitrović to thrive on in Gameweek 24, Saturday’s trip to Selhurst saw none of that width in attack. The injured André Schürrle (£5.6m) was replaced not by a natural wide player, but by central midfielder Tom Cairney (£4.6m), who clearly was not suited to the role.

“No, no, no, we continued to play and try to do our game but of course we made a few crosses for Mitrovic and we know Mitrovic is very dangerous when you pass the ball well and cross for him. I ask always to make a cross for him but it’s not possible sometimes and we want to go back and pass the ball behind and restart the action when you can finish and cross. If Mitrovic is ready, he can score.” – Claudio Ranieri

There were other tactical changes that seemed to hinder Fulham, as they reverted to a three-man defence with wing-backs pushing on despite the success they had with a back-four for the second half against Brighton. After going 1-0 down to Luka Milivojevic‘s (£6.2m) penalty, Claudio Ranieri was forced to ditch the back-three once again. Luciano Vietto (£5.3m) was introduced for Tim Ream (£4.2m) at half-time as part of the latest reshuffle.

“I played three at the back and we played better than the second half. I changed to try help my players at Brighton, that was good, but today wasn’t and that’s it.” – Claudio Ranieri

It was an afternoon to forget for Cyrus Christie (£4.2m) as he gave away the penalty in the first half and was forced from the pitch with an injury in the second.

“He was injured, I don’t know (the latest). Tomorrow we will check and on Monday we will know better.” – Claudio Ranieri

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Sakho, Tomkins, Wan-Bissaka; Schlupp (Sako 90+1′), Milivojevic, McArthur, Townsend; Benteke (Meyer 72′), Ayew (Batshuayi 82′).

Fulham XI (3-4-3): Rico; Ream (Vietto 45′), Le Marchand, Odoi; Bryan, Seri, Chambers, Christie (Fosu-Mensah 62′); Babel (Ayité 88′), Mitrović, Cairney.

      Yes mate.

On 39, excluding a Doherty 5 pointer coming in for TAA (44).

Sane Captain and Richarlison left to play.

Any chance I’ll still be in LMS come Wednesday night?

I am. Sterling and Sane (TC) left. on 40 points currently.

Definitely thought that LMS will not be an issue this week but obviously I was.

Still thing that I should go trough. Only 1 assist from Sane should be enough. Or no show (lets hope).

I don't understand why you would captain Salah when you had Sane? Just can't fathom those who didn't put it on a City player... it's basic probability. 2 (potential) GW better than 1. And way more fun too.

Hmm... worrying signs. Thanks mate. Hopefully TAA looking likely to return should help them at the back, and hopefully Lovren back soon too.

As for midfield, Keita needs to be dropped (liability) and they really need Wiji back.

At the back Gomez is being sorely missed, I don't Matip at all and VVD can't do it all himself. Milner isn't good enough cover don't know how we let clyne go! Keita is a headless chicken currently. Wij Fab and Milner would be my midfield three, the ox would be a Well needed creative threat that Salah and co need. Sorry for ranting I'm a pool fan haha

Shows that football is a complex thing. TAA is important for the team as he is fast, creative and bundles of energy down the right side. Henderson, who everyone seems to dislike, is also important in the team, his tactical awareness and recycling of the ball is much better than most, keeps them ticking. Matip is a decent centerback but he lacks a vital component and that is how to defend in line, his awareness on set pieces are awful. Gomez out for awhile and is a miss, Lovren gives better security than Matip. Hopefully this is the on blip of form in the season for them, 2 draws is not the worst if that´s the case.

Bobby was absent. No idea why Salah was absent too. Had a couple of runs into the box in the 2nd half but came to nothing. Mane had a few poaching chances, but didn't do a right lot else.
Keita was woeful in MID and Defence was noticeably missing, which is why pool didn't have a lot of chances.
Anderson was outstanding and Chicarito started well, so WHU put Pool on the back foot a lot.

Robbo was his usual fine self down the left, but mostly came to nowt.

I only have Salah from Pool and won't get any more til TAA fit again. Only because I can't afford Robbo.

Yeah wait...as a Salah, Robbo, Allison owner here. Klopp will surely be working on defending set pieces after that match. That was their main downfall against WH, although they gave away many passes in the final third against a bus of 10 players back.

          No worries
          2015-16 season 200k.
I used to take hits every gw before this season. 100 transfer's every season. Weekly glory only.
Joining this community this year have just informed me about the price of FT.
Also never ever looked @ ownership. Now I'm realizing that it's the most important thing in FPL. 😮
          Relative scoring and all.
Was doing great this season 129k around November but Sane+Sterling combo over Salah+Son in December completely ruined my season.
          Got down to 650k.
          Now climbing up slowly again.
Climbing upto 350k before this gw & took risk by TC sane & rest you know 😀
Will have to climb back again.
Most disgusting thing is that I've lost my 100 points lead over December & now 66 points negative.

Greece but i live in the USA.. A friend found out FPL on 2015 and we started playing very casually... I didn't even know how team value works and i didn't even bother to find out..
At the end of the season i was so furious about coming second on our ML that i decided to understand the mechanics of the game.
I can say i am a real FPL junkie now, much more fun when i played casually.

      From India.
I am relatively new in this game ,started from 2015/16 season.I watched football earlier too but just as a casual timekiller type ,but one of my friends in college challenged us to beat him ( believe me I am poor in this game and he was worst) and from that day my fpl journey started.
But took this game seriously this season for the first time and was going good at 12k but messed up around mid December and I'm still free falling in rank .
Always after a bad week or season I wish to quit but you know it's an addiction and I'm always here the next season hoping to better the previous score.

      India

This is my 10th season 😮
Playing football for my school team and one of the senior member of the team introduced me to fpl. Asked my elder brother about it and he was already a season old .

Started as a casual, didn't even complete the season in my first season, but since then been playing the game till the end and each year have the same excitement.

Last 6 years I have been playing the game pretty seriously . Also it's fun to beat your elder brother every year 😀

Hahaha . It's fun having the bragging rights at the end of the season. He has won like twice , one was my first ever season.

He's an Arsenal fan , and me being a Manchester United fan , that's cherry on the cake .

The best part of him being an Arsenal fan? We watch matches together. And what better than celebrating United's win in front of your brother ?

I remember when we hammered arsenal 8-2, I stopped celebrating after 5 goals out of sympathy 😀 i was like he is my elder brother , and i can't keep dancing after every goal we score.
Even though I did tell him that it isn't late to switch to Manchester United fan 😉

Ireland, but living in China the past six years. Been a football fanatic since a kid, played FPL casually at first when I came across it but ended up having a lot of free time from 2016 onwards, found this site, became a fanatic and finished top 5k in my first season taking it seriously. Can also relate to DDFC, used to love my gambling but don't miss it at all now since living out here, FPL fills a bit of a void in that regard I guess.

Have a mate who switched Ireland for China and loves it! What's football culture like over there? You'd never really think of large nations like China, the US or India caring much for it (pardon my ignorance)

Basketball is the number one over here but Football is hugely popular too with most fans following a team in England or abroad. I'm sure you're well aware of what is happening in the Super league over here, throwing money at it, with Hamsik being the latest who looks like coming here for a big money move. The league is still of a very poor standard and grass roots is almost non-existent! Most kids have no free time to play sports, let alone get serious about football, with such pressure/competition on getting into a good school, etc. This pressure starts from Kindergarten. Kind of sad really.

Throwing money at aging players ain't exactly a boom in my opinion. That's actually quite depressing sounds very authoritarian. Lack of grass roots is a similar theme back home, the FAI don't give a toss about our youths

Yup, have little to no interest in the CSL myself. Can understand why there is no real grass roots development over here but Ireland has no real excuse, should be far better.

            Yeah, thats true.

Talent is available, just need some more attention from government and players need to improve their stamina and strength.

Lack of motivation could be a factor when the players look at treatment cricket players are receiving...

Cricket is huge in India and it overshadows every other sport here ,that's one of the reasons why we are week in football.

The pay structure, fame, training facilities ,grassroot development everything is better for cricket than other sports...hence I feel it's time to develop football with a good amount of people taking interest in it here...strike it when it's hot ! 😉

I got hooked on epl in 2006 when I played in a two-week summer 'soccer' tournament in Longfield Kent. The family that housed me were United fans. In 2011 my friends started a fantasy epl league on ESPN. I lost since i didn't realize it had a transfer limit. So I vowed to never lose to my friends again.

The Premier league is simply the most fascinating league in the world, I started watching the PL in 2004 when the Arsenal vs Manchester United rivalry was what you live for, NEVER forgetting the Roy Keane/ Patrick Vieira outburst in the small Highbury tunnel and on the pitch. I also loved Mourinho's winning machines in 05 with players like Kezman, Robben,Frank, Damien Duff, Eidur etc. who became the evil men against Rijkaards Barcelona in a 4-2 Cl encounter. I still have a nostalgia feeling about the old premier league intro song which I also loved listening to before kick off.

I started playing Fpl in 2014 during a training session at Heerenven, it's been a love story ever since then. I feel like I am married to the game.

Yeah buddy. Those moments were insane, like before kick off and Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira already doing their battle in the tunnel. You kinda know the type of match you are going to get that day.

Nowadays, players smile and shake in the tunnel way too often.

Stanislas or Fraser for the bgw's?

            Considering doing Kamara + Haz + Sane -> Auba + Son + Fraser -4

Auba will play at least in bgw33 and Son will likely Play two. Can always bench them in 31, FH32 etc.

            Whatcha think DZ?

I had the captaincy on Hazard until Friday night.. I then decide that i need more city players to make the gameweek more interesting.. I wanted to do Brooks--->Hazard and Mitrovic--->Aguero(C).. But i was priced out for a 0.1..
I had to take a -4 so i decided it wasn't worth it..So i did Digne--->Bednarek and Hazard--->Sterling and put the armband on Sane.. Of course i forgot (vc) on Salah.
After thinking about it for an hour i decided to bench Bednarek because i thought Mitrovic had better chances against Crystal Palace.. Of course Anderson on the bench too.
I can now see a 15mins cameo for Sane..
Every time that i have the opportunity to get it right to reach top1k i make a wrong decision..it seems it is not meant for me.

Need to loose 2 ideally 3 from the 4 below for 27 since Schindler and Puncheon offer next to no potential on my bench.

Who gets a reprieve in GW26 from Digne, Sane, Richarlison and Aguero?

Thinking Sane out myself. Straight swap for Son

These have (wat, blank, car) not horrific but both home teams could grind a clean sheer out.

I just feel it's a no brainer to swap the like of Sane & Aguero to say Son and Auba by the 27 deadline.

Didn't realize that. Guess that helped with your decision to bring him in this week? Good job.

In that case maybe wait till next week, although Auba will only have 2 good games left before a trio of difficult ones.

Besides doing Sane to Son I mean. The hit is only worth around -2 and I'd take a hit like that to replace Rich and/or Digne anytime.

That's what I'd have gone for in your case. Already have Son, Auba and Pereira and Rich > Anderson on the cards for 27.

Ignore the -2 part, totally forgot Schindler could easily get 2 points in 27. He also has a game in 31 if you think you'll struggle for players on the second blank week.

Set to bench Alonso this week (mci) - feels strange, despite the fixture! First time.

He’ll be my next transfer out barring any injuries, to either TAA or Periera - done Haz Quaner to Son Rashford this week.

Below is my current squad. I feel Danilo, Sterling/Sane, Rashford (after Fulham) might need to go in the next two GWs.
No Wolves has been hurting me a little in recent GWs but might stick without them now.

            Targets:
            A. Mane
            B. Auba/Laca
            C. Kola/Pereira/Jonny (Danilo replacement)

What would you prioritise and is there a key player that you think I should have (bar Salah)?
            Cheers

            Alisson
            Robertson / Trippier / Shaw / Danilo / AWB
            Sterling / Sane / Pogba / Eriksen / Son

The problem for me with Danilo is you will never want to use a tfr to get rid.
You can keep one of Sterling/Sane
Probably Sterling if you want Auba.

Cheers, yes, one of Sterling/Sane will stay and be benched in 27. I think I will sell Danilo as there are good options such as Kola short term, Pereira long term from 27 onwards.

Cheers. If Sterling is benched mid-week, I might keep him and get Laca instead of Auba. I have been impressed with Laca in recent games, cant see him being benched in the near future. Then again there is that bloody UEFA cup to contend with.

Laca for eye candy I agree.
Kola been playing left wing really and can't defend. Suarez favorite position is left sided attacker.
I think Kola was subbed for Suarez too against Citeh.

Which keeper would you downgrade Allison to for the next 4-5 gameweeks...teams without blanks? Other keeper is Speroni (so useless).
Defenders are Robbo, Doherty, AWB, Bednarak, Shaw.

What is the reasoning behind replacing Allison. Need funds, another Pool player or just sick of his lack of clean sheets lately?

I'd go Fabianski, good up until 33-34.

Had Pat/Fab rotation all season then went triple Pool just as all the CS stopped. Mainly ML concerns blocking rivals 100 pts in my rearview. Could use the money better right now I think.

Triple pool will still be useful, specially if you're gonna navigate through the blanks via FTs, but agree that money could be better spend elsewhere.

Hmm, had planned to do Richal to Brooks and Ings to Auba this week for a hit but seems Brooks is out for a bit. Which mid now for up to 5.2? Would be on the bench most weeks. Other strikers are Jimi and Firm btw.

Richa to Brooks would have given you 1.8 so can you now go Firmino to Auba with your spare cash?

Yes I have 4.2 ITB! Was considering the Firmino swap ... that means I'm stuck with sicknote Ings though and Firm vs Bournemouth at home is a decent haul opportunity so not sure about it either way. Also means I still need to deal with Richarl for up to 9 mil, Pogba is the only real option at that price (already have Son) and I'm in a ML with no united allowed. I'm tempted to stick to the original plan with Brooks if he is only going to miss one GW so that comes down to is it worth the hit for Auba to Ings, I reckon so with Hudders the opposition or am I daft?

I actually got Kun for Ings and sacrificed Haz to do it last week.

Salah fail hurt all those who decided against Citeh assets.
For those who just had Sane which was quite a logical move are unlucky to date.
For those who kept Hazard well done and he trolled me as usual.
A quarter of manager who picked Kun are the winners.
The big decision this week is going Kun to Auba.

I think it's a matter of thanking Kun for his contribution and welcoming Auba back in my case.

              1. Eze Really?

Hey guys, if TAA is fit, is he better pick than Robbo whose 1.6 more?

            Cheers

I would get TAA if fully fit for the extra cash

If he’s fit and getting consistent game time, I’d say so.

Frees up quite a lot of funds for a player who’ll get you similar attacking returns

yeah. nailed till Gomez is back.

You can bring Robbo back with a Wildcard.
